3-0 out of 5 stars Cheaply made, but you have no choice
There aren't many "basic" cameras out there for "artsy" photos. This one is not high tech at all, instead its made of plastic and has a plastic lens and manual feed. The color filters make it interesting but I question if it is worth the $70. Fun though, and being a part of the LoMo revolution is cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars very fun camera!
I got this for Christmas and have used it several times. The results have been terrific! With some experimentation, I learned that the red filter is very strong so I use it less than the others, but it has been great for taking pictures at parties and concerts and clubs and bars. Rock and roll photos! I lost my little packet of filters, and the wonderful people at lomo international sent me two replacement packs for free! Customer service is great. I do not like the skin bag, however. It is inconvenient and gets in the way. After having it block the lens on a roll of film, I just ditched it altogether. Otherwise, I recommend this camera fully.

5-0 out of 5 stars color me beautiful
this is the most fabulous invention ever. i had been experimenting quite a bit with colorgels, but to find this put together in a camera is simply fantastique! thanks to the lomo people, thanks, thanks, thanks,
in addition to the colorflash this camera also has different exposure settings, very simple and working really great.
enjoy and splash your world in colors, there are no limits anymore, it is all up to you and what color you want your world and surrounding to be!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Lurrrve It!
This camera brought joy to all my friends. It's a whoel new world of photography. It's fun and it looks cool too.Whenever i take it out of my bag and started shooting, strangers will start looking at me and my colorsplash, it's a totally unique camera with colored flash. Overall the camera itself is cool, but i do wish they came out with other colors rather than white. The camera came with a very cool box and manuals.

The only complain i have is the cover for the camera, it's seperated in 3 parts where u sort of have to help your camera "put some clothes on". It's quite hectic at times when u just wanna get hold of ur camera and just start shooting.

Apart from all the cameras i have, digital/film , this one's the most artistic of all.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far only one complaint.
So far, I like this camera. The only shortcoming I see is that there isn't a place in the bottom of the camera in which you can mount it on a tripod. That would come very useful in low light situations when you're trying to achieve certain effects. ... Read more

Get basic and go postmodern at the same time with Lomographic's Holga 120 with built-in flash. This Holga starter kit includes Mes Vacances Avec Holga photo book by Fred Lebain, 1 roll of medium format film, 2 AA batteries, multilingual instructions, poster, and 1 roll of non-residue opaque tape.

Unabashedly low-tech and ideal for beginning photographers, all the operations are completely manual, including the focus, aperture, shutter, and film transport controls. Yet the camera produces an abstract, soft-focus picture that even seasoned photographers find unique. Double exposures, streaming colors, warped vignetting, and unpredictable light leaks are all possible with this camera.

It also has a built-in flash (requires two AA batteries, which are included) to bring about even more photographic possibilities.

The camera uses 120 color or black-and-white film. Rough it out with this affordable camera and reap the rewards of distinctly daring photography. Just don't forget to remove the lens cap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars more $$$ for more content
yes, the single holga cameras can be found cheaper.
but with this starter kit you get the best photo book of holga photography, a roll of medium format film, the flash version of the holga camera, batteries, black tape to play with the lightleaks and most of all the best tips on how to use and work with the camera. if you are on a tight budget, yes you can find the bare camera cheaper, if you want to get content, explanation and a hell of a lot of inspiring pictures, this package is a really good price value. it is also the perfect gift for your best friend to finally get started on that medium film photography....

2-0 out of 5 stars Junk or Art?
I've taught photography for a while, and although the Holga is fun, there are better and CHEAPER cameras out there. First off, if you want to buy this as your main camera, look for something else. Holgas are NOT for photographers who demand consistency. Many students buy these to get "cool" effects that look artsy. Although I think it's noble to look for a low tech camera in this age of digital perfection, you can do better and be more creative with other cameras. For the cult photographer seeking good old fashioned Dark Room Magic you should try the following before plunking down real money for something as sketchy as a Holga:
Get Eric Renner's excellent book on pinhole photography.
Build a simple pinhole camera out of something you have around the house. Chances are it will make images better and cooler that the Holga.
Seek out a local Photo Swap meet and buy an old roll film camera in working condition. Get one with a German lens, if possible.
Not only will you learn about "Retro" photography from the old timers, you'll get a real camera. I've gotten roll film folders with german lenses for 5 bucks!
Hit a local resale shop and see what kind of cheap cameras they have.
Ask a family member if they have any old cameras lying around.

