Amazon.com Review

This camcorder's incredibly easy-to-use touch screen, combined with high-quality Hi8 recording, a powerful 220x zoom, and a wide selection of both fun and useful features, make it a real standout. If you want all the options of a high-end camcorder, but can't stand fiddling with a ton of buttons, the Sharp VL-H890U is a good choice.

The Sharp VL-H890U uses Sharp's unique Viewcam design, which makes it easy to hold and shoot with. The body and LCD screen rotate separately from the lens, making it easy to shoot above your head or include yourself in the picture. Power, record on/off, and telephoto switches are large and easy to reach.

The Sharp VL-H890U's knockout feature is its touch-screen capability. Its large 3.5-inch LCD screen lets you click through the feature and VCR menus with the touch of a finger. This is the first camcorder we reviewed where we didn't have to delve into the manual to figure out how to set the various options--the touch-screen interface was so easy we figured everything out on our own.

The Sharp VL-H890U also includes a great selection of advanced--and fun--features, including a powerful 220x digital zoom and digital image stabilization. It offers auseful range of preset and manual exposure settings, fade capability, and fun picture effects (including the unique Stretch and Slim effects). The Viewcam also has snapshot and stillimage capabilities.

The Sharp VL-H890U uses the Hi8 format, which makes for extraordinarily sharp and colorful video--digital is the only format that will give you better quality. The only drawback to Hi8 is that you can't play the tapes in your VCR; you have to connect the camcorder to your TV for playback.

Pros:

  • Easy-to-use touch screen
  • Powerful 220x digital zoom
  • 3.5-inch swivel LCD screen
  • Wide range of exposure and picture effects

Cons:

  • Doesn't come with a light

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best product
for this price, i would recommend buying a Sony Hi8.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You'll ever need
Ah, the Sharp Hi-8. You'll feel like Hitchcock, with the weight of Truffuat. It's the everyman's dream for spontaneous and painless camcording. Light and convienient, durable and stellar for evening recording. It's all you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Response to the Con's of not having a light.
We were in Gatlingburg, TN and used the camcorder at night. The quality of the picture when we reviewed the tape was extrodinary. This camcorder recorded at night just as well as if it were daytime. This is probably why it doesn't come with a light from the factory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to use
This camcorder is the easiest I've ever used. It's features are just right for a user whose main goals are quality picture and ease-of-use. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

For great video you need a couple of things: a good lens and high video resolution. The Sharp VL-WD255U provides both. The standard MiniDV format offers sparkling video resolution (just compare it to the "low-tech" VHS-C), and a powerful 26x optical zoom. The optical zoom is augmented by the 780x digital zoom and digital image stabilization, but both come at the expense of a little resolution, so use with caution.

For those interested in still pictures, the VL-WD255U comes with the capability to record digital images onto either a MiniDV tape or SmartMedia card (not included). The camcorder comes equipped with four autoexposure modes that help make sure all your camera settings are correct. A 16:9 mode lets you shoot video in the same aspect ratio as feature films. The VL-WD255U comes equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value
I was all set to buy the Sony TRV230 Digital8 when the rebate for this model came along and caught my attention. I was upgrading from 8mm. Consumer Reports rates this mini-DV's picture (actually the model 250's) the lowest of all tested mini-DV's, BUT higher than any Hi8/VHSC. My first experience was bad. I bought 4 TDK standard grade tapes from Best Buy. Three of the four tapes had such bad dropout that at many times only half the screen was normal, the rest was unintelligible and the sound was garbled (I didn't try the fourth tape). Even the 'dirty heads' warning came on. Fortunately, I discovered this while playing around and not after some important event. I returned the tapes and tried standard grade Maxell tapes (without cleaning the heads) - The camcorder worked flawlessly. Coming from 8mm, the picture quality is incredible (through s-video to a 27" TV). I've had no trouble with various light conditions (like ambient indoor household lighting day or night, poorly lit street scenes, and in a high school gym). Only complaint: my old camcorder has individual fade, date/time, and manual focus buttons; This one requires menu traversing to do the same things (I think most mini-DV's are like this however). A BIG plus - this camcorder accepts analog input directly from my 8mm camcorder and VHS VCR. No other low-end digital camcorder can do this that I'm aware of (although the Sony TRV230 can). I've copied some of my old 8mm and VHS tapes onto miniDV (and then onto my PC for editing) with ease. The SmartMedia card is another plus since my digital camera already uses them and I have spares. Another plus will be the camera-controlled zoom mike (when it's available) - great for taping distant audio sources (like school shows) while reducing nearby noise.

