Amazon.com Review Photoshop's new vector features provide even more control when compositingphotographic images. You can use the vector drawing tools simply to createpolygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clippingpaths--vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers. Editable layer effects such as drop shadow and glow were introduced in version 5.5; in version 6, they have been renamed layer styles. New options includesatin, stroke and color, gradient, and pattern overlay. The layer stylesdialogue box provides much more control--bevel and emboss has five styleoptions, as well as adjusters for technique, depth, direction, size, soften, angle, attitude, gloss, contour, highlight mode, opacity--and that's not all ofthem. As the name suggests, layer styles can easily be saved and applied toother layers. You can enter and edit text directly onto the layer and set style attributesfrom the new tool options bar. Photoshop 6 seems to have benefited from some ofInDesign's superb typographic tools, with character and paragraph palettesproviding precise control. Web imaging tools have been revamped, withlayer-based slicing now available from within Photoshop itself, and a major overhaulof ImageReady introducing weighted optimization, rollover styles, and tweenedanimation. If you want the best image editing software that money can buy, look no further. For users of 5.5, there never was a more compelling reason to upgrade. --KenMcMahon Reviews (27)
For the uninitiated: Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard image editing tool. There is nothing you will see in print or online that has not gone through the Photoshop process, with color correction, layer/collage composing, filter effecting, web image optimizing .... and now, TEXT. I thought Illustrator was going to be Adobe's ultimate breakthrough, with its new transparency support. Then I hear from an ad designer friend that she does ALL of her ad layout in Photoshop; she doesn't even touch Quark or Pagemaker. I can't even describe how exciting it was to be able to FINALLY just type right onto an image in this program, without the usual detour into palletland. A few cautionary notes, of course, as is the case with any upgrade. Though it is easy to learn, there are some small changes to get used to, ie: to rename a layer is now option/double-click - the old way just takes you to MODE mode. Also, when I first installed 6.0 I couldn't figure out why none of my tools were functioning. Twas a Mac system thing, as it turned out ..... had to go into Extensions Manager and make sure Contextual Menus was enabled (all those little things we never think about!). Also also, 6.0 is designed to function most optimally on the G4, particularly the multi processor models. Me, I'm stuck with one of the first beige G3s, though so far I haven't noticed significant retardation of function. Cautionary notes aside, Photoshop 6.0 is probably the most exciting software event, the most liberated version of the program yet, and I've barely scratched the surface. I put it to the test the other day, printed out some text at 8 points, and sure enough, on a postscript printer it is as clear as if it was done in Illustrator. And just for fun, they have thrown in goodies like the Liquefy function, a sort of mini version of "Goo", and if that weren't enough, the new Layer Styles (formerly "Layer Effects") have so many tweaks available to them they are practically programs in themselves. Congrats to the wizards at Adobe for taking an already outstanding creative powerhouse application to a whole new level. The only thing I'm wondering is, what will they call it once Photoshop really CAN do everything?
Improved Layer Styles, improved Gradients, improved cropping. I know there's much more, but I still am kind of a newbie, I can't remember them all. And the most dramatic and fabulous improvement - the TEXT function! Oh my gosh! No more annoying pop-up window to type text into! You just start typing on your image. Editing and changing fonts and sizes is so much easier now. Also, I like the taskbar thingie at the top of the screen. Very convenient, I don't know how I lived without it. ImageReady is also improved. I find myself using it more and more. Also, I want to warn everyone - make SURE you have your CD of Photoshop 4 or above on hand. During the installation process, Photoshop 6 will want you to put in a previous version of Photoshop in your CD drive, to confirm you are qualified for an upgrade. They seem to only accept versions 4 or above. If you don't have a CD of at least version 4 of Photoshop, you need to contact Adobe support, and they will help you "unlock" the Photoshop upgrade, so that you can install it on your computer. Obviously, you must be a registered owner of Photoshop (any previous version) to qualify for this upgrade. I read on Adobe's support site that sometimes it's better to drag the upgrade installation file from the PS 6 CD to your HD. Have your previous version of PS in your CD drive, ready and waiting. Then, start the PS 6 upgrade installation from the install file on your your HD. When you come to the part where PS 6 asks for a previous version of PS, it's right in your CD drive. (This way, you avoid the annoying and tricky "CD-swapping" right in the middle of the upgrade. Trust me on this one!) Anyway, MAKE SURE you have a CD of a previous version of Photoshop on hand. Just having the program installed on your HD isn't enough. Contact Adobe about getting a replacement if you lost your original CD to the previous version of PS. Even though I am still a beginner/intermediate Photoshop user, I am finding MUCH to be excited about with this upgrade. I can imagine that most serious pro Photoshop users are elated. There's certainly a lot to be excited about. I cannot recommend this upgrade enough.
I am not a progessional graphics designer, but using photoshop 6.0 makes me look like I am. Every graphic and photo that goes on my companies webpage was created or touched up in photoshop. The "Save for Webpage" option is great. I can see how many seconds my graphic or photo is going to take to download on someones home computer. I try to keep every graphic under 5 seconds on a 28.8 modem. Photoshop lets me do this quickly and easily! When I first opened up the program I didnt have a clue on how to do anything, but I got the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book, and now I can do almost anything.
What's new: Editable text effects - Not quite "text on a path," but a very welcome feature. After skewing the text with this feature, you are still able to alter font styles/sizes/colors with no problem. Dockable Palettes - a great feature, if you have a large enough monitor (17" w/high-resolution setting, 19" w/mid-res setting), in order to see the dock. Allows you to place heavily used palettes in the upper right hand section, without having to move them around. It has quite a few more feature, but those I've mentioned are my favorites. Coming from 5.0 to 5.5 was fairly unimpressive, but the jump to 6.0 has made it a worthwhile upgrade.

