3-0 out of 5 stars Great copier, so-so printer
If you can handle the toner costs, this units works well as a copier and it's very impressive at copying photographs. Sharp puts the same workings into a slightly different case and sells it to Xerox where it is retagged as a workcentre. We've had this Xerox unit at work and it has been great as a copier but we had to remove it from printer duty because it was always locking up and printing solid black pages whenever we asked it to print documents over about 3 pages long. I bought the Sharp for my home hoping the problem was fixed. Long story made short: It wasn't. I took it back and got a Brother that produces quality that is about the same but it prints faster and doesn't lock up. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

A multitasking digital camcorder, the Sharp VL-NZ105U features a large 3-inch LCD monitor, 10x optical and 300x digital zoom, and digital image stabilization. You can also shoot digital still images, save them on the included 8 MB memory card, and then transfer them to your PC.

Lens
With an optical zoom magnification of 10x, the VL-NZ105U also has a digital zoom--which works by electronically enhancing the optical image--that can magnify the picture up to 300 times. The digital image stabilization system keeps the picture steady and solid throughout zooms and camera shakes.

Other Features
With its 270-degree variable angle, you can hold the VL-NZ105U in a variety of angles to record over people and objects or for shots close to the ground. You can even record yourself by rotating the view screen 180 degrees.

The built-in speaker allows on-the-spot playback with sound for checking and viewing video footage anywhere. An on-screen recording guide helps you line up landscape footage and can be used as a guide for easy framing of subject matter. The backlight compensation feature corrects exposure in poor lighting conditions.

The VL-NZ105U also features several digital effects (black and white, sepia, NEG) that can be viewed without affecting the original recording.

Digital Stills
The VL-NZ105U can also operate as a digital still camera. Full-motion video is recorded onto a DVC tape while digital stills are stored on the included 8 MB Secure Digital (SD) memory card for easy transfer to a PC.

Inputs and Outputs
The VL-NZ105U comes with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire; Sharp refers to this connection as iLink) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with over 500 lines of horizontal resolution--far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You'll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

The camera features excellent sound quality, recorded in either 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

16-bit audio includes one set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound. 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary into your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers a digital recording time of two full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Contents
This package comes with the VL-NZ105U camcorder, one rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, tripod adapter, remote control (and batteries), AV dubbing cables, wrist strap, lens cap, and 8 MB memory card. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little starter model for the family
This item was purchased for a couple of family special events. We wanted a dv camcorder that was packable--the whole thing, case, accessories, and all, had to fit in a small airline carry-on and still leave room for other stuff. We also needed USB and firewire capability, for use on both PC and MAC computers, and AV output capability for television display. And we wanted something that was cheap enough that it wouldn't break our hearts if we lost it on our travels, or destroyed it somehow. (With this family, anything is possible!)

The Viewcam configuration doesn't use an eyepiece viewfinder--everything is displayed on the LCD screen. It has two-hand operation with a light nylon wrist strap, like a standard digital camera. All this decreases the weight and increases the "point and shoot" ability.

Resolution on the LCD viewscreen is low, but finished tapes and stills are good to average for this price range. No noticeable color degradation on inside shots. No motor noise on film. Microphone picked up average conversation easily. Battery life lasted just about long enough for a 45 minute church service.

As advised by other customer reviews, we use only Sony tapes on this machine. We are also aware that repair service from Sharp is hard to get. This is a good, serviceable machine, especially if you find it at a low enough price to be almost considered "disposable"--as we did on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat this camera for the price!!
I was looking for an entry level Mini DV Camcorder when I came across this bargain. I've been pleasantly surprised to have had absolutely no problems whatsoever from any of its features. My Win XP machine had no problems recognizing either the SD card when hooked up via USB or the video output when hooked up via Firewire, and all transfers have gone off without a hitch. If you're considering this camera, but worrying about ease of use, worry no more!!

The camera is incredibly small and light, making it ideal for the uses I have for it. It goes with me to Taekwondo tournaments, on hiking expeditions, and will soon accompany me on a road trip to the beach. It's about the same size and weight as a regular 35mm or digital camera, meaning you don't have to lug around the bulk usually associated with camcorders.

Video and audio quality are both great, although video gets a little grainy in low-light situations (but nothing too bothersome).

