Optics and Resolution
The Stylus Verve features a four-megapixel CCD imager, which can gather enough information to create images approximately as large as 1,714 by 2,286 pixels. In other words, you'll be able to make photo-quality prints of your pictures at sizes up to 11 by 15 inches. The camera's 2x optical zoom lens--equivalent to a 35-70mm lens on a film camera--combines with a 4x digital zoom to simulate the power of an 8x zoom lens, but only at lower resolution settings.

Movie Mode
The Stylus Verve can capture short video clips with sound in the movie mode setting. This feature won't likely persuade anyone to abandon their camcorder, but it is a fun and convenient way to capture movement while you're out taking pictures. Great upgrade to 5 megapixels
I had bought this camera as a replacement for my "old" 2MP Olympus, and I must say that Olympus have done a great job. The pre-set dial on the back makes selecting shooting modes much easier, with choices of Auto-shoot, programmed auto-shoot (where you can create your settings)Manual,movie mode (Quick Time movies with sound)self-portrait, landscape/portrait, sport, night scene,and landscape. The viewfinder (an rarity with point and shoot digital cameras these days), is a little small, but does the job. Great pictures for a camera in this class
I exposed some beautiful pictures with this camera before I bought an SLR camera. Great color and detail for a point and shoot. Obviously, if you want more creative control I would recommend an SLR. But for a point and shoot, it yields good results. One complaint, my camera began to malfunction a while back, rewinding midroll and double exposing--probably my fault, it has been dropped a couple of times ;)

Good buy for the price
For the price this is good buy. I have little kids and I need an inexpensive camera I can throw in my purse for those cute little moments. This camera is small and easy to use. The zoom makes it more versatile than other inexpensive camers. I had no problem loading the camera and the few rolls of film I have gotten back look great.

camera for the dummies
I like this camera. I took it to Ireland with me and we just snapped away. I took the film to a cheap department store to get it processed and the pictures are wonderful. They are clear and persise. If I loose this camera or drop it I won't have a heart attack. It didn't cost that much to begin with. I run though the batteries a little sooner. But this is because I play with the zoom lens a lot. Pleasant surprise
I don't know what the "quality" of this disk is compared to others since it's the only type of disk that my camera will take, but I don't have any complaints about it. Tastes great & it's less filling!
Bought this for the Olympus D390 (2.1 MP). Works great! It holds about 220 pictures at 1200x1600 resolution. That's plenty for almost any length trip.

I went with the Olympus brand because we occasionally use the panoramic feature on the camera, only the Olympus brand supports that particular feature. Otherwise, all xD cards are pretty much equal.

Some please review this camera!
I too have not purchased this camera.Sorry!I also own the Olympus C-4000 and am completely in love with it.I would like to purchase this camera in hopes of it being a tad faster than the C-4000.With two busy boys the C-4000 just can't keep up.I have purchased a Sony DSC-W5, a Kodak DX6440, a Fuji E550 and one more I can't remember and all of them have been returned because none came close to the tremendous pics of the C-4000.This looks like a nice camera and very comparable to the 4000, can someone please review it who owns it.Maybe I will have to buy this one too (can always send it back if my hopes are dashed again).

Like the 2nd reviewer, I haven't yet purchased this camera.I have the Olympus C-4000 from several years ago.Had my husband not broken it, I would still be in love with it.It still takes great pictures even though we have to struggle with the tele-photo lens and with changing the various modes.I'm looking to replace it.I already spent about the same amount of money, last Christmas for a competitor's (Kodak's) camera, that the salesman said was "THE" best.I HATE IT!!!For the price, I was really happy with the C-4000.

I was hoping to find a review about the C-5500 that would encourage me to buy it.I saw an Olympus camera similar to both the C-4000 and the C-5500 at a wedding a few weeks back.The owner (my uncle) was thrilled with it.Unfortunately I didn't get to ask him which model number it was.I'll keep checking back for more or better reviews.

This camera cannot be so bad!!!
I actually do not have this camera, but many reviewers in other sites say that picture quality is "very good" or "excellent"!!! How can it be so bad like "one star" or "the worst camera in the world"? OK, I can imagine that this machine is not perfect, but I am secure that it is a good camera, like all Olympus models before it, specially at this price. May be the person who wrote this doesn't know how take picures at all...
Remember: the most important thing in a good picture is the person behind the camera.

