5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for photographers
You look at his life without knowing him, and you'd say he led a charmed, privileged life. Not so. He struggled like the rest of us, but did not let himself become callous, embittered, resentful, and all the other unproductive attitudes that people use as a crutch. He always dwelt on the positive aspects of life. I liked his social conscience. He photographed and wrote about Manzanar, and the plight of native Americans of Japanese ancestry. His Manzanar writings, for me, is one of the highlights in his autobiography. His many acquaintances and friends are fondly and personally recounted in ways that I've experienced from no other author. All throughout, you get a strong impression that he was a very scientifically-minded person who also excelled as an artist, and that's very rare even today. He poured himself out into this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful
These photos take my breath away. They've inspired me so much

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it so much in 1998, that I had to get it for 1999.
The calender was spiral bound and oversized. The pictures were absolutely beautiful. I had bought another calender for 1999, but it just doesnt have the same beauty as the Ansel Adams one did, so I had to search out theAnsel Adams one again and get it. It is a choice that I am glad that I made! ... Read more

Book Description

The Appalachian Trail Conference (ATC) is the federation of local outdoors clubs and private-citizen volunteers who brought to life in the 1920s and 1930s the dream of a footpath atop the Appalachian Mountains. As the third millennium begins, ATC is focusing on a third major goal: enhancing the level of services to all those who seek to enjoy that footpath. Meeting for an "Appalachian Trail conference" one Monday in March 76 years ago, two dozen dreamers formed an organization named after their meeting and started in motion what would become a model of public/private cooperative management of natural and recreational resources. Its first major goal: to put the Appalachian Trail in place, on the ground from Maine to Georgia. With that virtually accomplished a decade later, its leaders set a second major goal: protection for the Trail within a greenway of public lands. It took more than thirty years for Congress to create the national trails system, with the Appalachian National Scenic Trail as its flagship, another ten before full-bore public land acquisition began, and an additional twenty-plus before all 2,160 miles were within the estates of the federal or state governments, protected for posterity.

As the twentieth century came to a close and the Trail was relocated steadily to its permanent settings, they asked, "What's next?" The answer: to make better known to more people the depth of all the historical, cultural, scenic, and educational resources that comprise this remarkable national treasure-which they now own-and to more broadly share the legendary Appalachian Trail experience. Thus, the Conference hopes it will entice more citizens into the equally legendary corps of volunteers who manage it day by day.

The images in this calendar are tributes to the foresight of the dreaming-and-doing founders of the Trail who sought to preserve for Americans of the new century the best of the natural places of the ancient Appalachians. ... Read more

Book Description

By turn the subject of myth and superstition and the historical object of adulation and persecution, the owl is instantly distinguished by its disconcerting stare and haunting cry. As the winged mascot of darkness, the typically solitary owl is a mysterious and fearsome predator. Emerging from its daytime roost, it announces the fall of night with an otherworldly cry. Then, floating on silent wings, it swoops down to snatch unsuspecting prey, which it carries home for itself or to feed its hungry brood. In Owls 2001, the world's leading nature photographers capture these splendid birds in 12 remarkable and arresting images. ... Read more

If David Muench's photographs of U.S. parks and monuments fail to take your breath away, you may want to check your pulse. If they fail to inspire you to visit Canyonlands, Acadia, Big Bend, or the Great Smoky Mountains, you have something to answer for. Muench has inspired a whole generation of landscape photographers with his images, which border on the mystical; he in turn takes his inspiration from the "primal beauty" of these treasures, which are places of worship to him. Muench makes it evident in an afterword that he is not a verbal communicator; perhaps that is to our advantage, for it forces him to express himself with the camera. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars National Parks of America
"National Parks of America" is a wonderful collection of photographs from the National Parks in the United States. David Muench does a marvelous job capturing some of the the most beautiful places in the United States. His photographs include the Alaskan National Parks, the Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods in Redwood National Park, the giant sequoias in Sequoia National Park, the natural bridges in the national parks in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Isle Royale in Michigan, and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. There is a map of all of the places in the National Park System, and an essay by Stewart L. Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy and Johnson, and James R. Udall. I cannot recommend this book enough. You must see it to fully understand what an outstanding book it truly is. It made me want to visit these places as soon as possible!
