Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's DSC-P7 combines compact dimensions with a high-performance 3.2-megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom lens. If you're looking for a take-anywhere camera that's easy to use and produces crisp, detailed images, the P7 is worth a closer look.

Optics and Resolution
The DSC-P7's 3.2-megapixel sensor captures ample detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 11 by 14 inches. For a serious amateur photographer, 3 megapixels is a great resolution, providing enough detail to perform some cropping and still have crisp prints.

A 3x optical zoom lens (39-117mm equivalent) helps you to capture exactly the picture you want, and an additional 2x digital zoom (6x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance.

To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.5-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: If you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder; if you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.

More Features
The DSC-P7 is designed to be a simple point-and-shoot, so it doesn't have a huge assortment of manual settings. However, more advanced photographers will appreciate the manual focus mode, adjustable ISO, and white-balance settings, as well as the exposure compensation and the ability to shoot black-and-white, sepia, solarized, and negative images.

Other features include a three-area multipoint autofocus and a multiburst function that captures 16 320 x 240 frames with three selectable intervals for convenient motion analysis.

Power
The DSC-P7 uses a proprietary rechargeable InfoLithium battery (model NP-FC10), which can provide power for up to 90 minutes of continuous camera usage. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, we recommend purchasing a spare battery.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 15- or 30-second clips, but the DSC-P7 can keep shooting until you've filled the memory card. It features three MPEG movie modes: video mail (160 x 112), presentation (320 x 240), and HQX (320 x 240) with 16 fps full-screen playback.

The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, Sony's proprietary memory-card format. The included 16 MB stick holds approximately 16 images at the camera's default settings. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 16 images per outing, then you'll want a bigger card. A 128 MB stick is a great size for this camera, storing around 130 images.

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera--your computer should automatically recognize the camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. If you own a Sony desktop or laptop, your computer may also have a built-in Memory Stick reader, which makes transferring as easy as reading a floppy disk.

Size
At 4.5 by 2 by 1.44 inches and 7.5 ounces fully loaded, the DSC-P7 is a very compact and portable digital camera.

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DSC-P7 camera, one rechargeable NP-FC10 InfoLithium battery, AC-LS1 AC adapter/in-camera charger, video and USB cables, wrist strap, 16 MB Memory Stick, and software on CD.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a spare NP-FC10 InfoLithium battery, and a higher-capacity Memory Stick. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tiny Camera Produces Great Photos
I had a hard time deciding whether to get this Sony DSC-P7 or the Canon PowerShot S230 Digital Elph. I was looking for a small 3.2 MP camera. I know some friends who each own one of these two cameras. They were nice enough to each let me borrow their cameras so I was able to fully play with them for a few days before I decided which one to buy. Although the S230 does capture images a little bit sharper, the P7 captures color better. The P7 has 3X optical zoom compared to the S230's 2X. The P7 comes with an AC adapter, the S230 does not (the P7's battery is charged directly on the camera while you must remove the S230's battery to charge it on a seperate charger). I found that the S230 often produced red-eye and the P7 seldom did (and seldom does). Luckily, you can correct red-eye on your computer. Still, I would rather have a camera that produces photos that require the least editing as possible. I would rather spend my time taking pictures! I wanted a camera that would fit in my jean pockets and although the S230 is a little smaller, the P7 is nontheless a tiny camera.
The quality of the MPEG movie clips with sound is great. This feature, however would never replace my camcorder--but it is a nice feature to have when I do not want to lug around my Digital8 camcorder. I also like the fact that the length of video capture time is only limited to the size of your Memory Stick. If I am not mistaken, only with Sony cameras (and only with some Sony cameras) can you fill the memory up with only video footage. Also, with the P7's Memory Stick, I am able to view and save photos directly onto my Clie organizer.
The size of the included 16 mb Memory Stick is insufficient. I purchased a 128 mb stick and am able to fit over 80 photos set at the camera's highest resolution mode. The photo quality is great. The photo quality is not as good as some (and only a select few) of the much larger 3.2 mp cameras out there but for such a small-sized camera, the P7 is one mean machine. I also thought of getting the DSC-P9 instead (with identicle shell/dimensions and features). After reviewing several samples of the P9 that a friend of mine owned, I found that it was not worth spending an extra $100 dollars for the extra 0.7 mega-pixels. The P9 is listed as a 4 mp camera but is actually a 3.9 mp. The image quality is not much different. Overall, I highly recommend the Sony DSC-P7 to anyone looking for a small camera that is able to produce photos with stunning quality. The metal shell also looks very sleek and attractive. I am glad I chose the DSC-P7 as I am enjoying it some much. I do recommend purchasing a larger capacity Memory Stick (at least a 64 mb) and maybe an extra battery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best digital camera I've ever used
I have previously used a Nikon Coolpix and Canon Digital ELPH. The Sony is far and away the best camera out of the three. Extremely crisp images, also has a letterbox feature (so you can take pictures in widescreen format if you want, which looks pretty cool). I would've liked if the digital video was captured at a higher res, but I can't complain since this is the only camera out of the 3 I've used that allows unlimited video capture (the only limitation is the size of the media) and audio. Also has some cool image effects- you can add sepia tones or take negative exposures. The menu is easy to use. The camera is sturdy without being too heavy, my only issues are battery life (about 1.5 hrs on a full charge, which is pretty standard but I'd expect more for the price) and the size of the provided memory stick- 16mb is ok if you're only using the lowest resolution, but to take advantage of the camera's full capabilites, including the digital video w/ sound, go out and get a 128mb stick as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Versatile and Highly Effective
I've had this camera for over 1 year now and I am nothing but satisfied. When I decided that I wanted a digital camera it was important for me to get one that was small enough not to impede on my active lifestyle yet did not compromise on technical ability. Sony's DSC P7 is the perfect mix. I travel a lot internationally and so I just put it in my pants pocket and keep the charger in my luggage. You can snap about 300-400 pictures before the battery dies. The menu functions are very user friendly and allow you to highly customize the settings.

