5-0 out of 5 stars Great inexpensive holdover until the DVDs mature
The PV-L424 is a pretty cool piece of gear. (With virtually no reviews)

We just got it yesterday for $419. It can be found a little cheaper, but check store reviews...

We almost bought the PCV-L552 for its big view finder and 27x optical zoom, but after a lot of digging on obscure web sites, we found that older camera suffers from a dew detector light that goes off too easily, shutting down the camera for hours. The PV-L424 just came out in 2004.

The 20x PV-L424 optical zoom is amazing. Things still look good at 40x digital, can read a UPC bar code from across the room. Things look tolerable at 120x, but ridiculous at 750k. There a single digit from the bar code fills the screen and is almost unreadable due to pixilation.

It's kind of slim, better looking than the photo.

Menus and controls seem intelligently laid out. What's used most seems to have a single button for it.

I like the way the LCD screen swivels around so that you could actually dictate into it and see yourself. It's smart enough to know to flip the image right side up when I do that.

I can't say anything yet for the durability.

We chose this VHS-C thing because I think all playback equipment for formats other than this and DVD will be difficult to find in 50 years. And the DVDs suffer from $10 disk costs (for 30 minutes) and the resolution won't match the MiniDVs until they change the image format to MPEG2. The PV-L424 seems like a great inexpensive holdover until the DVDs mature.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mislead & Disappointed
The camcorder does not have the built-in SD drive, nor the digital still photo capabilities that are listed as included features in the product description.

4-0 out of 5 stars No built-in sd memory card or picture in picture

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the $$$
This camera does a GREAT JOB for the price. It has all kinds of great features and effects. The only negative I can think of is that it makes a slight noise when zooming in and out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for first time video camera buyers.
This is the first video camera I've purchased, and I'm completely satisfied with it after several months of use. I've found it to be affordable (important initial consideration), lightweight(important if you're brave enough to let the kids record), simple to use(important if you let grandma borrow it to record the other grandkids), and the recordings to be top-notched. These basic features and an excellent brand-name should make any new purchaser feel confident with this camera as his/her initial choice. One caution, the camera's package includes everything you need but a blank VHS-C tape (something experience camera users are aware of, but novices are not, hence the 4 stars, not the 5).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price BUT...
We love this new camera because it is the same features we had in our old camera.. We wanted a new one that had the flip out screen and for the price it cant be beat... BUT we cant believe they took away the personal title generator where you could type your own title in instead of using the 7 or 8 presets they have... It was a must ~ now we will have to learn to do without.. Still a great buy for those not willing or ready to go to digital and still wanting the top features...

2-0 out of 5 stars "Last of the Mohicans "camcorder
I bought this camera thinking since it was VHS it would perform better in low light (as did my older 8mm)than a digital one. WRONG. It also will drain the battery in 15 minutes. Resolution is poor with VHS mode and svhs tapes cost too much. Noisy tape makes me weary. Don't waste your money on this old"last of the mohicans" format. Just get a digital camcorder and buy a light. My $299. digital Sharp blows it away. I can't hardly give it away. Want mine for $150?

5-0 out of 5 stars EXELLENT CAMCORDER WITH A LOW PRICE TAG.
At first the camera looked like it was just a odinary one until i tried it. Wow everything was just so great 700X digital zoom could almost take any distant shot with just a click of a button. This Camera is fully loaded with image stabilizes and inbuilt light the rotatable lcd was simply facinating and it was very clear to me that this camera could take evryshot very clearly especially the image stabilizer comes in handy when you are travelling in a RV or a Car toshoot the outside Nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I Wanted and More
When I decided to start shopping for a camcorder, not even fully intent on buying one yet, I ran across this particular one early on and, somewhat to my surprise, never found another one that offered as much as this one did. When I think of videorecorders and video cameras, I first think of Sony, but Sony didn't really offer a product with all of the features I found in this JVC camcorder. When I began my search, it didn't take long for me to decide that I wanted a VHS-C camcorder: I wanted to play my videos in a VCR, and I could not really afford a digital camcorder, anyway. Next, I decided I wanted a color LCD screen that was at least three inches. While zoom capability wasn't really that important to me, it also did play a factor in my decision-making process. Finally, if possible, I wanted something that could also serve as a digital camera.

