4-0 out of 5 stars Great for some things, mediocre for others ...
As a user of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements 2.0, Paint Shop Pro, Photo Impact Pro, etc ... ( I have just about all of them), I decided to purchase Digital Image Pro 9 after using a simple version of Microsoft Picture it! that came bundled with a new computer I bought and got very good printing results. This program is very user friendly and while it doesn't have the advanced features of Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro such as layers and such, it has some features that are worth the price of the program alone.

PROS:
*** The "Smart Erase" tool is fantastic!! It saves a lot of time from using the clone tool and it's amazing how it will erase an object from the picture and fill it in with the surrounding background. I even erased a small tear that was halfway into a doorway and half on the door frame and after circling the tear, it magically removed the tear and reconstructed the half on the doorway, and the half on the door frame seamlessly in one click!
*** Cropping is a breeze! There are presets for sizes (4x6, 5x7, etc..) or you can custom crop. The whole process takes all of about 10 seconds.
*** The printing of photos is very easy and the colors come out very close to the originals without having to calibrate your monitor like they suggest in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. There's absolutely no learning curve in printing from Digital Image Pro 9. Just preview and print!
*** Other very good tools are the "Straighten Photo" tool which couldn't be simpler! You simply click one end of the edge of the photo and stretch the line to the other corner and hit "enter" and bang! Photo straightened! Also, the fix redeye, remove dust, remove scratches, and remove wrinkles tools work better than any of the other programs I use.

CONS:
*** The clone tool is "horrible"! Unlike the Adobe products, there's no way to "unalign" the clone point when you first start brushing. Which means, If you click a point a half inch to the left of where you want to "clone", that point follows you around wherever you're painting which makes it very diffucult to work with intricate patterns or areas with a lot of specks or dust. With Photoshop or Elements, you can set a point and just keep cloning from that point, which is usually a clean area with no dust or specks, without having it follow you around to points that you haven't cleaned up yet.
*** It won't handle very large files. On a few occasions, I scanned pictures at very high resolution (2400 dpi) and saved them in TIFF format. When I went to open one of those files in this program, it wouldn't open it with a message that read " not enough memory" to open the file. The files did however, open up with no problem in Photoshop Elements.
*** A few of the other tools aren't very good. The "remove spots or blemishes" tool just puts a big blurry "dot" in place of the spot or blemish that you're trying to remove, with a color that is similar but not always the same as the surrounding color. They should've just left this tool out because you can get much better results with the clone brush or the smart erase tool. The "blending" tool is just mediocre as is the "adjust lighting" tool.

Overall, this is now the program I use the most for my basic photo editing needs and printing photos that don't need a lot of work or special effects. It's very quick, intuitive, user friendly, and has everything the average user needs to edit and print great looking photos. If you're a collector of photo editing programs like it am, this is definitely one that is a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for the non-professional
I've got a great digital camera. I enjoy taking pictures of the friends and family. I've got photoshop 7 and I know how to use about 5% of it. I don't have the time to take the class to learn the software. I picked up Digial Pro 9 on a whim and as it turns out, I LOVE IT. It's easy to use and it does everything that matters to me. Now sure it might be nice to convert the picture over to a water color painting with the granite sandstone filter applied and blah blah blah... whatever. I just want my pictures to look better and to have a little more control to remove a few things that I don't want in them. With Digital Pro 9, it's easy and fast. I am sold. I use Pro 9 all the time now, my pictures look great and I'm VERY happy. Don't let people turn you off to this product. I'm not a pro microsoft advocate, but I've got to tell you, this is good software. You'll pick it up quickly and and do more in an hour than you did in 10 hours with photoshop 7 (unless your a professional in which case what are you doing looking at this review, it's for the normal people).

