Great pictures, decent camera
First, I have to say that I love this little camera. I got it for my birthday. The pictures are awesome and I can even print them out from my computer and they look decent. I prefer to take my memory card, which was also given to me for my birthday, to our local CVS Pharmacy and print the pictures out. Unfortunately, just like everyone else has said, it certainly drains the batteries. I even got rechargable batteries as part of my birthday gifts and they just get drained in a matter of about 10 - 15 pictures with the lcd screen on. I, too, am experimenting with different settings.

A GREAT gift!
I received this camera as a birthday present & have been thrilled with what I can do with it! I was taking pictures and movies on the first day, which happened to be New Year's in Times Square, NY! I was able to take about 18 pictures & a 30 second movie clip without installing a memory card. I was then able to view and/or delete those pictures for the next week on the original batteries. It does eat batteries, I've gone through 3 sets in a month, but plan on getting the rechargeable ones. So its not the worst! One of the best features for me is that the camera zooms with a touch of a button and without the lens protruding from the camera. It is very easy to use & takes GREAT pictures! They are good enough for print, easy enough to e-mail & quickly download to the computer so I can save or e-mail them, or have a new screen saver!

A Great All Around Camera
I received the Vivitar Vivicam 3715 camera as a Christmas gift last year. Since then it has proven to be a great camera for all around use. I've taken very detailed portraits which turned out with excellent clarity at 8" x 10". It's a great camera for close up or long range depending on how it's set up.

If you have Windows ME or later, the camera sets itself up when plugged into a USB port. With Windows XP the computer is already set up, and transferring pictures can be done easily in less than a minute.

I particularly like the small size of the camera and the zoom feature which is done internally without a lens sticking out from the camera.

The case which comes with the camera attaches easily, by the attached loop, to a pants belt which makes the camera easy to carry around all day.

The 8MB internal memory is adequate for easily taking more than 50 pictures with an M setting with one star (normal detail). The addition of a memory card increases that number substantially.

The video feature works fine. The one big drawback, however, is the lack of sound.

Yes, this camera will go through batteries as with most digital cameras. I have been able to take 75 to 100 pictures and load them into my computer on one set of batteries (approx 1/4 to one half with flash, 1/2 to 3/4 without). The batteries definitely last longer with outdoor use where using a flash is unnecessary.

When the batteries (2AA) don't have enough juice left in them to power the camera, DON'T throw them away! They can still be used for many hours yet to power small AM FM walkman type radios or small cassette/CD players.

Another weak point with this camera is that in bright sunlight it is very difficult ( if not impossible) to see anything on the viewing screen.

Overall, this camera is an excellent buy for the relatively inexpensive price.

Never in stock - power hungry - broken upon receipt
I really wanted this camera - a great price for so many pixels. Their were 2 problems, however. First, the camera is almost never in stock. I would think that with such a high demand, Vivitar would get the idea & start making a few more of them.

Finally I received my camera and, to my disappointment, it drained the batteries constantly whether it was on or off. At a trip to Disneyland I found I had to buy and change the batteries 3 times.

I wanted to exchange the camera except for, guess what, there were none in stock. I would love to have one of these models that worked, however, I am entirely frustrated with the process.

batteries always need recharging
I bought mine at the local Wal-Mart for $132.00 in Nov.03. My first set of batteries that were included went dead the second day I used it. After two more sets of batteries I got the rechargable nimh type, and I constantly recharge those. I'm not taking but a few pics each time I use it but jeeze it sure does drain the power. Also, every time you put the fresh batteries back in you have to set up the camera again. I wish someone could tell me why my windows xp system won't retrieve the photos from the usb port-I've tried everything and asked many others what could be wrong! I've uninstalled the ports and reinstalled them and the instructions say I don't need to use the drivers included, my xp system is supposedly ready for this system. Meanwhile, my batteries go dead again trying to download the pics to a cd instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

great camera!
I purchased this camera less than a week ago and I love it. It takes great pictures, even close-up pictures without the flash whiting everything out. The camera has tons of features I haven't even begun to use but it's nice to know they are there. It is super easy to delete pictures and download pictures to your computer -- I didn't even have to download any drivers or software. The camera even takes video clips. My only complaints with this camera are that it eats batteries, but that is something you can expect with a lot of cameras. Also, it takes HUGE pictures, but that can be easily fixed with editing software. The case over the lens works well, and the camera even came with a black velvet camera case to help protect and maintain your camera. A great 3.3 megapixel camera for a cheap price!!