There is also no compromise on other aspects. The movie quality is not perfect but really good and the sound is excellent. Another thing that is annoying about most digital cameras is how long it takes for the picture to snap. With this one, it takes the picture as soon as you push the button. This is also true with the movies. I know on some digital cameras when you are done recording a movie you have to wait a while for it to "save" to the flash memory. Not with this one; Sony seems to have gotten the right idea in that, flash memory should work in a flash. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes in extremely low-light conditions when the flash is imperative, you have to wait about 6 seconds for the flash to build up. But just to reiterate, this doesn't happen in the light. The other cool thing is the memory stick. You can get 512MB sticks and you can even buy generic ones (from the same company that makes them for Sony) at half the price Sony charges. The picture quality is outstanding. The user can select a variety of qualities along with visual effects such as B&W, etc...

To recap: It responds quickly to user commands, picture quality is excellent, it's small & light, it's not that expensive, and the movies have excellent quality sound with very good video.

Bottom Line: I'm a tough customer but the Sony DSC7 gets 5-stars because it deserves it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great to use, but disappointing pictures
My old Kodak digital camera finally stopped working after being dropped too many times so I replaced it with this Sony after reading many reviews of comparable products.
This camera is great to use, the menu options are easy to change and the USB interface makes downloading pictures very fast.
However, the picture quality is most disappointing compared to my old Kodak. Color and contrast never look quite right, and at lower resolutions, the pictures look grainy - unlike the Kodak at the same resolution.
Selecting "Autobalance" in Microsoft Photo Editor nearly always makes a difference - both for indoor and outdoor pictures.
I will now be looking for a new Kodak model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our first digital camera
I got this camera for my wife as a Christmas present. I did alot of research and tried several brands and models before I decided to give her the Cybershot DSC P7. One of the strong selling points for this camera was the ease of use. The menu interface for the camera was easy and it made sense. It's ergonomics are excellent, it is lightweight, and compact. This camera is very forgiving and allows us to take almost flawless pictures regardless of the lighting situation we put it in. The delay between when you press the button and when the picture is taken is minor, but it might be an issue when you're trying to capture an action shot (I normally pre focus by focusing on the subject and holding down the shutter button halfway and it works). If you want a camera that captures action, you'd probably do better by sticking with the SLR cameras.

The LCD screen is crisp, but you'll need to use the view finder on a bright sunny day. The digital video is fair to below normal meaning you'd get better quality with a camcorder because the cybershot has a lower frames per second ratio, but it is nice to have the "movie" option in a camera. With a 128MB stick you can record up to 5 to 6 minutes of footage at the highest resoulution.

Other features are the multiburst mode (for your golf swing, etc.), night mode (use a tripod), white balance (snow or beach pictures), 10 second timer, multi and center focus, and a red eye reduction.