Good luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Versatile Program - But Too Many Crashes
Microsoft has enhanced Picture It Pro 9 with many uselful features - Batch Editing; Picture Straightening; Cut-Out tools; filters, etc. PI Pro 9 has enough tools to satisfy even the most demanding Prosumer. HOWEVER, the program is very unstable, especially if you do a lot of composites as I do. You can be assured that the program will crash at least once every session while working on "complex" compositions using multiple image files. Many complaints have been registered with MS Customer Service (check out some of the other feedbacks sites) but yet no patches or updates have been issued. If you want "professional" resutls go with PhotoShop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the average user that wants decent results now
I have been using Adobe Element 2.0 for nearly a year, and Digital Image Pro for only about 3 months, and I must say I can accomplish the same amount of work with Digital Image Pro in a fraction of the time compared to Elements. I actually enjoy using both programs for different tasks, but quite honestly, I find myself gravitating more and more to Digital Image Pro, as I wear "several hats" in my work and due to time pressures, I simply don't have the time to learn the full functionality of Elements, or its sometimes painstakingly unintuitive program design. In contrast, when I use Digital Image Pro, I feel I am "cutting right to the chase" and getting my task work done, without the need for wasting time constantly referring to a manual. This is not to say I plan to give up on Elements; but if you're a novice like myself, you will likely find Digital Image Pro to be more enjoyable and productive program to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Regular People
For those who aren't professional photo editors, let's be honest with each other: how many of us have bought the professional programs that professionals recommend, and then find that the learning curve is so difficult that we don't use them? I have several other photo editing programs: Photoshop Elements 2.0, Paint Shop Pro. I kept buying the next one because the "pros" recommended them. I found that to learn EACH task it took from 1/2 to 1 hour. There is NO simplicity to anything with those programs. They can do awesome things, I just don't have the time to figure out how to do EACH and EVERY ONE. Using MS Digital Image Pro, it is set up so simple, you can just make a few clicks and almost every task can be accomplished. I've imported many photos into the program, modified them easily and quickly, and then placed them into a video which I burned to DVD's for projects at work. I received quite a number of complements from other "non-professionals" on the quality of the changes. I was also able to easily make modifications for pictures of my family which came out very nice.

If you're looking for a professional, extremely extensive program, perhaps you might want to look at the other ones. But if you're like me and want a fun program that also will deal with 90% of common tasks, this will save you a lot of frustration. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Photo Center is an image editing and organizing program that manages to combine powerful functionality with excellent ease of use. Beginners will appreciate the Image Wizard, which walks you through the process of correcting imperfections in an original photograph, cropping it to a specific size for printing on photo paper, colorizing and sharpening it, and removing dust and scratches. The "variations" control is particularly useful here, displaying thumbnail images of how the different effects will alter the look of the photo before actually making any changes.

Although the wizard will suffice for many basic editing jobs, it won't be long before you start delving into the menus and toolbars to discover a wide and impressive range of pre-set effects that can be applied to your photographs. These include frames, artist effects (like chalk, pencil, and oils), masques to change the outline of a photo, various kinds of distortion, and some excellent lighting effects, especially the spotlight control. Elsewhere there's a range of tools for adding pre-drawn shapes like rectangles and circles, good freehand drawing tools, a text tool (which includes some super textures and 3-D effects), drop shadows (impressively easy) and a highly effective tool for removing red eye.

The program reads and writes all the popular graphics file formats, including JPG, GIF, TIFF, and BMP, and supports a wide range of printing styles (full-bleed single images, multiple photos on the same page). Finally, the included Photo Album program allows you to find and then organize your photos into albums that you can browse, print out or share electronically via a wizard that creates a simple Web site in a few mouse clicks. The world isn't short of photo editing software, but Photo Center is definitely worth considering for beginners and enthusiasts alike. --Rob Beattie ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Editing application good
Editing portion of application is good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Album functionality doesn't work properly
The product was pretty good for correcting pictures. However, the Album feature did not work properly. I tried it on two different computers to make sure that it wasn't a conflict of some sort. On one computer, the Album feature did not work at all. On the other the slide show function did not work. I had a feeling that I should have gone with an Adobe product to begin with, I was correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Graphic Program - Small Price
Photo Center
SOFTWARE

REVIEW: This is a great program for anyone looking for a graphics program. In looking at the screen when the program first loads, a user would believe the program has a very limited capacity. But WAIT! Just click on the drop-down menus and there are TONS of other tools available. Need help in figuring out what each is? Just click on the HELP and the explanations are given. The tools are similar to those in PhotoShop or Fireworks.

The software comes with a User's Guide of almost 100 pages of helpful information. One whole chapter is devoted to an explanation of the menus and where you can find what. Photo Center also allows you to set up an album for displaying your pictures on the web. One very nice feature is the pre-set masques. Color gradients are very easy to apply in Photo Center.

