3-0 out of 5 stars A bit misleading?
The title is HP SCANJET 4600 ( Q3121A#ABA )
<- A HP Scanjet 4600 (without anymore words) is a see through flat scanner (without transparency adapter). The price of less than $50 is entirely too low to be for real. In small print at the "friendlysolutions" listing there is the following:

(...)REAL TIME availability - highly recommended before placing an order. hp scanjet transparent materials adapter "

Note the last word, "Adapter"... apparently this is the adapter that comes with the Scanjet 4670 or can be purchased separately as the "HP Scanjet 4600 transparent materials adapter." The merchant does list the model number beside the name of the scanner but who would know that is an adapter.

If you are looking for the see-through scanner look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Fast, & Fun!
When buying a new scanner, (Finally decideding to buy a new one after using the same sloooowwwww TWAIN one for 6 years), quality and speed were the top factors, along with price. Simply put, for the price of this scanner, this is the one to go with.

First of all, you insert the cd-rom software and it automatically sets up. I've seen many reviews that claim the software is bad and hard to use. I didn't have one problem at all, in fact, this was one of the easiest installlations I've ever done. Always check that you're computer is compatablie with whatever hardware you purchase. That will save a lot of crying and whining on your part.

This scanner is a BREEZE to use. 3 buttons on the front direct your scan to email, your hard drive, or your printer. One touch scanner can't get much easier. And it's FAST. To preview the scan, it takes about 2 seconds. After cropping the area of the scan you want and finializing it, the time it takes will vary depending on which DPI setting you have set, but at the average 300 DPI, it takes only about 10-12 seconds.

The DPI seetings range all the way up to 19200. The quality is EXTREMELY impresseive.

Another handy feautre is scanning a doucment with editable text. Say you scan a magazine article. You can scan it as a PDF file and edit the text very easily.

With USB connectivity, setting up the scanner is fast and easy. The software couldn't be simpler. VERY user friendly and easy to use. Within 3 minutes of set-up, I was scanning away.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this scanner. I would highly reccomend it to anyone who's looking for a fast, easy to use, and high quality scanner. And with the price that this scanner is set at, this makes it a top pick.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great resolution - poor drivers - short warranty
I bought the HP Scanjet 3500c 2 weeks ago (Christmas 2002) and found it did a great job scanning black and white drawings.

The Scanjet driver software looks very similar to the HP Scanjet II software but the implementation of this "modern" release made using the scanner slow and a chore both via the TWAIN interface or the included HP software. This software was obviously thrown over the wall and into production without any thought to making life easy for the user.

The major problem with the software is how it will automatically crop black and white (BW) documents incorrectly. I had to hand reset each page after a preview or I'll end up cutting off the upper margin of the page and scanning the cover on the bottom. Yes HP, the auto-crop check box is unchecked.

I scan mostly BW documents. I want to set the scanner to scan 8.5x11 every time and simply can't. I have to manually reset the scan area EVERY page. So the software is half baked but at least it didn't crash. I would have kept the scanner if that was the only problem I could report.

I was playing around with different originals and stumbled across a serious problem when scanning originals at 600 or greater. The RED color channel is stuck "on" 100%. This causes the photos to have a serious reddish hue to them (or BW scans using the RED channel to be all white). This only happens when the resolution is set at 600 or greater. Is this a HP hardware or a HP driver problem? I don't know but it's serious. The HP web site is no help and has not updated the 3500c drivers in the 4 months since release v1.0 was chucked out the door.

The software annoyances, red channel problem, and 90 day warranty made me decide not to chance exchanging the scanner for another HP an being left hanging after 90 days while other manufacture's backup their products for a full year.

I returned the scanner and will not purchase anything HP (to include Compaq now that they've merged with HP) that has to do with PC's (I was witness to a bad HP Pavilion computer experience 4 years ago) or photo imaging. Somewhere between the Scanjet II and today HP made their software harder to use, is content to ship products rushed to market, and reduced their warranty to 90 days.

2-0 out of 5 stars HP software and support is horrible
Ok, The scanner says 48bit color. It only scans 24bit. There are no settings anywhere to access the full range of 48 bit. (yes I know there are only a few packages that support more bit depth but photoshop is one of them).
Next, you can't scan multiple docs from within photoshop. The dialog box closes down between scans. It also doesn't remember your scan settings. Everytime you open the software it has some funky default scan settings that trash your image. Every utility included with the package has it's own default settings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good little machine.
We didn't have a lot of money but wanted a good little machine.
This Hp scanner did the trick.
It's nice looking and performs well.
Our scanning needs are not to aggresive.
But we do use it a lot for pictures and record keeping.
It's worth the price for the average PC user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner!
This scanner is easy to set up and is a great deal for the price. I don't agree with the reviews that say it is a waste of time/money because it was a breeze to set up and the quality of the scanned images is impeccable! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Hewlett-Packard's ScanJet 5300Cse is a basic scanner that more thanadequately fills an impressive range of needs. The accompanying software CD-ROMalso includes three especially helpful programs--the Boomerang Internet DesignShop, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, and the Hemera Photo-Objects Gallery--along with thewell-designed scanner driver and other extras.

Setting up the scanner itselfwas a breeze. We installed and loaded the software in about 25 minutes. Then, wehot-plugged the scanner (kept the computer on while connecting the scanner) intoour PC's USB port. In fact, we recommend that you keep your PC on, as thescanner driver software displays short video snippets that clearly demonstratehow to perform each step. On our computer screen, we watched actual human handssetting up an actual scanner.