We have noticed that our picture taking has increased 300 percent since we've started using the cybershot. I would definitely recommend that you purchase the 128MB memory sticks. We can put about 80 to 90 pics on a 128MB stick depending on the resolution we choose. Also buy an extra battery.

This camera was designed for the average person, primarily the point and shoot crowd so it may lack some of the manual and advanced settings professionals prefer. Overall, it is a fun camera that is easy to use and I think that makes up for any advanced features it lacks.

***Update*** 10-21-2003
Still No problems with the camera. Now that we've used it for
almost a year, we kind of wish that there were some lens accessories to increase the optical zoom. It still takes wonderful family pictures which is what we bought it for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugged, Easy to Use, Good Price
At last, here is an all-purpose, easy-to-use camera that provides a variety of built-in accessories. The Olympus Stylus Zoom 115 QD camera is a great find at a reasonable cost. Best of all, the learning curve is short. After 30 years of using a 35-mm Pentax with six exchangeable lenses, and another 15 years of using one of the first one-step Minoltas, I began to look for a simple camera that was lightweight and not fussy.

I needed a camera that could take excellent quality, in-focus shots of my craft booth set up, because show juries demand them. The camera needed to be small, durable, tough, and take the same quality shots indoors and out, with natural lighting and under fluorescent and indoor stadium lighting. If the same camera could take some close ups of my jewelry so I could scan the shots and send them to clients to give them an idea of a design, so much the better. And I didn't have a lot of money to spare, either.

After some in-person and on-line research I decided on the Olympus Epic Zoom 115 QD. I read through the instruction book once. I made one mistake loading the film (if you don't load it right the first time, don't push "rewind" -the tail end of the film will be sucked into the roll). That was it. My first roll produced some good shots and some excellent shots, and the second roll had no throw-away shots. The variable focus provides a lot of flexibility. No red eyes on flash, not even on the cats. No complaints. For the price, snap this camera up.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Camera with a Great Telephoto Lens
The camera is compact, solid but light, and very easy to use. The images are very good to excellent. All the features seems to work just fine. The telephoto lens really brings images in. Its relative resistance to water-spray helps with boating photography. So far it has worked without a hitch. Though I own a digital camera, I believe that a film camera like this is still preferable for travel or for taking many pictures in a short time. All you have to do is plop a new film in and keep going, and then drop it off for development and you will end up with photos that will not fade out in a few years. I highly recommend this Olympus for an uncomplicated way of handling photography in an economical fashion and ending up with excellent results.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended
I loved the features on this camera when I first purchased it. However, on only the 2nd or 3rd roll of film, I noticed the pictures (particulary the zoom pictures) were fuzzy. Olympus diagnosed the problem as the lens being off center. Now only 2 years later, the lens cover has broken off and the motor is not working properly. I am now looking for a new camera, but definately not an Olympus.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very nice camera, BUT....
We have bought six Olympus's for our large family of grown children. They are easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and compact. But, they have a major flaw. On three of the six cameras we have bought, the lins cover has broken and this prevents the camera from operating. The authorized service places in Houston Texas say they can not get the parts to repair this product deficiency.

1-0 out of 5 stars Camera Broke on First Use
The lens cover broke on the first use!!! I will never buy an Olympus Product again! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Difficult to focus even when brand new. Jostle it too much and you'll have to start squinting even more when you use them. In all honesty, however, I didn't expect much from a $17 pair of binoculars.

1-0 out of 5 stars i couldn't believe it
so there is was in the bushes about to flush out the prettiest quail you ever did see. then FLASH, BANG, BOOM, POW...the binoculars caught on fire. now all my friends call me that old ebonics thing called hotboy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect the world
If you're looking for a pair that you don't want to lose sleep over losing or having your kid break, these are it.