Do you use a digital camera? Photo Center uses TWAIN to transfer between camera and computer. Go ahead, take a few pictures and download them to the computer. Now play around with the features, such as, cropping (take out the neighbor's dog), color correction (that dress really was FIRE engine red), add some text and print. A few sheets of glossy paper are included so you can see the results right away.

If you can think of a problem a picture might have, Photo Center can help you get rid of it or add it as the need may be. And for a price of less than [$$], it is a really good buy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a product for beginners!
I bought this program after getting a digital camera and wanting to "play" with AND improve my images taken. I bought this program based on it's packaging. They make it sound great. However, upon getting it home, became frustrated very quickly. For someone with no experience, your totally on your own. I knew I would have to experiment and learn on my own, but there is no manual, the help menu's are, at best, minimal and offer no help, merely a description of what the icon does. Save your money and search, like I should have, for a program that is more user-friendly WITH a manual for learning!

3-0 out of 5 stars Room for improvement
I have tried other photo editing packages in this price range and like this about as well any. On the positive side, it is pretty easy to use and handles the basic tasks and then some. There is no manual to speak of, but the program is not too complicated. I like that it uses the jpeg format in native mode (unlike Adobe Photodeluxe which uses some oddball native format). I was amazed, though, that the window under which the program runs cannot be made full screen. It was like trading my 19" monitor for a 15". Another dissapointment was that it didn't allow viewing of all information text imbedded in the jpeg file. My Cannon Powershot S10 stores information about cammera settings in the jpeg. Canon Photo doesn't display this (although it leaves them intact for other programs that can). I would hope the next version fixes these problems. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible program!
This may be a sophificated program, but give me a break! I've spent 2 days trying to just enlarge a snap shot to an 8x10 size ( which I was able to do with my eyes closed with the Adobe photo shop home edition 3.0). But when I got a new printer and Windows XP, I couldn't use the old program. I hate this thing!! Shame on you for making it so user unfriendly. I'll try to get my money back,

1-0 out of 5 stars Can we say ... rip-off???!!!
This software bundle is ... easy to use??? HAH!!! Give me a break!!! Compared to my previous program, using Photoshop Elements 2.0 is EXTREMELY hard. And does Adobe say that it's nothing more than a dumbed down version of the hard to use & expensive Adobe Photoshop? Or that crucial features from that never made it into its cheaper brethren? Of course not!!! If you did, you'd never touch it with a 10 ft. poll!!! And what about how Photoshop Album 2.0 isn't compatible with all imaging formats? I found it REALLY odd that was the case. Especially since Photoshop Elements 2.0 is (Somebody was definitely asleep at the switch.)

The way I see it, you can either give me the best, or don't bother giving it to me at all. Don't take a great product like Adobe Photoshop, dumb it down, then offer it to me, because I'll never buy substandard products. In short, don't waste your money. Go for a program like Ulead PhotoImpact XL. It costs about $25 - $30 cheaper, and it does what it advertises. It's also something that was built, from the ground up, to give you the best value for your money. You just don't get that with this software bundle. What a rip-off!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too hard
This program is just too time consuming and difficult. Why spend hours and hours trying to do something. The help is not helpful, no support, poor documentation. Big disappointment

5-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements is Outstanding
This software is very well done -- exactly as software should be. The basic features that get you 75% of the way there are completely intuitive, really without using the manual. You can quickly adjust brightness levels of photos, crop, etc.

But behind these simple but powerful starter features are an incredible range of really powerful photo editing tools. I just created an photo party invitation with a picture of our 4 year old and used layers to make it look like the cover of a popular magazine. The help files for the more complex features (texturing, text additions, rotations, etc.) are very clear and easily searched.

