Amazon.com Product Description With its four exposure modes: Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Priority AE, Metered Manual, and Programmed AE, you can give this camera as much or as little control over your pictures as you want. You can use the Programmed AE for those shots that you want exposed with no guesswork on your part, while Aperture-Priority AE and the Shutter-Priority AE give you partial control over the shot. Or, for complete control, switch to the manual mode and capture the shot exactly the way you want it. The Pentax ZX-M lets you check the depth-of-field for a given aperture with just the push of a button. This feature ensures that your picture will have the visual effect that you want, before you take the shot. You can even use this feature when the camera is set in automatic mode. The external LCD viewfinder display features the Pentax Natural-Bright-Matte focusing screen, which gives you a sharp, clear image and lets you confirm all of your settings with just a glance. The one downside is that it does not have a built in flash like all other Pentax M series cameras. I did a lot of research into buying this camera and less than the price of the next model up (which does offer a few other non flash related bonus' but nothing major) you could buy a nice interchangable Pentax Flash to go with your camera. Over all this camera is fantastic and I have zero complaints. ... Read more

Firstly my gripes - the viewfinder information is very basic not unlike that of an older manual camera. Exposure is indicated by a plus or minus sign, but there is no shutter speed or aperture figures indicated. These are only shown on the LCD panel, which in dark conditions is difficult to see. Secondly there is no exposure compensation dial, so if you wish to increase or decrease exposure outside of the meter's suggested setting you'll have to take it into manual mode. Thirdly there is no cable-release socket BUT this is not a terrible ommision as you can set the shutter to open after 2 seconds AND the very good news is it locks-up the mirror immediately, then waits two seconds before exposing the film. Metering is two segment, but I am unsure if this is a fancy name for centre-weighted metering. It seems to expose for the darker subject if faced with a contrasting subject & background. No multi-segment metering but it's a very easy metering system to predict! Be very careful with dust with this unit as a small moth has managed to get up above the focusing screen. It is definately constructed mostly of plastic so don't use this camera as a football as you may not like taking photos with a smashed camera. Admittedly the buttons are a little bit cheap-feeling and it's very easy to switch the camera off without realising it due to it's position - but just remember it's Pentax's budget offering.. just because the buttons may not feel terribly solid doesn't mean you can't produce exactly the same photograph than a more expensive camera (in most 'normal' cases). For the price I would recommened this camera to anybody who's familiar with using a manual camera but hates not having autofocus. The focusing isn't the fastest around but I'd much rather save a lot of money now than having my camera focus a few 10th's of a second quicker.

