YAY FUN
Hi Folks. Let me begin by saying this microscope has been an extremely fun toy to have around the house. I'm a law student (read: not a scientist haha) and this thing has been great fun - for the other novices like me, this microscope magnifies both 20x and 40x, which may not sound like much, but wait until you get a fingernail or a bug under it - EWWWWW. Anyway, this thing is absolutely solid - nice heavy-duty construction, with great optics. For those of you who don't know, this is a "dissecting" microscope which means you don't need slides or any of that stuff - you can just stick anything under it and easily get it in focus. VERY cool, and highly recommended to anyone who is interested in exploring the world of the small and icky. I can't recommend this scope highly enough, ESPECIALLY if you are a novice like me who just wants to look at anything and everything just for fun.

Typical Meade
The 9460 microscope is very good, with outstanding optics, and the "micrometric" slide adjustment was an unexpected pleasure. I'm glad I made the purchase; however...this product suffers from a typical Meade problem (and I own a very expensive Meade telescope too). The documentation is exceedingly poor. The scope comes with a very small descriptive pamphlet written in Chinglish. To Meade's credit, they do mention oil immersion lenses, but there is little, or no, mention of the aperture mechanism (which can be closed and translated), or the depth of field effects of the large objective lenses, etc.

With little effort, they could vastly improve the value of their products and ease the learning curve with more, and sometimes more accurate, descriptive material.

Response to Chris Newman
Scope is very good and Solid. Chris Newman (previous review) had problems with the 100X objective because it is an "Oil Immersion" lens and he was attempting to focus at that High Magnification (1000X) without applying a drop of oil between the objective and the slide. (The 9460 and 9600 come with a little bottle of oil in the box.)

Here is a snippet from a site explaining why oil is needed for this reason.
Remember that the 10x, 40x are dry focus lenses but the 100X requires "immersion oil".

Oil Immersion: A microscopy technique to close the air gap between the tip of an objective and the top of the specimen with a drop of oil compounded with a refractive index to match that of the glass in the objective.  Once the objective contacts the oil droplet of matching refractivity, that portion of the optical system becomes a unit.  Immersion oil is the only suitable oil for that purpose in order to achieve very high magnifications, typically from 500x to 1,500x, and avoid damage to the objective. Because very high magnifications require a very oblique angle of entry for ray bundles, they will tend to reflect, refract, scatter and disperse, without forming a sharp image, unless a unifying medium is used.  Immersion oils are available in indices of refraction to match optics

Disappointed after reading other reviews
This microscope comes with a 1 page hand book and, if like me you have not used a microscope before, you would have thought Meade could provide more detailed instructions.

I had no trouble using the 10x (100 magnification) objective lens. It looked sharp and was easy to focus. The 40x lens (400 magnification) was also easy to focus but did not produce a sharp image across the viewing area of the prepared slides provided. This may be the way it should be but who knows when Meade provide little to no information. The 100x optic (1000 magnification) I am unable to focus on any of their prepared slides. In fact I finished up damaging one slide by lowering the optic directly onto the glass. For all I know I may have damaged the optic as well! And this was by just using the fine focus. I did call Meade after being unable to focus the 100x optic and they very kindly (and at no cost) replaced all 3 optics. My guess is the optices were fine and it is my error but without a meaning full handbook who knows.

Quality Insturment
Our family and many of our friends home school our children and wanted a good microscope to assist with our biology studies. We searched the web for a quality microscope that would help make the subject interesting and enjoyable. Even though we thought the Meade 9460 Microscope to be a little pricey for our school group, we went ahead and bought. We were not disappointed! You get what you pay for. The high quality glass optics are clear and crisp, even at high magnification. The fine focus feature is a must, allowing the kids to focus easily and quickly. The moveable calibrated slide feature makes exploring each slide easy and thorough. The light with diaphram gives the viewer more control observing objects with different contrasts. The only thing I would like to see added with this microscope are a few more blank slides and an instruction book about making your own slides, and maybe some tricks about viewing. Other than those minor objections, this microscope has surpassed our expectations and is well worth the money. The extra features make using this scope enjoyable and easy enough for our nine year old son to operate. Our children have seen many different types of life found growing in water from an old bucket to a nearby river! Every week, our kids look forward to learning about biology and how small living things can be. The Meade 9460 Microscope made all this possible.