This camcorder has all I wanted and more. In terms of recording modes, it offers S-VHS, S-VHS ET, and VHS. I'm not a photographic expert, but the S-VHS video playback of my tapes was much sharper and clearer than I expected; as far as I am concerned, digital video could not look much better than this and certainly offers no advantages for me to justify the extra expense. I should say that the camcorder is very light and comfortable in my hand no matter how much time I spend recording. As for the LCD screen, it is very nice. The colors, especially depending on the angle from which you are viewing it, often seem too bright, but the picture on the tape itself is perfect. One thing this model does not offer is a color viewfinder, but I don't plan on using the viewfinder much at all anyway. The black and white image on the viewfinder is very good, but using the viewfinder only serves to make you stumble around with your eyes pointed down. With the LCD screen, you can remain a part of the action as you record rather than come off as "some guy with a stupid camcorder" terrorizing your family and friends. The display rotates 270 degrees, as well, so you can record from almost any angle. One important feature of this camcorder is digital stabilization; it's hard to walk around and maintain a steady shot, and this features helps keep the jerky movements to a minimum. When it comes to zooming in, this camera really outdoes most of the competition, offering 400x . While anything at the maximum zoom is naturally going to be pretty grainy, the video quality is excellent until you get close to that maximum. Recording in darkness is also not a problem for this camcorder; besides having its own light source, it also comes with a "Night Alive" feature that increases light sensitivity and allows you to get color video in dark environments.

This is a dual camcorder, serving as a digital camera as well as a video recorder. Certainly, the quality of digital photos is not quite as good as true digital cameras offer, but they look really good to me. With 2 MB of flash memory, it can hold up to 30 digital images at one time. Other cameras offer a higher capacity for digital photos, but this is enough for me. The video capabilites come first in my mind, and the digital picture feature is just icing on the cake. The software that comes with this product is really good (at least for an amateur like myself), and I had no trouble hooking the cable up to my COM 2 port and downloading images.

There are a myriad of other features, many of which I am still just exploring. There are many combinations of screen fades/wipes and special effects. You can film your video as an old, black and white movie, really annoy your friends by stretching the width of the picture and making them look fat, add a strobe effect to jazz up the action, add a fog element for that touch of fantasy, or--my favorite--use video echo to make everything look ghostly and weird. There are more features than I can discuss here in this review.

Returning to simpler matters, I must say that the documentation that comes with this product is excellent. While it does take some time to figure out all of the many things the camcorder can do, there is no problem getting the thing up and recording almost right out of the box. On a final note, I must add that the sound quality is also very good. Since there is no way to use an external microphone with this product, I worried that I would have a hard time hearing people's conversations on tape. This is not a problem. Not only does it pick up the sounds you want to hear, it also picks up a lot of ambient sound as well. All in all, this JVC product offered me everything I really wanted in a camcorder, and I am more than happy with it. Now all I need is something interesting to record. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for a great price
This camera has everything you ever wanted on for this price. Built in Digital still camera with 640 x 480 resolution, 300x digital and 36x zoom, lots of efects, very easy to use.

Every camera has ups an downs, the ups on the PVL-750 are: A lot of stuff in it, VHS-C format (you can view your recordings in your VCR)Digital still camera (not a lot of pixels, but it's ok for a first digital cam)Big LCD panel (4") The kit includes everything except the tripod, case and tape converter. The downs on the PVL-750: Everything you want that it dosen't has. My camera is 1 year old, and it's worknig great, i take it everywere (beach, picnic, race track, birthdays, Xmas, etc.) i have taken more than 500 pictures and have made 3 albums. The pictures don't look like a 28 or 35mm camera but with a editing program like corel or photoshop you can make them look ok. I bougth this camera because i wanted to make home movies, take pictures of my 6 month old daugther, i really didn't needed a sofisticated camera or a 8mm or hi8 format, i just wanted something to have fun, of course, i wanted also quality and low price. With this cam you can view your movies on your vhs (if you have the converter) and still be recording your camera at the same time, with 8mm or hi8 you can't do it (not with the proper equipment) with the PVL-750 all you need is and extra tape and the converter, and your on you way. Remenber if you want a camera with a lot in it, but want a affordable price this is the one. Take my word on it.

