4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool when you're bored.
I'm pretty sure I picked mine up at a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club Store but anyway, I paid $80 bucks for it. It came with both the drum sticks and the AC adapter. Not bad I guessed. It's fun to pass a bit of time on or when you get bored or you want to practice your "skills", but don't want to make too much noise. I feel that the pads are a bit too small to strike. I'll find myself striking the side plastic. Maybe it's just me. I also feel that the sunds of the striking on the system overpower the actual drum sounds. It's good to have an amp. I don't. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars WARNING about the picure
The picture displayed with the CASIO CTK 558 appears to be the more expensive WK1600. The CTKs are fine entry level keyboars with 66 keys. The WKs are a little more expensive and have a wider (72+ key) keyboard. Don't get fooled by the picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars CTK-558 - great keyboard!
This is a wonderful keyboard with a great sound and ease-of-use. However, if I had to purchase it today, I'd go for either CTK-551 or Casio LK-30 learning system. I think the pitch bend wheel and touch response which are extras on CTK-558 may not be that important to beginners. However, the follow-me light system in LK-30 might be worth it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent sound, terrible support, useless for many purposes
I am a bassist, guitarist, and vocalist working on my own project.

I did not have the money to throw into a Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, or Yamaha board. All I needed a keyboard/synth for was drum sounds and some keyboard/synth fill in. At first, this seemed like the model for me..

The touch sensitivity is nice.. most of the sounds are pretty decent, if not you can make all sorts of adjustments to just about anything for any tone... except the 'raindrops' tone, a common favorite on most keyboards/synths.. the raindrops tone for the Casio is a cheesy video game sound effect.

Otherwise, the sound and sound possibilities were surprisingly decent.

That is where the good review ends. 6 songs is not a lot of storage if you actually plan to compose with this thing.. no floppy. However you can save songs to your comp, and load songs from your comp to the keyboard.. if you have a good laptop and want to take it everywhere the keyboard goes, then this is not as much of a concern.

Don't buy it if you plan to use it with Cakewalk.. Casio does not provide the .ins (instrument definitions) file for it, and the manual is useless for creating your own. It works terribly with Cakewalk (and I would imagine other MIDI devices) for this reason.

If you just want to play, and never record anything, then this is the instrument for you, otherwise, go for something a bit more expensive. Do not go Casio though.. At present there are little to no .ins files for Casio boards anywhere on the web.

Also, it is certainly not an instrument to take on the road, partly for the limited storage, partly for its innability to interact with other MIDI devices to the extent it could and should be able to, and partly because it is very lightweight and flimsy, don't sneeze in its direction..

.. Look at the price, ask yourself if you can wait a while longer and buy something that is even just a little bit more expensive.. such as a Yamaha for a hundred or two more.

If you think it will help you on your home project... not unless you want to record and flatten to analog from track to track, or program everything into the keyboard and record analog.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's "MUST-HAVE" keyboard!
My daughter tried this keyboard out at the store. It has been on her "MUST-HAVE" list since that day. When I was young I had a Baby-Grand piano vs this Casio LK50. I think it is great to have a lighted-teacher keyboard instead of going for hourly lessons weekly. I explored the internet doing homework, this is a great buy. I know she will have many enjoyable hours learning to play. A "MUST-HAVE" for me to get this keyboard for her!

4-0 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me! No AC adapter!
Why on God's green earth in this digital age any company would ship an item like this without an AC adapter when they come standard with $10 items is beyond me, but sure enough, it doesn't include one. To top it off, it doesn't even tell you what kind to buy - it tells you to get some obscure coding that the guy at Radio Shack had never even heard of.

Outside of that, which really warrants a rating of 1 star, it is really really cool! My fiance loved it! Definitely a lot of value for the price. Looks like she'll have endless hours of fun with this thing, and it teaches you! Amazing! Lighted keys? Will the madness never end?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!!
This does exactly what it says it will do, has great sound, easy to set up and get started, lots of tones and other options. Overall great product but let me add a few things I wished were different.

More rhythms

Keyboard does not save last tone when you turn it off ( you may be able to do this but I have yet to figure it out)

Many of the songs included are lame

Casio includes a service where you can download more songs but they have like 50 songs there and it seems like a web site that they may have forgotten about since many of the "coming soon" dates are from 2000 and 2001. Also, you cant download the songs directly to your keyboard they remain on your PC.

If these features are not important to you then this is a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
In my mid-30's I decided it was time to finally learn to play an instrument - and the Casio LK55 fit the bill (my husband requested I pick an instrument that could be used with headphones!).
The keyboard has realistic sounding instruments, and a pleasant piano sound. Keys are full sized, and the lcd display is very useful once you figure out what the general functions are.
It has a good range of built in songs that you can play along with - I found as a beginner that most were too complicated but I'm working on it.
I've actually found that I don't use the key lighting as much as expected. Don't expect this keyboard to 'teach' you how to play. You really need to purchase some good instructional materials and learn the old fashioned way (lots of practice!) but it is fun and gratifying to play along with the built in songs in-between regular practice. My only complaint is that if you want to learn a built in song using the key lighting - you can't learn both hands at the same time. You learn the right and left hands seperately - which I can understand as the lighting might be confusing otherwise, but it would be nice to have the option.
I'm extremely pleased with the keyboard, but it will take a while before I'm competent.
I highly recommend the book "Adult All-In-One Course: Lesson-Theory-Technic" by Willard A. Palmer. It's been extremely useful for learning the basics (such as How To Read Music!).