For what you pay for a Holga, which will probably break in 6 months, you can buy 3 real cameras that give equally atisitc effects. Oh, and shoot in black & white!

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth the price?
I got this camera for my wife for her birthday and she couldn't wait to use it. She took it out of the box and stared in dismay at the yards of black tape, the cheap plastic casing, the pages of directions (including one that said to cram a piece of cardboard into the body of the camera to keep the film from slipping). While I really like the idea of Lomo offering a bunch of odd, hip, unique cameras to the photo-taking public, the Holga just kind of seems like a piece of junk. Granted, the packaging is cool and all and we haven't yet gotten the photos back from development. Time will tell if this is a 4-star camera that needs a little patience or a 2-star camera that is overpriced and over-praised.

1-0 out of 5 stars WAY OVER PRICED !
Holga's are great cameras, but if you look around on the net or at a photo store you can find these plastic cameras for twenty to twenty five bones. The price for this "Lomographic" Holga Starter Kit is way over priced....sure the packaging is a little nicer, but come on! Don't get suckered into this. Look around a little and you'll save big.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite toys
i first heard about holgas about a year ago. i'm a photo student and really like unusual cameras. i ended up ordering a woca which is made by the same company and is basically the same camera but with a glass lens instead of the plastic lens on the holga. i like my woca so much that i'm thinking about ordering a holga as well. i've heard that sometimes the plastic lens distorts the image in interesting ways, something that the glass on the woca doesn't do as much. the glass lens actually is quite crisp when the focusing is just right, did you hear that you have to guess on the focusing? thats part of the fun though. either way these cameras are fantastic and both yield interesting results. but if you like perfection and consistancy in you photos don't get one of these, no wait, get one of these. it will change you for the better. and by the way, get one with a flash, these flashes are brighter than the sun. they are fun for flashing your friends and disorienting them for a good thirty seconds. (if you are a kid reading this, only flash your friends when your parents aren't around or you will probably loose your holga) plus the flash is essential if you are going to use this camera indoors, otherwise you will get thin negatives. enjoy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Freaky Fun
This is a cool addition to your camera bag, it is a cooky cool way to create "Art"! 8 little shots, you'll need to pay for the largest size prints allowed by your budget though to get the full 8 piccie effect, on each frame. As with all Lomo effect cameras the colours are skewed, the pictures are not bitingly sharp (getting a high res 35mm film helps though), and the effects are very much hit and miss, but the hits are superbly bizarre. Once you see the effect you'll be hooked, it is really a basic wind, point and click, hear the classic "whirrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzclick" sound and you are done! It works best with a moving subject, crowd scenes, pets, kids, etc.... I took some shots at a hippy market in Totnes, UK and the results were great! Really odd and strangely unwordly. I took some straight shots with a Nikon D70 too and although these were interesting, the Lomo brought out the spaced outedness of the scenes, the colours and movement are pure Lomo. I love itand so will you too, for this price it is worth the gamble! Pop one in your pocket and whenever you come across a scene with bright colours, movement, shifting patterns the Lomo 8 lens camera will come into it's own. Shoot low to avoid 8 pictures of the sky and the tops of people's heads. Keep the wrist strap away from the front too. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Lomographic SuperSampler blue camera is a truly original and exciting addition to the world of Lomography. Something of an improvement over the ActionSampler and CyberSampler 2.0, the SuperSampler uses a unique pull-cord film advance mechanism and incorporates four lenses in a panoramic format to capture four shots per frame, each just a fraction of a second apart. The end result is four long images stacked on top of each other that show the sequence of motion. This gives you something akin to panoramic "movie stills" that can even be scanned and animated into a mini four-frame movie on your computer. (Click on the "See more pictures" link at the top of this page to see sample photos that were taken with the SuperSampler.)

Brought to you by the same Lomographic Society folks who introduced the free world to the famed Lomo Kompakt Automat camera, the SuperSampler shares the original Lomo's wacky, creative image--as evidenced in the colorful, photo-filled booklet that comes with the camera. The SuperSampler is also a study in styling with its unique pull-string design and ice blue color. It doesn't have a flash and sports only a small removable square to frame your photos. "Shoot from the hip" is the driving philosophy behind the Lomographic Society.

Everything with this camera is manual, including film loading, winding, and rewinding. The lens is fixed focus. However, the SuperSampler does offer two speeds--standard and high speed (four photos in 2 seconds in standard mode; four photos in 0.2 seconds in high-speed mode). And, although this multiple-image format works best for action shots, it can turn any subject into a creative, interesting slice of life.