The ScanJet's oversized quick-installationposter was cumbersome for us to unfold and follow. Also, there is no printeduser's guide, so if you have questions, you'll have to consult the extensiveelectronic version on the CD-ROM.

In our tests of the 5300Cse, we scanneddocuments into text. The scanner was also quick enough that we could use itsimply as a copier and could send an image directly to our printer. With asimple click, you can attach images to e-mail or send them via fax.

Hewlett- Packard makes other models similar to the ScanJet 5300Cse, some complete with anautomatic sheet feeder and some with a transparency adapter, but what we foundcompelling about the 5300Cse is its simplicity. This scanner is a good, solidflatbed model, unencumbered with gadgetry that may not be applicable to manyusers' needs. With its 1,200 dpi resolution, the 5300Cse does a beautiful job ofscanning text and photographs and making copies--the tasks we think you'll careabout most. --David Greenberger

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value for the Price
For the casual home user, this is a great scanner. For scanning photograhs to e-mail and for importing images for greeting cards, brochures, and so on, this scanner is just fine. Scanning time is fairly quick. The software allows you to manipulate images to try and improve a photo or cut and paste one photo with another to create an entirely new image. For text, I would not recommend this scanner. Even top-line scanners have trouble with text, so don't expect great character recognition from this low-end model. Again, for the casual home user, you can't do much better than the 5300Cse; it does what most people want a scanner to do and it does it well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Scanner, No Problems
I got this scanner two weeks ago & it has been great. It took 20 minutes to install the scanner software & hook up the scanner. Very good quality, & mediocre character recognition. Scans in photo quality so it looks just like the original picture. The 4 buttons on the front make for easy access to all scanner options. It can also scan directly to the web, printer, fax, or photo program. Overall a very good scanner with very good features

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection.
This is a great quality scanner for scanning anything from photos to documents. I highly reccommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner
HP 5300CSE is a great scanner. I scanned all kinds of photos and some documents for faxing the first week I had it. It works great with no problems, and through the USB connection it's pretty fast too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for scanning photos
My biggest problem with this scanner is that it has no software to adjust the picture (contrast, color, size, etc) in any way, except trimming, either prior to or after scanning. You can't even rotate the picture! Most times this is just an annoyance because you have to open another image-editing program to do even the simplest thing. It comes with the shareware version of Adobe Photodeluxe Business Edition (which is weak even in the full form) to do this, which is acceptable for simple jobs. When the scanner converts to jpeg the image looks hideous (but this scanner is the only software I've seen to do it so poorly), so you must manually change the file from bmp to jpeg/etc for every single picture.

BUT, this becomes more than just an annoyance if you're scanning art. There are only two options for contrast prior to scanning: 'auto-sharpen image' or 'don't sharpen'. If you don't sharpen, every image looks muddy, awful, and unacceptable. If you sharpen, images with shading look awful. (it turns a softly shaded section into hideous patches of color) IMPORTANT: You can not fix this in any image editor! I have Adobe Photoshop, the industry standard image editor costing hundreds of dollars. I've tried to decrease contrast and increase brightness, scale down the picture slightly with bicubic resampling, and use the blur filter. I've also tried scanning it larger and shrinking it later. Nothing works!

Colored or B/W pencil works end of looking the worst. It's not that you just lose some of the original's quality, it's that they look awful. I wish I could show you an example but no links are allowed in reviews.

Don't get this scanner if you're an artist or if you're concerned about quality. If you're only scanning photos, it's okay, because the effect on photos is barely noticable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck
This is the first scanner I have ever bought and I must say I'm impressed with the quality of the scans, the ease of use, and USB installation is a breeze. There were a few problems with the installation, however. You're going to need a patch from HP (get it on their web site) to solve one problem. You're also going to need a patch from microsoft to solve another USB issue (if you're running Windows 98SE like I am)... and finally, I needed help from the Adobe Web site to get their PhotoShop software running (which comes with the scanner and is pretty cool to play with). All of these patches can be had for free via the HP, microsoft, and Adobe web sites using the online support features.

Having to update drivers when you first get new hardware isn't all that unusual so don't let that scare you. $149 for this scanner is a great deal in my opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Review for the magazine photo scanners, DON'T BUY!
If you are one of those types of people who like to scan stuff out of a magazine, I wouldn't buy this product at all. When I always tried to scan photos from magazines I'd always get this weird light effect across the whole image. The best I can describe it is, you know how if your cable is bad and you see an annoying black bar that keeps going across the screen. Well this was what happened to my magazine scans. I'd get a transparent yellowish bar (pinkish too) that went across the whole photo and editing didn't even help to get rid of it. Honestly my suggestion is if you scan photos for the web from magazine clippings, don't buy this scanner. The images come out terrible, plus the speed is very slow. This product isn't even worth the lowest rating you can give a product on Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST SCANNER IN THE MARKET TODAY
HP Deskjets and Laserjets are at the top of its class, but the HP Scanjet series are probably the worst of its class. Why?