Update 2/26/02 - still working fine. Using Pinnacle Studio DV for editing. I'm amazed at the number of reviews that indicate playback problems and don't say whether they've tried a different brand of tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL DIGITAL CAMERA AT A GREAT DEAL !
I bought this camera in December 2001. It Took a lot of time to find a digital camcorder and it was the best deal for me. Camera is easy to operate and has many great features : 26x canon optical zoom lens with a great HIGH MAGNIFICATION 1:1 MACRO, manual white balance for best colors at night, excellent Image stabilization at 780x, Smartmedia for photos, best of all : firewire or RCA for video in and out ; you can TRANSFERT YOUR OLD VIDEOS or RECORD your favorite TV channel on mini DV cassette with this camcorder !
Video is excellent, even in low light, and there is an integrated "cat-eye" mode for night shots. Battery last from 90 to 120 minutes depending your use of zoom and LCD monitor. Don't forget to buy the USEFUL Delkin DDREADER-14 USB Reader for SmartMedia to transfert photos to your PC.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Eject the Cassette" message, Sharp not very helpful...
I bought at the end of 2001, and I too have been getting these "eject the cassette" messages! I just didn't know how common this was until I started looking for a replacement camcorder just today, and happened to see mine (this one) and thought I would just check out the reviews, and was just SHOCKED to see how many others have had this same problem. I probably have used this camcorder a total of about 2 (yes, two) hours in the past 3-1/2 years, and have been getting the "eject the cassette" message for at least a year, I have to use a new tape each time I record, and cannot use the tape again (even to Play it), it tells me to "Eject the Cassette"--won't let me do ANYTHING. Sharp has not been helpful at all, continually referring me to 'my closest athorized servicer'. The closest place that will service it is in California, and I have to pay $55 just for them to 'assess' what the problem is. I have not found anyone in Arizona that can repair them, since they (an authorized Sharp servicer here) said when Sharp came out with these, they did not have a training program for repair shops to learn how to repair them. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMCORDER!!! Again, I am just shocked to read all these other reviews that sound IDENTICAL to the problems I have been experiencing practically since the camcorder was out of warranty, figures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this piece of Junk...
I bought this in summer of 2001, it worked fine for a year and then it started giving garbled play back, Eject tape and eating tape.
I wish I had these reviews before I bought this junk. This is my first and last Sharp product and sharp was not helpful at all when I explained what was happening. Please don't waste your money on this piece of Junk.

Thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Sharp VLWD255U - AVOID!!!
I bought this camcorder in November of 2001. In the first year I only used it a handful of times and got several "Eject The Cassette" messages. I didn't think much of it because it would work some of the time. After the warranty expired, the "Eject The Cassette" message appeared every time I used it for record or play regardless of what tape (new or used) I put in it. The last straw was when I took it to the Long Beach Gran Prix and it didn't work at all. In addition, the digital camera feature is so low quality that the pictures are not even worth emailing. Very grainy, little color. So, in summary, I have a non-working camcorder that is garbage or needs costly repair after one year. I wouldn't have given this such as harsh review if this was an isolated problem but after doing some research I found this "Eject The Cassette" issue is very common in Sharp camcorders. Unacceptable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Great!
This is my first camcorder. At this price I had no choice but to finally break down and buy one. The camcorder is small and lightweight. Instructions are simple. After charging the battery I was shooting right away. The picture quality is outstanding, the auto focus works great. The zoom is great too, providing you don't zoom in too fast...it takes a second or two to catch up to you. I love how easily it connects to my TV set for easy viewing on a big screen. I'm getting ready to go on vacation and looking forward to taking some great footage without lugging around something big and heavy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Value and Power for under $400
A few weeks ago I was shopping around for a a new camcorder to replace my sony video recorder from 1985. Since it had been so long since I had done any shopping I carefully weighed my options. Hi8 creates an almost 40% clearer and sharper image than regular 8mm. I don't have the equipment to connect my pc to a dv camcorder. After careful consideration and a few visits to my closest electronics shop I realized that this product was the easiest, most affordable Hi8 and I love using it. I would recommend this to anyone on a budget that has a desire to create quality video with ease and precision.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great features for the price, but poor durability
I actually got this camcorder 2 1/2 years ago as my first camcorder in anticipation of the coming birth of our first child. It offered a lot of great features for the price, and I thought the 3" viewscreen right on the camcorder was a big improvement over viewfinders and pop-out screens.

