Amazon.com Review

With each new release of Photoshop, Adobe manages both to satisfy theexpectations of existing users and to pull a few magic features out of its hat.Version 6 is no exception. Powerful vector editing and masking, improved layercontrols, layer styles, incredible typographic control, new Web publishingtools, and a cleaner, more accessible interface are already making version 5.5,itself a groundbreaker, look like ancient history.

Photoshop's new vector features provide even more control when compositingphotographic images. You can use the vector drawing tools simply to createpolygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clippingpaths--vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers.

Editable layer effects such as drop shadow and glow were introduced in version 5.5; in version 6, they have been renamed layer styles. New options includesatin, stroke and color, gradient, and pattern overlay. The layer stylesdialogue box provides much more control--bevel and emboss has five styleoptions, as well as adjusters for technique, depth, direction, size, soften, angle, attitude, gloss, contour, highlight mode, opacity--and that's not all ofthem. As the name suggests, layer styles can easily be saved and applied toother layers.

You can enter and edit text directly onto the layer and set style attributesfrom the new tool options bar. Photoshop 6 seems to have benefited from some ofInDesign's superb typographic tools, with character and paragraph palettesproviding precise control. Web imaging tools have been revamped, withlayer-based slicing now available from within Photoshop itself, and a major overhaulof ImageReady introducing weighted optimization, rollover styles, and tweenedanimation.

If you want the best image editing software that money can buy, look no further. For users of 5.5, there never was a more compelling reason to upgrade. --KenMcMahon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Nirvana
Adobe Photoshop is, I believe, about 3 upgrades away from replacing every publishing application available. I've been using the program since version 2.5, and you talk about keeping up with changes ....!

For the uninitiated: Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard image editing tool. There is nothing you will see in print or online that has not gone through the Photoshop process, with color correction, layer/collage composing, filter effecting, web image optimizing .... and now, TEXT. I thought Illustrator was going to be Adobe's ultimate breakthrough, with its new transparency support. Then I hear from an ad designer friend that she does ALL of her ad layout in Photoshop; she doesn't even touch Quark or Pagemaker. I can't even describe how exciting it was to be able to FINALLY just type right onto an image in this program, without the usual detour into palletland.

A few cautionary notes, of course, as is the case with any upgrade. Though it is easy to learn, there are some small changes to get used to, ie: to rename a layer is now option/double-click - the old way just takes you to MODE mode. Also, when I first installed 6.0 I couldn't figure out why none of my tools were functioning. Twas a Mac system thing, as it turned out ..... had to go into Extensions Manager and make sure Contextual Menus was enabled (all those little things we never think about!). Also also, 6.0 is designed to function most optimally on the G4, particularly the multi processor models. Me, I'm stuck with one of the first beige G3s, though so far I haven't noticed significant retardation of function.

Cautionary notes aside, Photoshop 6.0 is probably the most exciting software event, the most liberated version of the program yet, and I've barely scratched the surface. I put it to the test the other day, printed out some text at 8 points, and sure enough, on a postscript printer it is as clear as if it was done in Illustrator. And just for fun, they have thrown in goodies like the Liquefy function, a sort of mini version of "Goo", and if that weren't enough, the new Layer Styles (formerly "Layer Effects") have so many tweaks available to them they are practically programs in themselves.

Congrats to the wizards at Adobe for taking an already outstanding creative powerhouse application to a whole new level. The only thing I'm wondering is, what will they call it once Photoshop really CAN do everything?

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad I upgraded!
I am a relative "newbie" to Photoshop (about a year) and I put off upgrading. I guess I figured I hadn't gotten my "money's worth" out of Photoshp 5.5 yet. But, when I finally upgraded, I was so glad I did! I love this upgrade!

Improved Layer Styles, improved Gradients, improved cropping. I know there's much more, but I still am kind of a newbie, I can't remember them all. And the most dramatic and fabulous improvement - the TEXT function! Oh my gosh! No more annoying pop-up window to type text into! You just start typing on your image. Editing and changing fonts and sizes is so much easier now. Also, I like the taskbar thingie at the top of the screen. Very convenient, I don't know how I lived without it. ImageReady is also improved. I find myself using it more and more.