Possibly the world's worst digital camera
This thing is horrible, and I am returning mine tomorrow. Picture quality is absolutely pathetic. I've seen better pictures from camera-phones.

In bright light, with no motion, with everyone holding their breath, you may be able to get an acceptably sharp picture. At any other time forget it. With decreasing light and increasing amounts of motion, picture quality degrades to a featureless blur of colors. I checked, double-checked, and re-checked to make sure that I wasn't missing something obvious (I wasn't).

In addition to this overarching complaint, I have to say that the camera body is flimsy, and feels cheap. Unlike the solid metal you find on, say, a Canon Powershot, this one is plastic. The cover for the battery station is made of the same cheap plastic, and feels as if it could break off after a moderate amount of use.

This is exacerbated by the fact that it takes 4 AA batteries which must be removed for replacement or recharging. Battery life with standard Alkaline batteries was abysmal -- after 20 shots the "check battery" indicator was already flashing.

I never got around to checking the bundled software. After 1 bungled gymnastics meet it was clear that this was not the camera for me.

The preview LCD is very large, sharp, and clear. In fact, pictures look better on it than they do at full size.

Great Zoom and Features
I've had this camera for a few months now and I think it's a good one. At the time I purchased it, it was the only 3.2 Mega Pixel camera with a 10X optical zoom in the price range and the only one that was really portable in size.

The C-740 has plenty of versatility in its features. It allows a wide range of control and it can be a little intimidating trying to figure it all out. The optical zoom is absolutely amazing and having a glass lens rather than plastic is a real plus.

The one area where I am a bit dissapointed with the Olympus C-740 is in low light sensitivity. I've used an old Sony Mavica at work and with that camera I am able to take clear, crisp pictures without a flash - even in extremely low light conditions. Unfortunately, this is not true of the Olympus C-740. Even when there is relatively good lighting levels the C-740 requires a very steady hand or tripod to get a clear picture without a flash.

Overall, I think it's a good camera, especially if you are looking for high optical zoom in a compact size.

10x optical zoom, 3MP resolution at a good price
the ultra-zoom c-740 camera is a virtual twin of the c-750 with some notable differences. the biggest differences are a lower resolution (3MP vs 4MP), no hot shoe, no sound recording support, and no remote control support. finally, the c-740 has a body constructed from a mix of metal and plastic while the c-750 has an all metal body.

pros:
- 10x optical zoom - this is the main selling point of this camera (make sure you get a tripod or monopod to hold the camera steady at 10x, though).
- 3MP resolution.
- good image quality.
- allows a great deal of manual control, including the ability to fine-tune white balance.
- support for add-on lenses.
- customizable buttons and menus.
- ability to store four sets of individual settings.
- bright 1.5" LCD display (smaller size than competition, though).
- has an electronic view finder allows you to see what the CCD sees.

the c-740, like the c-750, is very easy to use and can be used as a point and shoot or as a full manual camera. the noisier than expected images at higher ISO settings, the lack of an AF assist light, and the lack of an accessory shoe are areas for improvement. all in all, a solid camera at a good price. if you have the $$ to spend, i would recommend trading up to the c-750 and get the extra 1MP resolution and hot shoe.

I love this camera
I went to a 4th of July celebration where I took 319 pictures. Only 5 of them were bad pictures (probably user mistake). I have taken some awesome fireworks picture. The 10X optical zoom really helps get in close on subjects. The only MINOR complaints that I have are:

1) It's not a fast click between pictures with AutoFocus.
2) Camera settings are reset each time by default.
3) When changing the quality to Super High Quality, the picture gets darker.

All in all, I am very happy with this purchase.

An inexpensive, but Powerful camera
I just bought this camera a week ago and I am surprised at how easy it was to learn! I've already have taken a panoramic shot, and it came out great! The only 2 weak parts in the whole package is 1- it doesn't come with rechargeable batteries and a charger, 2- the software it comes with is very basic. But all in all, I looked around and this is the best bang for the buck at the 10x optical zoom.

