2-0 out of 5 stars Great lens, but experiencing problems
I enjoyed this lens very much when I got it. Problem is that it's Auto focus isn't working on my Canon EOS-5. It worked fine in the begining. It's not now. I'm going to send it in and see if they fix it and if it works well afterwards. Never been dropped and hasn't been used all that much. Not sure if it's just mine or if others have had this problem. It might need to be reprogrammed. Buy with caution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lens.. Unaware Amazon.com
...I used the lens at a wedding and it was just perfect. It's a little tough on the focusing and the zoom but that's ok at least I know it's going to stay put.

I can't wait to use it on my digital SLR and see how it looks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
I'd love to review this lense, unfortunately it isn't the one that I received. I purchased this lense, but received a much slower 28-105mm F3.8-5.6 UC-III lense instead (62mm filter). Make sure you get the actual lense you are paying for.

5-0 out of 5 stars pound for pound the best 28-105mm lens on the market!!
I purchased this lens about a month ago! From the moment I took it out of the box I knew this was going to be a great lens! the construction of the lens is solid! it uses a 82mm filter wich lets a lot of light in! this is good for indoor pics, and also keeps your pics bright and sharp! I also own the Sigma 70-300 APO
and I use the 28-105mm about 75% of the time! I use to use Canon lenses exclusevly! but after reading reviews and experincing Sigma quality for myself! I now use Sigma lenses "Exclusively"
These lenses could go head to head with the big boys "canon & nikon" and beat them every time on price, and tie if not beat them in photo quality! I highly recomend Sigma.

5-0 out of 5 stars So nice I'm getting one twice
I had the Canon 35-80 and 22-55 zooms for my Rebel. They're very small and super light but feel flimsy, and they are fairly "slow" lenses, meaning no low light or really shallow depth of field. I bought the "faster" Sigma 28-105 from Amazon earlier this year. It's bigger and beefier than the "stock" Canon EF lenses. It looks quite respectable, and it feels very sturdy. I cvan't speak to the finer points of its accuracy, but the Sigma's ideal range and low aperture capabilities made it, for me, the only lens I'd ever want for the Canon - what a nice, simple, handy system!
This summer, I took a spill into Lake Powell with the Rebel and the 28-105. Ooops! Youch! I may try to fix the water damage, but I'm getting another Sigma 28-105 right away, so I won't be without a reliable one, factory fresh. It's that good. I wouldn't want to be without this lens as THE BEST compact backup system to my more cumbersome and finicky medium format Mamiyas. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Soft focus, too many compromises
I have owned this lens for about two years, and found that it was a fine lens at first, when I was just starting to learn with a good camera, but that it quickly outwore it's usefulness and now mainly gathers dust.

Sigma gave up a lot on this lens to add the Macro element, which lets you focus in very close. The focus is pretty soft at longer lengths, producing pictures that are noticably unsharp. There are manual focusing difficulties resulting from saving much of the focal rings for the macro, so that you have a lot of room to turn for focusing from 2 to 3 feet but very little precision in focusing from twenty to thirty feet (and that is a range I use much more).

Also, the lens has difficulties in low light, zooming in and out trying to focus on something, anything. I got this in a kit with the 70-300 lens, which I still use all the time and I think is a good lens for the money. On this lens, I would recommend investing instead on a good 50mm lens and just taking a few steps forward or backward to get your shots -- they will be much better shots than with this zoom.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing lens for the price.
First, let me say this lens is one of my favorites. I own this lens for my Pentax PZ-1 and have read MANY reviews about it. The price is cheap. In fact, it's arguably the cheapest lenses in it's class. But don't mistake a cheap price as the sign of a bad lens. I use this lens for many occassions and at it almost always delivers GREAT pictures. Yes, it's not the single best lens in the world, but it is as good as many of the lenses I've used that are two or three times the price. Plus, if you break this one you can buy another without breaking your piggy bank ... or your credit card limit.