This is a "killer app" for photo manipulation, at a great price. I highly recommend it for anyone with a digital camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both Album and Elements Good!
I disagree with the previous reviewer that said Photoshop Album included in the Photoshop Elements bundle was bad. I am a new digital camera user, and I have been very impressed by both packages in the bundle. Album uses "Tags" which you can attach to your pictures, making it possible to easily sort your pictures by topic, person, date, event, etc. For example, we recently went to the circus, and I imported my pictures to Photoshop Album, and assigned the tags. So, now I can sort out all of the circus pictures from my other pictures, or can sort by date, or by animals, or by family members who went to the circus. With this kind of power, you don't need to worry about where the files are in your directory! Photoshop Album will do some basic editing, and Elements will do advanced editing, and is very helpful in sizing your pictures for printing. I highly recommend both Photoshop Album and Elements. Well worth the money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great software
After searching forever for software that i could use to copy photos and videos so i could watch them on my dvd player i came across this excellent software. After a little trial and error i got it to work perfect""It plays videos and makes slideshows very well.I could not be happier.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sounds good on paper
I purchase this program hoping I can put together a photo slideshow as a farewell present for a coworker and also as a slideshow gift for my niece. I tried the trial version first. It has very easy menus and I was able to create my first slideshow in 20 minutes. It worked great in my home DVD. I decided to purchase the program the next day. After finalizing the DVD I decided to try out the slideshow at work. It didn't work in two DVD's at my work place. I tried at two other people DVD's, still nothing. I went back and I tried different setup menus. After wasting more than 25 CD's I decided to call the company. The technical support recommendation: purchase a similar DVD so my niece can play the slideshow!!!!! What a waste of time and money!! The program sounds good on paper, does not deliver. Don't waste your money! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Open up a virtual wallet and share your pictures with PhotoExplorer 7.0. This simple package lets users load pictures frompractically any source--digital cameras, video, the Internet, andmore--then organize them, do minor alterations or repairs, and publish themto the Web.

The colorful interface is deceptively simple; though the main optionsare easy enough to find and use, some neat tools are buried in the menubars. The main screen shows pictures and screen shots organized bydirectory, and permits very simple additions, deletions, andreorganization. Files can be renamed, rotated, and annotated, thenarranged in slide shows. Internet options are many and varied, fromsimple publication (using iMira.com or others) to the scanning of Websites for pictures and video clips.

One disadvantage of Photo Explorer 7.0 that will concern more than afew users is its memory requirements. Though Ulead Systems (themanufacturer) says only 32 MB RAM is required, most users will wanttwice as much at minimum, as the software uses more than 30 MB fornormal operation. This can lead to crashes if multiple programs arerunning, even on 128 MB machines. Still, users who aren't worried aboutRAM constraints will find the package a simple, powerful, and expedientway to collect and maintain digital media albums. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this software
I ordered the CD and tried installing this software on two different machines running Windows 2000. In both cases, the install process crashed and gave an undecipherable error message . I contacted the company and was e-mailed instructions on how to download the product. I downloaded it and was able to install it, but it crashes constantly. In sum, I would avoid this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!
I have been looking for some time for an easy way to save pictures on a CD to send to parents and friends who don't have XP, or don't know how to use XP's picture handling capability.

PhotoExplorer works simply and effectively. You can create a slide show (extra benefit:pick slides from various folders), and then export it to a disk as a web page. Even better, it provides capability to give slides titles (different than the file name), and display them on the web page if desired. You can even rearrange order, and program will rename files to keep new order intact. And finally, you can edit each with FrontPage if you have it.

Great program! I've used the trial verson only two days, and have ordered the (inexpensive) full version. Buy it now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Does Exactly What I Needed - Nice and Simple
I really love this product. It does exactly what I needed. I am not into advanced photo editing - but I did need some software to help organize my shots. Here's what I like about this application:

1. Easy to capture and organize files: I can quickly retreive photes from my camera's memory card. The software will ask me what directory to save in, and then it gives me the option to rename the files into something sensible (I don't know about you, but I find those code names that the camera assigns to files to be pretty annoying - this let's me get around that very simply and automatically).

2. It provides basic photo editing and retouching capabilities. Nothing advanced, but it handles 99.9% of what I need.

3. Web pages: I didn't expect to use this feature at all. I was just looking to organize files on my hard drive. The truth is, it is SOOO easy to create good looking web pages in about 3 minutes, that I couldn't resist. It actually almost happened by itself as I was playing around with the software. The "html" files created by the program took about 5 minutes to upload to Geocities (or whatever host you care to use).

4. Printing: It is now very easy to print in a variety of useful formats. I don't have to worry about the image file size. I just tell the software how I want the page to look. You can't go wrong if you tried.

All in all, this inexpensive program has totally made digital photography a much more fun and convenient thing. I recommend it highly. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Perfect Photo Printer is designed to give you maximum control over the quality and arrangement of photographs on the printed page. In this way, you can not only make sure your photos are sharp, bright, and cropped properly (using the included editor) but make sure that you're using the maximum paper space whether you want to print an individual photo or arrange multiple photographs on a single page.

