I Love This Camera
This is a terrific camera. I have been toying around with 35mm point and shoots for the past several years. I have never been satisfied with the results. I finally decided to get rid of them and buy an SLR. I did research for about three months and could not find another camera to match this one in terms of cost and amenities. It can do just about everything the amature photographer wants to do. I have used Minolta SLRs years ago and found the cameras to be totally dependable. Minolta still makes a great product. This camera is easy to use and not intimidating. Read the manual after you shoot a few rolls of film to get used to all of the bells and whistles to use this camera to its fullest potential. The metering is fabulous. The eye-start mechanism is totally awesome for focusing. This is the best feature of the camera. You should buy this camera

A fine camera with excellent features
It has the best features in it's class - Nikon N65/N80, Canon EOS Rebel etc - you can compare side-by-side.
It can produce excellent results.
It's the lightest around which is important and really nice.
If you know your SLR a bit, having a zoom 75-300mm will be a very rewarding experience. You might find yourself using only the zoom afterwards.
Suprisingly Minolta does little publicity compared to Canon,Nikon though their products are so good.
My 2 cents advice for SLR beginners-
1.Read the manual for some length at least before starting to shoot.
2.Try not to use the All-auto(default) mode as soon as you can.Use S(125 speed is a safe choice) or A mode.
3.Specially for portraits use ISO-100 film for best clarity.
4.All cameras of this type have a small built-in flash which may disappoint you indoors. Use ISO400 film indoors.

Pro photographer
This is a very good camera is you do not want to gett a cheap slr w/ every thing thing you need but if you ever think of going digatl go with canon becuse they have better bodys and lenses and both work with all the lens they have now so i would say if u r not going to go diatl get this but if you r look at a canon flim SLR

Great features, poor reliability
This camera has great features for the price, and I was extremely happy with the quality of the photos I took in the 3 days I had the camera. Then it started eating whole rolls of film. After contacting the manufacturer they would repair it and I would pay all shipping costs. I returned it to amazon instead.

Recent buyer
Photos taken from my Minolta 5, which I recently purchased, have been by and large disappointing. Whether using manual or automatic mode for focus, lighting, subject type, etc. the resulting photos do not exceed the quality one would obtain with a normal point-and-shoot camera. So far, the "extra performance" of this SLR with multiple menus has failed to materialise. I would very much like to trade it in for another brand. ... Read more

Dissatisfied
I am an avid amateur photographer that needed a compact camera for vacations. I have always used manual focus SLR's so I was totally unfamiliar with auto anything. In making a decision on my purchase, I tried to stick with brand names. I was familiar with Canon products in the SLR arena and was always quite pleased. However, not wanting to put my eggs in one basket, I chose Minolta. WHAT A MISTAKE. The camera worked well for the first 3 months, taking brilliant color photos. After that it was down hill quickly. The camera would auto-advance the film went it felt like it, Would double and even triple expose frames, overlap frames, etc. I changed batteries, film types, and film brands in hopes of fixing the situation but none worked. In speaking with Minolta service center representatives I learned that the cost of even estimating the repairs was (...)not very cost effective. Turns out this is just an expensive disposable camera. I think I'll stick to Canon from now on.

I'll never buy another Minolta products again.
Bought this camera around September. The first roll of film came out great. About halfway through the second roll I turned the camera on and the zoom came all the way out and the lights flashed etc. I returned the camera for repair and Minolta repaired it under warranty, great. Went through 2 rolls of film for Christmas, all blurry. Returned camera to Minolta explainingg the problem and they send me an estimate for $61.00 to fix it, saying that I dropped it. I can buy a new camera for that price. I'll never buy another Minolta product.

Good for the price
This camera has a lot going for it. It's easy to use, easy to understand, and easy to buy film and batteries for. I bought this camera as a gift for my sister and took a test roll of film with it. The pictures came back sharp and the flash worked perfectly. The only thing keeping this camera from getting 5/5 is it's minimum focus distance, about 6 feet.

Don't Do it
I ordered this camera to be delivered to my vacation spot. It was and I was disappointed all the way. The camera was supposed to come with film and batteries, neither was in the box. The zoom was horrible. I went to reload a new roll of film and could not get the tab for the film to roll over to hook it on. I am returning it for a refund. Pro Camera from the mind of MInolta
I have spent a lot of time in camera stores and I have always thought Minolta products always got unfairly shoved to the side. The notion that Minolta cameras and lenses are inferior to Nikon and Canon is crap, and is perpetuated by certain camera snobs and self-proclaimed experts. I shoot regularly as an advanced amateur and I own and use the Maxxum 9. I feel that it is the most intuitive 35mm professional camera out there. The quality of construction is first rate, on par with the best that Nikon and Canon have to offer. The camera has a solid feel, everything about it is high quality. The control layout is so self-explanatory that most photographers can learn to use the camera in 5 minutes without flipping through the manual. With respect to lenses. I still run into narrow-minded people who ask me which "Nikkors" I use upon seeing my photographs, and then these self-proclaimed "experts" simply refuse to believe me when I inform them that my images are all created with Minolta AF cameras and lenses. No, I am not kicking Canon and Nikon products, obviously they are very good, several million pros using those systems cannot be wrong about them. But pretentious "camera aficionados" who slight the Maxxum 9 don't know what they are missing out on. I am sold on the Minolta Maxxum 9. When choosing lenses go for the G-Series, optically they are cut every bit as good as the very best lenses Nikon and Canon make. I've shot pictures with all these brands and even established pros who shoot with other systems admit that my images are just as sharp as any they've seen or made. And they absolutely love the 9's layout. Minolta would do well to stay with the Maxxum 9's basic concept when designing their future pro cameras. Now if they would only make a full frame digital body based on the Maxxum 9...........