5-0 out of 5 stars My First CamCorder purchase
This was my first actual purchase for a camcorder. I have experience with other units because of my job in computer technology. My main reason for buying this camcorder was the price. It had all of the features I needed as well. It has Firewire (IEEE 1394) to download the video to a PC, and it has USB to download the still shots to a PC. The quality is very nice. We took it on vacation to the Gulf of Mexico and were pleased with the convenient size and weight. I would definitely recommend this unit for someone to purchase. (By the way, at the time of our purchase, we received a $100 rebate from Sharp since it was purchased on Amazon.com but I don't believe that is currently available).

5-0 out of 5 stars Works with iMovie
I love this little camera. And, after seaching all over for drivers for Mac OSX, I followed the advice of a previous review, bought the appropriate firewire cable, and iMovie recognized it immediately.

The picture and sound quality is exceptional for the price and it's small enough to throw in a pocketbook and carry around everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camcorder!! I especially like a few key features!
Positives:
1. You can recharge this camcorder by plugging it directly into an electric outlet- no dealing with rechargable batteries :)
2. Can take still photographs & uses SD instead of putting the stills on the tape.
3. While in playback mode (watching video footage you took), you can pause it and take stills from the tape onto the SD card.
4. The camcorder lasts a long time & I do not have to recharge it often :)

Negatives:
1. The quality of the still photos is not great but it is good for emailing.

Overall I love this camcorder because of the 'Positives' I mentioned above- it has everything I need. I know that the stills are not great quality but for the price of this camcorder I can manage ;) This is a great deal! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice product
I bought this camcorder one month ago just for my holiday tour. This is a nice item considering its price. The image is sharp. The voice recorder is really nice. It can record even some remote voices. Easy to use.

The con is there is no cover for the LCD. I suggest you to buy a bag for this camcorder.

2-0 out of 5 stars Spend 50 bucks more and get a far better product
I bought this product because it was cheapes, but then I saw another MiniDV camera from Canon (ZR60) which was only slightly costlier than this camera but had far more features and made this camera look completely inadequate.

Following are the cons of this camera:
1. No viewfinder. If you want to waste your battery, this camera ensures it by having no options besides LCD.

2. No cover for LCD. Can be easily scratched etc.

3. Big big cons for me: Not ergonomic, no good way to hold this camera. No strap on handle

4. No AV-DV conversion. Bad if you want to record your TV or old VHS tapes onto MiniDV

5. This was the problem I faced but ejector mechanism of this camera does not work reliably. Gave me lots of problem.

Do yourself a favor, buy some Canon or Sony camcorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reasonable Value for a Budget DV Camcorder
The DV camcorder market finally hit my price point at ~$$$(After rebate) in this product. . . Does it have all the bells and whistles? No. Does it perform as advertised? Pretty much -- if you take the time to read the manual and consider its' limitations. It does best in favorable lighting, but does have features that compensate for sub-optimal lighting conditions (generally found indoors). No night/low light mode, and the better the lighting, the better the colors. The lack of a viewfinder (unit has LCD panel only) has yet to be a hindrance -- although I haven't tried it outside in full sun/glare yet either. The resolution is good; the case design and user interface is different than all other camcorders I've owned, but easy to adapt to; the IEEE 1394 connection works flawlessly in Win XP (with appropriate video editing software -- not included, firewire cable -- not included) in both directions. It has the standard special video effects (sepia, B&W, etc), a still feature that records a frame onto the DV tape as long as the button is active (no semiconductor removable memory -- remember this is an entry level unit). Spare high capacity batteries can be found online for <$$ delivered. Bottom line, used correctly this is a very good value at around $$$ (after incentive pricing). . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp Mini DV Camcorder
We bought this for it's simplicity, and it is just awesome~!

This is just as good as any larger model, with no heavy accessories, seperate bag to lug around, literally just throw it in a larger purse, or in our case the diaper bag :), and you're on your way. My 13 year old figured out how to use it in about 3 minutes, couldn't be easier, and picture quality is outstanding. I LOVE this camcorder! Thank you, Sharp! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CATV says "WOW!"
The compact size of this TV allows it to fit comfortably on the top shelf of a bookshelf. The picture is as clear as one can get without investing a whole lot more. When the Time-Warner CATV people have come to the premises, they have given it a "WOW!" rating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look¿s good but poor TV resolution
I bought this TV about five days ago. I was the highest cost unit in the store so I expected video quality at least as good as my old Sony TV. However the picture is fuzzy with high degrees of pixalization. For small graphics the pixalization causes actual "sparkling". After watching the history channel where they place small graphic on the lower right hand corner throughout the program I noticed that I was drawn to the graphic more than the actual show. I am going to get a 4:3 model or wait for the new generation of LCD with 3:2 drop-down and better conversion circuitry.