The program helpfully starts with a wizard that walks you through choosing the appropriate paper size--there's a choice of over 30--and then importing your photos either from your PC's hard disk or directly from a digital camera, a scanner, or a previously created Photo Printer project. The photo editing controls are rudimentary compared with some other programs, but they're good enough to improve general snaps and include a setting for removing red eye from indoor portrait shots. There's also a multiple-undo feature so you can make changes to a photo, change your mind and step back through the process to the point where it all went wrong, then correct it.

Although printer manufacturers have become better at providing utility programs to help you print out multiple images effectively, this does the job too, and at a reasonable price. --Rob Beattie ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BOTHER!!!!
I am not one to write reviews, but this one is so bad I just have to! I have many programs for all sorts of photo editing and photo printing. Some are great and some need work. But this has got to be the worst program I ever spent my money on. The box image and cover program description make a consumer feel that you can print multiple pictures on one sheet of, as they quote "expensive photo paper" with great ease and little effort. There is no simple way to set up one sheet with multiple size photos let alone multiple images as they seem to advertise. There also isn't a tutorial book, just a two sided 8 X 10 sheet that tells you nothing. I had to go on line to even find out the following info on how to print "multiple" images.
What you have to do is set up ONE photo in their program, pick multiple prints, pick out what size you want, print that, set up the next photo, put that same sheet of "expensive photo paper" back into your printer making sure it is in the proper position and alignment, print that photo, and so on until you have filled up your "expensive photo paper" with the images in the various sizes that you want. On top of that I could not find a "print preview" to double check that where I wanted the photo was exactly where it was supposed to be. What if you did put something in the wrong place and you printed over the first, second, or whatever picture. Not only have you wasted another "expensive sheet of photo paper", you have also wasted expensive ink.
Please take this review as a warning. Even if the program was free.....it still wouldn't be worth it. Save your money, I wish I had!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Would NOT reccomend
This program does not do at all what it claims to do on the package. I have not been able to print pictures as I want to -multiple pictures on one page. It is not user friendly at all. I have a lot of experience with a variety of applications and I have not run into one like this yet.

PERFECT PHOTOPRINTER
SOFTWARE
PUBLISHER: Data Becker
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

SOFTWARE REVIEW: Perfect Photo Printer" comes with two perforated 5" x 7" sheets of glossy photo paper, one CD and a two-faced sheet of instructions. It was very easy to install and acquire the photos from a digital camera through the use of TWAIN. You are able to do contrast, brightness, gamma, blur and other photographic corrections to all the pictures.

When I went to print, I was unable to find how to print several pictures in a size smaller than an 8" x 10". I went to the help menu and located the following:

Printing
The preparation of the projects, the compilation of the images, and the image editing in the Editor finally lead to one thing: printing the prepared images on the desired photo paper. Depending on the paper manufacturer, type, and format, you can have one, two, four, ten, twelve or even 16 individual images on one sheet. There may even be more variations added through manually defining the paper format or through updating the formats online.

When clicking on individual images, an error message stating "The topic does not exist. Contact your vendor for an updated help file. (129). As this is new software, having to contact the vendor right off does not make this it completely up-to-date. Looking through the Help menu, trying to locate how to print several pictures on one page was very much like looking in the Yellow Page for something. You look under one thing but they have it listed as another and you were unable to figure out what that was. Templates, Built-Ins, and thumbnails were not found in either the index or find sections of help. In looking over the images on the box, there was a Print screen that showed a page format in 3" x 5" size. Reopening the program and going to that Print screen, you could click on what was called Paper Format. There you found a way to change the layout of the page and produce the wanted 4 pictures on a page. Page Layout was what was trying to be changed, not the TYPE of paper to print on. Therefore, this was not the place one expected to look to make this change.

When saving pictures, they are unable to be saved as anything but an .FPR format. Unfortunately, this format is not compatible with the other graphic programs and makes it impossible to ready them for web designing by using "Perfect Photo Printer". This program is for someone who just wants to print pictures for their family. It is not a program to be used in getting pictures ready for web use or for anyone with more than marginal knowledge of photos and digital cameras. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Think twice before getting this
This software is pretty good. Usually this works okay. It does have cool effects. The reason I gave it a three is sometimes it get messed up. Like if you have two buttons close together they overlap. Then if you hit one button it actually hits the other one. ... Read more