I bought an HP Scanjet 3300c,and the following are its weaknesses:
FIRST, its so bulky and big and its not compact
SECOND, its not portable it will get broken when you bring it on the road or to travel
THIRD, its a very very slow scanner, with a very long waiting time for it to warm up
FOURTH, it has no power on button, so ull never know if its actually working or not until its too late
FIFTH, it has the worst programs its so simple that u actually have no use for it except if you get an Adobe or any photo editing software, it does not cater to creative consumers like us
SIXTH, it has the worst software drivers, the 3300c is made in the time of Win98, when i made a switch to WinME and WinXp I never got to use it again effectively and normally, it would work one time, and in the next, the scanner can't be found by the computer and cannot be detected

SEVENTH, it has the worst software support upgrade, the drivers and softwares especially the HP Precision Scan LT just got no support, if it doesnt work youll be helpless.
EIGTH, it has the worst custommer support ever, the technicians cant even fix the scanner, the scanner involves lots of guess work to use, ull use it 10% of the time you own it, 90% of the time just fixing it.
NINTH, low quality for all those who bought this scanner, almost everyone got furiously mad and dismayed, they thought that HP Scanners are good quality, just dont bet on it,you find it quite hard to operate or maybe broken have it replaced immediqately, HP Scanners are unserviceable, you can only have it replaced, that is if youve not yet passed the one year warranty period
TENTH, overall HP Scanners are expensive, bulky, low tech, with very complicated software, andd its downside the hardware itself.

Please phase out this model, it would ruin your HP Scanner line, your other scanners are also not good suffering the same fate, beware of buying this scanner, its a waste of your precious time, and money.

HP Scanjet Series, a waterloo for HP, its like going back to vintage scanners of old.

1-0 out of 5 stars FAILs TO WORK WITH WINDOWS XP
Beware of this scanner, HP is either unwilling or unable to get this scanner to work properly with Win XP. Even after downloading the software that is supposed to get it to function on XP it is still a complete failure.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
This scanner worked fine for me at first. No problems installing the unit to my Windows98 machine using USB connection. Then, after about eight months, I downloaded updated drivers and other software from HP's web site. That was the beginning of the ugly part. After installing the new software, I kept getting an error message saying that the program "cannot find the scanner." I'm embarrassed to say how many hours I spent trying (unsuccessfully) to get the program to "find" the scanner. Finally, I called HP tech support. That was the good part. A very knowledgeable and friendly HP techncian named "Helen" stayed on the line with me for a full two hours (no joke!) trying to solve the problem. The bad part was that, alas, she also was unsuccessful. She concluded that the scanner must be defective. I plan to try installing the scanner on another computer. If that doesn't work, I'll buy another scanner from Amazon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Color Negative Scanner
The S20 can scan a strip of upto 4 or 5 images nicely in one hit! I have no idea about scanning prints as I don't use it for this. 300dpi for scanning prints isn't high. 2400dpi for scanning slides and color negatives is awesome!

There have been reviews previously at various places that complain that the S20 cannot batch process a whole negative strip. Wrong!! Use the twain driver though Photoshop, PaintShopPro CorelDraw, etc. When the preview is done, adjust each image shown as you wish, set your scan resolution, and then HOLD DOWN the CTRL key and select the images you want to scan. Press Final Scan. Done. Images all arrive nicely separately in Photoshop, etc. Simple.

Contrary to other reviews, you can scan every image shown WITHOUT having the remove and re-insert the negative strip for each photo as others have claimed.

I have tried using Vuescan with the S20. I have found that the HP's twain driver is more than enough to scan high res (3300x2200) images into Photoshop. Vuescan is very nice, but not needed. The S20's HP drivers are actually pretty good. Very easy to use. The image levels are automatically selected by the scanner, but you can opt to over/under-expose, resize, re-crop, re-color, etc yourself prior to the final scan.

The S20 is an excellent color negative scanner for a fraction of the Nikon LS-2000 price! I keep a can of compressed ait handy for cleaning negatives and occasionally the scanner itself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent for the Amateur, but not for the advanced amateur/pro
My first film scanner was the HPS20. It "did okay", and that's the best I'll give it. Basically, if your'e at all serious about film scanning, you MUST go to something better, and yes, that means spending a bit more money. I went up to the far, far superior Nikon Coolscan 2000, and might try the 4000 soon, and my results were out of this world better. In todays market, I'd look at doubling my investment and get maybe the Nikon Coolscan IV or find a used Coolscan 2000 or something. The major problems with the HP are color correction on chromes, low dynamic range, it gathers dust like a maids broom, and the shadows are definitely noisy. For the once in a while amateur who just wants to move a few slides or negs to digital and absolutely doesn't expect to get "into" digital darkroom work, then it's probably a steal for the money. But be warned, if you even think there is a slight chance you might move onward to more digital darkroom work, skip this entirely and get something real the first time out, and you'll save the money over the long haul. Recommended with definite restrictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The S20 ***WORKS*** with Windows XP
I am not rich and I paid a lot of money for this product.

Thankfully, it was worth every penny and I have been using it happily for over 3 years.

There are better scanners out there, but for the dollar, this is a fabulous machine: thus, the five star rating.

That said, please note that this unit ***DOES*** in fact work with Windows XP. At one point I thought it did not work either, but it does. HP released an XP driver/software for it.

At 70 MB, it's a hell of a download, but worth it for those of us that have moved into the 21st century.

You can download it from the HP website.

- Go to HP.com.
- Select 'Home & Home Office.'
- Type 'S20' into the Search field.
- The HP Photosmart S20 and a photo will appear.
- Select 'Download drivers & software' from this screen.
- Select 'Microsoft Windows XP.'
- Select 'PhotoSmart Scanner (SCSI) and S20/S20xi Photo Scanner (USB) Software.'
- Click 'Download now' to being downloading ps804en.exe.
- Follow instructions (or common sense) to install the software.
- A Windows-based message will appear during installation that recommends stopping installation because the HP Photosmart software has not passed Windows Logo testing.
- Despite your usually better judgement, ignore this and click 'Continue Anyway.'

