3-0 out of 5 stars Yes and No
It is good for general landscapes when there is very little light. But it does not have the power to easily illuminate small animals. Great for camping trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for police/security surveillance
I use this for security surveillance when I watch my clients property at night and it works very well. You also have the option to purchase a camera adapter (on other web sites) which will allow you to take pictures which has been very usefull. When the police department I work for purchases new night vision equipment I will be reccomending they look at the Night Owl line of products.

3-0 out of 5 stars poor optic
Well, I can see things in even total darkness, but with lot of image distorsion. Very poor lens optic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing power and clarity.
At night I'm able to view animals at great distances in the field behind my house. Even past 100 yds I'm able to see if a deer is a buck or doe. The infared is like shining an invisiable flashlight on something and it works best if turned on within about 30 yds or inclosed space. It's has solid construction, clear picture, and is a fun to mess around with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Night Vision Dream

Amazon.com Review

I have been looking for an affordable night vision scope for years, and I believe I have found it in the aptly named Night Owl Explorer. The well-thought-out design and powerful optics make this scope a pure pleasure to use. Since finding it, I have spent many nights standing on my back porch exploring with my eyes the area around my home.

With the Night Owl, you will see an image as if you just looked through a regular optical device, except the image will appear in a monochrome green color.
This little gem literally turns night into day: There is not an area in my yard that is not visible to me, even on the darkest of nights. It works like a powerful spotlight, directing a very bright beam visible only through the lens.

The Night Owl fit my hand perfectly, and the deep blue rubber outer coating made for a nice look and feel, while also weatherproofing the unit. The handy strap held it tight to my palm, placing both the Power and the Illuminator buttons directly under my fingers for easy control. The care taken with the Night Owl extends to the smallest of details, including power management: Simply setting it down turns the power off so you will never accidently run the batteries down. --Dave Cole

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck.
I've only had this thing for 2 weeks but am quite impressed with it. the constuction, size and performace are what you would hope for at this price level.

I'd recommend it to boat owners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This thing delivers exactly what it promises: it enables one to see in darkness! Within a city you will hardly find a spot dark enough to fully appreciate the scope, but in the country side at night this thing is incredible. The built-in infrared light source allows one to see in pitch black. The image is monochrome (greenish) and is distorted towards the edges, sort of like if you are looking through a bubble. Even so, the effective viewing angle is wide enough for comfortable viewing. Also, I was quite impressed with quality of the optics: if you adjust the eye-piece to your eye, the focus ring allows to get a very sharp image from just a few feet to infinity! I found a minor defect, however: The battery lid appeared to not provide a good contact to the battery, so I had to tweak the lid slightly for the power to come on. The construction of the body and the objective's assembly, however, seemed smooth and very sturdy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A good house or backyard Toy
I bought this with the hope of using it for wildlife observations while out in the field. I had previous experience with night vision and hoped for a clear view of the surrounding meadows, forests, etc. Not so with this one. I could not see any better than using my own eyes. It works when there is still some light or moonlight but, I can see fine on my own then. I returned it after one use.

It works ok in the house or your local backyard, as it will pick up the street lights etc and make everything bright. Forget it if you intend to use it in the wilderness.

The technology has definately improved in this area but for a good product it appears I will have to spend more money. I'll eat carrots for now. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Entry Level Scope
Solid feeling unit. Battery compartment could be designed better. Buttons for power and IR are mounted in a silly spot, so using them takes two hands. Use of double AAs makes a lot of sense and they seem to last.
These units work well in most conditions. Getting proper focus takes a bit of time, but I found that I could focus closer than specs indicated, from about 4 feet to infinity. On the water on a dark night in Long Island I was able to see boats and moorings. There is some image distortion at the edges and a bit of "dirt" in the view, but overall the Night Owl will impress, especially at the price. Note the IR illuminator is not invisible to others. Red dot is visible! These things are great for sailing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Night Vision
Compact size and quality! Like the other users on this page, I was surprised by the power of this unit. Totally worth the the price , which was very reasonable ....Night vision feature, plus
built in IR feature present an excellent value. And it's powered
by 2 AA batteries.
A+

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I bought this for my husband. We waited until dark and then tried it out. He stood outside about 10 feet from me and I looked at him through the scope. I could make out a bright figure in his shape but could not see any features. Peripheral objects had slightly better clarity. I'll wait until the technology gets better for the home consumer and buy again. This one is going back.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is more than what I expected. It really works great.
Usually I very dissapointed when buying equipment that is inexpensive and promises everything. This unit really does allow you to see in complete darkness. You can see pretty good without the infrared on and then when you turn it on, it's like using a flashlight (you can see everything). I agree with other reviews that this item does not have a good manual. However, it is easy to use. You should know that you can't use this in daylight or it can ruin it. My friends and I were impressed with it for as little as I spent on it. ....