And lo and behold, when we got it, it worked exactly as we thought and we got some great memories.

But then the lens cap broke. And it started to jam tapes regularly. And put dots and speckles into some recordings. And after 3 months of use my battery wouldn't recharge anymore. I brought it in for a repair and a replacement lens cap/battery, but 9 months later all 3 problems happened again.

The first repair was under warranty, I paid for the 2nd one. But last month was really it. My sister, who lives 400 miles away from me, had twins around the same time our son was born and we went up to visit them for their 2nd birthday. My wife took (or I should say tried to take) an hour of video of me playing with all 3 boys and another 2 hours of video of all of us going to the zoo together. Well, you know what, nothing came out, because THE TAPE WAS JAMMED AGAIN! Only this time, the camcorder did not give me any message warning me of this during her attempted recording, so we thought all was fine.

So today, 2 weeks before our 2nd child is due, I threw in the towel and bought a Samsung DV camcorder. Cest la vie....I have 2 Sharp TV's that work great (one is almost 20 years old!) so I don't know if I simply got a "lemon" or if their camcorder standards are just lax compared to their other electronics.

1-0 out of 5 stars VL-Ah150U
Brand new camcorder has 3 large dots on the screen. Sharp authorized service centers in New York are taking forever to fix it. I am fed up.

AQUOS monitors are characterized by bright, precise picture quality, a sleek design, bright picture, and Sharp's Black TFT technology. The LC-20B2U's high (430 cd/m2) brightness makes it one of the brightest available monitors, so it can be put anywhere--even near windows, doors, or other light sources--and the picture will remain vivid. The 20-inch ASV panel is Sharp's proprietary design. The Black TFT-enhanced screen combines an antiglare treatment with a low-reflection coating to ensure brighter pictures and more vivid colors than conventional LCD displays under similar conditions. The monitor is compatible with NTSC, PAL, and SECAM video formats. A built-in 181-channel tuner lets you plug a cable TV right into the LC-20B2U and start watching, while its stellar 500:1 contrast ratio provides incredible images. Two speakers frame the unit on either side for stereo sound.

The image inverter steps in to flip the image upside-down to hang it in an unconventional manner, and the 170 x 170 degree viewing angles are so wide the monitor can be viewed from anywhere in the room. 4-0 out of 5 stars CATV says "WOW!"
The compact size of this TV allows it to fit comfortably on the top shelf of a bookshelf. The picture is as clear as one can get without investing a whole lot more. When the Time-Warner CATV people have come to the premises, they have given it a "WOW!" rating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look¿s good but poor TV resolution
I bought this TV about five days ago. I was the highest cost unit in the store so I expected video quality at least as good as my old Sony TV. However the picture is fuzzy with high degrees of pixalization. For small graphics the pixalization causes actual "sparkling". After watching the history channel where they place small graphic on the lower right hand corner throughout the program I noticed that I was drawn to the graphic more than the actual show. I am going to get a 4:3 model or wait for the new generation of LCD with 3:2 drop-down and better conversion circuitry.