Having 20/15 vision, I find it's not easy keeping focus, because I have to change both the focus and the diopter on one of the lenses to bring an image into clear focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bushnell 10x25 Powerview FRP
This is a nice binocular for the price. Its got a great field of view, great light gathering and a very clear lense system. Its lite enough to carry anywhere and comes with a belt carry case too. If you need a light portable binocular for most amateur uses, this is a great choice for less than $20.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I found focusing these binoculars difficult, to almost impossible. Once in focus, they would not stay in focus. The adjustment focus for individual eyes also would not stay focused properly and would jump out of focus for no identifiable reason. The clarity of the image was far worse than I have come to expect from Bushnell products. I returned them for a refund. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I have compared many binoculars before purchasing this pair and have no regrets what-so-ever. They are a great all-purpose binocular. The 7x magnification along with a larger 50mm aperture gives a very clear image, even indoors.
I regularly take them to hockey games and the wider field-of-view keeps the action in your sight.
The perma-focus keeps images sharp. Remember that they are set assuming you are looking through with at least almost 20/20 vision so you can not use them without corrective lenses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars simple so far
I just got this camera from Amazon. At first, I was nervous. The camera is very small and light -- it felt... cheap. I loaded up the software (Windows 98) without a problem. I was able to take pics the first day, upload them, edit them, and email them. The pictures were really quite good -- I wouldn't consider paying hundreds for more expensive cameras -- it's not worth it. The free 32 MB card (offer from Amazon which might have expired) lets me take about 35 pics at the best quality.
Cons: the LCD screen is really pretty small and the editing software is really basic. But it lets you email people right away and sends them at low resolution so your friends won't have to download gigantic files when they open your email.

I am mostly pleased so far. I did not want to spend big $ and I feel I definitely got my money's worth -- $... for the camera and the free 32 MB secure digital card. Also -- I was able to connect to my TV and view pics there without a problem.

Kodak EasyShare is definitely Easy. I don't have a Dock and won't buy one -- that's just unnecessary.

This is a very good First Camera to buy for those on a budget but want pics that look clean, crisp, and that are easy to take/edit/email.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic camera but a terrific value
This was my first digital camera, and I was happily snapping pictures 5 minutes out of the box. Menu system is very easy to use, though the controls to do so lack fine control, and you may wind up trying a couple times to select on option, but that's a very minor complaint! The images are fine for email, but as with other reviewers -- printing them out in any size is an exercise in frustration. They're simply not good printed, but for 2mg pixels how much can you ask for? I found the color to be extremely true to life, the flash *more* than adequate for casual pictures, and so far it has handled surprising extremes of lighting very well.

Cons? The camera sucks battery life like a starving vampire! CRV3 batteries are the only thing with any life at all, but at $10 a pop for those, you'll want to be very conscious about turning the camera off when not using it. Do NOT use AA - you'll go through 60 pounds of them inside a week, and camera performance suffers.

Do NOT buy the dock! It's outrageously expensive, and you can transfer pictures with the USB cable provided. The dock is a waste of mnoney.

I recommend this camera because it's the best value for the money spent for a name brand camera at the beginner level. However, if you take a lot of pictures, or want more control - ie filtering, zoom, movies etc -- then you should spend more and move up the pixel ladder to a 4mp. But be prepared to spend *several* hundred more to do so!

1-0 out of 5 stars If it weren't a gift I'd send it back...
Even with the little screen on the back of this camera you can't tell that a picture you've taken is blury. Not to mention it is particularly confusing having a switch on the side to determine whether its in focus for close ups or distance photos. The low megapixels make it impossible to enlarge anything you've cropped to any extent. Finally and probably the worst problem has to do with light. If you are unfortunate enough to have to use the flash, it only lights up the center of the picture often washing out the middle and leaving a circle of darkness around the edge. I was almost broken hearted when I realized there was nothing I could do about this. I imagine that for as much as the gift giver paid...it was probably still too much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time, money, and review space.
Unless you're a philanthropist or one of those people who just love pain, don't buy this product. My first use went OK; I was able to send the pictures to my computer with little problem. Finding them was an adventure, but with a little computer knowhow (not available with camera) I found them.

Everything since then has been a nightmare.

I can take pictures, but my computer refuses to recognize the camera through the USB cable. Frustrated after several attempts, I bought Kodak's overpriced camera dock. It doesn't even do the initial charging of the batteries! But that's for a review on the dock...

The pictures it did take (both the ones I was able to get to my computer and the ones forever stuck on the camera) were subpar at best. They were fuzzy, and any amount of light (daylight and lack of) won't help this. The included software only helps if you don't use it. Even the wretched Paint software included on every PC is more help to pictures than the Kodak software.