The two complaints most people make about this lens are, "It's a slow lens" and "It's almost impossible to focus manually." Let me put both those complaints to rest right now. First, when photographers refer to how "slow" a lens is, they don't mean how fast it can focus, they mean the F-stop setting. This lens is a F3.5-5.6. Granted, some expensive lenses at this focal length can go as low as F1.x, but most can't. And most experienced (and novice) photographers can use any lens that can go below F8. So, when people call this lens "slow," they should be talking about F-stops, not autofocus. I for one have found this lens to be more than fast enough for hand-held use. It's only been too slow once in about 1,000 shots.

Second, the focusing ring on this puppy is short. That means it's hard to focus manually. Still, that's to be expected on a smaller, cheaper lens such as this. Although it's tough to focus manually, it's not impossible. I've used manual focus on this lens several times and got great results ... just move the ring SLOWLY and you will get great manual focus. Nevertheless, keep in mind this IS an autofocus lens ... most people won't focus the lens manually. And on that note, the autofocus is spectacular.

Add in the macro ability of this lens and you've got one heck of a package! Oh, and don't forget ... It's CHEAP! If you can only afford one lens for your next vacation, make it this lens ... and use the $100+ you saved to buy more goodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-purpose lens
I got this lens for everyday use. It has a decent zoom range and a macro mode, making it more versatile than its Canon counterpart. The regular mode takes beautiful pictures at any distance. The macro mode is a little limited, but it does let you get just inches from the subject, good enough for basic close-up work. The close-ups were crystal clear. Although you can get closer with dedicated macro lenses, most people, like me, will find this lens more than sufficient.

5-0 out of 5 stars looking for clarity and simplicity?
If you are the SLR photographer who enjoys taking quality shots, this lens is for you! What's more, the zoom ring is well-positioned, and as far as i can tell, this is a very reliable lens. I have only had mine for a couple of months, but have already taken some brilliant shots with it! I would recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product for your Cannon
When I bought my Canon Elan II I opted for the Sigma lens over the Canon lens. What I based my decion on was that the Sigma Lens, although it does not have the second chip in it to make the whisper focus, it does come with the Macro feature, which with a flip of a switch, you can focus on things three inches from the lens, allowing for some great close-ups with flowers and other subjects. I consider it well worth your money, besides the whisper focus is not really worth the extra bucks. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Encompassing all popular focal lengths from the 50mm "normal" to 500mm ultra- telephoto, the Sigma 50-500mm f4-f6.3 EX RF HSM hyperzoom lens gives you amazing versatility, plus a 10:1 zoom ratio, while its rear focus system ensures fast, convenient manual focus. The use of an apochromatic design plus four optical elements composed of special low dispersion (SLD) glass, a seven-group zoom system, and multicoated optics combine to give you high-quality images.

This lens, featuring Sigma's silent hypersonic motor (HSM) focusing system, allows you to shoot pictures of your subject without the normal noise of an automatic focus system. In addition to its quiet, responsive AF function, you can also use the full-time manual focus at any time. The zoom lock mechanism helps reduce the "zoom creep" distortion that can occur when your lens is tilted up or down.