5-0 out of 5 stars a little too blue
some seans come out too blue but most of the time it is great. when I saw it in the stores it had animations on it not live action so it was harder to tell how good the pict realy was, but very nice pict great for the places you don't have room most tvs.the speaker space for the speakers on the sides is too wide.
The speakers cabnets themselves could have been narrower, the cabnet the speakers are in are twice as wide as the actual speakers.
I wish it was in black, since my purchase I have seen it refurbished in black, but no brand new in black. wish it didn,t cost more than a big screen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars First camcorder
I bought this as my first camcorder a year ago, it is fun and easy to use. With in the first hour I was filming happily with great results. Just hook it up to the TV to watch on big screen and it's easy to record onto a VCR. Although adding sound on it is a little harder. The main problem I expierenced was holding steady at 16xzoom...but it works fine if I hold it against something, a railing or table top etc...Also the LCD screen is not protected and I was worried I'd damage it at first, but a year later and its still working fine after many hours hiking in the woods and riding in the skiff, so I guess it's a pretty hardy viewing screen. Also I bought a 3 hour battery, the batteries need to be completely drained to re-charge and that is a drag but...it's still wonderful and I am very happy with it! A great camcorder for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars great camcorder
I bought this camcorder after the birth of my daughter and I never had a camcorder before. It is very easy to use, the large screen is convinient, quality of picture is great, it has many useful functions. Also it's very easy to transfer to VHS or just to connect the camera to TV/VCR and watch. The only weakness I have found so far is the battery, which runs out very fast, but it is not a problem for me since I use the camcorder mostly at home.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good performer
Before our vacation to Hawaii a few months ago, we were shopping around for a reasonably-priced camcorder to take with us. We decided to buy a Sharp Hi8 camcorder, as a compromise between the high price and good quality afforded by digital camcorders and the more reasonable price but poorer quality of the lower end analog camcorders.

I have to say that we have been generally satisfied with how easily the camcorder sets up and operates and with how relatively free of white lines (snow, static etc. - whatever you want to call it) the videos that we have recorded from this camera have been. Don't get me wrong - we still see static on videos made from our Hi8 camera, just not as much as from a lower-end analog camcorder.

There are some drawbacks that I have noticed in operating this camera. The LCD screen can be quite difficult to see when you are outdoors under intense sunlight conditions (such as at the beach). And of course, if you can't see the screen, you don't know what you're recording. The battery that is provided with the camcorder runs out after about 1 to 1.5 hours of continual use, which limits the camcorder's use.

Overall, we are pretty satisfied with our camcorder given the price we paid. (We got ours refurbished).

5-0 out of 5 stars A great camcorder for a starter!!!!!!
After a lot of questions and reading I decided to go ahead and buy this camcorder. Before getting it I was worried about how complicated it would be to operate since I have never used one. Boy was I worried over nothing!!! The moment I opened the package the only thing to do was charge the battery and start enjoying. A great product, extremely easy to use and very easy to connect to a TV. As soon as the tape finishes I`ll try and record the Hi8 to my VHS for storage. VERY PLEASED!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera
I didn't really need this camera, It's just another toy, but it is fun. Battery life is a little short and I could use a little work w/ steadiness, but other than that this camera is great. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor print quality
Print quality is only fair - blurred text. Forget any kind of small chart or image.

Ribbon is not in a cartridge, making it hard to load.

There is no tray to catch pages.

Main advantage is a small footprint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use!
Yes, this machine has a fax/phone switch. It's a button actually. Maybe some should read the owners manual before posting reviews on a product. Cartridges are about 29-34 dollars for a pk of 2 where I live. And, yeah it will run thru a lot of cartridges, if you use it daily as a copier! I use mine once a week, and mainly for faxes. Never had problems with this machine!!

Amazon.com Product Description

Do it with quality, do it in style. Make the move to widescreen, flat-panel elegance with Sharp's 37-inch, HDTV- and PC-compatible LC-37HV4U Advanced Super View LCD television. Part of Sharp's stylish AQUOS line, the 1,366 x 768-resolution LC-37HV4U offers a 16:9 aspect ratio to match favorite movies and high-definition resolution up to 720p (progressive-scan).

Sharp's flat-panels are a fraction of the width of traditional CRT TVs.
At a mere three inches deep, the set is perfect for wall mounting, though it comes with a table stand for desktop positioning. The set also includes detachable speakers with 10 watts per channel audio power.

Sharp's ASV panel offers exceptionally wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles, so you can watch TV from anywhere in the room.
The Advanced Super View screen offers exceptionally wide (170- by 170-degree) viewing angles and an extraordinary contrast ratio of 800:1 for super-black blacks. Its high brightness (430 cd/m2) ensures wide dynamic range for vivid colors, great depth, and realism. You can place it anywhere--near windows, doors, or other light sources--and its picture will remain vivid. And, with its 60,000-hour lamp life, the backlight life is long enough to give you viewing pleasure for manyyears. A built-in 181-channel tuner lets you plug your cable TV right into the LC-37HV4U and start watching.