Minolta just does not seem to get any credit
I have been using Minolta camera's for 5 years now. Until now I have been very happy with my 700si with vertical grip. The funny thing is that Minolta has had advanced technology in their camera's long before other manufacterers. With the Maxxum 9, they have made it to perfection. Used with the 5400HS flash system, you just can't go wrong. I use a Minolta flash V very often to check exposure levels and have found the Maxxum 9 is always in there with what it chooses for exposure. I really like the new locations and ways to adjust the camera. The two best improvments for me where the lighted exposure scale in the veiwfinder and the backlight on the display panel at the top of the camera. Pro Camera from the mind of Minolta
I have owned the camera since April 2003 and it has produced some wonderful images for me. (...) . A lot of camera aficionados claim that the Maxxum 9 is not as good as the other true pro-level cameras by Nikon and Canon. On paper, there may be some merit to this argument. Going by pure specs alone on paper, the F5 and EOS1V certainly are more electronically advanced than the Maxxum 9, and the devoted pro following for these two excellent machines is a huge statement for these two brands. By the way I'll be the first to say that Nikon and Canon both make excellent products, so if all you diehard loyalists expect me to badmouth your beloved brands just because I love Minolta, I ain't that kind of guy. But in real-world shooting situations, and taken on its own merits, the Maxxum 9 is no less of a professional machine than the F5 or EOS1V. The ease of use of the Maxxum 9 shines through. Admittedly, the Maxxum 9's AF system is more basic, but the hidden beauty is that it is simple to comprehend and use, and is plenty fast to boot. The 14-segment honeycomb metering is an older design than Canon's, and certainly not as sexy-sounding as the Nikon 1005pixel RGB sensor. But the bottom line is that it produces well-exposed images on slide film at a success rate at least as good as the other two. Simply put, the Maxxum 9 is no F5 or EOS1V, nor should it be. The simple fact is that it is a very reliable, extremely easy to use picturemaker, and as long as you mount top-quality Minolta G-Series optics on it there is no reason to feel inferior standing next to someone with an F5 or EOS1V. The popular belief that Minolta optics are inferior is also undeserved. I've watched many times over as store sales people used entry level Minolta SLRs and lenses to illustrate Minolta's "inferior" build quality against a pro-level rig in the form of a Nikon F5 with an 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S !!! I still run into snobby brandname "camera collectors" who ask me this: "Why use Minolta?" upon seeing my Maxxum 9 slung around my neck. I simply say "Why not?"

I strongly recommend you don't purchase
We have had to exchange this camera twice within the first month of having it, first it stopped taking pictures you had to shut it off zoom in and out then it would take it, the second camera did the same also it stopped taking the film, we tried several brands and it would just expose it all. very disapoointing. we contacted minolta they would only fix it not return or exchange it. we bought the canon sure shot 115 and love it so far!

The camera scratches the film
I have taken 5 rolls of film (different brands) with this camera and had them developed at 2 different labs. Every single roll has stratches on the backside of the film across the whole length of film. The scratches are in the same place. I will have to send the camera in to be serviced under warranty. Well worht the money
This camera is great! It's really small and takes wonderful pictures. I have also tried the ELPH 2 and this camera takes better pictures. If you are looking for a stylish aps camera, the vectis 300 is the way to go.

A great small camera!
I love this little camera. For a point and shoot, it takes great pictures. Because it's so small, you can take it anywhere. Although it fits in a small purse or large pocket, I usually just wear it around my neck. I haven't always treated it well. It's more rugged than I would have imagined. For the price, you can't beat it!

I give it a C+; better than average but not good. To be honest, I was disappointed. I haven't bought a camera in five years, so perhaps my expectations were out of line, but I expected more for my money.

My advice: if you can hold out a while for digital prices to drop, it'll be worth the wait.

