5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the true essence of the boxing game and its pain
Jimmy Glenn, former owner and trainer of the Times Square Gym is one of the unsung heroes in the boxing game.He has trained the best and seen the toughest boxers ever to set foot in the ring. This book is a true homage to a holdout establishment that finally succumbed to the wrecking ball in the wake of NY's Disneyization. The pictures in this book capture the look, feel and smell of what it was like to enter the rarely travelled circle of the serious boxer looking to make it to the big time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It made a wonderful gift for my wife
A beautifully done book that brings out the personality in all the women.I don't know why this book wouldn't be available in places - there are no nudes, nothing even too racy.Just pregnant women and setting that reflecttheir self-images.

I bought this for my wife when she was 7 monthsalong and she loved it.A great way to give a boost to a pregnant womenwho's feeling not-so-great about herself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of old, ugly women in tacky outfits
If you're looking for a pictorial celebration of all that is wonderful in pregant women, this is NOT the book for you. The women are no spring chickens, the costumes are garish. Just a big no-no.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful books you can own...
I stumbled upon this book in New York a few years back and was immediately stunned by its beauty and quality. The Gilman Paper Company apparently started their collection well before the current photography craze and amassed one of the most outstanding collections that you can imagine. Most of these photos are from the very earliest days of the medium and many are in the sepia tone that I personally love. The quality of reproduction is so good that you can actually frame some of the photos! It's astounding...well worth obtaining for any art book collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Catalogue
I purchased this book in conjunction with The Metropolitan Museum exhibit of the same name. I spent hours in the exhibit, and I spent hours pouring over the lush, and beautifully reproduced images in this book. I've always been fascinated with the photographic process, and this book explores it down to the roots. I've walked away amazed that someone figured out how to look at something, and through a chemical process tranfer ones vision onto paper. (Not to mention concocting the chemical formula) A stunning book, well worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's plenty of time for chores before breakfast
Bob Ottum, the editor of this book asked over 100 Amish to record a single day in their lives (Monday, October 4, 1993) and sent out cameras so that the willing volunteers could take photos to enhance their written diaries. The result is very appealing.I enjoyed my day with the Amish, astounded by the amount of work they achieved, and charmed by the gentle humor with which they accomplished their daily chores.

The one-day diaries were recorded during the peak of the harvest and canning season, and Monday was also wash day in most of the Amish households. From Wyoming to New York, the wash went out onto clotheslines, cows were milked and fed while Orion and the Moon were still bright in the sky, one family--with plenty of help from friends and relatives--was preparing for 500 wedding guests, and of course, children all over the country were bundled off to one-room school-houses on foot, by buggy or school bus.

One Amish lady who runs a bulk grocery store in Minnesota sold flour, yeast, oatmeal and a 60-pound pail of corn syrup to another woman who was having "church next Sunday and needs to do a lot of baking."This book lovingly details the breakfasts, dinners, and suppers eaten by the diarists on October 4, 1993 and by the end of the book I was extremely hungry. One family had 60 guests for a supper that included "scalloped potatoes with ham, dressing, ham and cheese sandwiches, vegetable pizza, Jell-O apple salad, cream cheese pudding, cherry and raspberry pie and ice cream."Plain food you might say, but abundant and home-cooked.

Of all the books I've read about the Amish, 'A Day in the Life' is the most interesting and enjoyable. It is the only book, the editor is proud to announce, with a map that shows locations in America where the Amish have formed communities. The largest concentrations of Amish are found in the Great Lakes states, but there are also settlements in the far northwestern corner of Montana, and the southern plains of Texas. In all, 22 states and one Canadian province are home to these industrious, plain-dealing folks.

    Book Description

Essay by Susan Ehrens. Introduction by Deborah Klochko.

In the early 1930s, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Willard Van Dyke, Imogen Cunningham, and other important photographers came together to form a group known as f.64, creating the most influential photographic movement of the time. Dedicated to the functional aesthetic of the camera, the group was in response to the "artistic," soft-focus, pictorial photography which was popular at the time. "Straight" photography was the hallmark of Group f.64. Emphasizing sharp images, maximum depth-of-field, and smooth, glossy printing paper, their works were underscored by the unique qualities of the photographic process. This book collects over 150 duotone images highlighting Group f.64's accomplishments, a body of work which signaled the true beginning of the modernist movement that would define American photography for the next forty years. In addition to Susan Ehrens' detailed essay, Defining Modernism also includes a chronology, bibliography, and biographies of the eleven featured photographers.

"The Group is creating a place for photographic freedom." Sigismund Blumann, 1933

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for photographers
You look at his life without knowing him, and you'd say he led a charmed, privileged life. Not so. He struggled like the rest of us, but did not let himself become callous, embittered, resentful, and all the other unproductive attitudes that people use as a crutch. He always dwelt on the positive aspects of life. I liked his social conscience. He photographed and wrote about Manzanar, and the plight of native Americans of Japanese ancestry. His Manzanar writings, for me, is one of the highlights in his autobiography. His many acquaintances and friends are fondly and personally recounted in ways that I've experienced from no other author. All throughout, you get a strong impression that he was a very scientifically-minded person who also excelled as an artist, and that's very rare even today. He poured himself out into this book.