AQUOS TVs strive for a high level of energy efficiency.
AQUOS LCD TVs are Energy Star compliant devices, and consume up to 60% less power than CRT systems and about half as much power as comparable plasma TVs.

Being too thin to house its many connections (two high-definition component-video inputs, four each S-video and composite-video, and an XGA-resolution PC input), the LC-37HV4U comes with a stand-alone AVC System--a set-top box that houses all terminals, minimizes clutter, and preserves the panel's austere look. (For greater placement flexibility, Sharp makes an optional 30-foot extension cable for this device.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, Smart purchase.
I looked at almost all the mid sized, flat panel TV's from "High End" places to Best Buy and the Sharpe 37" LCD had the best, most consistent picture. The prices varied from $5500.00 in a retail store to $3700.00 on the Internet. I had several reasons for choosing LCD over Plasma. 1) Plasma displays have considerably bigger pixels (even on smaller screen sizes) than LCD making it harder to watch at close distances. 2) Plasma's have the problem of not being able to re-produce "negative black" (-7.5ire). The result is that even an extremely clean live video feed has a kind of "haze" over the picture that simply can't be adjusted out without compromising sharpness, brightness and color intensity. It's just the electronic nature of Plasma. It's especially annoying when watching HDTV movies or broadcasts where clarity and sharpness are so important. After all that's what your paying for, right? LCD screens however are capable of reproducing negative black quite nicely so consequently don't have the "washed" look of plasmas. Plasmas are fine from a distance of say 15' or more but my viewing distance is only about 9 ft so the choice of the Sharpe 37" LCD was clear in that regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 months and still love it!
I did a bit of research before buying a flat panel tv, and decided to go with LCD because of the reported lifespan (after all, it's still a LOT of cash to put out for the technology)and because LCD doesn't suffer from 'burn-in' like plasma (kids with video games). So, first stop was to Tweeter to see the sets side-by-side. I was completely impressed with the picture quality of the sharp LCD and my opinion has not changed 7 months later. My only complaint is there are not enough HDTV channels. I now find my viewing is almost completely controlled by which broadcasts are in HDTV (I am totally spoiled now). This set is great... now my husband wants them in every room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of the best
This discontinued model was one of the largest LCD TVs when it first came out last year. Now others have surpassed it in size, but Sharp's quality is still the best. The viewing angles are admirable, the colors from DVDs are vibrant and true, and pixelation, although still apparent at times as is with *all* LCD screens (due to liquid crystal response time -- do not believe the "below 16ms" hype from some non-Japanese Asian manufacturers), is quite acceptable. The images displayed on this are just breathtakingly beautiful. Since this model is discontinued, you can find it at bargain prices, or get one of the newer big Aquos LCD monitors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sharp LC-37HV4U
We've had our LC37 for about 2 months now. We are driving it with an HDTV cable box and a Sony progressive scan DVD -player. We looked at nearly every available plasma and LCD HDTV before settling on the Sharp which looked much better in the showroom than any of the plasma sets, even those that cost twice as much. However, after getting the set home and playing with it for a couple of months, while there is no doubt that the LC37 knocks the socks off of every conventional (non-HD) TV that I have every seen, it doesn't seem nearly as perfect as all the other reviews that I have seen.

It does have exceptional brightness, clarity, contrast and color. The on-screen menu set-up user interface is obvious and works well. The set is well-made and easy to use.

I have two major complaints, though. The first is that while still or slowly moving scenes of HDTV are spectacular, there is something funny about motion, especially fast motion. I have heard rumors that this is due to the relatively slow refresh rates of LCD displays, but I am not sure if this is in fact the cause of the problem. All I know is that it is annoying, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little.

The second thing that bugs me is that non-HD TV, and some DVDs (even the best DVDs do not come close to HDTV programming in terms of picture quality) do not look so great, no matter how you adjust the monitor. Sometimes there is a display artifact that resembles what happens on a computer LCD monitor when you set the screen resolution to less than the value that the monitor was designed for. Text and some lines get sort of chalky looking as the display logic tries to interpolate down to the reduced resolution. I see this on my LC37 on some (but not all) regular low-def channels.