Amazon.com Product Description You have the option of choosing one of four exposure modes: the hands-off programmed AE, the depth-oriented aperture-priority AE, the action-oriented shutter-priority AE, and the totally maneuverable metered manual. The easy-to-use exposure compensation lets you quickly adjust the exposure level within a +/- 3 EV range in 1/2 EV steps for bracketing or for intentional under- or overexposure. No matter the lighting conditions, from difficult backlighting to high-contrast situations, the ZX-M's autoexposure modes are designed to give you high-quality, properly exposed images. With the simple push of a button, the memory lock feature holds your exposure settings for up to 10 seconds, letting you reframe your shot without losing your settings. With a top shutter speed of 1/2000 of a second, this camera gives you crisp, sharply focused images, even if your subject is in motion. This high shutter speed makes the ZX-M ideal for sports and other action photography. The built-in self timer can help you avoid camera shake during slow-shutter and bulb applications, while the 12-second delay gives you plenty of time to get in the shot. The preview button lets you check the depth-of-field for your aperture setting before you shoot. This features ensures that you get the effect you're looking for. You can also take advantage of this function when the aperture ring is set on the "A" (auto) position. The external LCD panel and viewfinder display can give you a range of useful photographic data, including: external flash status, shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, and out-of-exposure coupling range warning, over- and underexposure indication in metered manual. Amazon.com Product Description With six-selectable picture modes: standard program, portrait program, landscape program, close-up program, action program, and night scene program, complicated exposure control is simplified. Mode selection is simple and straightforward; all you do is turn the mode dial to the picture mode that best fits your scene and your picture is properly exposed. To further improve the quality of your images, the ZX-30 also offers two conventional autoexposure modes, aperture-priority AE and shutter-priority AE, as well as metered manual mode and bulb mode. These features give you the creative freedom to expose your images as you want, not according to the preset picture modes. If low-light and/or backlight conditions are detected, the built-in flash pops up and discharges automatically. The flash unit also makes a brief discharge in the dark to assist the camera's AF system. Normally complicated flash techniques, like daylight sync, slow-shutter sync, and bulb sync are simple to use (even when used in combination with a dedicated flash unit), thanks to the ZX-30's advanced TTL flash control system. When using the flash, the red-eye reduction feature helps reduce those unsightly red dots from your subject's eyes. By pressing the memory-lock button, you can store the present exposure value in memory for 20 seconds and recompose the image without changing the value. The exposure compensation feature lets you shift exposure across a range of +/-3, in + 1/2EV increments, giving you the ability to create interesting visual effects. An easy-to-read bar-graph indicator is visible in the viewfinder, so you can see your current compensation value. Multiple exposure allows creative effects such as multiple appearances of the same subject on a single frame. Set your own pace with three drive modes, including single-frame advance, consecutive-frame advance at two frames per second, and a self-timer with a 12-second delay. The fixed molded penta-mirror viewfinder has a natural-bright-matte focusing screen and lets you check on several of your camera's indicators, including: shutter speed, aperture value, exposure compensation, close-up program, action program, and night scene program. You can also check settings on the external LCD, such as: film loading, film advance, film rewind, film loading error, auto pop-up flash function, red-eye reduction flash, and battery exhaustion warning. Amazon.com Product Description The newly developed 16-segment multipattern metering system solves even the most complicated lighting conditions to produce beautifully exposed photographs, frame after frame. Thanks to the advanced SAFOX VIII phase-matching autofocus (AF) system, the *ist assures sharp, crisp focus on the subject, even under poor lighting conditions. Its newly developed 11-point AF sensor constantly monitors 11 different points in the image field and covers a wide area, both vertically and horizontally, to assure optimum focus. The multi-data LCD panel offers a full range of information, with large icons and numbers to supplement the camera's user-friendly operation system. With its natural-bright-matte focusing screen, the *ist offers a sharp, clear viewfinder image even under unfavorable lighting conditions. The LCD viewfinder indicator at the bottom provides a full range of information, including the selected picture mode and exposure compensation factors. Covering a view angle as wide as 28mm, the auto flash automatically pops up and discharges when the camera detects low-light and/or backlight situations. It also retracts to the storage position automatically when the camera's power is turned off. Its red-eye reduction function effectively reduces the annoying red-eye effect in subjects' eyes. One recommendation, upgrade to the Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.7 Lens that Amazon sells for $149.99. It is highly rated and produces excellent photos. The Pentax SMC 50mm/1.7 probably offers the best price/performance ratio of any Pentax lens made and will allow you to tap the full potential of the *ist. (Pentax, Canon, and Nikon tend to sell their consumer SLRs with mediocre zoom lenses to keep the overall cost down, and the quality of the photos produced is average as a result and often disappointing to new SLR owners.) The Pentax SMCP-FA 28-105mm f/4.0-5.6 (IF) Zoom Lens is also a very good lens. ... Read more

It took pretty good pictures, I would say, but I'm not experienced at judging pictures. They were in focus and the exposure times got the balance between light and dark right. The film winding mechanism was a little loud for my taste. On the up side, because of its almost entirely plastic construction (I think the lens mount is plastic as well) the camera was light and easy to carry. On the down side, plastic obviously breaks quicker than metal. The auto-focus was pretty quick and if you understood where to point the lens, it was also correct. At the end of the day, for an amateur SLR that cost around a quarter of a thousand (including lens kit and bag), it's absolutely unacceptable that it should break so quickly. Pentax had better rethink their strategy. ... Read more

I took several photography courses and this camera was leaps and bounds above what I needed. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking into starting up or continuing photography as a hobby.
Operation is pretty simple and does not have much frills to worry about. Excellent value for the price
After several days of looking and comparing options and prices I settled on the pentax camera. I chose it because I suggest to you to do the same thing i did. Just look around everywhere and compare all of the options and special features of the cameras. I also recamend that if you do buy an slr camera you should get a polorizing lens cover or even just a plain lens cover, because it is exremely easy to scratch the lens.

