Amazon.com Product Description

The Sigma 2.0x APO Teleconverter lens features a high performance optical design with six elements in five groups. It is optimized for use with long telephoto and telezoom lenses, and is ideally suited for use with the 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX HSM zoom lens. Since it uses 10-pin electrical interfaces, there is no loss of autofocusing speed when these teleconverters are used with compatible HSM type lenses. This model is dedicated to Nikon AF SLR cameras. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars INCOMPATIBLE, INCOMPATIBLE, INCOMPATIBLE! Ugh!
See the excellent review below which lists the pitiful handful of Sigma lenses that this teleconverter is compatible with. I wish I'd read it before I ordered it (I had to return it after opening it, the list is only INSIDE the booklet*). I have several wonderful Sigma lenses, but none are on that list, and the ones on that list would duplicate what I have, so I have no intention of bying one of the few lenses this teleconverter could work with. *Also inside the booklet is a warning that trying to use the lens with any lens not on the list may damage both the converter and the lens. Well, yeah, a quick glance shows that they used the standard connecting bayonet at only one end (the camera end) and used some strange lens-specific screw mount at the other end. And the possible reason: My Nikon camera body has plenty of space behind the bayonet mount in case the lens needs to extand back a little, but this teleconverter extends FORWARD beyond its front so only a lens with plenty of space "in front of" the bayonet mount (ie, at the lens' camera end) would be able to mate with this. So it looks like they have to specially design lenses just to be compatible with this odd teleconverter, and that would explain why the list is so short.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
This converter not only work only on Sigma Lenses - BUT CERTAIN SIGMA LENSES!

The converter will work in MF mode only, unless noted, on the following APO lenses:
Macro 180mm f3.5 EX IF HSM
300mm F2.8
300mm F2.8 EX HSM (AF)
Tele Macro 300mm F4
Tele Macro 400 F5.6
500mm F4.5
500mm f4.5 EX HSM
800 F5.6
800 F5.6 EX HSM
1000mm F8
50-500mm F4-6.3 EX RF HSM
70-200mm F2.8 EX HSM (AF)
70-210mm F2.8

This has really turned me off from Sigma, as this IMPORTANT information is NOT listed anywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teleconverter.
This 2X teleconverter is a great addition to any fast Sigma lens. I use mine with my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM. It is sharp, well made, and a relative bargain. I recently used it to shoot at Road Atlanta and was very impressed with the results.

Of course, it is not designed to use with Nikon lenses, only Sigma lenses on Nikon bodies! And that job it does very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teleconverter
This teleconverter is an excellent companion to Sigma's 70-200 2.8 or 100-300 2.8 lenses. It allows HSM and all electronic functions to work and, from my use on the 70-200, it has very little effect on sharpness.

Of course, it DOES NOT work with Nikon lenses, but then again it was never designed to. If you want a converter for Nikon lenses, buy a Nikon converter.

Becasue you lose two stops with this converter, I recommend trying the Sigma 1.4x converter also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sigma 2.0X Teleconverter
Although the teleconverter fit on my Nikon camera, my Nikon compatable lenses would not fit on the teleconverter, thereby rendering it nonfunctional. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sigma combined a five-lens group zoom system with an aspherical lens element when they designed the 170-500mm f5-f6.3 APO aspherical lens. This combination gives your images sharp high-contrast images throughout the entire zoom range. Its unique apochromatic lens design and three SLD glass elements help eliminate the vibrations usually found in ultra-telephoto lenses. Since the front lens group doesn't rotate, polarized filters are extremely easy to use. This lens also has a built-in rotary tripod mount to help keep the lens steady, reducing vibration during shutter release and keeping your images sharp and clear. 5-0 out of 5 stars Top rated Lens
One of the best on the market. Even using a 2x adapter to get 1000mm. It is big and not too heavy and has a tripod collar ring for added stability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good lens but a few problems
Received lens as a gift, was thinking of buying myself. Was impressed with the looks of this monster, looks very expensive to unfamiliar folks. I use this lens on my Canon Elan 7e and from the start had a problem that I wasnt informed of when bought by friend. Problem was that certain Sigma lenses don't work properly with the new Canon camera. After some research, i found I had to ship my lens to New York Sigma factory for a free upgrade, A+. received lens in a few weeks and problem was solved. Other problem was the tripod collar is in bad spot for use with some Bogan tripod heads. the head must be used sidewards to be used with the lens. Not a big problem but a problem. Next problem is that when carrying camera with lens attached and pointing downward, the lens slides to the fully extended position and could get damaged by banging into things when not noticed right away. Other than that I like the lens. Its definitely not a pro lens but it will serve the advanced amateur well.