C-740 and C-750 are Not as described in Manual
I have used an Olympus C-3000 for several years and like it. I then purchased a C-740 because of the 10X optical zoom, but quickly learned that it does not function according to the the instruction manual. I actually downloaded the manual first to check the capabilities before I bought one. For one thing you cannot access the top level menu in the "P" (Program) mode without separately turning on the monitor. This is a serious drain on the batteries while you adjust your settings. Another problem is that when the REC VIEW function is on (the default) the camera is supposed to flash the picture just taken on the monitor while the picture is being written to memory. This feature also does not work. The only way to view the last picture taken is to double click the monitor button. Then pushing the monitor button again turns the monitor off or you can press the shutter button half-way down to turn the monitor off. Of course, you can also use the review function to see all pictures on the memory media. I also was not impressed by the digital viewfinder as opposed to an optical viewfinder. A friend of mine has a C-750 which is identical to the C-740 except that the 750 is a 4 mp machine. Her C-750 had the same problems, but she didn't seem to mind because she is not technically oriented. She runs her camera in the Auto mode all the time. I, however, did mind these drawbacks because these are two important features, so I sent my back. ... Read more

Looks Cool, but thats about it
Ok, I bought this MP3 player because of its amazing looks, but the touch screen is uber sensitive, so you have to keep the hold switch on all the time, which makes switching tracks or adjusting the volume a three step process (1-turn off hold, 2-switchtrack/volume, 3- turn hold back on)The screen scratches easily as well and after about a day, it looks like you've owned it for a year.A remote is an add on accessory, but costs $50.And the sound output is terrible. I just couldnt get this thing lound enough, I always had it on max and it was just never enough.Could have used about a 25% increase in volume.And thats not even the worst of it.Mine broke at least 4 times in two weeks... The screen would flash fatal system error, and just freeze.So I downloaded the patches off of olymups online that were supposed to solve the issues, and 1 week later, i was getting the same errors.Tech support said it would need to be sent out for repair, so i just said forget it and got my money back.The worst part of all though was the music interface software...Complicated, bulky, slow, aggravating and archaic.Does not Support drag & drop which makes adding that 1 track you just downloaded a real pain in the but.If your looking for an Ipod alternative, this is not it. ... Great photo quality!!
I was worried about spending 500.00 for a printer, which I knew nothing about, but after reading reviews on Google.com I felt comfortable about doing it. The quality comes out great. Point and shoot or take charge--your choice
Before buying this camera I seriously considered the Sony DSCV1. My daughter has the Sony DSCP10, and it seemed a good idea to share accessories. However, research made me decide that the Sony had serious problems--short battery use in the camera (with a battery that sometimes wouldn't hold too many recharges) and a viewscreen that sometimes conked out the minute the warranty (90 days for this part) was up.

I chose the Olympus C5060 because the lens is approximately equivalent to the Sony DSCV1 and most of the other high-end lenses out there for this type of camera. Not as bright as the renowned C5050, but respectable. I've used Olympus 35mm cameras, (and a very early digital) and I personally have liked them very much--they just feel right in my hands. This particular model has a mostly-metal (lightweight magnesium) body, which feels quite sturdy.

Good stuff:

1. Batteries are the same as for the digital SLR camera--good for a lot of shots (about 400-600 in "normal" conditions) between charges.

2. You can personalize nearly all camera settings, from power-up to viewing, to shooting, to power-down. "My Mode" allows you to save special photo settings that you use frequently--flip to it, and everything is the way you like it. Manual, AP and SP modes, too. And the P setting allows point-and-shoot no-brain photography.

3. While too chubby to be pocket-sized, the camera is compact and lightweight.

4. Dual slots for media storage--Olympus proprietary and generic CF. You can switch between them and use them both.

5. Quick shutter response time--almost like a film camera!

6. LCD viewscreen turns in against the camera back when not in use--nice protection feature.

Bad stuff:

1. Long charge time (6 hours--i.e. overnight) for that long-life battery. I can live with it... A second battery runs about $100.00, by the way. This is a heavy-duty item!

2. Lens tube is plastic--probably identical in construction to all C series cameras. (There's a metal rim so that plastic isn't exposed when the camera is closed--except for the lens cap.)