Amazon.com Product Description The TTL (through the lens) phase-matching autofocus system gives you high-quality, crisply focused images, no matter the lighting conditions. You get to choose between one of two autofocus frames--three-point or spot AF--whichever suits your individual preference or needs. The autobracketing is easy-to-use and automatically takes three different exposures: normal, under-, and overexposed of the same scene in 1EV or 1/2 EV steps; using a simple dial control, you can quickly shift exposure across a range of +/- 3EV in 1/2EV steps. This feature works when using flash photography, too. When you want to frame the same scene a little differently, you can simply push the memory lock button and your current settings are memorized for 10 seconds. This lets you recompose your subject without changing all of your settings. If the standard setting just doesn't capture the scene, you can switch to panorama mode at any frame on a roll of film. This is perfect for large group shots or landscapes. In addition, you can also set your own pace with three drive modes: single-frame advance, consecutive-frame advance at two frames per second, and a self-timer with a 12-second delay. With all of these options, it could be easy to forget what your camera's indications and settings are. However, the ZX-5N has a multidata, fixed pentaprism viewfinder and easy-to-read LCD panel so you can keep track of all your information, such as: the exposure frame number, exposure compensation factor, battery exhaustion warning, flash use recommendation, and recharge completion/incompletion. The LCD panel even has an automatic brightness level adjustment, so you can easily check your settings whether it's day or night. Features Reviews (5)

Amazon.com Product Description With a wide, 38mm angle of view, the built-in retractable TTL autoflash is equipped with a predischarge mechanism that helps reduce the red-eye effect in your images. The flash has easy-to-use slow-shutter-speed sync and daylight sync capabilities, as well as a trailing-shutter-curtain sync mode that depicts a more natural image of the illuminated subject if it's on the move. You also have the option of using the discharge compensation function to create the flash effect you want, simply by controlling the amount of light illuminating the subject. Since the metering system is an important part of the exposure system, you have the option of spot metering, center-weighted metering, or the sophisticated eight-segment multipattern metering; the choice of metering type can be changed depending on your preference. When this system works with the advanced exposure compensation (allowing +4 EV in 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments) and autobracketing functions, the PZ-1p allows you to capture your subjects however you want them, even under many different lighting conditions. The PZ-1p's autobracketing system is extremely versatile; it automatically takes three different exposures in succession in the order of normal, under, and overexposed. This feature can be used in both the autoexposure modes and the hyper-manual mode, giving you even more chances for creative expression. When combined with an exposure compensation mechanism, you can also take the three exposures in the overexposure or underexposure side. The multidata LCD viewfinder display is illuminated so you can check your camera's settings day and night. A few of the functions you can verify are: shutter speed, low-illumination warning, exposure compensation, metering system (multipattern, spot, center-weighted), and panorama mode. The external information panel is also illuminated for easy referencing and gives you information on: exposure mode, film loading, film advance/rewind, loading error warning, shutter speed, low-battery warning, exposure frame number, and the self-timer, to name a few. Features Reviews (3)
Not only is the PZ-1p almost error-proof, but it is easy to handle and uses all the K-mount Pentax lenses AF and Manual!!! (Try getting that kind of lens mount flexibility from another brand like Nikon or Minolta ... forget it.) The only way the PZ-1p could be made better is if it came with the gripstrap FDP accessory standard. The camera by itself is a little small in the hands for a professional SLR (a tribute to Pentax technology, but bad for photographers who like cameras to fill their hands). The gripstrap FDP accessory makes the PZ-1p feel like it was made for your hand ... it's a definate must if you use this camera professionally or if you are going to lug it around all day.