5-0 out of 5 stars reasonably priced, sharp and clear
This is a moderately priced alternative telephoto lens. Althought quite bulky, lens are not heavy, and they fit perfectly well in my LowePro Min-Trekker backpack.

Lens are not fast enought to take pictures without a tripod in less then bright light conditions, however, if you can afford a longer exposure times and tripod, you can get good results. Not suited for sports or fast animal photography, but if you want zoom into the landscape, architecture or people, here is a perfectly fine lens...There is really no good alternative lens if you need a range of 170-500 mm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful quality for the money!
I own two Nikon N80 bodies. I used to own Nikon lenses only. Then I had trouble with the Nikon zoom and traded it in for a Sigma. Funny thing - the Sigma focused more clearly and easily than Nikon's own lens! I also own a Tamrom 1.4 teleconverter which did not work at all with the Nikon lens - but it works beautifully with this Sigma lens. I recently got some wonderful closeups of butterflies using the teleconverter with this lens - hand-held! I highly recommend this lens.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Lens for Sports, Close-Ups or Girl Watching
As a telephoto zoom, this lens is very versatile. Its a fine (100-135mm) portrait lens. Its great for sports or animal photography (135-300mm). With the macro feature, its wonderful for taking photos of flowers and nature. And with its long telephoto capability, it makes a cool girl watching lens. For capturing the mood of summer or of being on vacation, nothing says it better than a pretty girl photographed in the location in local attire. (With a telephoto zoom lens, even for a portrait, its easier to separate the subject from the crowd or background in order to frame the composition perfectly.)

As a Nikon owner, I use this lens with my Nikon N-90, which has a flash sync speed of 1/250th of a second, fast enough to hand hold with a telephoto lens. I also use the dedicated Nikon SB-28 flash which has a zoom head to extend the flash's range; and when combined with the Nikon "D" lens mount on the Sigma lens (which tells the camera subject distance) and Nikon's 3-D Matrix Metering, this combination of equipment allows me to shoot telephoto fill-flash in broad daylight (with no extra thinking required. Just compose and shoot). Nothing makes the subject pop -- in terms of brightness and color -- more than fill-flash. I'll usually use the Sigma 70-300 in this set-up to capture animals or people. (My friends are always amazed at the brightness and color saturation of my photos. They think I use special film.)

I also employ this lens/camera/flash combination (using 400 or 800 speed film) to photograph my son's basketball games indoors. By using a fast enough film, I can perfectly balance the ambient light with the flash to create perfectly natural indoor sports photos. (Using flash makes the color of his jersey pop. Attempting to shoot indoors using only available light will leave the colors murky.)

When I'm out and about, I'll normally carry, as a back-up to my Nikon/Sigma set-up, an autofocus point-and-shoot 35 mm camera (such as my Olympus Stylus DLX 28-90) so I don't need to change lenses. (It's much easier to whip out the autofocus camera for the wider angle shots than it is to switch lenses. It's also much lighter to carry.)

What's best about the Sigma 70-300 is that it does all of the above -- at a very affordable price. If you're looking for a great telephoto zoom, this is the lens to get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality at a great price
This is a nice compact lens at a great price! It fits so easily into a camera bag and is great for travel and just having a all-around general purpose lens with a great zoom...it's really like having 2 lenses in 1! (a 28-80mm, and a 70-200mm zoom lens). I really don't notice any aberrations in the picture quality, and it works just fine with the Nikon camera body. The only supposed drawback is that Nikon camera bodies purport to use a "3D Matrix Metering" system that allows distance to be used to enhance picture quality (and that feature only works on Nikon G and D lenses), but the pictures that I've taken in the automatic mode of the camera look pretty good. Anyway, to sum it up:
1. 2 lenses in 1
2. *very* compact, fits almost anywhere!
3. great price
4. good optics ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST IN THE PRICE RANGE
I'm photographing wildlife as a hobby for about 6 years now and before this lens I used the regular 70-300 zoom lens and due to budget I could'nt buy any of the brand's telephotos until I found this lens ,at first I was suspicious because it seems too cheap for a 500mm lens but this was before I received my first photos and transparencies from the lab because it turned out to be way better than I could ever imagine, the photos were great, very nice color and contrast, not to mention the depth of field of a telephoto which is very shallow and makes the main object very strong ,the image comes with a very nice blurred background and a very shrp main objects ,image wise this lens is very good (not only for the price range )and the only drawback is the slow auto focus . Anyway, this lens forces the use of a sturdy tripod so you should take it in account. after about a year with this lens I can say that I'm more than satisfied ,there is no match for it in the price range ...