Check all the other cameras out there first, i know you'll be buying the PVL-750. Good luck and take care you all.

P.S. ANDYBOY, if your camera was defective why didn't you return it, and why you bougth it if you knew all the features in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke 3 months after warranty was up!
I finally have a place to discuss my terrible dislike of this camcorder and service from Panasonic. We bought this camera 3 years ago and it never worked right from the start. One of the reasons we bought it was for the built in digital camera. Well my 2 year old son could draw a picture better than the quality it produces. The interface to my computer to upload the camera never worked right and Panasonic was never able to properly troubleshoot the issue. Well my warranty ran out about 3 months ago (had 3 year warranty) and wouldn't you know that it stopped working. Never dropped, hit or nothing and the day of my son's 2nd bday, I went to put tape in and the thing kept humming and spinning the tape but not recording. Not worth having fixed as I heard terrible things about Panasonic customer service, so I am going to buy a new one now!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK CAMERA BUT THERE ARE SOME BUGS
THIS CAMCORDER REPLACES MY SHOLDER HELD FULL SIZED VHS CAMERA OF 1989 VINTAGE. QUALITY OF VHS TAPED PRODUCT IS OK BUT NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS DIGITAL CAMCORDERS OTHERS IN MY FAMILY OWN. LOTS OF FEATURES, NICE, BUT NEED TO HAVE A GOOD MEMORY ON WHERE TO FIND ALL THE BUTTONS WHEN SHOOTING. STILL SHOTS ARE NOT REALLY WORTH KEEPING AND SHOULD NOT BE A FEATURE WHICH LEADS TO BUYING THIS CAMERA. NEWER VERSION OF THIS MODEL IS THE PV-L751 WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE SAME CAMERA IN ALL RESPECTS. PANASONIC HAS NOT RELEASED UPDATED DRIVERS FOR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM ME OR XP AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FORCAST A RELEASE DATE IF THEY ARE EVER GOING TO WRITE A NEW PROGRAM. MY CAMERA HAD A DEFECTIVE LCD VIEWER AND HAD TO BE SHIPPED BACK TO ELGIN IL. YOUR COST TO SHIP, THEY PAY RETURN POSTAGE. SERVICE WAS PRETTY GOOD, ABOUT 8 DAY TURN AROUND AND THE FIX WAS MADE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very verstile (combo video/still shot)
Actually this review was prompted by the need for software. I have used model 300 x digital PV-L750D AND IT IS GREAT. I HAVE USED IT FOR PHOTOS AND VIDO. HAVE HAD FRIENDS REALLY THINK IT IS GREAT. I HAVE SUGGESTED THAT THEY GET ONE. AS WELL WE HAVE HAD PANASONIC VCR THAT LASTED WELL OVER 18 YRS (I THINK THAT IS CORRECT) WE HAD PURCAHSED OTHERS ADTER YOUR VCR AND THEY QUIT WORKING WHILE THE PANASONIC KEPT ON WORKING. I USED THIS WAY TO COMMUNITE WITH YOU SINCE I REALLY NEEDED THE SOFTWARE FOR THE

PV-L750D SO I CAN DOWN LOAD THE SHOTS FROM VCR CAMERA TO COMPUTER.

COULD SOMEONE E MAIL ME TH SOFTWARE OR CONTACT ME. I NEED IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YO COULD E MAIL WOULD BE GREAT.

JUST A FUTHER NOTE WHAT I SAID ABOVE IS NOT JUST TO SOFTEN YOU UP TO GET THE SOFTWARE. I REALLY THINK YOUR VCR'S AND THE VHC-S ARE GREAT PRODUCTS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I wrote an earlier review of this camera and wanted to give an update on something.

I thought this was a great camera, but the only problem is the mini-VHS format only gives you 30 minutes of recording time.