Good Quality, Simple Camera
I've been thinking about buying a digital camera for quite some time now, and when I saw this on sale for $70 at a local Fry's Electronics store, I bought it. It took me five minutes, tops, to set it up and begin taking pictures. With XP, it was very easy to link it to my computer. The images are excellent, very clear. My only complaint is how quickly it eats up batteries. Other than that, it is an excellent camera for the price.

Piece of Junk
This camera is a piece. I have had problems with it every since I have gotten it for christmas. I was going to return it but My spouse thought he may know what the problem was. I can take approximately 8 pictures and the batteries are dead. Then even with new batteries it shuts off right when it comes on. I don't recommend this camera to anyone.

Fun little camera
I bought the camera new at a pawn shop last week. I wanted something inexpensive to start with before investing in a high priced camera. The only problem so far is having to access the memory card through the battery door which requires resetting the date, time, etc. I have been looking for a AD/DC adapter to use for downloads and accessing the memory. Using the LED outside is nearly impossible. It's the right size for taking anywhere and seems to be built with quality in mind. The Kodak cameras I looked at seemed very cheaply constructed so I looked elswhere.

An "ok" Camera if you get it cheap!
I bought one at Target for $88. Not bad for a 3.3 mp camera. But it is a cheapie ... cheap optics, cheap construction. If you get a good price and go in knowing the limitations, probably an ok deal. Close-ups suck, must be apx 24" away or image is blurry. The flash takes forever to recharge & washes out images when used. If you want to take your SD memory card out to transfer images, you have to open your battery door & reset date/time each time. If you're taking a pic in a even pretty good lighting setting you need to hold the camera perfectly still for quite a while or image will be blurry. Don't try to review images on the nominally backlit display unless you are in a closet. It's a battery hog, buy recharge-ables .. flash charges a bit faster with rechargables too.. Minimal onboard memory, you'll want to upgrade memory right away. All in all it's ok for the price & pics are really good if taken outdoors during the day. ... Read more

Jewel in the dust! The real professional camera!
I was looking for a replacement for my trusted but worn out
manual Pentax K-1000 SLR.
Its spare parts and repair costs became very prohibitive.
I didn't want to buy used and old camera for the reasons given above.
I've tested at least fifteen different modern professional SLR's.
I stopped experimenting only when I came across this Vivitar V3800n camera.
I was amazed by the quality of the pictures and reliability of its mechanics.
This camera has all features needed in professional photography.
Depth of the field preview, wide range of the film speeds B-1/2000,
split image focusing, multiple exposure button, flash socket and direct Xcontact.
I completed two photographic seasons with this camera and purchased the second
one of the same model to keep it as a spare.
All my pictures selected and sold for publishing in the magazines and journals
I'm contracting with, were performed using this professional camera.
I can use all set of lenses left from my old Pentax with Vivitar 3800n camera
'cause they have the same K-type mount.

Great camera, poor lens
I purchased this camera as my first SLR to start learning photography.

The Good: The camera body is excellent. It has all the features one needs for manual photography including metering, depth of field preview, and multiple exposure.

The Bad: The lens is slow (f3.4). Unless the scene is very well lit, you'll find yourself shooting at f3.4 with a slow shutter speed almost all the time at ISO 100, even with a tripod. Also, I have never been able to achieve a sharp photograph with this lens, even at mid-range apertures (f8 and f11). At first, I attributed this to inexperience and poor technique. But as soon as I started shooting with a used Sigma lens, the difference was astonishing. I finally know what a sharp photograph looks like.

Overall, I would not recommend this camera package. The camera body is excellent, and is worth buying separately. However, the poor quality lens is not worth it. You will be much better off purchasing a used lens. The lens that comes with this camera can be very discouraging for beginning photographers.

I love this camera
I bought this camera for a beginners B&W photography class, and although it's basically the bottom of the line, it's a great little camera. All of my pictures came out clear, unless by my beginners error, of course. It's light weight and very easy to use. I'd reccomend this camera to anyone who wants a good SLR, beginner or non.

For those of us who love the essentials...
I love, love, love this manual camera. Personally, I feel that a lot of the bad reviews stem from the fact that some reviewers have skewed expectations for the V3800--it would probably be best to pack your cute digital point-and-shoot for Aunt Edith's party, for instance.

Don't get me wrong--it's the photographer, not the camera that produces a great picture--but this is definetely a device for those of us who are trying for "art", not the family scrapbook, and prefer not to be encumbered by extraneous settings.

I'm not saying I'll never come back to my cute little Rebel EOS(there's something to be said for not having to manually wind your film!) but it's wonderful to be able to set your exposure with a few little dials. Much faster than having to sort through the all the digital silliness. And who really uses that "Night Portrait Mode" anyway? Not I.