It is possible that some or all of these artifacts are caused by the fact that neither my HDTV cable box nor my DVD player connect to the Sharp through the DVI port. Both are using component video inputs. This means that the originallly digital program source is digital to analog converted by each source, then sent to the TV which re-digitizes it. I am curious to know if there is anyone who has this TV and has compared the DVI and component inputs, and if this is the source of the problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dead Pixels Beware
I bought the unit. I had exchange for three times and dead pixels
occur in the same area of the screen. Now they are refusing to exchange it and giving you a crap of within specs. Very defective
product. If you bought one look closely to your screen. I advise not to buy it. The cost is too much to give a "within specifications" crap of dead pixels. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

A multitasking digital camcorder, the Sharp VL-NZ100U features a large 3-inch LCD monitor, 10x optical and 300x digital zoom, and digital image stabilization. You can also shoot digital still images, save them on the included 8 MB memory card, and then transfer them to your PC.

Lens
With an optical zoom magnification of 10x, the VL-NZ100U also has a digital zoom--which works by electronically enhancing the optical image--that can magnify the picture up to 300 times. The digital image stabilization system keeps the picture steady and solid throughout zooms and camera shakes.

Other Features
With its 270-degree variable angle, you can hold the VL-NZ100U in a variety of angles to record over people and objects or for shots close to the ground. You can even record yourself by rotating the view screen 180 degrees.

The built-in speaker allows on-the-spot playback with sound for checking and viewing video footage anywhere. An on-screen recording guide helps you line up landscape footage and can be used as a guide for easy framing of subject matter. The backlight compensation feature corrects exposure in poor lighting conditions.

The VL-NZ100U also features several digital effects (black and white, sepia, NEG) that can be viewed without affecting the original recording.

Digital Stills
The VL-NZ100U can also operate as a digital still camera. Full-motion video is recorded onto a DVC tape while digital stills are stored on the included 8 MB Secure Digital (SD) memory card for easy transfer to a PC.

Inputs and Outputs
The VL-NZ100U comes with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire; Sharp refers to this connection as iLink) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with over 500 lines of horizontal resolution--far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You'll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

The camera features excellent sound quality, recorded in either 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

  • 16-bit audio includes one set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound.
  • 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary into your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers a digital recording time of two full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good value
We've had our Sharp VLNZ100U for about three months now and we love it. The reality is that this camera is a 1/2 megapixel camera whick makes it not the ablosute best quality picture, but for the cost is very good. The camera has plenty of great features including the 10x optical zoom, 300x digital zoom, 16:9 widescreen mode, Digital image stabilization, the 180 degree rotation of the LCD monitor, the still camera (saves to memory card), plus plenty of the other "standard" camcorder features. ... Never a problem w/ the camera, it's worked perfect from the very first time we used it. The real trick after getting the camera is finding good digital video editing software to make your movies. And remember this camera does not come w/ the firewire or a tape, be prepared to buy these when you get your camera.

4-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS REVIEW!!
I have read many comments, all that I could find online actually. For the ...price after the rebate this is a great digital camcorder. What I read online in all user comments are:

1) Sharp doesnt support data transfer to a PC via IEEE1394. It only supports data transfer to other devices via IEEE1394. From what I read it will only work on Windows XP because it will auto detect it. Be sure you install the INF file from the CD so Windows XP knows what it is.
2) Apparently TDK tapes have a film that can ruin or atleast dirty the tape heads. (I use Sony tapes and it is fine)
3) A video capture program is a must for optimal quality of video transferred to your PC.