3. No 5050 lens, alas... Will we ever see 1.8 again?

All in all, I'm glad I got this camera instead of my original choice.

Proprietary batteries a bad choice
Most disappointed with the choice that Olympus made to go with proprietary batteries in most of their new C series digital cameras. Love their cameras and matter of fact have bought three C-5050 zooms this year for myself and family. However, there is nothing worse than having the batteries go dead on you and there is no way to recharge the batteries. With the C5050 Zoom camera it comes with rechargeable AA batteries , but in a pinch if they run down you can always use any AA battery at your local 7-11 store. One of my biggest bragging points and reasons for buying Olympus has been their choice not to use proprietary batteries, but now I am sad to say I have bought my last Olympus unless they rethink this. I know the proprietary batteries that comes with the C-5060 Zoom has a tiny bit more power and you can get a few more shots than with the rechargeable AA batteries that comes with the C-5050 Zoom, but Olympus did not do this for that very small gain. Olympus was thinking profits and only profits and they know this camera is almost worthless with one battery. They know most people will have to purchase a second "extremely over prices" proprietary battery and that means big bucks. Sometimes I just don't get corporate America. I understanding wanting more profits, but they need to calculate in how many customers they will lose doing it.

Great!
PROS: Great Images Can be obtained from this camera. Color & the like.Batt. life has been great even with a full night of flash use. Almost every command has a shortcut or a button on the cameramaking it a blast to use. Support for 3 types of Memory CF, XD, Or MD (Hint: 340MB MDs DO work in this ca) Wide array of add ons. Works great MACs with OSX and above. Iphoto will read the camera like a dream. With the dual slots for cards/MD you can switch on the fly between the two and that means you can have loads of memory! PhotoShop CS support for the RAW format. No plugin needed! The camera is not lite but not going to make your arm fall off. That's what I love about it. It feels like a camera and not a toy (EX. Cannons EOS digi) CONS:Save your money and get a good TTL flash for this camera and/or the bracket with a HS link cable. The flash on the camera is not in the worst place but I have found red eye and other flash points to be a bit of a trouble.Get more lens sets. You do have to buy a tube to make them work but it's not all that big of a deal. They also make aftermarket lens sets in a vast range of sizes. (Big Deal you have to buy lens sets and items for film cameras to0.) Also it will take a while for you to learn everything about the camera because the manual is not very well. In short I love my 5060 and have loads of great photos! My friend bought bought the finepix and it stoped working after 2 months! Mine is going strong without a problem!

Charger problem solved
Just for information to the people who bought the c 5060 recently like I did and reported the problem with the charger's blinking red light when first charged out of the box. I had the same problem but went ahead and fully charged the battery overnight despite the instructions saying to call customer support. The battery was fully charged in the morning, the indicator light was green, and have not had a problem since. What happened I think is the battery came from the supplier uncharged so the first time it is charged it takes a long time (I left it overnight probably 10 hours) and red indicator light is blinking.

Another DOA
Just like the other reviewer from Texas, out-of-the-box the battery/charger have a problem. I'm sure this is a good camera if I ever get to use it.
The charger flashes red after about 2 minutes of charging. The instructions say to immediately call Olympus support. Which I did and after about 15 minutes on hold, I'm told I can either return the camera or mail in the charger and battery. I'm mailing the charger/battery - so I'm guessing I'm out of a camera for a couple of weeks.
When two people take the time to report the same problem within 2 months, I think Olympus has a serious problem with a supplier. ... Read more

great camera, great buy!
Batteries: 1)Yes, the D560 can go through batteries, but as others have said, buy some NIMHs, always carry a spare charged set, and you won't have a problem. Lithiums are a nice idea, but they're expensive. 2)Use the viewfinder, not the LCD. ALL digitals will drain batteries much more quickly with the LCD on. Besides, when you're outside in bright light, it's hard to see the LCD screen at all.

Quality: I was astounded at the quality of pictures I get with this camera. Color is wonderful and clarity is great. I've never had a fuzzy picture - indoors or out, low light or bright. Not so with my SLR. I love the immediate feedback - if you don't like it, retake it. Of course, that doesn't work well with spontaneous photos of people, but I don't think I have any less success with my digital than I did with my SLR. At least with the digital I know what I got right away, and can try again.