I was terrified to do this, but I called and e-mailed HP directly and was told in both instances that HP had tested and verified compatibility of the HP Photosmart software with Windows XP.

My Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart S20 scanner now works like a charm on my Windows XP.

Hooray for HP.

1-0 out of 5 stars HP forgot XP
Although my S20 worked fine with Windows 98 on my previous computer, I was not able to find any drivers from HP when I bought a new computer running on XP. HP should be ashamed of itself for treating their customers in this manner. I will never purchase another HP product.

3-0 out of 5 stars no win ME
This scanner worked really well for me (I scan a LOT of negatives). The only complaints are:
-noisy scan
-DONT WORK WITH WINDOWS ME! There are no drivers and this makes it very hard when I depend on this scanner for work! So I need to get a new scanner now :(
Besides that it scans well ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Looking for a good basic scanner for home or small office use? The Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6350Cse professional scanner is a strong performer and is easy to set up, so you will be scanning in no time.

The ScanJet 6350Cse is a solid basic scanner that more than adequately fills a useful range of needs. Setup and installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized quick installation poster was easy to read and simple to follow. If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the coach feature (part of the extensive online help system) or other online help, since the 6350Cse doesn't include a printed user's guide. You can also use the internal coach to help scan your work after a quick but thorough tutorial. (It took us only 10 minutes to run through all the steps.)

In our tests, the scanner required a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half. After warm-up, we quickly reproduced flat images and slides using several different preset dpi settings. The scanner also has an automatic feeder for scanning multiple flat documents or images, which we found particularly useful. With the feeder attached, the scanner can handle up to five scans per minute. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, but it produces vivid scans.

This is a fairly effortless scanner that can meet a wide range of needs. Whether paired with an ink-jet or laser printer, you will get crisp, clear scanned images. You can also fax scans or attach them to an e-mail with the click of a button. --David Greenberger

Pros:

  • Can handle a full range of originals

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the HP name
This scanner has many good points, but doesn't live up to the HP name. It warms up slowly, scans slowly, and the manual slide mechanism on the 6390 version is a pain. I bought it to support a busy customer reception area, and it just isn't up to the job. Being a relatively expensive scanner, and an HP, I expected more.

The SCSI interface is VERY nice, and using it reduces the time per scan considerably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and quality scanner!
I have this scanner for more than a 1.5 years now. I have choosen it because it's HP, and for the document feeder (there is no slide adapter with the 6350, it is bundeled with the 6390).

What I did not like is the miss of a printed manual (only on CD-rom) and the lack of an extensive on-line help (the help is very brief)! The 5 buttons on the scanner is just a joke for me, never used - I always wanted to make a scan/copy with other settings than the defaults. I have also configured the scanner to be used over our netwrok, whcich does not have much sense to me, but it works without problem.

The scanner have a SCSI-II interface, which let's it transfer data to the computer as fas as it reads from the glass. The document feeder is very useful, especially when making photo copies (the photo copy utility is very useful) or whith OCR through big quantities. The control software is really good too, let's you take control of all settings, no cut down.

I can recommend this scanner for all serious soho users!

3-0 out of 5 stars Requires Minor Quality Tweaks
I did not purchase my 6350 at Amazon, but did so elsewhere. I have lived with this scanner for 2 months now. Here are my thoughts on this product. Note that the 3-stars and title I give this product are slightly misleading. The scanning quality is exceptional. The automatic document feeder (ADF) is a huge plus, and convenience. The software package included is alright. The setup and connections were no problems at all. With minor tweaking of this product, HP could really make it a scanner that will get it 5-stars in every category. Consider the following: 1. The scanner does not include faxing software, or at least I could not find any. This is a minor issue, however.... 2. The scanner optical "glass" surface had smudge marks and foggy spots, right out of the box. Perhaps better quality control/assurance practices at HP will fix this. Items with such obvious defects should never leave the manufacturing facility. Note that the average user cannot clean the underside of the scanner "glass". Hp does not recommend this for the 6350. 3. HP should have packaged the standard document cover with this unit as well. In cases where the ADF is required to be removed for repairs, the standard top could easily be put on. 4. The construction and design of the unit is not conducive to keeping the interior dust free. I state this as the chassis has several visible openings, that could introduce dust, fibres into the inside of the scanner. Perhaps HP designed it this way for ventilation and dessipation of built up heat from the unit. HP could perhaps better the design in future versions of this model. Since the 6300 is the identical model without the ADF, this fact applies to it as well, and other similar HP models too. In summary, I am quite pleased with this product. It does have the potential to be a GREAT product with a little more effort on HP's part. Sincerely, aba4430

4-0 out of 5 stars A Noticeable Difference
There seems to be an over emphasis on business equipment and adult toys when it comes to computers these days. I think it is important to remember that an entire generation is being raised in the computer age. Many children are far more sophisticated in their abilities than traditional at home products are designed and targeted towards.

A perfect example of what a home system should have is the HP ScanJet 6350Cse. Here is a product that not only provides mom and dad what they need for work, but, also provides the children a high quality alternative for school projects that will knock the teacher's socks off. All this and it still won't break the bank.