First I tried Windows Movie Maker (Included with OS). The quality... I tried different modes of capturing. I then used Adobe Premier 6 or 6.5 and I was amazed! It looked great! Were not talking DVD quality here. (Read about MiniDV resolutions and quality online)

To sum up... This is a very cool digital camcorder if you have Windows XP(with an IEEE1394 port), a good digital capture program like Adobe Premier (not Windows movie maker), you dont use TDK MiniDV cassettes and you get the rebate BEFORE it expires! Read the rebate carefully!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great paperweight...
Honestly, if you are buying this item get the extended warranty if available...you could very well need it. I had it for barely a year and it worked great no complaints at all till it just quit working all together. Now it makes a great paperweight. The unit will not power up at all. Bear in mind that my unit has never been mishandled or mistreated. I have also done research on the web and have found similar reviews elsewhere. I am still trying to get Sharp to help me replace or repair it. I'd love to be able to write a retraction in the coming days that Sharp has stepped up and done the right thing. Till then...Stay tuned and best of luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret
This is an awesome product! I don't know why more people don't get them. The reliability, ease of use, combination of features and display area make this a top notch product. I use many DV cameras for my work so I know what I'm talking about here. The price makes this even better! One drawback - no jack for external mike. But the sound its condenser mike picks up is pretty good. I hope Sharp continues to make them!

I love this video camera. My previous video camera wasn't working and I borrowed a friend's Sharp video camera for a wedding I was attending. Loved the ease of use--easy to see for recording, easy to recharge, and easy to set up on the tv to copy to a video tape. 5-0 out of 5 stars this TV is great--and we don't watch much TV!
We got this mainly for it's space-saving features, mostly to keep the TV out of our way. We don't have cable, and were worried the picture would not be so good. It is better than good, it is simply great! (but you do seem to need an external antenna.) I am amazed at how sleek it is!!! Highly recommend.

Amazon.com Product Description

This 32-inch, HDTV- and PC-compatible LCD television is a strong member of Sharp's stylish AQUOS line, and it'll make an even stronger addition to your home theater. The Advanced Super View LC-32G4U is versatile enough to handle wall or table placement, computing or home-entertainment uses. The 1,366 x 768-resolution LC-32G4U offers a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio to match your favorite movies, and high-definition video resolution up to 720p (progressive-scan) when connected to a DTV set-top box/receiver (not included).

The set includes 2 detachable, high-aperture aluminum speakers powered by 10 watts per channel. At less than 3 inches deep without its detachable speakers and a mere 3.5 inches with speakers affixed, the set is as unobtrusive as a big-screen TV can get.

A handy PC Card slot lets you record still images and video on a PC Card and view them on the TV, and Sharp's proprietary Quick Shoot video circuit ensures a lightning-quick response time of less than 16 ms for smooth-as-silk video and gaming graphics.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio).

The LC-32G4U's Advanced Super View/black TFT (thin-film-transistor) screen offers exceptionally wide (170- by 170-degree) viewing angles and an extraordinary contrast ratio of 800:1 for super-black blacks. Its high brightness (450 cd/m2) ensures wide dynamic range for vivid colors, great depth, and realism. You can place it anywhere--near windows, doors, or other light sources--and its picture will remain vivid. And, with its 60,000-hour lamp life, the backlight life is long enough to give you viewing pleasure for many years. A built-in 181-channel, drift-free PLL synthesized tuner lets you plug your TV antenna or cable box right into the LC-32G4U and start watching.

Being too thin to house its many connections, the LC-32G4U comes with a stand-alone AVC System: a set-top box that houses all terminals, minimizes clutter, and preserves the panel's austere look. Connections consist of 2 high-definition component-video inputs, 1 DVI-I (Digital Visual Interface-Integrated) input, 1 HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input, 3 composite-video inputs, and 1 S-video input. An audio/video output (composite- and S-video with stereo analog audio) facilitates hookup with a surround receiver, DVR, VCR, or other destination.

DVI-I is a direct-digital DVI terminal capable of transmitting both analog and digital video data. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV or monitor. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little LCD TV
The Sharp LC-10A3U has a very small screen (10.5 inches) which makes it ideal for desktop or kitchen use. It is also extremely thin and unlike other Aquos TVs it has a small stand that helps save precious desk space.

Image quality is great but be aware that the viewing angles are not as good as the newer, 13- and 15-inch models'. I use the LC-10A3U mostly for cable TV viewing and as a DVD monitor with the audio/video/S-video inputs. The cable tuner is a useful feature but it's when I'm wathcing my DVDs that this TV really amazes me with very sharp, crystal-clear pictures. Mind you, the stereo sound (only available when in A/V mode) is a bit tinny but then again this is a small 10" TV with tiny speakers so what do you expect!

