2-0 out of 5 stars A cheap digital camera in an underwater housing
The Sealife DC300 is really nothing more than a cheap digital camera in an underwater housing. The inner camera is very simple and has almost none of the features you usually find in modern cameras. It offers you to turn digital zoom on/off from the settings menu - unfortunately there is no digital zoom at all. You'd think, since the camera is customized for the housing, you could at least access all the features , but not so. All the housing offers is access to the power button and shutter release. If you want to change any settings, you have to open the housing. If you take out the SD card, the batteries are disconnected which resets most of the settings to default, so you'll have to reconfigure the camera frequently. Sealife DC300 claims to be a "dedicated dive camera" which it is most certainly not. You'd be much better off buying a housing for your existing camera. I ended up returning it to Amazon and went for the Aquapix. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The SeaLife ReefMaster Pro set includes a SeaLife ReefMaster RC camera and an array of accessories developed by divers for divers. The camera offers automatic operations and point-and-shoot ease while handling depths up to 164 feet. The large shutter lever requires only light pressure, even at major depths. The SeaLife ReefMaster RC eliminates the need to focus by using a fixed focus to take pictures from 4 feet to infinity. The SeaLife ReefMaster RC can also take shots on land. It uses standard 35mm film and AA batteries. Other features include a built-in flash--but a more powerful external flash comes with the Pro accessory pack. The external flash is fully automatic and reduces backscatter.

The soft deluxe padded carrying case offers an adjustable shoulder strap and will keep your camera well organized and protected. The kit also includes a SeaLife macro 3x close-up lens/underwater filter, a SeaLife care kit, SeaLife Moisture Muncher antifog desiccant, the SeaLife color booklet Great Pictures Made Easy, and a user's guide for the external flash unit. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars SeaLife ReefMaster PRO Set
Great camera as far as point and shoot goes. Although you can save money buy direct from SeaLife.

2-0 out of 5 stars I just recommended the SeaLife Reefmaster...
....over the Canon Elph. It works at a greater depth. This makes it more versatile at only a slightly higher cost.

However, the "Pro set" is [no bargain]. Just buy the camera instead. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but some problems
The SeaLife ReefMaster RC takes OK pictures but they came out rather blurry and grainy. My guess is that the flash is not strong enough. I went snorkeling with it in La Jolla, CA. It was a bright day with good visibility although never ideal conditions in this area. Perhaps if I was snorkeling in the Florida Keys - which I've done and got good pics with a Fuji one time use underwater camera. I guess in perfect conditions, any camera works well. I've also tried the Sea & Sea MX5-II with no extra external flash. It took better pictures but it looked like water was getting into the housing. The good thing about the Reefmaster RC is that it looks like it stays dry so less worry about that. One further con though is that you cannot turn the camera on/off from the outside of the housing. You must take the internal camera out. To get around this you can leave it always on - it has an automatic shutoff and then you push down the lever a little to activate the camera. Problem is I couldn't tell if the camera was on and took a few pictures of nothing by accident. I was worried the batteries would die as well. Also, the flash ready light is very hard to see. I might try an additional external flash but that means more $$. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Flooded on first use
Despite taking extreme care to ensure o-ring integrity after loading this camera the first time, it flooded on its first dive at 45 feet. I followed the manufacturer's directions exactly, ensured a clean o-ring and mounting, visually inspected the o-ring for stretch, tears, dust, hair, etc. prior to closing, all to no avail. A replacement camera from a no-name brand I purchased from a local dive shop on Bonaire for half the price as a replacement performed flawlessly through six reloads at depths of up to 100 feet. Hugely disappointing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Takes Great Photos and is Easy to Use
I am a novice scuba diver, and completely new to underwater photography, but I do have a lot of land photography experience. I bought a ReefMaster RC camera a few days before going on a recent Caribbean vacation and am very happy that I did. I took it on 3 different dives, a shallow (35') reef dive, a deeper (72') reef dive, and a deep (82') wreck dive (a WWII Soviet Warship!). The camera is very well designed and performed extremely well; even after I dropped it! (It bounced.) It's a breeze to handle underwater, with all the key stuff easily readable and accesible. It's also really easy to use; a couple of times I handed it to my fellow divers (underwater) and they took very good photos without needing to fuss with dials, etc. I shot 3 different rolls of 36 exposures of Kodak ASA 200 Gold film. My first roll (the shallow dive, my first with the camera) yielded 10 photos I put in my album. The second and third rolls (dives 2 & 3) yielded 18 and 15 photos respectively that I judged good enough to show to friends and colleagues (who were blown away by the pics). The 'rejected' photos were due to 'operator error' (as in, I was too close, or too far away, etc.). I highly recommend this camera to people who want to take high quality underwater photos without the expense and hassle of higher-end cameras. If you get the camera, be sure to also get the 3x close-up lens, which really brings out the best in your underwater subjects. And READ THE MANUAL ... I suspect that some of the folks here who complained about the camera didn't take the time to follow the instructions. Have fun!