Since there is no built-in flash; the best results occur under bright lighting conditions. It comes with a six-month warranty--Lomo will replace the camera free of charge if anything goes wrong with it during that time period. Included in the box are the camera, a SuperSampler booklet, and one roll of 24-exposure ASA 200 35mm film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique, fun camera
No one should order this camera hoping that they will receive a professional quality item. It is simply made to be fun, and that is what it is. It is made of plastic, and it is fragile...so I will warn you. Nonetheless, it is, as I have said, tons of fun. Naturally, since it has no flash, you have to take the pictures with plenty of light. Also, every picture you get developed isn't going to be of professional quality, but that is part of the fun--you just dont know what you are going to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars get more action!
This little camera is a very simple and straightforward device of instant fun - it's fun to use, people are always asking you questions about it, it doesn't weigh much so you can take it anywhere and best of all: your pictures are always surprising!

Don't expect it to take ordinary pictures, don't demand every photograph to be perfect. To get the best idea of what this camera is all about, visit the manufacturer's website because they have minisites for each of their products).

I got one of these supersamplers a few months back. Yes, you do need lots of light. Yes, you should take care not to pull the cord too hard (if it feels like it's jammed, you're probably just out of film).

You should also make sure to catch (people in) action or create actions yourself. Step closer to your subject while shooting the picture, have someone twist around for you, turn your wrist so the camera itself turns around while shooting, ... experiment!!

And that's the fun! Your interaction with others, their reactinos when they see the pictures, and just the tiny movement of pressing that button...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I got the camera, opened it, loaded the film, took 3 photos, and the pull cord almost broke (like I read about in a previous review), so be VERY careful with the cord. So I took 20 photos on the 24 exposure roll of film, and the cord would pull no more, so I figured "whatever", and rolled the film and took them in to get them developed, of all 20 photos, one of them turned out, the rest are all almost pitch black. I don't really see any point for anyone to buy this camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love my lomo!
This camera is a lot of fun. The one thing is you do need the 800 ASA, otherwise pictures are too dark.
This camera is all about being suprised at what you get, just point it arround, move it and shake it.

By the way, mine was soak in water, and I lost the current film, but then it dried and it's working perfectly. So it's ok to take it sailing : )

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Idea....
I bought one of these last year, after reading so much about lomo and having previously bought an "action sampler" (Lomo's other 4 lens camera) I payed my money and eargely waited every day for it in the post and to be honest this was a great dissapointment. I got through one film, which turned out OK before the Winding on cord broke. This makes this camera pretty much unusable to me. Another annoying aspect is the whole light thing going on with this. You can only use this in BRIGHT light. Other wise the pictures are about as crappy as disposable camera. Living in the UK this also makes this camera pretty useless for 9 months of the year. Disspite this its a very cool idea and is a lot of fun! But in the end thats all it is really, and overly priced. Maybe if I had got it cheaper and it hadnt have broke so quickly and easily i would have rated this more.
However I rang up the Lomographic society about it and they offered to ship me out a replacment so perhaps that one will fair better. Just remember these things before you spend your cash on this.
A:Make Sure you live in a SUNNY country
B:Make sure to take care when pulling the cord and loading the film
C:Try and get it as cheap as you can
If you ignore these, dont be suprised if your dissapointed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Laughs just for taking it out of the box
Never in my life do I recall taking an item out of the box and receiving such a swell of laughter. Every time I bring this plasitc camera out, manually switch on the flash, manually advance the film and of course, forget to remove the lens cover (manually), my guests laugh enough that they don't have to say cheese. As of yet, I have never taken a picture that shows my subjects in their entirity. I havent even gotten used to what I have to do to get a picture that doesn't draw yet more laughter. I know that you can not be close to your subject if you even want to see their whole face.
I didn't expect this to be a digital quality, sharing the moments type of camera and it is a good thing. My guests and I do share the same feeling that it is a fun camera just preparing the camera for use. Quality -- NO * Fun -- OK * Amusing -- Yes

3-0 out of 5 stars Why?
My imagination must be broken and I have asked several people so theirs must be broken, too. Why would anyone want a camera that takes 9 images of exactly the same thing? If you want 9 prints, just have 9 prints made. If you have a digital camera, as I do, just print 9 copies on the same piece of photo paper. Please feel free to educate me as I am totally baffled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken
I opened the package to find a cheaply-made camera. All my disposable cameras look better than this. I can't comment on the picture quality because the camera would not advance the film - the advance wheel is stuck, and the button to free the wheel is stuck also. A piece of junk I'm returning it back to Amazon today.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN!!!
This camera has got to be the funnest thing I've ever owned! You get four photos per frame, so basically there are four 2"x3" images per 4"x6" photo. The photo quality is awesome - nice, crisp and full of color. Plus, this it is super easy to use and load.