Build quality is excellent, with solid materials and great fit & finish (these TV's are made in Japan). All in all, this is great little TV and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Sharp VL-H860U combines an easy-to-use, uniquedesign with a super-close-up zoom and special effects tocreate a camcorder that's both fun and powerful. Its high- quality Hi-8 format ensures that your videos will be extra sharpand clear. This camcorder is a great choice for family use.

The Sharp VL-H860U's design lets you hold thecamera above your head or facing you while you swivelthe main screen portion toward you. This design is evenmore intuitive than the flip-out LCD screen used in mostcamcorders. The only drawback to this design is that the Sharp VL- H860U doesn't have an additional optical viewfinder. Itwas exceptionally easy to hold and point, however, feeling more like a large, square film camera than a bulky, oblong camcorder--plus it is quite an eye-catcher.

The Sharp VL-H860U's Hi8 format, a better-qualityversion of 8mm film, records clearer, sharper and more colorful videos than those recorded on VHS,VHS-C, or traditional 8mm tapes. Hi8 is the best-qualityvideo you can get short of going digital.

The Sharp VL-H860U has up to 22x optical zoom and awhopping 200x digital zoom--useful for filming sporting eventsand other long-distance views. However, raising the magnification reduces the quality of the image. This camcorder comes with a wide range of exposure and special effects options, including backlight compensation, fade, strobe, and picture effects. It also has digital image stabilization, useful for shaky subjects.

Another feature we liked was the Sharp VL-H860U'ssingle-shot camera ability, which lets you take snapshotsaccompanied by sound. Although this camcorder doesn't have thecomputer-transfer capabilities of a digital camera, it is still fun to take photos on the tape as well as video.

Pros:

  • Unique, easy-to-use design
  • Large 3-inch LCD screen
  • Wide range of exposure and picture effects
  • Still-shot capability
  • High-quality Hi-8mm format

Cons:

  • No optical viewfinder

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice!!!!!
I don't have this exact model; mine's a tad older but with the 4" screen rather than the 3" screen. On the whole, I am extremely pleased with my Sharp camcorder. The unusual design approach that Sharp takes makes it easy to record people naturally, and allows the one doing the recording to make eye contact with those who are being videotaped -- great for recording children!! The features are rich, and the unit offers lots of capabilities - I like fade in/out and digital stabilization. It's easy to hook-up to a VCR for playback (look for VCR's with front panel jacks). The sound and pictures are terrific. So far, after one year of heavy use, no problems at all using my Sharp camcorder. One last thing, the standard battery really does last 2hrs playback, about 45min record time. A good idea: record children's selections on 8mm tape and play them in travel settings, like in an airplane or in a car.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Deal From Amazon.Com
I ordered it from Amazon and it came in 2 days (with 2 day air UPS option). This is a very functional camcorders and well-priced for a Hi-8 unit. It lacks the touch-sensitive screen found on the higher-end Sharp units, using rather small clikc-type buttons across the bottom of the screen. The Electronic Image Stabilization seems to only work welll when you are zoomed in on high-contrast shapes. That enables it to lock in and stabilize the image. Stabilization does not seem to work at all on general scenes lacking these characteristics. Compared with my own Sony, the image sensitivity does not seem as good, even in a normally lit room. Without bright lights on, the colors seem faded and without saturation. A good all around Hi-8 unit for the price, but maybe not for a lot of inside use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice but???
I puchased the Sharp and found it easy to use but disapointing in low light and indoor situations with slow auto focus and color shifting. I finally replaced it with a Sony TRV66 which is quite a bit more expensive but performs much better all round.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality in a hi8 cam-camera.
I just purchased the latest model VL-H875U I absouletly love it. This is the first of its type I have purchased over the old 5 lb quasar VHS format cam camera I have owned since the late 1980s. The ease of learning to use it was simplicity in itself. I would highly recomend it to anyone interested in this type of photography. Hi 8 excells all others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding product and Amazon customer service!
This camcorder is an absolute delight to use. But even more important is Amazon's customer service. The first one I purchased malfunctioned within 15 days of receipt -- after contacting Amazon, they shipped a replacement to me within 3 days!! Not only did I save $$ (Circuit City and the Good Guys were almost $90 more in price) but the excellent service alone is an important selling point. ... Read more