Pluses:
1. Portable (can use batteries or power)
2. Key lighting is great
3. Large selection of built in songs
4. Full size keys
5. Can connect to computer

Minuses:
1. Can't magically transform me into a concert pianist
2. Headphone jack is at the rear of the keyboard & is awkward to access
3. Can't learn both hands simultaneously

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product, but beginners will Need help to configure
This is actually a great beginner keyboard. The tutorial system is good, and the sounds are good. However, for beginners(like me), you will need some direction getting you PC to communicate the MIDI files to your keyboard. Unfortunately, the 800 number will support this product using the same manual in the box. If you write to Casio, it will take a week to two weeks to get the information I can provide you. So here it is for those who need it:
1.) The casio MIDI cables must be connected in opposite order, meaning the output-end of the cable goes into the input receiver of your keyboard. The input-end of the cable goes into the output receiver of your keyboard. Its counterintuitive, but this is the only way it will work.
2.) You must configure your sound-card by going into \'Control Panel'\'Sounds and Audio Devices'. Choose the 'Audio Devices' tab. You will find one of the boxes reads 'MIDI music playback'. Make the default device 'MPU-401' by choosing it from the drop-down menu. Hit 'Apply' then 'OK'.
3.) The MIDI software refered to as not supported in the user manual and by the 800 number is simply MS Media Player or Real 1 Player. Simply open an MIDI file with your keyboard onwith the keyboard set to GM mode 'on'. Some or all of the song will play through the keyboard speakers. The Navigation channel on the keyboard will allow you to pick-up different ranges the MIDI file is playing.

I hope someone finds this helpful. Once I got it up and running, I learned the tune from 'Cheers' in a matter of two hours with very limited exposure to piano playing. It is a very good investment for those who are musically inclined but do not want to go through paying for lessons! I highly recommend it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable keyboard
Decided to purchase a keyboard and it was between Yamaha and Casio. Although the Yamaha looked and played well, the Casio with it's lighted keys was the final selling point.

Overall experience has been outstanding, it is a very cool machine with nice features. The learning steps programmed into the machine are nice, you can follow along and learn as you go. I read music fairly well, so it's fun to watch the lighted keys, the LCD display, and the sheet music at the same time.

The learning program is nice as you can practice the song until you are satisfied with your progress. In addition, you can set the program to play on it's own and fill in background chords and extra notes that fit your style and interests, or have the program fill in the back ground chords while you play the score. I was surprised how fun that is, you can modify your music to fit your tastes and have fun with it, like having your own band.

Another feature that is nice is the built-in metronome. I always hated those things as a kid, but every built in song starts with a few drum beats at the correct timing, it is very useful.

For $... bucks, this machine can't be beat for fun and to help playing skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars if you're looking for some quiet practice, this is it
i am a 16 piano lover, and i am lucky enough to own a beautiful piano. yet, that piano happens to be in the center of the house, much to my family's dislike. As i said, i love piano, and tend to practice a lot. This keyboard was perfect for those times when my dad had a headache, or my mom was trying to watch tv, of my sister was sleeping. The sound is beautiful, it's easy to use, and the headphones i bought in addition are wonderful. this keyboard has many additional aspects to it, although i haven't quiet figured them out...lol. the ones i use are the recording, where you can even store songs you've recorded (great for finding your trouble spots and wrong notes in pieces), and i also use the metronome. Also, it's a lot of fun to play around with the different sounds you can use, there's some really great ones. The display is very clear and displays the intrument largely.
BUY THIS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Keyboard
This keyboard is phenomenal for the money!
I recently bought a Yamaha DGX-202, (a comparable unit), returned it then bought the Casio.
Casio blows the doors off the Yamaha.
The sound is phenomenal. (Much better than the Yamaha's)
The fuctionality is excellent.
The styling is beautiful.
And for the street price ($...) it's an incredible deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate for Bros with a Low Cash Flow
This is a surprisingly [inexpensive] piece of equipment for the kind of power it contains. With 232 tones, (32 which you can create yourself) some excellent demo songs to showcase it's power, and over 100 rythms (20 which you can create yourself) this is a powerful piano impersonator. I've things like this that were basically ... batteries. Expensive, bulky, meek, weak etc., you get the idea. This masterful musician's amigo is only 200 something dollars and is EXTREMELY poweful. To get the best out of this equipment, get the computer Music starter pack (or some kinda name like that) from cakewalk to create bigger, easier to compose songs. I'm only 14 and I can make I own music easily with this dynamic digitizer. You won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Casio WK1630 Keyboard or Yamaha PSR-GX76AD
My wife and I debated on which 76-Note keyboard to buy: Casio WK-1630 or Yamaha PSR-GX76AD. The price range for both products is very close.

At the beginning, we kind of lean on the Yamaha for the following reasons:
-Yamaha GX76 has 5 songs, 6 tracks memory while Casio WK1630 only has 2 songs, 6 tracks memory.
-Yamaha has one hundred built-in songs while Casio has twenty something songs.
-Yamaha has education book come with it while Casio has none.
-Yamaha has four local stores in town for services while Casio has none.

After testing both products in several stores, we finally settled for the Casio WK1630 for the following reasons: Casio WK1630 has a better volume control and the sound quality seems to be a little better than the Yamaha GX76. Since my wife is not a beginner, she doesn't care about the education book. She only cares the quality of the music and the audible level of the music. She wants loud PoP music. Yamaha can't produce loud enough music even we turned the volume to the max. We tried the volume features on several stores to make the comparison. The conclusion is Casio produces music louder at the max volume with acceptable sound quality while Yahama couldn't produce loud music at the max volume. That help us made up our mind.

So if you are a beginner and don't care about the loudness of the music, Yamaha seems to be better.
If you are not a beginner and want a loud PoP music, you may consider the Casio WK1630. ... Read more