Dramatic views of the microcosmic world
This instrument provides a great learning experience for those wishing to observe matter at the microscopic level. Becoming interested in pond water, because of Biology class, I wanted my very own microscope that could view, in my case, protozoa (small single-celled creatures in pond water) at a highly magnified level. After much research, I would recommend this 9460 model, or the 9600 model,the latter having a binocular eyepiece head. There is a great difference in price though, yet both models have the same features, and same high powered magnification, the greatest at 1250x. The 9460 model is a value, and gives a valuable learning or researching experience. Great specs.
This scope has nearly the identical specifications to the one I bought for medical school 20 years ago. The optics are just wonderful. What amuses me is the fact that this scope costs 1/4 of what we all paid back then! For the high school, college or med student (not for anatomy though), this should do the trick nicely. Junk.
The only thing this piece of junk will accomplish is to disappoint a child and discourage them from develping scientific interests. It's useless. Literally. It cannot be used as a microscope.

Either buy a better microscope, like the Meade sold by Amazon, or buy a quality hand-held magnifying glass.

Don't waste your money. Get a Meade.
I know that's blunt, but the images are completely unacceptable on this microscope. As a child, I had a microscope much like the TASCO I purchased. Now, as a working scientist/laboratory technician with considerable microscopy, I know why I was so unhappy with that microscope. For the same reasons I don't recommend this microscope, because it's difficult to focus and even when focused the images are poor. For an additional 30 dollars, your child could have a microscope that actually works, and might not merely gather dust after the New Year.

Suitable for kids but not adult starters
The kit is good enough, but the plastic material from bottom to top including the slides, that is something to note, it is lightweight as mentioned. I did not like the plastic toy in our tables. Anyway great kit for your kids. ... Read more

Blurry, slow, & unstable
Here is what you get: the scope (actually it is a digital video cam that is powered with a USB port) & a software.
If you are like me who bought this one, after viewing all the great pictures on the Olympus mic-d gallery website, then here is what you actually get.
1- NONE of those pictures can be taken with mic-d without extensive time wasted trying to get it in focus, plenty of time in Photoshop, and may be a couple of other imaging softwares.
2- This image is a low resolution (600 X 400 pix.)and of bad quality even for an e-mail.
3- The worst part is the software, sometimes you get half-picture clear, the other half is fuzzy or missing and no way to solve this issue unless you disconnect it from the USB port and start it again. VERY bad software and for those who do know how bad Olympus softwares are, try the ones that come with their digital cameras!!
4- The whole thing is not user friendly and takes plenty of time to focus and zoom in. By the way the +200x zoom is a digital zoom not optical, this is important to know.

In short, this first generation Mic-D is not worth the money you will spend on it, so please ignore it to save your self the trouble of returning it, & I guarantee that you will. Put your money in a decent digital SLR camera like Nikon or Canon Rebel, then buy a microscope camera adapter for it. Microscopes are cheap, less than $200 for a good one that you can fit with an adapter and your own digital camera.
If you can't wait and still interested, go to B&H photography website and you will get it for the same price as amazon. Good luck focusing. ... Read more

This is a microscope the way a paper tube is a telescope!

NOT A DESIGN ERROR
This is in response to the post that there was an error with the 100x on the microscope. It's not that it's an error, but when you do magnifications at that level you have to do what's called oil immersion with the slides. This enables the lense to get close without being scratched. The instruction manual should say that. I promise I'm not making this up. I'm a biochem major with plenty of experience:-)

Possible Design Error
While checking this microscope it worked great until I got to the
100X objective. It cannot be focused at 100X. The objective hits
the slide on the stage and needs more travel distance to focus.
I placed a piece of transparant tape, with pen writings on it,
and the objective hits the tape and goes a little farther before
it focuses. Obviously, this is unacceptable! I called the
manufactor and they were unable to give me an explanation.
I hope this is just a defective unit and not a design defect.
I am returning the microscope and exchanging it for another
one. If it works then I will give it the highest grade possible. ... Read more