I was in a Circuit City store several weeks ago, and I found you can now get 40 minute tapes. This isn't too bad, and I like the VHS-C format because you can just plop the tape into the adaptor and play it into your existing VCR. The 8mm and super 8 mm cameras require you either purchase an expensive 8 mm player or else cable the camera to your VCR. This is no big deal, except that I like to keep my camera in the trunk of my car in case I see something worth filming, and this way I don't have to carry it back and forth between the house and the car just to see the latest piece of footage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice for the price
I think this camcorder/camera is very nice!! I have used it to download pictures and they turn out great. I did have a little problem with it saying that it was not connected but after just trying a few more times it worked. I love it and especially for the price and the accessory kit. I am anxious to use it more!! You can find the memory cards at at good deal. I bought a 64mb one so that I will have lots of room. Lots of gadgets on the camcorder but will take time to figure them all out but I think a VERY good deal for the price!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars robert
I bought this camera with my money, and i have never been happier with anything else. The resolution is great, its got many effects, and the digital camera works great. One thing I love about the digital camera is that you can hook up the camera to the TV, turn on the digital camera, and play the pictures, creating a slide-show. I really like the way the camcorder part is easy to use; I was able to teach myself how to use it and I'm a first time user. So, it is a great first time use camera.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works good for the money I spent on it!!
This is probably one of the best electronics I have bought in a while, the only complaint I have on it is you need good light to take pictures or video tape anything, otherwise it comes out fuzzy and slightly blurry. It works great other than that. I already have transfered about 300 pictures onto my computer and have enhanced and printed them out. I would like to have something smaller to take pictures but I am happy w/ what I have until I get some extra $$$ to spend on a small digital camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars This camcorder is crap folks
First let me say that i didn't buy this camera from amazon.com but from wal-mart.After purchasing this camera it wasn't a week after using it and the focus would blur out after extensive use..So needless to say i returned the camera to the store and got a 2nd.Ahh just to learn that the cassette door wouldn't stay shut when i tape was in place. So i returned it and got a 3rd one to think it would be a charm right?..Not! After using it for a month or so the lens went out..Would record sound just fine but no video.:(..So this ol boy won't be buying another panasonic cam corder anytime soon. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're torn between getting a camcorder anda digital camera, look no further--the Panasonic PV-L759lets you have both in one full-featured package. Althoughnot lightweight, the Panasonic PV-L759 is relativelycompact. With its large 4-inch LCD screen, picture-in- picture still, and video mixing capability--plus extrassuch as motion- and audio-triggered recording--thePanasonic PV-L759 is a high-powered video tool.

The Panasonic PV-L759's most impressive feature is itsability to function as a digital camera. Unlike mostcamcorders with still-picture capability, the PanasonicPV-L759 doesn't take stills on the VHS-C tape; instead, ithas a separate CompactFlash card that can store up to 400digital images. You don't need a video adapter card totransfer the images to your PC; just hook the camcorder toyour computer with the supplied serial cable, and theincluded software will let you download captured images. You can even download images as you take them. ThePanasonic PV-L759 also lets you insert still images into avideo recording with picture-in-picture technology.

Inour tests, the Panasonic PV-L759's video recordingfeatures were more than adequate, including a largeselection of fade options, an auto light for dark situations, backlight compensation, manual shutter-speed selection, and a manual-focus option. The camcorder's color filtersare interesting, although we didn't use them in mostsituations. We were surprised to find that the PanasonicPV-L759 doesn't have the black-and-white, sepia, negative, and solarized effects most camcorders havethese days.

The powerful 300x digital zoom is usefulfor faraway events, although we experienced some loss ofdetail at high digital magnification. The digital electronicstabilization is also useful for sporting events, distantsubjects, and shaky situations.

The Panasonic PV- L759 has a unique security detector that triggers recordingat the first sign of motion or sound. (You choose whichone.) Although this might have good applications foractual security, we found it fun for normal socialrecording as well--for example, we left the camera in aroom and it started recording when people entered. Onefinal handy feature is a remote-control holder on theshoulder strap, which prevents you from losing thedevice.