Ease of use: Accustomed to a bulky SLR, I didn't think I'd like using such a small camera, but once I got used to it, I love it. The 560 is lightweight and fits easily in a pocket. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I couldn't do that with my SLR. As a result, I take way more pictures than I used to. I just wish Olympus provided a slipcase with it to protect the LCD screen. I ended up buying a sunglass case to protect it from things like pens and nail clippers in my purse.

I bought the D560 a year ago to replace our broken 35mm point and shoot back up camera. My main camera was a Minolta SLR. Since I loved my SLR, I leaned toward buying a Minolta digital, but after some reasearch and a lot of reviews, I decided on the Olympus D-550. When I went to buy it, I found that I could get it's replacement, the 560 for the same price, so I decided to go for it. The only time I've been disappointed with the D-560 is when I dropped it and broke the lens... and that was my fault. As to my SLR, I finished out the roll of film that was on it, and it's been in my closet ever since. I've been thinking about giving it away because I don't see myself ever using it enough to make it worth keeping.

As for my broken D560, Olympus said that the standard charge for repair and servicing is $135. They will let me know if it is more than that and I can decide whether to have them repair it or not. I fear it will turn out to be "not economical to repair" but I think that if I have to replace it, I'll buy another D560. I'm so happy with it, I don't want to risk disappointment with something that turns out not to perform as well.

Quick lecture: Digital cameras and battery types.
Maybe it's because I design small electronic devices that I seem to have a better understanding of this issue of the D-560/C-350 and battery life than others. Digital cameras including this one with LCD monitor screens put savage power demands on their batteries. The basic chemistry and construction of alkaline batteries means that they are not able to efficiently deliver power at this very high rate. They just get hot and their voltage drops very quickly, making the camera shut down in a matter of minutes.

Olympus have been amazingly short-sighted in supplying a pair of alkaline batteries with the D-560. It's giving users the very mistaken idea that it's designed to use this battery type, when it *isn't*. The manual on the CD-ROM more or less spells it out that alkaline batteries are only to be used as a last resort. OK?

Rechargeable Ni-MH and non-rechargeable lithium batteries (CR-V3) have a completely different chemistry. They *are* capable of efficiently delivering the kind of power this camera (and other digital ones) demand, to give a very useful operating time.

I've been using 2,000mAH PowerBase Ni-MH batteries in mine, and getting more than 150 photos before one set is discharged. I think that this is perfectly reasonable. The supplied 16MB XD card can only hold about 80 1024x768 pictures after all.

The bottom line is this: if you are going to buy this or a similar digital camera, be prepared to buy some Ni-MH batteries and a charger or pay a lot for CR-V3 lithium batteries for as long as you own it. Olympus should make this fact crystal clear in their owner's manual, but they don't.

Yes, the D-560 obviously does have a design fault. It will often give the Low Battery warning even on batteries which have just been charged. However mine doesn't stop working, and the flashing red symbol disappears after a while. If you can live with this glitch and are prepared to buy Ni-MH batteries and a charger (or CR-V3 batteries), this is one incredibly good digital camera I fully recommend.

Good camera
Takes very good quality photos, but the batteries run out after a day of use. It also freezes up quite a bit-i.e. you can't close the front bc the lense will not retract.

Love it!
Small, cute and easy to use. I love the MACRO. Have taken more than 20,000 photos with it and it's great. Only drawback is battery consumption - eats up AAs and spits them out.

Good camera for easy P&R
I bought this one after much research when my Fuji A210 was lost. As other previous reviewers have said, it takes great outdoor pictures as long as I choose the right white balance for the lighting. Pictures are sharp and color is saturated. As for the indoor pictures, the objects need to be within the flash range. If they are within 10 ft, the camera takes great pictures. But as soon as the objects are beyond 10 ft or so, the pictures become bad (very blurry and dark).
As for the batteries, I experienced no problem as long as I used 2000 MAh NiMH batteries. One thing I did notice was that when I took many shots in short time frame, the low batter warning showed up even though the batteries were relatively fully charged. But instead of replacing the batteries, I let them "recuperate" for about 10 seconds. After that, the full battery meter returned and I could take many more pics.
It does have a long shutter lag. But if you focus first (let the green light come on) and shoot, you can compensate for it.
This camera does not have many features like Canon A70 (such as aperture priority, shutter priority, and video with sound) does. But it does have 4 scene modes and 4 white balances. It's a good entry-level 3MP digital camera for people who just want clear pictures. ... Read more

Prosumer quality at consumer prices
I am very impressed with the high quality of pictures the camera produces. It captures great detail and the photos look very good in print 5x7 as well as on the screen.

