1-0 out of 5 stars Great on paper, poor performance
I wrote a review of these earlier, where I noted that the field of vision doesn't align. Well it does at infinity, but the near focus distance is entirely overated. I've seen 6 pairs of these so far, and all have the same problem and that is the field of view doesn't align. I sent them to Olympus repair and they say that they are within "spec." The focus knob has also broken free and had to be glued back to the pin. While the optics are exquisite, the alignment is ridiculously bad. I'd say move on to another pair. The Canon 8x32 wp or Nikon Monarch instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great deal, watch for quality problems
I've had two of these binoculars sent, and while I agree with the previous review that they have great lens and optics, I have had two pair shipped (not from Amazon) that have collimation problems. Whenever you buy a pair, always check for this as it can cause severe eye strain as your eyes compensate for this alignment problem. I am going to try to purchase a fourth pair to see if this is symptomatic of the model or where I purchased them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best deal among mid price binoculars.
When I tried shopping for a birding/nature viewing binocular with excellent quality with reasonable price, this one and also the Olympus EXWP I 8x42 are both the best deal I could find.

Briefly speaking, there are 5 factors I emphasize on binoculars: 1. power (7-10x); 2. aperture (40mm and above); 3. prism quality (Bak-4 with MULTI-coating, don't be fooled by those "fully coating" lower quality ones, only consider "phase corrected" and "multi coating"!); 4. waterproof/fogproof (most binoculars in this category use nitrogen filled hermetically sealed); 5. durability: with rubber armored and roof prism style.

You can find those perfectly fitting on some Zeiss and Leica binoculars, with price [price]. They are really better than this Olympus, but bet you don't want to spend such amount on a pair of binoculars. Then there were 3 great deal falling in my category: Pentax DCF WP 8x42, Minolta Activa WP 8x42, and this Olympus model. Compared to the other two models, this one is the latest introduced (early 2001) with the latest technology (with UV coating which the other two don't have). The lower price is due to the brand equity of Olympus, which is considered not such a high price brand than Pentax and Minolta in camera world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hope this sheds a little light on the product
I bought this item to go nature viewing and must say that it really is a great binocular for the price. The items viewed have a really nice 3-dimensional look to them and the diopter comes in handy even for someone with very bad vision like myself. The focus for this model (16 x 50 Wide Angle) is a flat tab between the barrels that makes it VERY convenient to use without having to look or stretch your fingers. It gives a very nice field of vision and has roll down eye cups, which is good just in case you want to wear your glasses or shades. The binoculars do shake a little b/c of the power of the magnification. And it can be a chore to hold for long periods of time b/c of its weight. It weighs about as much as one of Michener's hardback novels.

Here is where it can get interesting. The binoculars come with a pleather carrying case, a really cheap neck strap that looks like a plastic shoelace, and a cheap cleaning cloth that is way too abrasive to be used everyday. I suggest replacing both the neck strap and cleaning cloth as soon as you can. The soft, microfiber cloths they sell in eyeglass stores works great. Plus, pick up some of the eyeglass cleaner (spray directly onto cloth, not lens) as it really gets the lens clean and protects any coating on the glass.

Tripod use: highly recommended to get a steady picture. You can get a regular camera tripod for around 18 dollars. Yes, this binocular comes with a tripod adapter. No, it's not very easy to find. The instruction booklet is virtually useless, but I found out through the website that the adaptor is located behind the front cap between the barrels. Just screw the cap off and viola, there is your threaded coupler. You will still need to get a binocular adaptor to connect the binoculars to the tripod, but I've found that they aren't too expensive: around 7-16 dollars for the generic models. I gave this item 4 stars b/c of the poorly written instruction manual and cheap accessories. Hope some of this info helps. Can't wait to see the stars tonight!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy On Excellent Binoculars!
I believe this to be one of the best buys in binos. The optics are great:
1) Porro prisms provide for a more realistic viewing depth of field.
2) 50mm objective lens (superb light gathering capability).
3) Good focus adjustment.
4) Great 16x magnification (product of the light gathering ability)

The unit is very well constructed and has a rubber outer skin. It also comes with a decent carry case and accessories. Make sure you want 16x magnification, as it will require steady hands.

Lower magnification (10x, 12x) with a 50mm objective lens will provide a wider field of view. You may wish to take this into consideration depending on your type (preference) of viewing.