SUPERB
This camera is absolutely superb in function, clarity, ease of use, and all around enjoyment. It is light, yet does not have the "cheap" feel of other cameras, the AutoFocus is quick and quiet, and it takes excellent pictures. The manual side of this camera is easy to setup and operate. Additional lenses can be had at reasonable prices. The built in flash works flawlessly. For those individuals who need an external flash, they can be purchased, although they are pricey. I recommend this camera for everyone from beginners to professionals.

Great Camera for the Money !!
After much research and shopping, the XTsi has the most versatility and features for the money. Most retail stores in the area only sell the less expensive Minolta Maxxum cameras at the same price as the XTsi here at Amazon. The panoramic option is great for those senic mountain views and the camera is truely intuitive. I would recommend this camera to anyone who is either just getting into photography or is looking to step up from a compact 35mm camera.

a mediocre product for such a price. excellent if cheap.
The Minolta s304 is a fine camera if you can get it for significantly less than it's current retail price. The 3.3 megapixel resolution makes for some excellent daylight shots, and the 60 second movie recorder renders superb quality avi files. However, the camera suffers excessively from camera shake in low-light conditions. In addition, the manual setting for taking shots is difficult to manipulate...even for the intermediate level photographer. Night-time shots suffer from imbalance in color levels

Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries are an absolute must for this camera. My unit came with 4 AA alkaline batteries which expired after roughly 45 minutes of usage. I've owned my current set of 1850 mAH Kodak Photolifes for roughly a year now and they've consistently given the camera an operational battery life 2-3 days with regular on/off usage.

While the s304 has a workable zoom it fails to give adequate focus (in both automatic and manual modess), rendering blurred images - especially to subjects taken with the digital zoom.

I won't recommend this camera to a first-time buyer.

Dimage S304
Ths is a great camera. I have waited for many years to get a quality digital camera with 3 Meg Pixels for under $500.00. The only disappointment is that Minolta lists that you can use alkaline batteries, which is not correct. They recommend Ni-MH, which is the only batteries I have found to work properly. Using alkaline batteries result in a low battery indication after only a few shots. Getting the Ni-MH and charger are worth the extra money. I only wish that Amazon carried the batteries and charger. On standard photo setting the supplied 16Meg memory will only store 20 pictures. I recommend getting a 64Meg memory and the USB memory reader attachment for the PC. Download to a PC is easy directly from the camera. A 6V DC adapter is also available for powering the camera, but I haven't found that this is necessary.

Good Camera (if/when it works!)
Had this camera for a little over a year and it's a piece of junk. From day one it has never worked right. At least 90% of the time it locks up when I turn it on; the red LED light stays on and I have to open the battery door for thirty seconds to reset the camera. Sometimes when I change modes it locks up. I have no confidence that it will work when I turn it on. When it does "boot up" correctly I jump for joy (is this how it's suppose to be?). This thing also uses a lot of power, my 1800ma NiMh batteries (4 AA) only lasts about 25 pics at medium resolution and small image size. It's a shame because this camera is constructed well (metal case), takes terrific pictures (when it works), zoom is great, LCD screen is very clear for it's size, uses easy to get CompactFlash cards and batteries. It's out of warranty right now and I don't think it's worth trying to repair so it'll get tossed into the rubbish can; what a waste! Maybe I just got a lemon when I bought it but I will never buy another Minolta digital camera again, this S304 really tarnished Minolta's reputation in my books. I won't tell everyone "don't buy it"......it's up to you, maybe you won't get a lemon like I did.

I would buy it again.
I looked at many many digital cameras before buying this one. I finally decided to buy it because it looked like it had everything I needed and it was cheaper than others. Well, I am really happy with my purchase. I bought this camera in 11/01 so I have had it for a long time. I have taken it to Hawaii and Florida and just around town and it has not failed me yet.

Indoor pictures are not great with this camera but they are not horrible. I have taken some professional looking pictures with this camera and look at them on the computer daily. I would not even think about using regular batteries with it though, that would be a joke. This camera does suck battery juice like crazzzy.

I enjoy taking pictures and this camera really has been great. I use webshots on my computer and I have my pictures of Hawaii cycle through on the desktop everyday, actually every 15 minutes. People are always commenting on them asking if they are professional pictures. I even printed some of them out and they looked great.

If you do not have a lot of money to spend and want a pretty good camera I would go with this one. It really has just about everything. ...

easy, simple and great features
This is my second digital camera. My first being Sony Maciva. This camera is great and very easy to use. I was at first worried about battery life but I am very please with performance of batteries. I would recommend a charger and only high quality batteries. I also bought a 64 & 128 memory card. I never run out of space.

Nice Camera
This is a nice camera for begenners as they said, or for somone who has a very old camra that needs replacing.Some of my favorite features of the camra are the auto advancing and the focus-free lens.

I got what I paid for.
Well, it was cheap. It takes OK pictures, but I got it for my 12 year old, it it was way too hard for her to get the film loading. If you touch the wrong button (which is easy to do ) it rewinds the film and you are basicly done for that roll.

This camera is a nice step up from the disposables.