Also, I want to warn everyone - make SURE you have your CD of Photoshop 4 or above on hand. During the installation process, Photoshop 6 will want you to put in a previous version of Photoshop in your CD drive, to confirm you are qualified for an upgrade. They seem to only accept versions 4 or above. If you don't have a CD of at least version 4 of Photoshop, you need to contact Adobe support, and they will help you "unlock" the Photoshop upgrade, so that you can install it on your computer. Obviously, you must be a registered owner of Photoshop (any previous version) to qualify for this upgrade.

I read on Adobe's support site that sometimes it's better to drag the upgrade installation file from the PS 6 CD to your HD. Have your previous version of PS in your CD drive, ready and waiting. Then, start the PS 6 upgrade installation from the install file on your your HD. When you come to the part where PS 6 asks for a previous version of PS, it's right in your CD drive. (This way, you avoid the annoying and tricky "CD-swapping" right in the middle of the upgrade. Trust me on this one!) Anyway, MAKE SURE you have a CD of a previous version of Photoshop on hand. Just having the program installed on your HD isn't enough. Contact Adobe about getting a replacement if you lost your original CD to the previous version of PS.

Even though I am still a beginner/intermediate Photoshop user, I am finding MUCH to be excited about with this upgrade. I can imagine that most serious pro Photoshop users are elated. There's certainly a lot to be excited about. I cannot recommend this upgrade enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A web designers must have!
I have been using Photoshop 6.0 for about a year now and I cannot imagine using any other graphics design program. If you own a digital camera, or design webpages with graphics, you need this industry standard program.

I am not a progessional graphics designer, but using photoshop 6.0 makes me look like I am. Every graphic and photo that goes on my companies webpage was created or touched up in photoshop. The "Save for Webpage" option is great. I can see how many seconds my graphic or photo is going to take to download on someones home computer. I try to keep every graphic under 5 seconds on a 28.8 modem. Photoshop lets me do this quickly and easily!

When I first opened up the program I didnt have a clue on how to do anything, but I got the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book, and now I can do almost anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most powerful raster graphics program around...
Most of you reading this have heard of, or are using a version of Photoshop. That alone attests to its popularity. And you know the basics. The single most powerful raster graphics program around, made more powerful and flexible by the number of plug-ins available.

What's new:
"Vector shapes" - a little misleading in its meaning. Indeed they are vector shapes, but when saved, they are rasterized. Maybe future versions will integrate the fundamentals of Illustrator (or Freehand - both the best vector graphics programs available) a little better. But the shapes feature is quite useful for logos, and small icons.

Editable text effects - Not quite "text on a path," but a very welcome feature. After skewing the text with this feature, you are still able to alter font styles/sizes/colors with no problem.

Dockable Palettes - a great feature, if you have a large enough monitor (17" w/high-resolution setting, 19" w/mid-res setting), in order to see the dock. Allows you to place heavily used palettes in the upper right hand section, without having to move them around.

It has quite a few more feature, but those I've mentioned are my favorites. Coming from 5.0 to 5.5 was fairly unimpressive, but the jump to 6.0 has made it a worthwhile upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best image editing software that money can buy.
Powerful vector editing and masking, improved layer controls, layer styles, incredible typographic control, new Web publishing tools, and a cleaner, more accessible interface. Photoshop's new vector features provide even more control when dealing with photographic images something that is lacking in 5.5. You can also use the vector drawing tools simply to create polygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clipping paths using vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers. The editable layer effects such as drop shadow and glow that were introduced in version 5.5; have been renamed layer styles in version 6. 1-0 out of 5 stars No trial, does not work for my CDR
Oh my... I brought this product so I can do slideshows on a VCD with the "proper beat" of the background music but apparently it does not recognize my Dell CDRW drive.

1. Ask for a Trial. This thing does not have a trial version.
Now I'm stuck with a product that can't can't recognize my CDRW.

Note: Most of my other software like Roxio, iTunes, Windows Media Player can "see" and burn with my CDRW. This is the ONLY product i've used that can't.

2. Support Sucks! - Go to their website. They'll convince you to use their website to look for support even though it's useless.
They responded to me with a "generic" email instead of trying to help solve my problem. Still waiting for a simple question of "Do you support my CDRW" drive?". Try calling their support number (not even an 800 number) and they still try to push you in using their website.