BTW- I also own a $2000.00 pair of 18 x 50 binos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great binoculars for observation
This binoculars are good. They give a great clarity. I first tried the Bushnell binoculars from one of my friends. It was 8x21, small Bushell binoculars. I was astonished by the good quality of the binoculars especially the optics. After this I decided to buy binoculars for my self to use them for terrestrial and night sky observation. During the terrestrial watching they do a great job, but in my opinion the more power is better. It's still cold outside to tell how they do at night. But once or twice I have tried watching at the stars, good clarity but the binoculars are kind of heavy to hold on to. The case for Bushell is great but the strap for the binoculars is garbage. Nonetheless I recommend buying this binoculars but I think the more power is better. Bushell is doing a great job in optics. By just looking at the binoculars one would think that they should be more powerfull because of their size. I should have bought myself a 12x50 or even 16x50 Bushell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible value
I researched binoculars on the Web after my grandaughter lost my previous Bushnells (7x35). I was prepared to spend several hundred dollars after a cheap pair of Tasco's failed to illuminate at a Simon & Garfunkel concert.

My research led me to believe a Pentax 8x50 waterproof model would be the best choice ($265). I stopped at a local sporting goods store and tried various models of Pentax, Minolta and Nikon binocs, and they were ok. They had a pair of these Bushnells and I was amazed at the quality. They were the brightest, had the best field of view, were easy to adjust, and I was able to easily use them with my eyeglasses.

I bought a pair. Why spend $100s when these do the job even better at $45? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for Water in the Sun Shots
My friends and I took a trip to the Oregon Coast last weekend or some boogie boarding and wouldn't you know it, half way there I realized I left my camera at home! We pulled into a mini mart and I picked up this great little single use camera.

This little Kodak camera worked out so much better than my digital would have anyway - seeing as I wouldn't have dared bring the digital INTO the water! The pictures came out crisp and full of color, it was fun to use and to take underwater pictures of friends, and to top it off it was super cheap! This is actually my first experience with a single use camera where the photos came out good (it's been a long time since I've used one and those pictures came out all grainy.)

Others mentioned the lack of flash as a downfall, but for daytime use it worked like a gem. I'd recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take some water shots in the sun. For that use, this a five star item!

3-0 out of 5 stars No flash no big deal?
My wife and I bought this camera at the last minute to take with us to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We went snorkeling in Molikini (who hasn't?) and I have to say 3 things about this camera that have been mentioned already but need to be taken into serious consideration.

1. Price - A $10 waterproof disposable camera is very reasonable. I think for the price this camera is everything it is suppossed to be. The charter we went on the snorkeling trip with was renting $400 cameras with all the bells and whistles for $20 and $10 per roll of film.

2. Flash - For a snorkeling trip, and staying close to the surface I have to say this camera didn't do too bad. The colors were a bit blueish but nothing that I can't live with. As far as my 25 foot dive down to a turtle to get a picture, I shouldn't have wasted the picture, it is dark and blurry without a flash.

3. Eye Piece - This is a big pain to use with goggles. I eventually stopped trying to aim and just started snapping pictures. I would have to say that to be able to take clear photos underwater this camera needs a bigger eye piece.

Overall I was satisfied with this camera but to tell you the truth I wish I would have rented the camera from the boat with the flash (if only for the picture of me and a giant turtle).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for under 10 bucks
I used 2 of these cameras on vacation in Aruba. I took one down to 85ft with no problems. There is no flash so you better have great visibility or there will be no pictures. The camera is bouyant so you also need to use the rubber band tether that comes with it. I did not put it in my BC pocket for fear that it would come out and rush to the surface. But it was fine on my wrist.

4-0 out of 5 stars No enough sunlight under 10m,,, no flash either :-(
This camera looks really good and promising. Although Kodak says it could down to 50ft, the camera itself has the phrase "max 35ft or 10m" written on it. But we reached 60ft and nothing happened to it. It didn't break or leak! It also is a little bit buoyant, which means it won't sink if dropped, instead it will ascend.

It has two disadvantages; the first is its lack to a flash. There isn't much sunlight under 35ft of sea water and so the photos turned out a little too dark and bluish. After color correction the photos turned so pale and spotted. The pictures taken above 20ft were awesome. The second disadvantage is that the camera's eye lens it too small for someone who is wearing a diving mask (goggle).

The camera doesn't lose its color to the eye even under 60ft since it is blue. And it has a place where a rope or a nylon tape can be tied to it so it can be attached to the diving jacket (BCD).