Please, please, spend your hard earned money elsewhere. This product isn't worth any price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this little camera
I bought our CX4200 back in March. We've taken hundreds of photos and are well pleased with it. It's easy to use and the software gave us no problem at all. But the most truly amazing thing about our camera is this - we live in Ohio and visited Dawes Arboretum (a magnificent place) and I accidentally dropped our camera. It hit the ground, rolled down an incline, went off the incline into the lake where it became totally submerged. I jumped in after it and it was dead as a doornail. We removed the Kodak memory card and the batteries, hoping to use them in a different camera. Today, four days after the dunking incident, I put the batteries and the card back in, turned it on and it's working again, just as good as new. The pictures transferred as well as they ever did, and all the camera's functions are working. This camera was under water - it had water inside it, water in the battery compartment, water in the dock connector, water in the viewfinder and fogging up the LCD. A camera repairman offered little hope for it but today, this little camera is alive and well and taking photos. Don't try this with your camera! Just know that Kodak make a quality product, despite what may be said to the contrary. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the 3rd party reader
It worked only some of the time, usually my PC wouldn't recognize the hardware. I sent it back, seller was very accomodating. Now I've ordered a genuine Sony reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great - once I found the driver software.
The Strastechnologies 3rd-party card is a bargain and worked flawlessly ONCE I figured out something that the product descriptions (even on the Sony brand) don't reveal. Specifically, if your PC is running Windows® XP (Home or Pro), ME, 2000, or 98SE operating systems, this card won't work without the installation of driver software that is not included in the package! It took me a lot of research to get the correcct software directly from Sony. To save you the trouble, here is the link: http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-bin/swu-install.pl?upd_id=1277&PASSVAL2=SMB and the driver file is MSFMTINST210.EXE. I would have given it 5 stars if this information had been enclosed. Go for the bargain!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product !!
This is a terrific product for laptop computer users on the go. I was carrying around an external 6-in-1 media reader, which took up a bit of space in my bag.

This PC Card adapter is slim and easily fits in a pocket. I inserted it into an available PC Card (also known as PCMCIA) slot in my XP laptop and it installed itself and read the files on my card immediately. (Although it recommended a reboot to work, I didn't need to.)

I was concerned it would only read Sony brand memory sticks, but it has no problem reading Lexar. File transfer speed is pretty quick also... the images came in faster than when I used my external media reader.

All in, another excellent Sony product. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate depending on your needs
This is an ideal device for small to medium data transfer requirements.

I popped it into my XP laptop and the card was recognized, a reboot, and it was done. Now I can pop out the PCMCIA card anytime and transfer it among my other systems.

I popped the PCMCIA card into an old Windows NT IBM laptop, and the device was recognized on reboot.

Now I can use my memory sticks pretty much anywhere I want.

The only complaint I have with the memory stick technology is that it is limited to 128 MB (currently nothing larger in size is available). Compact flash cards are running upwards of 512 MB while the memory stick lags behind.

If you are simply managing large media files, then memory sticks should suffice. However if you need anything in excess of 128 MB you may want to consider the Compact Flash memory cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use a Memory Stick like a Hundred Floppy Disks!
I wanted a rewriteable medium that 1) was as easy to use as a floppy disk and 2) could hold as much information (if not more) than a CD-RW (rewritable CD). I found my solution by using this Sony PC Card Adapter for Memory Sticks.

This adapter, which fits into my PC card bay (which most laptops have) allows me to insert -- and eject -- a Memory Stick as if it were a floppy disk. (Imagine having a Memory Stick reader built into your laptop, and you'll get the picture.)

The Memory Stick is also much more convenient (and quieter) than using a CD-RW (which needs a special drive). And since a Memory Stick can hold up to 128 MB of data, the usable capacity of the device is almost a hundred times that of a normal floppy (which only holds about 1.44 MB of info).

With Memory Sticks -- and the adapter -- I can now transfer data, music or digital image files among my PC's, or among my photo printers, PDA's and MP3's which use or accept the Memory Stick format.

The adapter is plug-and-play with all of my Windows XP laptops, so installation was a snap. I was also happy to discover that my laptop will ignore the PC Card adapter and Memory Stick during start-up, so I don't need to dis-install the adapter in order to boot up my computer (cool!).

Even though Memory Sticks are quite a bit more expensive than floppies, their reusability makes them economical. The computer reads them as just another drive or memory device, so saving or retrieving data is a piece-of-cake. Best of all, with their larger storage capacity, I'm not running out of space as quickly -- as I always did with floppies.