Sigma used magnesium in the tripod mount to help reduce the weight of the lens, just over 65 ounces, yet still it still maintains the strength and rigidity necessary to support the lens's weight. This model is dedicated to Nikon AF SLR cameras. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll never buy anything but a Sigma HSM lens again!
This is was my first Sigma EX HSM lens. The 50-500mm was just too good to pass up for the price. While I've had other Sigma lens I purchased them mostly for the price. The quality was OK/acceptable. But these EX HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) lens are the finest quality lens I've ever put my hands on! They are mostly metal vs mostly plastic. They are smooth as silk and extremely FAST focus. They seem not to seach back and forth as much for the focal point--they lock on almost immediately. This lens makes brilliant true color shots and works great with my Nikon D100. With the digital camera 1.4x factor this lens is like having a 70-700 on a film camera. The only note is the lens is HEAVY like as in 4lbs! You really can't imagine it until you mount it on the camera and shoot--you'll need a mono/tripod for using the 500mm. The lens comes with a beautiful case and a high-tech lens shade. You'll never buy anything but a Sigma HSM lens again. Too bad they don't make the HSM for all their models.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great zoom for the price
Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX RF HSM is a new addition to Sigma family of EX grade lenses. EX stands for "excellence" and is the high end of the manufacturing line. It means that the build quality of this lens is very good. You are not likely to end up with front glass falling out as it happens on some consumer-grade products. The quality of optics is rated "good" in its category of the wide-range zooms by www.photozone.de. However, this "good" is bordering with "average", so don't expect crisp sharpness of the prime lenses especially at wide open aperture at 500mm. The lens is heavy and very big. People will definitely notice it when you carry it around. Hood, case and the tripod collar should come with the lens, which is a plus. Filters, though, may be quite expensive. The lens has no image stabilizer which make a tripod or a monopod necessary when you shoot for slide film. However, for digital or for 4x6 prints it may be okay. The big plus is that you don't have to change lenses when a different focal length is needed. Another big plus is its price. Nobody can beat Sigma in that. I recommend this lens for those who cannot afford long focal primes or for those who prefer the convenience of all-in-one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Made a Novice Photographer Look Like An Expert
Just began taking pictures with my Minolta Maxxum 5, which came with a lens up to 90mm. That was great but I wanted more. Since I like taking nature pictures, and portraits, I needed a macro lens. This one fit the bill. I highly recommend it to anyone. With the lens that came with the camera, and this Sigma lens, I will be set for a long time. It is also very easy to use in both Automatic Focus or Manual, and it's not heavy or cumbersome to carry.

Great buy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality Lens
This lens was an upgrade from my old Sigma 75-300 zoom, which was fine in it's time but just plain worn out. For those who aren't familiar with the Minolta Maxxum series, be aware that this lens has a pretty slow auto focus, but that is a limitation of the body and not the lens and it is still usable. You'll get more satisfaction from going manual focus.

I love this lens. Very accurate at all focal lengths, below average lens "flair" even without the included lens hood, and very comfortable in the hand. The ergonomics are first rate; you can hand carry it all day without much discomfort unlike the new Canon USM lens's, which are truly excellent and fast but Really Heavy.

The best thing is the Macro feature, which at 300mm gives a 1:2 ratio. This translates to incredible close-up 300mm shots at just 9 inches away!!! Fantastic, but bring your tripod (which you should have anyway).

Not a second of regret for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy
This is a magnific lense for your photos with a great price and high quality. ... Read more

This 105mm Sigma macro lens with a fast f/2.8 aperture satisfies you in every department. First of all it gives you a 1:1 true life size macro and these macro images comes out truly amazing... extremely sharp, good color saturation and contrast(on Pentax ZX-7). The 105mm focal length is also suitable for taking portraits. Portrait results have also come out extremely well. The EX finish is aesthetically pleasing, scratch proof and has a metal alloy body for sturdiness. The hood which is provided along with the lens matches well with it. One can also use a 77mm dia lens cap which fits perfectly on the hood, so that the hood can remain permanently on the lens (hood is threaded so that it can screw on the lens like filters.)

A bit of a bother is the clutch mechanism which on has to engage/disengage while changing between MF/AF. But on the positive side, the focus ring doesn't move (in AF mode) and one is more at ease while holding the camera. The other thing is the long rotational travel of the focusing ring while focusing a subject and in AF mode this could sometimes take a while. This could be somewhat solved by using the focusing limiter switch.

Definitely, a well made lens optically and structurally and should satisfy one and all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lens
I bought this lens when they had a sale. It was [price] without shipping charge, and I think the price was the lowest anywhere.
I love this lens. It is a lot sharper than EF 28-135mm IS, which I use most of the time. Now I can take good pictures of teeth from my patients and also good portraits for my baby.
Overall it is very versatile and overall quality is excellent, and I would recommend to anyone interested in macro photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Close to be excellent
Sigma 105 EX macro is considered one of the best primes for its optical quality. MTF tests, which determine how sharp the lens is, place it just below the famous Canon 100mm Macro. The EX sign tells that the build quality of the lens is higher than that of a consumer-grade product. The big plus is a price. It is almost twice cheaper than Canon 100mm. ALso, it comes with the case and a hood and Canon does not. The drawbacks, however, include potential incompatibility with the future Canon camera bodies. I would highly recommend this lens for advanced amatures on a tight budget. ... Read more