Amazon.com Product Description Once you've selected the auto-picture mode, the ZX-7 automatically chooses the autoexposure mode best suited for the scene you want to shoot. This selection is based on the subject's distance, lens focal length, and whether or not the subject is in motion. Once the mode is chosen, the camera "tells" you its decision via the illuminated mode dial and the viewfinder indicator. You can also manually select from the available picture modes, as well as two conventional autoexposure modes (aperture-priority AE and shutter-priority AE), metered manual, and bulb modes. In addition to the hands-off autoexposure mode selection, the ZX-7 has a high-precision, high-speed phase matching autofocus (SAFOX IV) system designed to deliver crisply focused images. The six-segment, multipattern light metering system calculates the optimum exposure, while the three-point wide focus frame enables pinpoint focusing, regardless of the lighting conditions. If your subject is in motion, the predictive autofocus function automatically detects the subject's motion and anticipates the subject's position at the time of shutter release, resulting in perfectly focused photos. When you want to frame the same scene a little differently, you can simply push the memory-lock button and your current settings are memorized for 20 seconds. This lets you recompose your subject without changing all of your settings. If the standard setting just doesn't capture the scene, you can switch to panorama mode at any frame on a roll of film. This is perfect for large group shots or breathtaking landscapes. With an exposure compensation of +/- 3EV in + 1/2EV steps, you can intentionally over- or underexpose your images, depending on the results you want to attain. You can also expose more than two images on a single frame to create multiple exposures. If you want to take three or more exposures on the same frame, simply press the multiple-exposure button after each exposure. For large group shots or to capture a beautiful landscape, simply switch to panorama mode--at any frame on the roll of film. The viewfinder image automatically adjusts to indicate the panorama format so you know what your picture will look like. With all of these options, it could be easy to forget what your camera's indications and settings are. However, the ZX-7 has a multidata LCD panel, with large icons and numbers, as well as an LCD panel with a green illuminator that brightens the panel to make data confirmation easier. The illumination dial clearly indicates which program is selected by the camera, or by you--even in the dark, as the selected mode is also indicated in your viewfinder display. Features Reviews (5)
I am using a Sigma AF 28-200mm F3.5-5.6 DL Aspherical Hyperzoom Macro lens. This zoom is also a satisfying product and gives quite sharp and well balanced results. The photographs have come out well exposed and crisp. The RTF flash is OK for lighted indoors but for outdoors, a TTL external flash is required (I am using a Pentax AF280T). It provides plenty of flexibility when using the various priority modes. For the greenhorns the "auto picture" mode will be very helpful. Pentax accessory - Battery Pack FG will be quite useful for users as one can use cheaper standard "AA" batteries instead of the expensive "LC" batteries. Metal lens mount, multiple exposure, TTL RTF flash, silver finish body etc. are some of the features in this well designed SLR camera. I am very much missing the DOF as my present 28-200mm zoom has a shallow depth of field and it is very difficult to judge the depth of sharpness. My older non-AF Pentax camera (ProgramA) had this capability

Amazon.com Product Description The Auto Picture Mode automatically selects one of five picture modes: landscape, close-up, action, portrait, or standard program. The latter setting is based on your subjects' distance, lens focal length, and movement; the ZX-L then tells you the camera's decision via the illuminated mode dial. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this camera. The quality of the prints is outstanding. The camera itself is easy to use and the automatic settings allow even a novice (to the SLR world) like me to shoot professional-looking prints. My only complaint would be that I noticed in low light (like on an overcast day, or in the shade) the automatic feature won't pop up the flash so the prints end up looking dark. One of my daughters has brown hair and in one picture I took on the porch her hair looked black. Also her face looked grainy and dark. My husband, who knows a lot more about SLR photography than I do, said he thought the camera was metering off the wrong source???? In any case, that is something that a more knowledgeable photographer can work around. I shot some black and white pictures at the Biltmore House, and they look like the work of a professional. This is a great little camera!!!! If not for the darkness issues I had, I would have rated it 5 stars. Pentax makes an excellent quality product and their cameras are built to last.
This camera has an excellent metering system. While you may wonder if a metering system with 35 points is better than Pentax's 6 segment metering, I doubt very seriously that it is. I have gotten accurate metering outdoors, in backlit situations, indoors, low light, etc. The spot metering system also seems to be accurate. This camera has an "auto" mode that turns it into a glorified point & shoot camera. It works fantastically! When I check the f-stop and shutter speed settings I nearly always find them appriopriate for the situations I'm addressing. If you shoot slides have no fear, the ZX-L does not overexpose. For situations in which I want more control, both the shutter priority and aperture priority modes are extremely easy to use. The AF system is great, too. It is not loud (though not as quiet as the Canon USM AF system), but it is reasonably fast and quite accurate. The body supports AF tracking for when a subject is moving. I have found that feature to work well, also. This body has a durable *metal* KAF mount for lenses, which means old Pentax lenses from years gone by will fit. So you might be able to extend your lens collection for this camera by borrowing from friends who have old Pentax lenses they no longer use. For instance, I an old 50mm SMC-A lens from my old P30t with this camera just fine. I find the 28-80 lens to be an adequate general purpose consumer zoom. It is, of course, not as fast optically (f/3.5-5.6) as a high end zoom, but works in most situations. The on camera flash is very convenient, and pops up automatically in most situations where it is needed. I have taken about 15 rolls of print film since getting my camera 1.5 months ago. These include indoor and outdoor pictures, pictures with the on camera flash and a larger flash on the hot shoe. All came out well. Exposure times varied from about 1/500 to 10". I have taken a roll of slides outdoors in bright sunlight with no exposure problems, and at night as long exposure with no exposure problems. ... Read more