Of course, there are some flaws. The flash sync only goes up to 125 and the body is on the heavy side compared to the featherlight cameras produced these days. But even these "flaws" are easy to ignore; I can live without a fast flash sync, as I'm not one for sports photography and prefer ambient light; I also find that my camera shake is greatly reduced now that I've got something to grab on to.

Buy it!! Makes you feel like Brenda Starr or Mickey Spillane, depending :)

Want quality? Better keep looking.
I recently bought a Vivitar v3800N camera from a local, specialty camera store. After having the camera for less than 2 months and having shot only about 4 rolls of film the camera BROKE! I have taken extreme care with this camera and have not found a reason for it to malfunction. I will not recommend this camera to anyone.
I am not trying to be harsh or unfair toward Vivitar. I would just write this problem off as a fluke, but I have had two of these cameras and this exact same thing has happened....twice! If you are curious about the problem, the shutter is jammed, for some unknown reason, which I might add is quite expensive to repair. I will not buy another Vivitar camera. ... Read more

The ViviCam 3615 shows just how much digital cameras have improved in the past few years. Good and [reasonable priced] entry-level camera
This is my second digital camera, and it didn't cover my expectations. I'm an advanced amateur on film photography, and the results with this digital camera were just acceptable. If you are planning to do some printing from your pictures, this camera won't be good enough, but if you gonna use it only for digital viewing and emailing, it'll be ok.
Pros: low price (a bit more than a hundred bucks at your local wholesale store), high resolution, macro capability, good flash light, ease of use, nice pictures at daylight, and nice advanced features like 2x digital zoom, EV compensation, whites balancing and red-eye reduction.
Cons: slooow to focus and to be ready for the next shot, lack of an optical zoom (I know, I know, it's only a hundred-bucks-entry-level camera, but it could have been nice to have); only 800x600 and 1600x1200 resolution pictures but nothing else in between, heavy weight, extremelly awful results under flourescent lighting, and definivelly the worst of all, short battery life. It drains the batteries like crazy, and by using the flash, the LCD and 1600x1200 resolution altogether, it will swallow a fresh set of (4) alkaline batteries by making only 40 to 50 shots (ouch). A good set of rechargeable batteries is a must.

When they send me on an assignment, they expect lots of photos of all the failed parts of the car and uploaded the same day. I was truly impressed with the ViviCam 3615!!!Being my first digital camera (although not my first Vivitar Product), I really didn't know what to expect. But, I found this camera very easy to use with outstanding photo results. It comes complete with user-friendly software and all the cables (USB and video cables for t.v. viewing) at an awesome price. I take lots of close up shots of vehicle ID's and the smallest print comes out crystal clear (at 1600 x 1200). If lighting is a problem (as is the case in many repair shops I visit), either the built-in flash or the enhance mode on the software can be used for adjustment. Definately invest in the Flash Card for added memory, especially if planning on taking a lot pix before uploading. A 32MB Flash Card increases the capacity up to 347 pix at 600 X 800 "good quality" resolution or 85 pix 1600 x 1200 "good quality" resolution. Other than Vehicle ID #'s, I usually keep the setting at 600 x 800 "best quality" and can easily shoot 60-75 pix with no hassles. My biggest and only gripe-it goes through alkaline batteries like crazy and I am looking to switch to a compatible rechargeable set. Other cameras I shopped were more expensive and did not come with cables or the freedom to use AA batteries. Overall, EXCELLENT PRODUCT AT AN EXCELLENT PRICE...I definately recommend it. ... Good camera until it stopped working.
At the time I bought this camera, it was the least expensive 2 MP digital I could find. It took clear crisp pictures and was easy to use until it stopped working exactly one year after I purchased it. The LCD screen went blank and it wouldn't snap any pictures even with fresh batteries. I called the customer service, told them that my 12 month warranty has just expired and they told me to send it to them anyway. I'll wait and see what happens.

Viewmasters are nicer
A large group of my co-workers and I each recieved this product as a gift (about 300 of us). Regardless of our individual gratitude levels, not one of us has had a single nice thing to say about the product. First and foremost it is a horrible binocular as well as a horrible digital camera. Secondly, many of us (not all) can't get the eyepieces close enough together to be able to see in stereo. Thirdly, the battery pack hits you in the nose when you put it up to your face making it impossible to get the unit close enough to your eyes to be able to look through the lenses. It's lightweight and cheap feeling. Not one of us has taken a single photo with it that has come out anything but terribly blurry. I wouldn't spend $1 for the product and would return it for a full refund if I had in fact purchased it myself. I'll be passing mine off as a gag gift at my next "white elephant" party. I pity the recipient.