It's fun to keep the photos intact and look at the variations per image, but I've started cutting the photos and using them in craft projects - collages, greeting cards, etc. And they are perfect wallet size! The possibilities are endless.

Buy one and enjoy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and Cheerful
I agree with the other reviewer who said this was a cheap little plastic camera. It is, but the photos were great quality, crisp, clear images and vivid color; just as good as you'd get with a "regular" camera. Immediately, I started taking all kinds of artsy-fartsy pictures, wondering how they'd look once they were developed. My pictures came out almost looking like postcards. I got the best results taking close-up shots of things. I'd also reccomend taking pictures of neon signs. I did the Radio City marquee. Very cool.

I only give this product 4 stars, because I dropped it on the ground, and it half opened up. None of the film was compromised, and the AA battery they sent with the camera was dead. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Action Sampler takes a great idea and turns it into a fun little camera. This camera uses four lenses to capture four different photos on one frame of film. The Action Sampler takes the photos a fraction of a second apart, creating an "action sample" that shows the sequence of motion. (Click on the "More Pictures" link at the top of this page to see sample photos that were taken with the Action Sampler.)

Brought to you by the same folks who produce the famous Lomo camera, the Action Sampler shares the Lomo's wacky, creative image--as evidenced in the glossy, photo-filled little manual that comes with the camera and is a work of art in itself. The Action Sampler is also a study in styling with its colorful, plastic see-through case. It doesn't have a flash and sports only a flip-up square of pink plastic to frame your photos. Everything is manual, including film loading, winding, and rewinding, and there are no settings to fiddle with.

As the manual blithely states, "The Action Sampler is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in hand-crafted modern materials. It's made of plastic." In short, this means you shouldn't expect sharp, detailed pictures. However, you can expect truly unique, fun, and often striking sequences of photos. The Action Sampler uses normal 35mm film but needs plenty of light (outdoor photos turn out the best), so if you want to use it indoors, we recommend using a higher-speed film (ISO 400 or higher).

The Action Sampler is a blast to use, and it makes a great gift. While it has its limitations, its distinctive way of seeing the world is fun and exciting. --Holly Blumenthal

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
I've had this camera for a few years, and it's great fun. The editorial review is accurate- don't expect great pictures, but almost any subject can become strangely compelling when captured by this camera. My own favourite photos came from a nighttime visit to a carnival- the pics were surreal!

I've found that being within 3-8 feet of the subject is best, and use film that's rated to your light conditions. The big secret to successful photos is to move the camera strongly while you are taking the picture (or have your subject moving). The resulting photos are all slightly different, off centre and skewed.

The more you experiment, the more fun you'll have. Just remember to warn your developer that these photos are going to come out a little 'differently' than usual! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Lomographic CyberSampler 2.0 Milk camera uses four separate lenses to capture four unique photos of each scene on one frame of film. The CyberSampler 2.0 takes the photos a fraction of a second apart, creating an "action sample" that shows the sequence of motion. This gives you something akin to movie stills that can even be set on your computer to flash like a mini-movie. (Click on the More Pictures link at the top of this page to see sample photos that were taken with the CyberSampler.)

Brought to you by the same Lomographic Society folks who introduced the free world to the famed Lomo Kompakt Automat camera, the CyberSampler shares the original Lomo's wacky, creative image--as evidenced in the glossy, photo-filled booklet that comes with the camera and is a work of art in itself. The CyberSampler is also a study in styling with its off-white, milk-colored case. It doesn't have a flash and sports only a flip-up square to frame your photos. "Shoot from the hip," is the driving philosophy behind the Lomographic Society. Everything with this camera is manual, including film loading, winding, and rewinding, and there are no settings to fiddle with.

Make no mistake, as the booklet blithely states, "the [CyberSampler] is not a finely tuned piece of apparatus made only of the finest in handcrafted modern materials. It's made of plastic." In short, this means you shouldn't expect sharp, detailed pictures. However, you can expect truly unique, fun, and often striking sequences of photos. The CyberSampler uses any 35mm film but needs plenty of light (outdoor photos turn out the best), so if you want to use it indoors, we recommend using a high-speed film (ISO 400 or higher).