It is not perfect, but it's the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera - both underwater and above
I recently took this camera on vacation with me to the Cayman Islands. It was wonderful! My pictuers came back clearer than what I had expected them to. The only thing I would change is the shutter button. It is located in the front of the camera and is kind of hard to push. The button is a little okward. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great First Digital Camera
If your criteria is: Ease of use, good quality pictures and optical zoom for less ... then this is the camera for you. We bought it for a family vacation and used it everyday. Surpised the original batteries are still going strong even after 75+ pics (added 32MB card), many LCD reviews, and several uploads. (I bought the Kodak charger and 4 battery pack and still haven't used it) We are waiting for the end results from Ofoto so I hope I haven't jinxed myself, but all the pictures look great on screen. Speaking of uploads, the software is very easy to install (WIN2000) and use. No need to spend the money on the docking cradle because you still do it with a push of the button within the software. Best feature: video out for slide shows on TV. Feature not avail: movie mode, but that's what video cameras are for. Summary, very happy we didn't blow our budget on a more expensive camera for features and settings we would rarely use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera - Fun, Fun, Fun
I received this camera as a gift and I have not been dissapointed since. You can print large pictures (up to 15" x 22"), I didn't realize this at first but when I found out, I was very happy. I figure I could make wonderful posters someday. I usually print up to 8" x 10" with excellent results. With the right paper and injets the colors are so vibrant and beautiful and the picture quality is superb. It's very easy to use and I love the "EasyShare" software that comes with it. This camera allows you to view your photographs on your computer or on your televison. How cool is that? That's a great feature you'll want to use in case you go on a trip. That way, you can have fun, create your own slide show and share your photos with your friends and family. I also like the weight of the camera. It fits comfortably in your hands. So, if you want a fairly inexpensive digital camera with great results, this is the camera for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA
I bought this camera during 2002 Black Friday Sale. After one year of regular use (no more than 20 times of use), it stopped to power on. I tried different rechargable battery (including Kodak recommended) and even recharges, but still no good. It has one year warranty, but it stopped working right after one year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but slow shutter and poor batteries
This is a really tough little camera and is great for vacation pictures. I just throw it in my bag and go--I've even dropped it a few times with no loss of function. I have blown up many of my photos to 8x10 and they still look great--even with some of the images cropped.

However, there are some down sides. It sucks up batteries like they're going out of style. I had no luck with the lithium batteries that came with it and now use (ick) lots of disposables. Also, the shutter speed is slow. This problem can be lessened somewhat by holding down the button halfway while framing the shot, then pushing down all the way to take a picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars what more could you expect for $98?
I am writing this review mainly to counter some rather sour reviews about the Kodak CX4230, the Easyshare software, and the camera docking station.
First of all, the camera will take good quality images, and I would expect no less from a Kodak. Unless you are a making posters or shooting in the dark, you will not be disappointed. But then again, you shouldn't have bought a 2 mp, $98 camera if that's what you intended on doing. Anyway, I always use the "best" setting, and the files produced are like 780kb. There is good warmth of color and clarity in the pictures. It has a 3x optical zoom, which is fun to play with. The camera is very easy to use, the controls quite simple. I was taking pictures in just a few minutes. You will immediately notice the shutter lag, which can take a while to get used to, but it certainly isn't unacceptable compared to other similiar cameras.

The camera comes with a CRV3 battery, and you can take a lot of pictures with it. I would recommend using a CRV3 if you're going on a trip or as a back-up. The directions say that Kodak doesn't recommend the use of alkaline batteries, but in fact the camera won't work with alkaline batteries. It will work with Ni-Mh rechargeables which are a good way to go if you decide against the docking station. I haven't encountered any problems with the docking station or the kodak rechargeable battery pack, but i haven't had the dock for too long. The kodak batteries must be used with the dock charger and yes, they are uncharged when you get them. As with all rechargeables they will require a few cycles to accept a full charge. I have been pleased with the dock because it is just easier to set the camera in and go. For $49 you get the dock and a kodak battery set which goes for $9-$11, so it's not a bad deal. However, it is by no means a necessity.

The Kodak Easyshare software loaded effortlessly on our XP OS and I can't really see anything wrong with it. My daughter prefers to use Easyshare to edit photos rather than Picture It, but that's probably just because that's what she's used to using. Btw, the red eye edit feature works well on our images.