1. Ask for a Trial. This thing does not have a trial version. Note: Most of my other software like Roxio, iTunes, Windows Media Player can "see" and burn with my CDRW. This is the ONLY product i've used that can't. 2. Support Sucks! - Go to their website. They'll convince you to use their website to look for support even though it's useless. Again, to avoid getting stuck with something useless, don't buy unless they can give u a "trial version" like some of the "real" big companies like Jasc Photo album.

PROS: CONS: Needless to say, I got a bit frustrated, and hopefully without sounding like a know-it-all, frustration just doesn't happen to me very often when it comes to design programs. Don't get me wrong, I had those days back when I was learning to use design software, but using a consumer-based program such as this should have been simple for someone with my design background. I don't believe though, that it had to do with being easy or difficult, as much as it had to do with the limitations of the program in my circumstance. But for the newbie, I believe it would be considered a difficult program to use. MY ADVICE:

Illustrator... I simply love this product! It is easy to use and the results port perfectly into the rest of the suite. InDesign... It takes a little getting use to, but then, it is EXTREMELY easy to use. This one is finally very stable! It is actually fun mixing this with illustrator. The two work extremely well together and produce expectional results! Add a few Photoshop edited graphics to the mix and there is nothing to slow you down! Version Cue... Haven't used this very much. Nice addition though. GoLive... If you need an editor and you use Photoshop, This fits in really well. The one thing that puts this set above all the rest is the integration of PDF across the entire platform and the interoperability between the product. The down side is that they still need to work on a SINGLE interface. I like the way InDesign's interface works with the tool bars hugging the sides of the screens. I wish they would impliment that across all of the products. Still, in terms of pure functionality, it is really hard to beat this suite! ... Read more

I have only been getting into digital image editing in the past two years and this was the place I had picked to start from. I have a digital camera and scanner and use them both to get images to my computer and had hoped that this software would give me a great deal of choices in dealing with those images. Not so. For one, the cloning tool is incredibly difficult to use. It is not intuitive (nothing in this program is) and often you have a hard time understanding where you are cloning from. The menu buttons with this tool, as with others, are set so far out of the way that they are not easily found (bottom left corner whereas the tool options are in the top left- also that button is very much the same color as the background, making it difficult to spot). I do a great deal of air-brush type effects in my pictures and it took me 1.5 hours to brush out one thing in a picture with this software. In comparision I used a different program (PSP7) to do something similar in ten minutes. The rest of the options are equally as riddled with problems. Some of the filters and things that can be applied to the picture don't seem to work as well as other programs I have seen. The standard effects often come out buggy or misapplied. I have seen the Sepia filter skew an image a few times, for instance. The Dell imaging suite offers more choices and better results in that area. The warp tool is rigid and there is no chance of doing anything artistic or comical with it (no oversizing mouths like caricutures here). The overlay function is either a)non-existant or b)so hard to find that I just didn't see it. I was trying to meld two pictures together and could get no results with either trimming the photo to try and fit or making it transparent to set it over the other. It does capture images well though. It fixes red-eye nicely too. For those who do not need a high-powered tool, this is perhaps your best bet. For those who want something that will allow them freedom to do with their photos as they wish, I would suggest something more powerful. The up in price is worth it.
I've had several people comment that pictures that were edited with this program look better than photos that they had taken at professional studios. ... Read more