Pros:

  • Built-in digital camera
  • Large LCD screen
  • Powerful 300x zoom
  • Motion and audio detection
  • VHS-C format for universal playback

Cons:

  • Not lightweight

5-0 out of 5 stars This is awesome
I have just bought this camcorder and it is great. I was looking to buy a digital camera, 640 by 480 resolution or lower. I decided to save my money and buy a camcorder instead. When i saw this camcorder, i could not turn it down and so i bought it. To my surprise it performed in both modes above par. I was also surprise with the amount of features it had, so much, i haven't figured some of them as yet(I bought it today). Anyway, i would recommend this product to anyone who wants a good camcorder for their money.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is terrific! The best purchase I have made for baby pics.
This is a great product. The digital still feature allows me to put pictures on e-mails and the videos are great! I would recommend it to anyone. The software is great too!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Does it all....or seems to!
Bought this camera and found it to be a great! I really loved the digital camera function. The camera doesn't take the best picutes in low light situations but I found it well lite situations it did great. Easy to download to the computer. The video functions were what I thought were exceptional. I have used a Sharp ViewCam many times and I think this Panasonic camera outdoes the Sharp hands down. I especially was impressed by the many extra features which I did not know were out in the market. Only disadvantage is that it is a heavier camera than I would have liked.

4-0 out of 5 stars Digital Stills R great 4 E-mail, Not Photo quality
This is a very good Camera I couldn't be happier, but if you think that this can replace a Digital camera your mistaken. I bought this as a camcorder and the digital still camera was a bonus to me, but I will still need to purchase a Digital camera to get photo quality still shots to display on my mantel. Like I stated if you want an exceptional VHS-C camcorder that has the option to attach a photo to an E-mail to help get your point across then you will be more than happy with this camera as I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely impressive and easy to use ...A great choice.
Having just purchased the L759 Palmcorder I've used it as a camcorder and a digital camera. In both modes it functions extremely well. The ability to use this camera as TWO different devices is FANTASTIC! It also saved me an additional $700 for a stand alone digital camera. Try it you'll LOVE it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for long
I purchased this model in March 2002 and in May 2003 - it just quit working! I thought the battery had run out - recharged it -nothing! Bought a new battery - still nothing. All it'll do now is make a click noise when you switch to camera or vcr. Cant even get my tape out of the damn thing now! Call Panasonic - what a joke! They wanted $149.00 for a diagnostic test and $102.00 service charge - I only paid about $300 for it new. I'll never buy another panasonic again - the service was terrible and they are not helpful AT ALL! Good luck if you buy one - get the extended warranty! They should sell them for $50.00 and just make them disposable!

3-0 out of 5 stars It worked great until it stopped working....
I baught this camera around october and it is now august, and for some odd reason a couple weeks ago, it broke. i have no idea why, i wasn't being rough with it or anything, i'm sure i didn't bang it.

for one, the loading part would'nt work but my dad somehow managed to shove the tape in (i have no clue how because he can't do it anymore) and when he did it wouldn't record, play, or anything else!

other than the fact that, its a nice camera.

2-0 out of 5 stars A good camcorder but........
I purchased one of these last year and although I can't complain about the quality of the picture, the service from Panasonic leaves a whole lot to be desired.

My camcorder was accidently bumped about 8 months after I purchased it which caused the deck assembly and loading assembly to become unworkable. Even though the fault was mine, Panasonic doesn't seem to want you to have their products repaired, they would rather you buy another one, as the repair technician stated to me. The parts cost more than the camcorder did new.