5-0 out of 5 stars a little too blue
some seans come out too blue but most of the time it is great. when I saw it in the stores it had animations on it not live action so it was harder to tell how good the pict realy was, but very nice pict great for the places you don't have room most tvs.the speaker space for the speakers on the sides is too wide.
The speakers cabnets themselves could have been narrower, the cabnet the speakers are in are twice as wide as the actual speakers.
I wish it was in black, since my purchase I have seen it refurbished in black, but no brand new in black. wish it didn,t cost more than a big screen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so delighted...
...with this purchase. Even I was skeptical at first to buy this one bcoz of lack of reviews and few stores & web-sites selling them.

After doing a lot of research online, I had gone to Fry's to buy the Fuji's 3800 (PC World second best). And saw this Sharp one there. Played with it and I liked it. More bcoz of the price.

Since I have had a very good experience with Sharp electronics in the past, hence decided to trust this one..

Over the weekend at a friend's b'day party, compared it with a higher pricedSony 4MP cybershot and a 2MP Nikon and this one was just amazing. My friends were all "Ah" & "Wow" !!

- Far better, brighter and sharper LCD display (CG Silicon developed by Sharp which has 134000 pixels, double the conventional 66000 pixel LCDs on most cameras)

- Pictures were so sharp and bright. Even under their poorly lit room. The best pic quality amongst all the 3 cameras.

-Other features worth noting found only in high end cameras:
- Video Out PAL/NTSC
- Black & White Mode
- Manual Aperture and shutter speed controls
- Canon lens
- AC adapter bundled with the package. Most camera's you have to buy it separately.

- Very easy operation and upload to PC. Like a thumb drive, you will see that the camera takes an available drive (say e:\ or f:\) on your computer. You can then drag and drop files like you do it on your PC from drive C:\ to A:\ etc.

Fianlly I would really recommend this camera to every new user and one who is upgrading from 1 or 2MP.

Infact I would rather advice to go for VE-CG40U 4MegaPixel with audio recording and built in speaker and microphone. It was only 60 more at Frys that day. Now it is selling for over 288 at Frys' outpost.com and for 299 you get a Sakar AC/DC charger with 4 NiMH batteries along.

One thing I cannot comment for sure is the battery life. Maybe in my next review. And only thing I would have desired more from this camera is a Silver body !

Happy clicking !

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
You may struggle to find one of these since Sharp have discontinued it. Well worth the 2 c-notes from Outpost however.

The 16Mb card is OK for snaps, holding over 100 pictures at 1Meg resolution but only 12 at the highest setting so I'd suggest a 128Meg card (or even two - it only accepts up to 128Mb). Also, like most Digital Camera's it eats batteries (4xAA's) so you will have to purchase rechargeables. All in all with this camera it's possible to get great performans and an extra 128Megs of storage and rechargeables.charger for three hundred which is excellent considering the costs of competing camera's.

What I like most about the aesthetics is that it looks like a real camera and not a toy which even some of the better brands seem to do. This camera is heavier than most which again, I feel is a strong point. I had considered the Fuji 3800 until I picked it up in a store and found it to be rather 'plasticky'

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Problems
My relatively new camera suddenly shut off (with lens still extended) while I was shooting, and won't turn back on even with new batteries or adapter. Still covered under parts warranty (but not labor). The service center said this is a fairly common problem with this camera. I have to pay like $30 to have shipped back and forth from service center and fixed under an additional $80 flat rate--over $100 to fix!

Secondly, the software is not fully compatible with Windows 2000 or 98. The software is missing a USB driver: usbntmap.sys for Win 2000. According to on-line groups and Microsoft, this is also a common problem, and I found that it's not worth the hassle to try to fix. Sharp's software glitches can necessitate use of a (fortunately cheap) card reader to transfer photos to your computer. Sharp customer service claims that it's Microsoft's fault; however, the problem is unique to this camera model and appears to be Sharp's deficiency.