I love using Memory Sticks -- and this Sony PC Card adapter (for storing and transferring data). Best of all -- I hope never to have to use another floppy disk again! Hallelujah! ... Read more

119. Sony MVCCD400 CD Mavica 4MP Digital Camera w/3x Optical Zoom
by Sony

Asin: B000066HU9

Amazon.com Product Description

The unique feature of Sony's CD400 Mavica is a built-in mini-CD recorder, a clever solution that simultaneously provides affordable portable memory and long-term archival storage. The camera also features a 4-megapixel sensor, a 3x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens, a jumbo 2.5-inch display, and long-life rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Optics and Resolution
The CD400's 4-megapixel sensor captures a tremendous amount of detail, allowing sharp 11-by-14-inch prints with pixels to spare. If you're currently using a high-quality 35mm point-and-shoot, expect to see as much detail in your digital pictures as you currently see in your film photos.

A 3x Carl Zeiss optical zoom lens (34-102mm equivalent) helps you to capture exactly the picture you want, and an additional 2x digital zoom (6x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly. In low-light situations (a particular weakness for many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance.

To save space, there's no traditional optical viewfinder to look through. Instead, to compose your images or review shots you've already taken, the CD400 uses a 2.5-inch color display. The advantage to using the LCD to frame your shots is that the screen lets you see exactly the picture you'll capture. The disadvantage is that you can't turn off the screen and just use the optical viewfinder to extend battery life. Fortunately, the included rechargeable battery holds a relatively good charge.

More Features
The engineers at Sony have gone out of their way to make it as easy as possible to share your images online. For example, the e-mail mode stores a lower-resolution version of your picture on the disc in a separate folder from the full-size version. This compact file lacks the detail of the original, but has a small file size, making it ideal for e-mail attachments. In addition, a video e-mail mode captures highly compressed, less-detailed movie clips that are also small enough to easily e-mail. With the time, expertise, and the right software, owners of any digital camera can create these more compact files on their home computers, but Sony saves you this trouble.

More advanced photographers will appreciate manual focus, a 14-bit A/D processor that captures more gradations in color than most digital cameras, and an uncompressed TIFF mode for recording the highest-quality photos.

Power
The CD400 uses Sony's excellent InfoLithium battery system, which not only holds a respectable charge, but also displays on screen how many minutes of power remain. Both the battery and the charger are included. Because the battery is unique to specific Sony models and can be nearly impossible to find when on the road, we strongly recommend getting a spare if you're planning to take the camera on extended outings.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures video clips with sound at resolutions up to 320 x 240 pixels. Unlike most digital cameras, the length of each video is limited only by the amount of memory left on the CD. The limited resolution of these clips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
With a traditional digital camera, images are stored on memory cards, then transferred to your computer via a cable or card reader, and ultimately archived by recording on a CD-R or other high-capacity medium. Sony's CD Mavicas simplify this process by recording images directly to CD, using a 3-inch miniature CD recorder integrated into the back of the camera (hence the camera's rounded shape). These discs are substantially smaller than traditional 5-inch CDs, and only hold about one-fourth as much information (156 MB instead of 650 MB), but this is still enough space to store over 60 photos at the camera's highest-quality compressed mode. Each disc costs a couple of dollars. To transfer pictures to your computer, simply remove the disc from the camera and insert it into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Unlike images recorded on memory cards, pictures taken on a CD-R are permanently burned into the disc, instantly providing a digital "negative" for archiving your photos.

If you prefer to transfer your images in the traditional way, just use an erasable/re-recordable CD-RW disc and connect the camera to your computer with the included USB cable. After transferring the images, you can erase the CD-RW disc to ready it for another batch of photos.

Size
At 5.5 by 3.75 by 4 inches, and 23 ounces, you won't slip this one into your shirt pocket, but it's still one of the smallest disc-based cameras available. The CD400 fits nicely into most SLR camera carrying cases.

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the CD400 camera, NP-FM50 battery, AC-L10 cable for in-camera charging, six 3-inch CD-R discs, one 3-inch re-recordable CD-RW, shoulder strap, AV cable, USB cable, and software on CD.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, additional 3-inch CD-R or CD-RW discs, and a second battery (especially if you're taking the camera on extended trips). Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett

5-0 out of 5 stars Man what a camera!
I've used this camera over the past seven months and I become more impressed with it the more I use it. The expanse of capabilities and options with the camera allows for taking excellent pictures under nearly any conditions. The manual as well as the shutter and aperature priority imaging modes allow you complete control over the imaging process. I've taken pictures of everything including northern lights at 2 a.m., my cats in near complete darkness, portrait shots of subjects in dark rooms standing in front of bright windows, and they've all turned out wonderfully. For printing, I've used both my home printer, and a professional photo store, and prints up to 10x12 have turned out perfectly with no degredation at all.