1-0 out of 5 stars Over priced camera that leaks
Well I bought this camera a few weeks ago to go hawaii. Well it leaked after one roll of film so cleaned it out and let dry over night and loaded it again the next day and leaked again to where the camera didnt work anymore. Well I ended up getting some underwater disposable cameras. When I got the film developed the the disposable pics actually came out better than the 1 roll that came out of my $... camera (imagine that). Well now Im trying to get it repaired or replaced and I have to pay to ship it to them plus another $... I have to send to them for processing, what is up with that if I have a warrenty and its faulty equipment they should cover at the the shipping back to me. Over all There is nothing that I can recomend about this camera from the pics to the service. Would give it a 0 if possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginning underwater camera!
I just purchased this camera and have already used it on 6 dives and found it to work so much better than other disposable cameras and housing for scuba diving. It's not a Nikonos (sp?) but it's still pretty good for a beginner. The only thing I don't like too much is that if you're pretty close to one object but also too far away from another object in the same frame, the flash is only good for within some many feet. Anything further and you can start to see the bluish cast from taking underwater photos around the perimeter of the photo. I also purchased the 3X macro lens to go with it, but found that I had much difficulty keeping this portable lens on without actually using both hands at the same time trying to keep it on the camera while taking a photo. Otherwise a great camera!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter or casual photo set.
I just came back from a trip to Maui and the pictures came out exceptionally good. ...If you plan on being a published photographer, but if you just want great pictures for yourself and family, and don't want to spend another $500.00, I would reccomend this camera. I have been scuba diving for the better part of 25 years and have seen many other cameras that cost more but don't deliver the quality of this one. It takes great pictures in and out of the water.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good beginning camera
I bought this camera for photographing my SCUBA dives. My first experience was that the case leaked and ruined the film on my first dive. There was a flaw in in the o-ring gasket, which the manufacturer remedied by replacing the camera. The second model works well, is easy to handle, has good viewfinder size, and clips easily on my B-C. However, I find that the camera has problems with film advancing, too. The flash color compensation is not the best and could stand some more strength. The pictures I've taken in relatively shallow water come out with a boring color sameness. I would like more contrast. However, for a beginner, this would be the right camera until you get to wanting better underwater exposures. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Do you need the External Flash?
Hello, I have used many different types of cameras through the years of my diving career and have found the cheaper cameras to be very limited in the ability to take good pictures.

No matter what camera you choice, you MUST use an external flash. If you are a certified scuba diver you already know the reason for this. YOU should know, it's part of your training. This flash unit puts out just enough light for the intented purpose of the line of Reefmaster cameras. I would recommend renting a camera system before purchasing; make sure this camera system and flash unit meet your expectations. ... Read more

Underwater photography has some difficulties, which SeaLife's 3x macro lens/underwater filter helps to overcome. The lens coating filters the blue colors so common in underwater environments and enhances the lush red and yellow colors of various aquatic creatures. The filter also reduces backscatter, a phenomenon in which the flash reflects off small particles in the water, creating white dots in the picture. The macro lens snaps on easily to any Sealife camera and also comes with a quick-release snap hook that attaches to the camera body. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont' buy a reefmaster without it!