From the moment you open package you will see the quality of the product. Using it only increases the pleasure. The scan quality is crisp, sharp and incredibly fast. The ability to quickly move from medium to medium is fantastic. If you use your computer for faxing the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is an absolute life saver, and the more you use the ADF the more you will appreciate having it.

Personally, I recommend getting the SCSI card and cable, an optional accessory. It will increase your scanning speed and even sharpen your scanning ability. While the USB connection is more than adequate, the SCSI card is that much better and brings out the full capabilities of the unit.

Scanning is really an essential capability these days. From all in one printers and separate fax machines, to expensive high end units it is easy to spend more on acquiring the abilities the 6350 series offer and still not get the consistent quality. The software package is more than adequate and actually offers some nice versatility compared to other packages that come standard with other units. This is one investment that will not become obsolete as soon as you open the package. You will definitely appreciate the quality of your choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look before you buy a HP Scanjet 6350 Cse
I have always liked HP products. Unfortunately they have started putting the customer second.

A friend and I both received this product for Christmas and now I wish I did more research before asking for this particular product.

First, we both had problems installing the scanner. The installation turned out to be the easy problem to solve. The hard part was finding the support number. It seems that they intentionaly made it difficult to find. Once you find the number you will notice that it is a long distance number, which means it will show up on your phone bill. You will also spend an average of 30 min. per call. Therefore, my first complaint is that the customer service is very bad.

Second, the slide attachment is a joke. It does not work. If you are thinking about buying this because it has a slide attachment, which I was, then do not even consider this product.

On the other hand, the flatbed scanner and the paper feeder do work well. If I had known what I know now about this scanner, I would not have bought, or asked, for it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ADF not reliable, PDF conversion does not work
I bought a 7490c scanner mainly because I needed to convert paper documents to PDF files.

Unfortunately, even if the scanner works quite well without using the ADF or preparing PDF documents, I could not succeed in doing what I needed.

The Automatic document feeder is not reliable for scanning A4 papers, since while taking the papers it often rotates them giving a rotated image as a result.

Moreover the Hp precision scan pro 3.0 software has a bug in producing black and white PDF files , and HP does not know how to fix it.

Therefore, if you need to have a large number of pages scanned , avoid this scanner and go for a fujitsu. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and fun....
I recently purchased the HP PS1000 4x6 Photo Scanner. I bought this because I am into genealogy. I need to be able to scan photos from relatives without the hassle of taking the picture home, scanning into my PC, sending the picture back to the relative....UGH!! This way, I can hook the scanner to my laptop and have my own copy of the photo instantly. The scanner is small, easy to use and scans very quickly...better than my home flatbed scanner! The software included edits photos easily. I also recently purchased a portable photo printer, also by HP. If you're in need of mobile scanning, this is the scanner to get!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not sure what I was looking for
I recently bought the HP 4x6 photo scanner. It is great for what it is. A convenient and quick and easy to use scanner for someone who only wants to scan their photos onto their computer. I quickly realized though its not for me. Im taking mine back to get an upgraded HP scanner. I have photos that are bigger than 4x6 and therefore the scanner wont work. Also, the dpi is only 300. It looks good, but the bigger scanners have a much higher resolution and you can use them for more projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars all i can say is WOW
This is a GREAT little photo scanner. Its so easy to use and put onto your computer. Its also a great price and I ended up buying these for a few friends last christmas. The quality is excellent!!!! The software allows you to instantly see the image and manipulate it before saving it. This is a great gift for someone who has tons of pictures lying around! I cant remember but I think it only goes up to a 5 x 7 print but thats more than enough for me as most of the standard photos I get now are 4 x 6. I do have a digital camera but this is so cheap and comes in handy when my friends show me pictures and i want a copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jaguar & Panther Compatibility. Great Price!
I purchased this scanner at a local store for around the same as Amazon. I plugged it in to my iMac running OS X and iPhoto worked like a champ. This is an incredible bargain scanner. There are some slight annoyances with OS X but not like some of the USB XP issues that I've heard about on various sites. This scanner is NOT DIRECTLY STATED as being compatible with Mac OS X. I've tested this unit in Panther and it also works great. Keep in mind that this scanner is a low-resolution scanner and shouldn't be purchased if you're being picky with detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mac friendly!
I was nervous that this scanner wouldn't play nicely with my iBook, as I couldn't find any reference on the web to people being able to use it successfully with OS X, but I should have known better than to worry. All I had to do was plug it in to my USB port and I was off and running! It's not the absolute highest scan quality, but for [$] and very little desk space I'm not complaining - it's perfect for web and email stuff. A few notes if you do get one to use with a Mac: 1) The scanner shows up as a removable disk on the desktop and gives the "You forgot to eject me" error when you press the scan button; as far as I can tell, this doesn't hurt anything; 2) if you're going to drag the scanned file to the desktop and then drop it into iPhoto, you'll want to Get Info and unlock the original before trashing it instead of freaking out like I did because it won't go away. Other than those small annoyances (which will probably go away with third-party drivers, if they bother you that much), this little scanner is exactly what I was looking for! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as these reviews make it out to be.
HP has made a quality scanner at a bargain price.

They've tried to make slide and negative scanning easy, and failed, but perhaps because it CAN'T be as easy as pressing one button on a scanner. You have to pay attention to details to get good results from slides and negatives, with either a $100 scanner or a $5,000 scanner, and I've used plenty of both.