Several recommendations if you buy this camera. Don't waste your money on Sony's cd-r disks. I've used verbatim, memorex and k-hypermedia cd-r with no problem. They're certainly much cheaper, and they all hold 185 MB while the Sony's only hold 156 MB. I would also suggest that you buy the Sony external flash for the camera. While the hot shoe will accept other brands of flash, I've been very impressed with the improvements to my pictures since buying the sony flash. I would also recommend buying a small (3-6") expandable tripod that will fit in any case. This allows you to set up longer exposure shots for dark environments, as well as for using the timer function on less than ideal surfaces.

If you're looking for huge storage (and archive) capabilities, excellent images, and complete control over your picture taking (minues the zoom limitations), then this is certainly the camera for you. Everyday I think it is worth the price I've paid, and with a new baby in the house, being able to take several hundred pictures in the first few days and email the "best-of" off to the grandparents is certainly a plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got mine 3 days ago!
It is simply a marvel of technology and represents good value for money considering that it comes complete with a superb long-lasting Lithium-ion battery pack, International 110-240V 50/60Hz charger as standard for when you're travelling (you still have to buy adaptors to fit the sockets in other countries), and 156MB+ storage capacity on the CD-R/ CD-RW for about [price]. The camera and its' extensive features are easy to use after only a few hours of ownership. Slip the 3"CD-R or CD-RW into most CD-ROM drives and immediately access your photos in Windows Explorer without the aggravation of cables and card readers. The only blemish is the meagre 3X optical zoom. For anybody in Europe where this camera sells for about [price] before adding 15 to 20% sales taxes to give an average retail price of about [price] , this camera is an especially great buy.

But the Sony is BIG! OK, it can't be any smaller than the 3" CDs it uses for storage. But somewhere in Sony's system of R&D, having established that they had a superb product concept, nobody then passed on the design to the Sony boffins who specialize in miniaturizing everything. The result is simply that you have a great camera but which is simply GIGANTIC compared to anything else out there!

I should have spent more and bought a Fuji Finepix S602 with a 1GB IBM microdrive. Anybody want to swap?

1-0 out of 5 stars Fragility, portability, durability
As an avid photographer, I wanted a digital camera that had the complicated lense features of a regular SLR without the complications of the various storage disks/cards/drives that plague most other digital cameras. This camera looked like the one. It burns to a mini cd, and therefore the orginal images are available immediately on disc without software or cords. It has mini video functions as well as other high tech possibilities.

Nice idea, but it failed. This camera is still relying on new burning technology, so the camera is still extremely fragile and definately not portable. I've had the camera 10 months and I've had to fix it three times. First the burning lense broke... any slight shake or bump will cause it to go off course, making the entire camera non-usable. As there is no harddrive within the camera, if you cannot burn to cd then you cannot take pictures. Then the photo lense got jammed (over the course of a month--so photos picked up a blur after a little while) and was unable to function, although I was still able to view pictures. After paying to REPLACE both parts (in excess of $150 each) the burning lense broke again after two months.

If you're planning to only take the camera out on special occasions, fine, but if you're planning on doing any sightseeing with it, putting it in a bag and taking it anywhere, it won't hold up.

5-0 out of 5 stars love this camera
This is the best digital camera I have ever used. I have even bought a spare camera (MVC-CD400 it is sitting quietly in its box) just incase I where to ever break it beyond repair ;)

Ya its that Sweet!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars what a great gift
This camera was a gift. I don't know much about digital cameras except that whenever I have used one, the pictures always seem very grainy. I never understood why people would use them over regular cameras, except for the online uses. Having said all that, I must now admit that I love this camera. The picture quality is excellent, and I love being able to see my pictures on the computer and choosing which ones I want on paper. My only complaint (minor) is the view screen. When you are outside, it is difficult to see what you are aiming for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a find
What a find! I have owned many cameras, but this model is fantastic! For a casual user, my families vacation, new baby, and leisure shots are remarkable (Note: I have only used fugi film, rather than other brands, and truly believe that the quality photos are due to the fact that cheap film is not being used). This product is well worth the money!! As for the other reviewer having problems with loading film, I have experienced this, however, if you result to the directions, you are only supposed to place the tip of the film in the loading department, my problem was that I placed to much film, and it wouldn't advance, I have not had a problem in 2 years.