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Effective Nightvision. Two thumbs up!!
I just received and used this Night Owl nightvision model "NOCX3".This product worked GREAT.I had 3/4 of a moon.Location was a wooded lake area 1:30am.I could see clearly at least 300 ft away.Standard green monochrome view.I messed with the IR a little but really didn't need it.The IR was just like turning on a mag light, effective 100 ft.I was able to turn on the unit and shut off a minute later for approx 20 minutes of sustained usage.Saves battery juice.Limitation, field of view was like looking through a paper towel roll.Small, but you could see everything. This is a great low cost Russian nightvision product.--ks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice product
I had to return mine since it had a big splotch in the phosphor screen that was distracting. Amazon couldn't replace it as they had run out of stock. From the little use I put it through, it worked well. I use an IR-scope at work that cost close to a $1000, but this Russian beauty is comparable to that in quality costing only a fraction of that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Night Owl Explorer 3.1
I found the Night Owl Explorer 3.1 to be ok, thats all. The price isn't bad for what you get and it's very hard to pick out a "good" night vision unit in this price range. The one thing I don't like about it is it needs the IR light on it to work if it's completly dark out, which is ok, but the IR light is so bright that someone could spot you sitting in the dark because of it. It has a 1/2" diameter red light on top of the unit which at night is very bright if there is nothing else out there. This would not be a good unit for surveillance work. The unit only has a 15,000 light gain in it, some have up to 35,000 and would most likely be a better choice, if the claim is true. All in all it's ok for just screwing around with though. I also got the 5X lens adapt. for it, it works pretty good but does rob even more light. If you want a real good unit get one with a 2nd or even 3rd gen. tube, they are much better than any of these 1st gen. cheapies.....

3-0 out of 5 stars Think twice
If you really are going to invest in a night vision scope, you may as well go with a more expensive model. For what it's worth, the Explorer is sufficient, but the infared light to see in darkness is quite annoying. The manual focus can be a hassle as well. This device is excellent- almost four stars- but if you are going to spend the money, you may as well do it right.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was sceptical at first...but when i got it, it was great!
Right when i got my nightvision device it was at 9:00 AM. I was mad, night time was a long ways away. So i went down into my basement. I closed the door and turned on my nightvision. There was a little bit of light coming threw the door cracks. I could see everything. And in the dark corners i would just push on the IR LED light (infrared light). I love this thing. I had a cyclops compact before, it was ok, it wasnt weather resistant. So i just went with the Exlorer. The Explorer has a rubberized case so if it where wet you would have a better grip, and it is more water resistant. I think whoever is deciding what kind of night vision they should get either the explorer or the 100% water proof ones. I like my night vision device alot. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Night Scope
I bought this scope out of curiosity rather than any pratical need. This scope works well as advertised. However, be aware that this scope is the type that needs a little bit of light or Infrared light and it magnifies the light many times and display the image on a green scope. It cannot see in total drakness, and it does not detect infrared radiation emitted by body heat or other sources (That type cost over a thousand dollars).

Living in the city, I have not found many uses for this device yet. But I imagine that it would be great for camping or other outdoor night time activities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for consumer use
I own the Night Owl Cyclops Pro now for almost 2 month. It is excellent. As it is "only" a Generation 1 night vision device, here some remarks on that: Gen 1 devices like the Cyclops Pro have some distortion, but this really isn't a big thing. You hardly notice it. The gain is not high enough for very low light conditions. But this only means that you have to switch on the IR LED illuminator. If you are a general trying to equip your troops, this might be a problem as you are visible for other people using a night vision device. For the rest of us it does't matter whether you are invisible or not. So good Gen 1 devices are more than adequate for consumer use. The build in illuminator is only fair. For around 60 dollars I bought a russian made external IR LED illuminator. It has an optical systems with a real lens so you can focus the IR light beam much narrower. This increases the viewing range in extrem low light conditions dramatically. With this addition I am very pleased with the performance. I doubt that I have to upgrade to a Gen II device once they become cheaper. The ususal disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Night Owl Optics or any manufacturer or seller of accessories in any way. I am just a user.

4-0 out of 5 stars I am Sam Fischer
If only they had the cool green glow of the three dots. These look a lot like the goggle that Sam Fischer uses in the Xbox game "Splinter Cell", which is also very good btw.

They work very well and will last you a long time. While a bit pricey, they're worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Impressive but uncomfortable
At 2 lbs in weight and mounted on the front of your face, you have to strap the goggles on pretty tight so that they don't hang down. This makes them uncomfortable to wear for any length of time. It would be preferable if they were mounted on a rigid head piece like a bike helmet with a counter weight at the back for balance.

As for night vision capability, they are very impressive and very sensitive, but beware of using them anywhere there are artifical lights, you might end up causing permanent damage to them. Definitely best used in complete darkness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome goggles
These goggles are probably the coolest things I've ever touched. It's not complicated at all. Just flip it over your eyes and you can see everything at night time as though it was broad daylight. It was a little on the pricy side but it was definitely worth it.