To sum up: the Easyshare software is easy enough for children to use, the docking station simplifies the task of hooking up and transferring images from the camera to the computer and recharges your batteries at the same time, and even I can take good pictures with this camera. So what more were you expecting for $98 ? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in 35mm point & shoot cameras!
Of course it is the ultimate, it is well made by Leica, in Germany. I found the camera to be solid and easy to use. Read the extensivly detailed manual (in three languages, including english) to discover the many features and flexibility of this work of art and design. My cloud and indoor pictures have turned out exceptionally sharp with an (almost) idiot-proof metering and auto/manual focusing system. Since I wear glasses, the adjustable diopter in the viewfinder has helped me a great deal. The on body flash is powerful, and an excellent computer integrated accessory flash is available (Leica SF 24 D). The camera's large LCD data screen makes reading your adjustments easy. I have taken a lot of pictures in my lifetime of 68 years, with a lot of different makes and types of cameras and films. All camera systems are the result of a lot of compromises, and this one is something to dream for. Even with the advent of of the digital cameras, This film camera is exceptional! It was worth every cent I paid for it and the flash. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Laughs just for taking it out of the box
Never in my life do I recall taking an item out of the box and receiving such a swell of laughter. Every time I bring this plasitc camera out, manually switch on the flash, manually advance the film and of course, forget to remove the lens cover (manually), my guests laugh enough that they don't have to say cheese. As of yet, I have never taken a picture that shows my subjects in their entirity. I havent even gotten used to what I have to do to get a picture that doesn't draw yet more laughter. I know that you can not be close to your subject if you even want to see their whole face.
I didn't expect this to be a digital quality, sharing the moments type of camera and it is a good thing. My guests and I do share the same feeling that it is a fun camera just preparing the camera for use. Quality -- NO * Fun -- OK * Amusing -- Yes

3-0 out of 5 stars Why?
My imagination must be broken and I have asked several people so theirs must be broken, too. Why would anyone want a camera that takes 9 images of exactly the same thing? If you want 9 prints, just have 9 prints made. If you have a digital camera, as I do, just print 9 copies on the same piece of photo paper. Please feel free to educate me as I am totally baffled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken
I opened the package to find a cheaply-made camera. All my disposable cameras look better than this. I can't comment on the picture quality because the camera would not advance the film - the advance wheel is stuck, and the button to free the wheel is stuck also. A piece of junk I'm returning it back to Amazon today.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN!!!
This camera has got to be the funnest thing I've ever owned! You get four photos per frame, so basically there are four 2"x3" images per 4"x6" photo. The photo quality is awesome - nice, crisp and full of color. Plus, this it is super easy to use and load.

It's fun to keep the photos intact and look at the variations per image, but I've started cutting the photos and using them in craft projects - collages, greeting cards, etc. And they are perfect wallet size! The possibilities are endless.

Buy one and enjoy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Cheerful
I agree with the other reviewer who said this was a cheap little plastic camera. It is, but the photos were great quality, crisp, clear images and vivid color; just as good as you'd get with a "regular" camera. Immediately, I started taking all kinds of artsy-fartsy pictures, wondering how they'd look once they were developed. My pictures came out almost looking like postcards. I got the best results taking close-up shots of things. I'd also reccomend taking pictures of neon signs. I did the Radio City marquee. Very cool.

I only give this product 4 stars, because I dropped it on the ground, and it half opened up. None of the film was compromised, and the AA battery they sent with the camera was dead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for price; room for improvement
The Minolta E223 is my first digital camera. I like it. A few caveats:

The delay between pictures is a long time--especially if you're using flash--between 5 and 10 seconds. It's difficult to take candid photos of toddlers with this much delay.

The construction is cheaper than I'd like. The battery door is a little plastic slide held in place by a plastic nub. The shield over the USB port is a bit of rubber that you peel back. It's not water resistant.

The autofocus seems weak. Much of the time it won't focus, even though the lighting is good and the object is clearly framed within the focus bars. The autofocus on my 10-year old 35 mm camera is much better.

Until you buy additional memory cards, it will store exactly 7 pictures at 1600 X 1200 resolution (adequate for quality 4X6 prints).

The LCD screen is bright and easy-to-read. Given the way it eats batteries, I wish there was an option to dim the screen, but there's not.

It uses the standard "push the button halfway to focus, all the way to shoot" technique. But I end up shooting by mistake when I'm trying to let it focus. I can't tell if the button is too sensitive or it just shoots when the autofocus doesn't work.