Again, to avoid getting stuck with something useless, don't buy unless they can give u a "trial version" like some of the "real" big companies like Jasc Photo album.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
I researched various design software prior to purcahsing Punch AS3000 and thought I did a good job of doing so...I was wrong. I have been in construction related fields for over 20 years, and feel as though given some instruction, guidleines, etc I can learn almost anything! Purchasing this software proved me to be wrong. Upon making my purchase I learned that there were no "demos" available, this should be warning #1! I pursued it. I was told that I would have 90 day support via phone tech support, which I did, however, when I did call I was treated as though i was truly "bothering" the receiver of my call, and then treated as though they could not believe that I did not know how to do waht I was asking. The manual is basically useless as it does not walk the user through applications in any sort of logical format. The tech support is not helpful, the so called tutorials are also useless. I strongly reccomend that you do not waste your money on this program. My only wish is that I could provide an alternative solution at this time. Each task is cumbersome and most require "custom 3D sorkshop" design which if you have the patience and "creativity" to figure out how to use still do not accomplish the task.

3-0 out of 5 stars Determine Your Patience Level Before You Buy
EXPERIENCE:
I suppose knowing my experience may help to gauge my ability to use the program and help you to decide what you are capable of doing if you purchase this program. I have worked with computers for nearly 20 years. I am a professional graphic designer and web developer. So, I suppose my experience with software would be in the advanced category. However I have never used this program prior to my purchase, but have used other home design and 3D software in my past.

PROS:
Great 3-D walk-through. Fairly descent selection of colors, materials, indoor, and outdoor furniture and landscape design elements. Fun to use if you don't need any custom items that are not in their library. I liked the ability to design more then just the floor plan, such as lighting, deck, plumbing, etc.

CONS:
3D tools seemed to be difficult for the average user. My expectations were not set high, as this is supposed to be a consumer-based product, thus it should be fairly easy to use with direction from the manual. However it lost me! It was several days getting the hang of using it and I still couldn't get basic items designed properly. For example, I needed to create an L-shaped island with sink for the kitchen. It just was not an easy thing to do. Because they did not have such things in their library, I was forced to use the 3D tools (designing from scratch). When creating the object dimensions, it is not easy placing the shape in it's proper location, and it was difficult to get the elevations correct as well. Try putting one of their sinks in your own 3D designed countertop, it just doesn't work well at all! It was truly more work then it should have taken for such a common task. Same thing when applying materials such as wood choices to furniture (albeit furniture was not real important for me) it took much more work then what should be considered a basic task (too many pieces to color within one furniture element). The roof never got quite finished either. I could not get the walls to fit within the dimensions of the roof (or visa-versa) on a 2nd story. I tried so hard, but not being an architect or engineer, I would say that this task requires you to really know what you are doing. It was not discussed well in the manual either. So, was it me, or was it the software with the limitations, I really couldn't tell you.

Needless to say, I got a bit frustrated, and hopefully without sounding like a know-it-all, frustration just doesn't happen to me very often when it comes to design programs. Don't get me wrong, I had those days back when I was learning to use design software, but using a consumer-based program such as this should have been simple for someone with my design background. I don't believe though, that it had to do with being easy or difficult, as much as it had to do with the limitations of the program in my circumstance. But for the newbie, I believe it would be considered a difficult program to use.

MY ADVICE:
If you really need something that covers a lot of ground, but doesn't require a complex design, or complex elements, then this should be fine. However if you don't have the patience or time, and you want to add more custom features to your project, I believe this program is overpriced for your needs, as it will prove to be more work then you bargained for. In fact, although I'm sure they put a lot of money into developing this program, I think it is overpriced for the average consumer trying to design their new home or remodel.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY
I just recently purchased this software and was completely NOT satisfied! This is a very basic program that simply is overpriced. The box looks nice...and it appears that you just purchased something professional...but please believe when I say this is FAR from the truth. They claim to have all these so called wizards, that basically let you change the size of an existing object and a material from a very small list of materials and thats it! For instance I wanted to see how my kitchen would look...well I jumped into the cabinet wizard to find I had only two door styles to choose from...and much worse I could not add molding, millwork, or handles. Sure, if I want to spend hours creating these things in their cubersome and ackward 3D workshop, then I can add them. This is just ONE of many examples. I tried to email my concerns, but four days later I got a reply that they believed their product was highend software. I wanted my money back but they refused and said I should have spent more time researching their product...how is that for customer service? They went on to say this product does not need a guarantee or even a demo version for you to try out...even though they offer a 90 day money back guarantee with all their other products. Save your money or spend a little more and purchase Better Homes and Gardens Home Designer Pro 6...it is far superior in every aspect. AS3000 may claim to have all these features...but let me tell you they all are very basic and limited. This is NOT a professional program...it is a professional scam and waste of your hard earned money! DO NOT BUY! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New horizon
The CS series offers a great new horizon for Adobe products on OS X. As a designer at an extremely busy design agency, we have found the CS series to be a huge improvement. InDesign is proving to be the victor in the war with Quark. The massive diversity and ease of use of this program is paramount to cross media integration (print to web). These versions of Photoshop and Illustrator are simply the best. The usability of GoLive needs some tweaking, I much prefer Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004. But all in all, hats off to Adobe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need for both the Web and Print!
Photoshop... Not much needed to be said about it! Not much out there with as much to compare it to.