Thirdly, the camera is very slow, it takes awhile to power it up and take photo. I had to get used to removing the lens cap before powering up, and, press the shutter button well before target enters the moment I want captured due to shutter lag. Subject often moved on or blurred by time of actual image capture. Viewfinder is not aligned very well with lens. Also sucks up battery juice really quickly. I have to remember to always carry 4 AA (rechargeable) battery spares when using this camera.

I thought I was getting a good deal at first, with its nice Canon zoom lens, 3.2 MP, lovely LCD, many accessories, and pro-features. But after it stopped working and all the hassle I go thru hauling around the spare batteries and camera (no neck strap), and investing in a memory card and rechargable battery kit, I am thinking about calling it a loss of $200. I feel that it may better to invest in a more recognized manufacturer of digital still cameras (i.e., Canon, HP)-- apparently this is only 1 of 2 models that Sharp produced before giving up on the digital still camera market (but maintaining its devotion to camcorders).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value...
I bought this camera back a few months ago. Ididn't want to spend a lot so I took a chance on SHARP. I'm glad I did! Friends spent twice the $$$ on so called top of the line cameras. This SHARP camera takes great photos and looks like it will hold up mechanically as good as anything I've seen. You will be pleased if you buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars My friend asked me if I owned a "Nikon or Olympus" LOL
This is my first digital camera and I did a lot of shopping. I bought one and I am very happy with the results. I took some pics with the macro mode of some of my orchids sent them to my friends and they didn't believe those pics were taken by an amateur me--they were that good! Another friend commented on the clarity/color and asked me if my camera is a "Nikon or Olympus" so that says a lot about this Sharp model. Strong points: Color (I can't tell the diff. between the real thing and the picture), clarity, menus (easy and logical once you realize they are not that complicated), and the size is good. Any smaller and it would probably slip out of my hands. Great bang for the buck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and easy to use
I bought my camera 2 month ago and i am deligthted.
As the product is discontinued by sharp is a little difficult to find accessories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Durable
I bought this camera after seeing the reviews on amazon.com, in particular that it was durable. I enjoyed doing videos with it. But very soon after the warranty expired, the video stopped working. It still worked as a VCR, but not as a camera. When I sent it for repair at one of the Sharp partners, the bill to repair would have been higher than the cost of the camera!!! So be aware that this is not in fact a durable camera, and Sharp USA did nothing to help the confidence of this ex-customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Durable Camera
Lens cap broke, but other than that, I love this camera, It handles well while accompanying me all around the globe

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for Everyday Usage
I just bought the camera from Amazon with an awesome deal. I just fell in love with the camera when I opened its box and started using it. It comes with everything - battery, mini dv casette, adaptor - recharger, dc supply. It is very easy to use, very light and fits my hand very well. The recording time is only 60mins, but I hope as the tech improves we will get longer mini DVs. Sound and image qwuality is very good, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool product @ unbelievably low price
Just bought it and so far so cool. It has logical, easy to use features, great graphics and sound and a nice size and overall feel. It also comes with a mini DV tape and an a/c power supply ...Another cool feature is when you turn the lcd to face the subject, the image also appears in the viewfinder. 1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!
I had MAJOR problems with this camcorder. Upon first use, it taped, then proceeded to chew up the video I'd made of my cousin's wedding. I wouldn't complain so much if this had happened far later than after purchasing it, or if I'd used the wrong kind of tapes, or what-have-you, but the cassette loading compartment is very "sticky", won't release the tape very easily, and obviously the camcorder in general would prefer to consume your memories rather than preserve them for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I Wanted In A Camcorder
I wanted a reliable, simple to use, high quality camcorder at a good price and the Sharp VLAH150 so far has met all my criteria. You can't go wrong buying this camcorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two words to describe ease of use--Point and Shoot !!!
My wife and I looked at many camcorders and she instantly liked this one. I asked her why and she said the design(non-flip 3" screen) and the main reason was that there wasn't a million buttons all over it. Buttons scare the average person. Once we started using it she told me thats why she would not use our old one. This model is very simple and gives new meaning to 'point and shoot'. You can't beat it for the price (...).