The software leaves a lot to be desired in terms of responsiveness, but if you READ THE MANUAL... (strange concept, eh?) you'll discover that there is a control application called the "Director" which makes scanning faster and easier to control, than fumbling with the default user interface and its auto-preview delay.

I too had problems with the auto-cropping of whitespace and negative scanning, until I took 5 minutes to go to HP's website, read the TMA scanning document in the FAQ for this product, and do what it says to do (in essence: use the Director application instead of the scanner buttons). Which results in: perfect scans.

My only complaint re: negative scanning: the mount is difficult to handle, and shoving a long strip of negs through it results in light leakage of the TMA lamp, and dark scans. So, you HAVE to cut your negs if you have strips of more than 4 per.

Two stars for making a good scanner at a cheap price.

One star for putting up with ignorant consumers who don't read manuals, and for actually putting useful information up on their website. HP may no longer provide good human support, but the online support is decent.

Oh, and the software takes up NOWHERE NEAR 4GB, as one reviewer claimed. It is, however, atrociously slow (to be fair, I have yet to encounter ANY truly "fast" scanning software, on any platform).

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far!
An awesome scanner for the money. Paid $39 at Circuit City (Sorry Amazon). Works like a dream. Of course you could get a higher end scanner but it would be a higher end price to boot. Does everything that the model replacing it does for about $50 less.

2-0 out of 5 stars Clumsy Interface
I recently bought the hp scanjet 3570c to work with my OS X Mac only because my old scanner was no longer combatable with the new operating system. I have been less than pleased with the performance of my scanner. The interface is clumsy, and I feel that I have much less control over scanning preferences (i.e., descreening options) than I use to with my last scanner. The one button scanning never seems to work right. Spend a little more and get something that is going to work well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner for a great price
I paid $40.00 for this scanner at Circuit City. I got it home and about 5min after I took it out of the box I was scanning and printing some very old photos (yes I did install all the software). I have used other scanners (school, work, kinkos) and this has got to be the simplest to use. Fool proof. Just press a little button, if you want to email your scan just press the button with the envelope picture, just a simple scan just press the scanner button. Like I said Fool Proof. I have no idea what others are saying about white space being cropped out and the guy that says you need 4gb to install the software is a total lie. I guess he must have something against the HP brand. I will admit that the lamp takes some time to warm up (30 sec.) but that is really no problem. I will admit that the scans that it makes are not as good quality as some high end scanners but it is really great. I have scanned some old photos that are like 3x4 and have printed them up to 8x10 with great quality. I give it 5 stars because of the price I paid, the ease of use and the quality I get from it with my experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars HP sure missed on this one.
I have other HP products that I am very pleased with, an "all in one" Printer, a photo printer, and a portable printer that I am very pleased with. Howerer, this scanner is not one of those. I am very disappointed with it. I am taking it back to the store. I bought it mostly for scanning slides and negatives. this function does not work well at all when it does work. it then gives anerror when the scanning is complete and the image is lost.It is also very slow. I use my all in one for scanning but it does not have slide and negative abilities. HP customer service is the main glaring weak point with any product. If the product works OK, but if it dosnt you are out of luck you probably get no help from Hp. Many people know this by now. their reputation for good service is non existant.Several of us who looked into this problem suspect it is mostly a software problem. Since installing it in the computer it has also corrupted another HP software program.I would recommend that no one should buy this scanner. HP sure missed the mark with this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner.
Good scanner, decent software.

The scanner itself is lightweight and somewhat small, though it is not intended for space-saving. It's not bulky like most Visioneer models, but it's not slim, either. The one problem I have with the scanner itself is that the top often slides off when I don't intend it to, and it's annoying to have to put the little hinges back into the scanner.

The quality is okay; it's not something I'd use to scan pictures and expect them to be all perfect quality, but I scan art with this scanner, and for that purpose it is sufficient. It's not meant for something professional, and for the price it is well worth it.

As far as the software goes... the people complaining that it makes their computers freeze probably have a technical problem with their computers, not the actual scanner or the scanner software. Problems such as this could easily be fixed if people had the incentive to actually learn a little something about computers, instead of expecting the entire digital world to work with the simplicity and "user friendly" ease of AOL or Windows XP. It'd be nice if all of the digital world did work like that, but the real world doesn't, either. Sometimes it's a simple problem such as a driver incorrectly installed or the wrong driver installed (which, in most cases, is the USER's fault) and people spend months struggling with their computers going haywire. Then they end up complaining that it's the company's fault, when a lot of times I'm just seeing it's the innate inability for some humans to interact with technology. I'm just a little tired of seeing good products get bad reviews and bad ratings because people don't know how to work with technology.

Tangent aside, this is pretty much a good scanner with decent software (personally, I prefer importing the images through Adobe, but, whatever).