I'm a software engineer, and it took me several hours to configure it for Windows 98 Second Edition. (I had to force it to install the msd_.inf drivers from the CD that ships with the camera. I had to install a "USB Mass Storage Device," not the "Dimage Camera" that came up automatically when I plugged it in.) Configuring it for Windows 2000 was a piece of cake.

It ships with batteries and a note that says "Although alkaline batteries are supplied with this product, its performance will be limited. . . ." Expect them to last for half an hour. I bought NiMH batteries and a charger, as the docs recommend, for another $30, and these work much better.

I think the microphone and speaker are unnecessary. (They are there because you can record--get this--23 seconds of low-quality, slow-framerate video under bright conditions. What's the point?)

The optical viewport also seems unnecessary. It's just a pane of glass in the camera body--nothing else. It doesn't even have lines to indicate the edges of the image or the area that the autofocus triggers. You have to use the LCD anyway to see whether or not the autofocus is picking up your image.

All that said, it's an inexpensive digital camera that takes quality photos. It has a great feature that increases the brightness by holding the shutter open longer. I'm happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money
I wanted a basic starter digital camera and I also own a minolta 35mm, so I knew that it would probably be a good buy. It had all the features I needed. It takes good pictures, but of course not as good as my 35mm minolta. The only negative things about it is the startup speed and battery life, which was solved by getting NiMH rechargeable batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact but extremely fragile
I loved my starter digital camera, once I
figured out the battery situation. That is,
until someone accidentally dropped it.
Needless to say, one short trip (in a
very light carrying case) from waist high
to the kitchen floor, did this camera in
for life. If you buy it, handle it carefully.
Because it is soooo light, it's easy to fumble it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A technical powerhouse for its price range.........
Having never used a digital camera previously, I have to say using this camera has been nothing but easy and fun. The photos can be effortlessly transferred to your PC via usb port to JPEG format. The enclosed IMAGE EXPERT software is also very user friendly. While the camera's auto-focus does have some difficulty getting the shot in low (artificial) light settings, the overall results are quite good. For example the outdoor daylight shots without the use of flash are amazing. Also the 3x optical zoom lets you get up to three inches away from your subject for crisp, clear controlled exposures. (This is ideal for internet auctions). The flash gives you the option for red-eye reduction as well. Another really fun feature is having the ability to view your pics via sideshow on your TV set. (This can be used to video tape the pictures onto a VHS tape to mail to friends/ family members who do not have a computer). I strongly suggest picking up the Toshiba PDR-ACM1A AC Adapter (sold separately through Toshiba). This way you needn't worry about drained batteries when transferring images to PC, or while taking photos when at home.) Otherwise, you could just keep a stockpile of alkalines on hand, or pick up a rechargable set of batteries. A great first-time (Macintosh compatible) digital camera!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
This was my first digital camera and I spent my hard earned money on it. Picture quality indoors was very poor, outside was ok. Downloads were easy and fast. Battery life was a joke,it would never be consistant on how long they would last a day or two weeks..I used rechargable ones from the start and had two kinds it never made a difference.
Now after 6 mo the camera will not recognize the charged battery at all.I have tried every thing new batteries 3 kinds and still nothing . So basically I have a useless camera, tech support at Toshiba is worthless and no one will work on the camera around here..they tell me to throw it away and buy something other than Toshiba.Great! Well that finished me with ever buying a Toshiba product again and you can be sure I will tell EVERYONE I know, that they need to look elsewhere for a better company and product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba PDR 3300 digital camara
Even if it was for free It's not worth your time or money
Battery life is horendous that you will never have a pleasant day taking pictures with this camara. Plus it has some flaky problem that it does not always turn on even if it has battery life left.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst camera and company on the planet
My camera was DOA upon arrival. It never worked from the minute that I opened the factory sealed box.

Toshiba offered to fix it if I mailed it to their service center and waited 4-6 weeks for them to repair it. Yeah, right.

My other option was to buy an identical camera from them and if I mail in this piece of junk they will give me a "discount" on my next purchase. I shouldn't have to PAY MONEY to get a camera replaced that never worked and is supposedly under warranty.

The bottom line is that the product is a piece of junk that never worked. The fact that the repair department has a 4-6 week backlog proves that these cameras are junk.

I will never buy any Toshiba product again in my life. I am very dissapointed with this camera and the way Toshiba treats their customers after the sale is downright insulting. ... Read more