Great Camera
This is a great camera with a lot of features at a very reasonable price. The camera is very easy to use, has great battery life (I took 75 pictures over a week w/ flash on one charge), and produces excellent pictures. I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about with the colors. Maybe they should learn how to operate the camera or get their vision checked? The color looks perfect...better than a high quality film camera. The software that comes with the camera is adequate. My only concern before buying the c-5000 was with the xD memory format, which I had never used before. It has worked better than I had hoped. The camera writes to the card very quickly and the camera is able to hold over 200 images at the highest resolution on the extra 256mb card I purchased. Overall a great buy.

Terrific little camera
The picture quality of this camera is something to behold. I read of people saying the camera gives noisy pictures and all but they're probably using their camera with the settings at default. Set the sharpness to -2 and the aliasing and sharpening artifacts just disappear! You end up with rich and highly detailed pictures worthy of the 5MP tag. The colour that this camera gives is simply beautiful.

I have found the FL-20 flash to be a very good match as well. This small unit balances nicely with this camera and lends a lot more oomph to strobe lighting needs.

Yes, it's not a perfect camera: no low light focus beam (though the camera still focuses quite well in lowish light situations - you can also just switch to manual focus if you need and just guesstimate distance to subject); no histogram (I don't use it much anyway) and no sound with movies. But the goodies especially the picture quality outweighs the bads: Li-ion battery (very good battery life), good usable ISO range from 50, 80 ,160 (320 is as expectedly noisy), lightweight and small size, good manual exposure range (A/S), etc.

If you're after very high picture quality, pictures that have great detail (without that almost over smooth "Canon look") and colour, this is a terrific option for the money.

I bought this camera about 2 months ago and as far as I'm concerned it's a great little camera. I don't understand some of the other comments that give it a low rating. But in my experience I've taken my camera on field trips, weddings you name it and the pictures came out great. The quality of the pictures are excellent indoors and outdoors. Far Exceeds My Expectations
Bought this camera to replace one I had actually worn out! I run a lot of film through a camera in a year. This point and shoot camera gave me sharp pictures with good color on 400ASA film, indoors with flash. The flash was effective to 17 feet away. I put 200 ASA film in and shot pictures both indoors and out. Results were more than satisfactory. I plan to take this camera to Italy with me instead of my SLR. The zoom is smooth, and the image in the viewfinder is very close to actual picture. I love it! Worth every penny!

Olympus Zoom 170
I have owned quite a few cameras in my life, and feel this is one of the best I have come across. The zoom is excellent, and so far, only two rolls of film used, I have had zero failures. The buttons are a little bit small, and I just need to get used to that, the zoom is easy to use. The feel of the camera is good, despite its small size, it fits well in the hand. The point and shoot era is here, and all the years of my using a Nikon 35mm slr seem to be over. This is just too simple and easy. To go back to the changing lenses, carrying all the baggage, etc hardly seems worth the effort if the end result is as good or better.

Great Camera with excellent zoom
This is simply a great camera. I have used it for over 2 years. I bought it at buy.com when it was newly released. We bought it primarily for the zoom. The zoom is simply excellent. This is one of the best point and shoot i have used. I have used Canon and Minolta before. The controls are all conveniontly placed and the zoom works great. I have never missed a picture.

Best in its class.
Simple point and shoot. Awsome zoom. Pictures are consistenly sharp and clear. I'd recommend it, specially for travel when a digital camera just doesn't have enough memory to hold so many pics.