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this scanner
Don't buy this scanner.
Though the hardware is reasonable at the price (but mine malfunctions if placed too close to the computer), the software is truly the worst software of any type that I have seen in recent years. The software has infuriating problems such as refusing to scan an image of standard dimensions unless I preview every scan. As a result this scanner is very hard and very slow to use for scanning printed documents intended to send to an OCR package. I was expecting it to be slow but it is unspeakably slow because the software is VERY slow to laod and initialize and many of the software features can't be used and workarounds are needed at every turn. I was trying to use it on an 800MHz Windows 98 computer. The updated drivers on the HP web site are in some ways worse than the older ones. When you've wrestled with it for an hour to scan in a simple 15 page document you will get the idea. Best avoided if you can find any alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars HP Scanjet 2200c
This is a review for the model before the 2300c came out. The 2200c scanner works just fine, not fast but gets the job done. I have never had problems getting the picture I wanted, never had to scan more than once. Good, solid product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well for us
I bought this scanner for a computer room in the children's dept of a busy public library. Our computer trainer thought the software was pretty good and although it isn't a fast, high end scanner we are quite happy with it. It's actually a very good scanner for the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this scanner!
This product is horrendous! The software constantly freezes up, forcing me to reboot and the scanning head gets stuck on the glass. I had to pry open the top half of the scanner and rest it on the bottom to get it to scan at all. Do not buy this product! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner!
I bought this scanner a couple of months ago and I've been very happy with it. Although it has some weak points the scanner itself is so good that you won't even notice it.

Good points:

- It's fast as long as you are not using 1200 or 2400 ppi. It really slows down on those resolutions when scanning in color.

- Great images. The photos scanned with the 5400c are sharp, crisp and vivid. Sometimes when you get an image which is too bright or too dark you can easily correct it from the driver.

- The installation is a breeze. There is an illustrated poster which helps you setup your scanner and in a couple of minutes you're ready to scan your image.

- The software is great. Although it lacks some advanced color settings I think is good enough for everyone. And I don't know why is Mike saying in his review that you cannot specify output format. In fact there are many formats that you can save to:

- tiff
- gif
- jpg
- bmp
- pdf
- html
- fpx
- pcx
- png

- rtf

- There is an option to send your results to MS WORD, Excel, Adobe photoshop, etc

WEAK POINTS:

- If you want to scan with 48 bit color mode you have to choose it every time from preferences setting - it's also rather hard to find it.

- slow on 1200 & 2400 ppi modes.

- no printed manual

- the ocr software is also not the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner for the price, NO trouble with ANYTHING
I have recently bought an entire new computer system: monitor, CPU, printer and scanner. I was interested in a lower model scanner at first until I was talked into buying this model. I have NEVER regretted this purchase. I am a photographer and have prints from just about everything that need cropping after being scanned and this scanner does the job well. Scan resolution on this is great and the print quality when it comes out is just as sharp. I couldn't ask for more:)

In the market for a complete system like me??? Read my other reviews on: HP 753n computer, HP mx70 monitor, and HP 7350 printer.

4-0 out of 5 stars For [the price], you get a very solid Scanner
I Searched for a scanner with a [price limit] I seen them all and got this one. very easy to use, a nice bundle of software. "HP" did good with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars hp scanjet 5490
this model comes with the 25 page ADF and transparency adapter. The scanner is technically impressive -- when it works. I had to return the scanner itself 30 days after I purchased it, with only light usage-- and it was replaced with a remanufactured model. So far (30 days later) the scanner still seems to be working, but the ADF failed--was sent a new one--which never worked, and am now waiting for a third one.

Very disappointed with "the new HP"

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner, Horrible Software
I have tried many HP scanners over the past year. While all of them are very good mechanically wise, the software (HP Precisionscan and Pro) leave MUCH to be desired.

One point is the ability to have the scanner automatically detect regions. It's a great feature but if it detects a Color Photograph as black and white and you are in the middle of a batch scan job, expect to take about an extra minute or two for each one where that happens. There is no "Always output in color" selection, and there is no way to specify what kind of file you wish to have output (jpg, bmp, gif, etc.).

Another huge problem is the "Scan To" destination box. While in the help it says that there are "updates" to add more programs as destinations, I could not find a single reference to it on the hp.com site which the Help file referenced as where to find them. There is no simple way of adding destinations to this program and as such, you will find it extremely frustrating if you want to have it scanned into other than default destinations.

So if you are in the market for a good scanner with bad software, and only plan to scan into the pre-programmed into destinations (which are few and unhelpful) you MIGHT consider getting this scanner. Otherwise get an Epson or Microtek scanner... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interface is slow, slow, slow.
Software interface takes much too long to load, and the slide and negative scans are poor quality.

Everytime you scan a new image, the "scanner lamp" warming up message appears, even if you've just used the scanner. This typically takes 15-20 seconds.

After the warm-up, if you need to switch from the default flatbed mode to a slide or film mode, the "scanner lamp" warming up appears still again.

Software installs with all sorts of bundled stuff for the average user, but most annoying to get rid of when you don't want it, like the e-fax (electronic fax service). After using the uninstall, I found I had to go through the registry and manually delete efax entries to keep the button from appearing on every program on my computer.

After installing, I hauled out my older Visioneer -- better scans, better price, faster GUI.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
the results you get from this scanner will take your breath away.i have it teamed up with an epson stylus color 880 printer and the results are nothing but fantastic. the scanner is so easy to use, many operations done with the pushing of one button. to send anything to e-mail is especially easy.i have copied and printed photos from old sports illusrated magazines(from the 60's) and the results were amazing. at the price this scanner can't be beat.

2-0 out of 5 stars slide scans are rubbish, only good for documents
slide scans are rubbish, only good for documents

3-0 out of 5 stars Works good for winME but NOT WinXP.
I liked the scanner and it worked in WinME very well but when I upgraded to WinXP (clean install) I could not even install the software from HP's site on my computer. That is the reason I purchased this scanner because it was to be XP compliant. Don't get this if you are going to upgrade to XP, it will not work....