Illustrator... I simply love this product! It is easy to use and the results port perfectly into the rest of the suite.

InDesign... It takes a little getting use to, but then, it is EXTREMELY easy to use. This one is finally very stable! It is actually fun mixing this with illustrator. The two work extremely well together and produce expectional results! Add a few Photoshop edited graphics to the mix and there is nothing to slow you down!

Version Cue... Haven't used this very much. Nice addition though.

GoLive... If you need an editor and you use Photoshop, This fits in really well.

The one thing that puts this set above all the rest is the integration of PDF across the entire platform and the interoperability between the product.

The down side is that they still need to work on a SINGLE interface. I like the way InDesign's interface works with the tool bars hugging the sides of the screens. I wish they would impliment that across all of the products. Still, in terms of pure functionality, it is really hard to beat this suite! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I teach Graphic Communications and Printing Technology at the Center for Arts & Technology in Phoenixville, PA. I am currently working on a presentation for the International Graphic Arts Education Association and will be featuring your product in my presentation. As more and more teachers in my building see what I'm capable of doing with your tool, I have no doubt that they too will be ordering your product quickly just like I recently did. I'm also helping one of my students develop an introductory level class on CD and it's been a great learning experience for both of us. He is learning just how difficult it can be to create a learning module for a beginning student and I'm finding out just how much he knows about his computer which is quite a bit I'm happy to say. ScreenRecord is a great advancement for hands-on education like this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Theres better out there
I got this with high hopes and...well, I think I set my hopes too high. Maybe I expected too much.

I have only been getting into digital image editing in the past two years and this was the place I had picked to start from. I have a digital camera and scanner and use them both to get images to my computer and had hoped that this software would give me a great deal of choices in dealing with those images. Not so.

For one, the cloning tool is incredibly difficult to use. It is not intuitive (nothing in this program is) and often you have a hard time understanding where you are cloning from. The menu buttons with this tool, as with others, are set so far out of the way that they are not easily found (bottom left corner whereas the tool options are in the top left- also that button is very much the same color as the background, making it difficult to spot). I do a great deal of air-brush type effects in my pictures and it took me 1.5 hours to brush out one thing in a picture with this software. In comparision I used a different program (PSP7) to do something similar in ten minutes.

The rest of the options are equally as riddled with problems. Some of the filters and things that can be applied to the picture don't seem to work as well as other programs I have seen. The standard effects often come out buggy or misapplied. I have seen the Sepia filter skew an image a few times, for instance. The Dell imaging suite offers more choices and better results in that area. The warp tool is rigid and there is no chance of doing anything artistic or comical with it (no oversizing mouths like caricutures here).

The overlay function is either a)non-existant or b)so hard to find that I just didn't see it. I was trying to meld two pictures together and could get no results with either trimming the photo to try and fit or making it transparent to set it over the other.

It does capture images well though. It fixes red-eye nicely too.

For those who do not need a high-powered tool, this is perhaps your best bet. For those who want something that will allow them freedom to do with their photos as they wish, I would suggest something more powerful. The up in price is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great results for novice users
Photo Explosion is a very easy to use, yet powerful, photo editing program. I use this program more than any of my higher cost photo editing software. It's easy to change the intensity, tone and color saturation of your digital pictures as well as apply a wide variety of fades to the edges of your pictures.

I've had several people comment that pictures that were edited with this program look better than photos that they had taken at professional studios. ... Read more