Great camera - my 2nd Stylus
Love it! I had my first Olympus Stylus for YEARS. After dropping my first camera way too many times (over many many years), I finally had to replace it. I was sticking with the Olympus Stylus. Like the first one, this camera also takes great pictures - especially close up people-pictures. I always use 200 film and get great results every time. Call me lucky. Excellent all-around printer
I bought this for my wife to supplement our P-400 (8x10). We went digital almost 3 years ago with the Olympus C4040 and P-400 and I was looking for something to do 4x6s w/o having to cut 8x10s down all the time. I've always been partial to Olympus, having worked extensively with the OM-1 as a photographer in the early 90s. We were very happy with the results we received from the P-400 and I have to say the prints from the P-10 are stunning, if not better. The cost per print is about 39¢, which is a bit more than taking it to some of the local pharmacies (though we live in the middle of nowhere, we'd more than make up for it in time and gas). Plus there's something to be said for the convenience of printing at home. Print time is reasonable, what you'd expect from a dye sub. The greatest benefit to me is that you don't get the diffusion dot patterns you find with the ink-jet "photo" printers. If you want "photos", dye sub is the only way to go -- and the bottom line is the P-10 gives the quality I want at a reasonable price.

Great little printer!!
I've had this printer for a couple months now and would recommend it highly for anyone with occasional, low volume printing needs. The prints are indistinguishable from lab prints when printing high resolution shots and have a high quality gloss finish. Because it's a dye-sub printer, there's no pixelation as with many dot-matrix printers. Set-up and use is easy. In fact, I keep mine disconnected and stowed most of the time. It only takes 1 minute to plug it in and connect it. My only complaints are that there's no integrated imaging software to simplify printing (I use Powerpoint with good results) and the paper and dye-sub pack are a bit expensive (equates to 65 cents per print if you order the 4x6 kit for 100 prints). But if you only need a few good prints on an occasional basis, this printer is tops.

Cost per print
I searched around and found the least expensive place to purchase cartridges for my Olympus P10. I bought enough for 200 4x6 prints.The price per 4x6 turned out to be app. 42 cents per print. I can go down to my local Walgeens and get prints for 29 cents. I'm not certain about quality yet, but at 42 cents, one has to be careful, or the whole thing can cease being fun.

WARNING: Not Macintosh compatible
You have to read the fine print on the Olympus web site very carefully to discover that this printer is not compatible with the Macintosh OS. According to their Technical Support, there are no plans to develop a driver for the Mac.

I am able to use mine as a PictBridge printer, printing directly from the camera. Its prints are fair to good, but not excellent. But since I cannot print my stored images from my computer, I will sell the P-10 and buy something else, and it probably will not be manufactured by Olympus.

Olympus P-10 first impressions
Today I got to play with an Olympus P-10 printer I just received. It comes with a starter pack of ribbon and paper good for 5 4x6 pictures.

The printer uses Dye-Sublimation technology. It prints Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and a special overcoat layer that makes prints fade resistant. You can connect the printer to your PC with a USB cable, or, if your camera supports PictBridge technology, you can connect the camera to the printer directly, and print without PC.

There are two paper sizes supported by the printer 4" x 6" and 3.5" x 5". You have to buy special paper, which comes with ribbon. What I like the most about this printer, is that it produces borderless pictures without the need to tear off perforation or anything like that. When it spits out a picture it's just like from your local drug store - glossy, and ready to use. Or, if you prefer, you can specify to print the images with white border.

The printer is very easy to use, fast, and looks superb. I welcome the fact that it doesn't require any nozzle cleaning, head adjusting, or much preparation at all.

But now is the most important question. How good can it print? I run through the supplied pack very quickly, printing 5 pictures from my collection. Two of the pictures I printed before, using Epson Stylus Photo 820 Printer, Epson Inks, and Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper. The ink-jet clearly had an advantage rendering light tones, seeing as it was a 6-color printer. The Olympus, unfortunately, really struggles with rendering light blue. The lighter shades of sky don't look all well to me. Another area where I wouldn't mind to see improvement is shadow detail. Perhaps we are ready for 6 or 7 color Dye-Sub printers, 3 colors may be not adequate.

Off course just 5 pictures is not enough to get familiar with the printer, I am sure, as I gain experience with it and learn to play with settings, I should be able to foresee difficult to print areas of images, and perhaps correct them in order to get better prints.

Overall the printer produces very nice results. And I can see that it will be much easier to maintain and use than an ink-jet. ... Read more