Needless to say I will never buy another Panasonic product again and neither will my friends and family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good little Camera [for little money]
Iv'e had this panasonic camcorder for awhile now and i'm satisfied with it.It's got all the basic's you come to expect from a cheap camera but it boast a couple of xtras that i enjoy such as the digital fades and backlight settings that work well. While i was dispointed to see that this model don't have the option to make titles it's really a small overall flaw.My one other con would have to be auto focus. It just doesn't seem to work as well while zooming in on an object as it should so i'm glad they give the option to manualy focus as well..Overall i would recomend this to somebody just lookin for a camcorder to record family events or just don't wanna spend a fortune on a camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Bang for Your Buck
When I first recieved this particular product I have to admit i was skeptical. I had only bought this product because I was in charge of taping some scenes from a play. But, after using this product I would say that it has the most features and the easiest to use system you will find for anywhere near [item price]! It easy to use, sleek, hideaway LCD screen lets you see exactly what you are taping. It also lets you watch what you taped without having to go to a TV. Overall, what this procuct has to offer is far superior to some of its competitors. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The versatile PVL552 VHS-C Camcorder has features that you wouldn't expect VHS camcorders to have. The PVL552 comes equipped with a 26:1 optical zoom. This powerful feature acts like a telescope to produce extraordinary close-up shots, superior in clarity to those provided by digital zoom. You can also choose between four zoom speeds, so you can go from a wide angle to full telephoto zoom in 2 to 16 seconds. It also has a 780x digital zoom which significantly increases the range of video capture when complemented with the optical zoom.

Saving battery power is essential for shooting, so during recording and playback, the PVL552 camcorder features a color viewfinder that can be used instead of the LCD.

To compensate for unintentional hand and camcorder movement when recording, the dual Digital Electronic Image Stabilization (D-EIS) feature aids in reducing those jitters. You can also use it in playback mode to help reduce jitter in previously recorded video. Playback can be done through a VCR or quick review can be accomplished using the 4 inch LCD screen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst camcorder I have ever bought.
I bought this camcorder less than a year ago and once again it is not working. This is the second time that something has broken on it. It is not worth the money, buy a Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars so cool
ok, this is one of the cheapest camcorders ive seen and it is great. i got it yesterday and i already know how to work it, its so easy and im 12 if you want an awesome, very good camcorder at a good price get this!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Camera is great
I recently purchased this camcorder. I was not that familiar with how to use a camcorder. I spent time learning how to use this camcorder by going over the manual page by page. I had no problems with the picture, viewing, recording or setting the features to my specification. I get a good picture on the the LCD, VSH-C and the viewfinder. I have found it to be a great camcorder with multiple features that I had not seen on other models in the price range($230+).

If anyone is thinking about purchasing a camcorder, I highly recommend the Panasonic PVL353 or higher model. You will enjoy this camcorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA!
I received the camera for christmas from my family this year and I haven't been able to use it once. The picture quality is horrible, it's grainy and the colors are dull - when I zoom in on things the colors become more gray and the picture gets extremely grainy. I sent it in to get repaired and it came back with broken buttons and the picture is still horrible. Apparently the people at the factory repair place couldn't find anything wrong with it. If that is the way it is supposed to work than it is a piece of junk! This camera has just been a nightmare. The same camera from panasonic a year ago the PV-L452 is a great camera. My brother got it for christmas. The quality is amazing and the colors are really bold. If you want to buy a panasonic camera go with the older model its 10,000 times better!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners AND experts.
A very nice hand-held camcorder, with more 'bells and whistles' than a comventional camcorder. When camcorder is turned off, a lens protective gate closes, minimizing dust and damage. Auto shut-off after 5 minutes if camcorder is not used. The built-in light has three settings: On, Off, and Auto. Motion detector mode can act as a security camera. Flip-out-and over color LCD screen is handy when holding camera above crowds to video tape stage performances, etc. Built-in speaker acts with LCD screen for accurate, immediate checking of taping. Easy to use for all. Only drawbacks: Maximum tape length is 90 minutes in SLP mode, and auto focus has some trouble in certain circumstances (which are few). Manual focus wheel (conveniently mounted below lens)compensates in most circumstances. Using LCD screen or built-in light drains battery quicker. Use the conventional B/W viewfinder.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Great
It's a Great Camcorder It is Lightweight and has a very vivid LCD Screen. The Instructions are very very simple to understand! I take everywhere with me you never know what you can get on video with this little thing! I am giving this 5 stars I would rate it 100 if I could. Buy it! It is worth it!