The CyberSampler is a blast to use, and it makes a great gift. While it has plenty of limitations, its distinctive way of seeing the world is fun and offbeat. 3-0 out of 5 stars This is gonna be cool when I finally make it work.
This camera could be incredible -- take action shots via a special four-shutter system. Fun, easy, right? Well, all that is true in theory. Unfortunately, this camera is so cheaply constructed that I haven't figured out for sure.

When you heft the camera you'll know what I mean. The whole camera weighs next to nothing. Almost all the parts, internal and external, are made of low-grade, paper-thin plastic -- don't drop it! Mechanically it seems very suspect already. I've had my CyberSampler for only a couple of months and already it's eaten 2 rolls of film.

However, I'm still excited about the Lomo and I feel that if I could get it to work consistently I'd be willing to bump my rating up to a 4.

i got my first actionsampler from my brother stefan, 4 years ago. it was a transparent one. this camera is with me since this time. now i`m collecting all cameras from the lomographics. also the cybersampler - the milky one. i love this sampler-cameras for their moving/grooving pictures they'r producing. as a grafic-designer, i use this pictures a lot and as a loving-maid i use this pictures also for sampling all this special moments with my loved humans, animals and plants. am i now the cyber-sampler-queen or is cybersampler king? we are all royals! ... The Action Sampler takes a great idea and turns it into a fun little camera. This camera uses four lenses to capture four different photos on one frame of film. 3-0 out of 5 stars Fun little camera
It's hard to rate a camera like this. It is a fun little toy camera, but limited in its uses. They probably should have space the time between pictures out a bit, because its shutter is not fast enough to stop a lot of action.

If you are not insistant on the Lomo name and bright colors, you can get a very similar camera for less money...

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Fun!
Hello, my name is Mark - and I have a problem with buying cameras.
Thats right, ever since around last april I have been binging on toy cameras - from the joycam to my latest, and most welcome addition, the lomo action sampler. I'll tell you, at first I was weary of buying this camera, with no flash, for close to 40 dollars. Out on a whim, and with the extra cash, I grabbed the credit card and decided to purchase it.
The camera actually came rather fast - and the minute I got it I ripped it open and popped in one of the 2 rolls of film they already supply you. Because they are 200 ASP I went outside and took some shots. First I just ran, then I took one of me on a swing set, etc. etc. Before you knew it, I was done with a roll of film!
Now the part I dreaded - rewinding! Now I know, I know its not that hard. But I've been living it in high style. My nice electric cameras have been doing the trick - rewinding right as I finish! How convenient! I never had to turn the dial before, or press the button at the bottom to release the film. But honestly, it was easy as can be.
So it's two days later, I grab the film and send it away to 1 hour film developing at walmart (Yes, walmart WILL develop your lomo film). An hour later I received the pictures. My heart pounding, I opened the package and looked at the first one - nothing but the best! My pictures came out wonderful and I couldn't be pleased more. Now I keep hearing about how its hard to get a nice lomo camera, without the colors on the frames. In a way, I was hoping I had one or two of those. I think they enhance the uniqueness in the photo. If you think otherwise, perhaps the lomo action sampler is not for you.
While at Walmart, I grabbed an 800 speed film for my camera. Supposedly, these will now allow me to take pictures inside, with much lighting, without the flash. I'm excited to use it, and develop a few more pictures!
Oh and yes, the camera is somewhat delicate. Be careful with your lomo, and treat it like a baby!
Have fun! Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars don't think, just shoot
i love this camera. granted, when i first got it i had problems with it. but it's just so different that i had to adjust to it. it's not supposed to give you wonderfully clear and crisp photos. that's part of the fun. this camera allows you to capture your own little world in ways that perhaps you hadn't seen before. shooting from the hip, so to speak, is the best way to use this camera. the only downfall is getting used to loading film manually and then rewinding it when you're pretty sure it's done. it's more for fun and experimentation so if you're not into that then don't get this. but if you want every roll of film you develop to be a surprise, then get it! :)

2-0 out of 5 stars the Horror!
...ignore the directions and get 800 speed film and only take pictures outdoors (on BRIGHT AND SUNNY days, and at HIGH NOON). Since its not very well made, you have to be very careful. And it hurts your thumbs to advance the film to the next frame. I like the supersampler better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad experience
My Action Sampler did't work again after I take the last photo of my first roll of film. Its shutter is rotate freely and I can't take my second roll of film. I think this camera is not worth so much even it is very interesting in snapshot. So, I perfer to pay more money for Lomo's LC-A. ... Read more