3-0 out of 5 stars Works OK
This is a fairly decent scanner with some useful features and a few quirks. The first scanner that I received was faulty. By a diligently searching the Web and then fighting the HP automated phone system, I managed to get through to HP technical support without having to pay (you've got to lie to the system until you find an option that lets you through to a person because if you tell the automated system you're calling about this machine, they will tell you that you have to pay to talk to tech support). After being put on hold for an hour, I finally got to talk to a person in India who asked me to describe the problem. It wasn't until I got the machine to make its horrible grinding noises that the tech support person could hear all the way over there in India that she agreed there really was a problem. 10 days later, I had a free replacement arrive from HP. In reading other reviews for this scanner, I can see that I wasn't the only one who received a faulty machine the first time around. I'm not sure whether this is due to a bad inspection team at HP or that the machines do not stand up to the rigors of shipping very well. In any case, if you need a working machine in a hurry, this might not be the best choice.

My new working model does most of what I needed it for. It has an array of buttons on the front that allow you to do a quick scan, send to the Web, e-mail, and photocopy, and a few other buttons whose purposes I haven't deduced yet. (The scanner came with a quick-start card and software, but no manual.) The software included a limited version of Corel Print Office (without templates)- -like Microsoft Publisher, E-Fax messenger Plus, HP Photo Smart (for organizing photographs), and HP PrecisionScan. No OCR software was included. The software installed satisfactorily on my aging IBM 600 Laptop running Windows 2000. Of these software packages, the only one I actually use is the HP PrecisionScan.

Black and white text images scan with acceptable, but not great quality. I used the photocopy button on the scanner to photocopy some pages from a book, and a handy copy machine interface appeared on my monitor, where I could select the number of copies, the quality of the print, and adjust the contrast. With the text and photo setting selected, the page came out printed gray, so I had to choose the text-only setting. With the text-only setting and high quality printing selected, the background text was white, but the letters of the text were still rather pixilated when the copies came off the printer. In a pinch, I could use this scanner for photocopying, but this wouldn't be my tool of choice to get the job done well.

One of the main reasons I selected this scanner was that I needed an affordable way to scan in photographic slides for my Website and PowerPoint shows. This scanner comes with an ATA device with a backlight for scanning slides and negatives. The plug for the ATA device is on the back of the machine, and it's a real trick to get it in. I found myself standing the scanner on end vertically and fighting with the plug, praying all the while that I didn't break something inside the machine while I struggled. But in the end, I got the ATA plug in, and vowed never to unplug it. Which is a pain, because then you need to find a place to store the ATA device within a short distance of the scanner, but not on the glass because its funny shape will dent the scanner lid. When I finally got the ATA working, I found the scanning quality once again to be acceptable, but not great. After scanning a slide, I almost always have to adjust the color in my photo editing software, usually bringing down the blues and playing up the reds. I had better luck with the old non-electrical plastic reflective slide scanning pyramids that HP used to give away. I wish you could purchase them somewhere- -I've found directions for making them out of paper on the web, but the plastic ones worked at least as well as the expensive ATA device.

I've also tried scanning some negatives using the ATA device. Ugh! I tried scanning them in negative mode with the PrecisionScan software, and they came out dark with no reds at all. With a lot of brightening, the image was generally recognizable, but not aesthetic. I also tried scanning negatives in slide mode and then reversing the colors in my photo editing software, with virtually identically results- -dark with no reds. By changing the scans to gray scale and lightening them a lot, the images could almost be made acceptable, but not quite.

So, if you're looking for a scanner that produces acceptable, but not great, scans from text or slides, and you already have your own OCR software and you don't need to scan negatives, then this scanner might do the job. But buy it well before your deadline in case you get a bad one and need to return it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for scanning documents and photos, but nothing else
I was looking at film scanners before happening upon this unit. I was torn between the ability to scan pictures and the desire to scan negatives, but felt that I didn't have to compromise with this scanner! At 2400dpi (the same res as a film scanner) I figured I would be getting the best of all worlds, but you know the old saying, "If it looks to good to be true..."

Here is the bottom line, this is a great scanner for documents and photos. In fact, scanning a 4x6 photo produces excellent results... better than scanning the corresponding negative. How is this you ask? I would like to know the answer as well. As far as I can tell I could not get HP Precisionscan Pro to get what I'd call a decent scan on a negative. Theoretically a 2400dpi optical scan would give me about a 3200x2300 pixel image. At 48 bit color, one could imagine the detail. Well keep imagining. As I mentioned the best I could get was the same scan quality of a 4x6 print and even that was questionable. I sent an e-mail to HP support and have had no response for 4 days now. I'd like to give HP the benefit of the doubt, but if I can't get answers, I'm sure I can find anther scanner at 1/2 the price to do photos and documents just as well, even if it is the 4470.

4-0 out of 5 stars scanner for the die-hard graphics artist
This product was first shipped with styrofoam residue on the INSIDE of the case... this caused spots on all of my pictures.

But Amazon was very quick at replacing the defective product. On second try, I found the 2400x2400 dpi resolution to be so much more than was necessary that I was shocked. My experience with inferior products worried me about buying anything less. At 2400, you could probably make highway billboard posters without any added granualarity!

As for speed, the scanning rate is very quick for 400dpi and less. The software included on the CD-ROm facilitates productive work. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was how powerful, precise and quick the photo negative/slide scanner is! This feature kept me from returning it. It, too has nice editing tools in the software and integrates well with Adobe products.

If I were to buy over again, I would downgrade to the 4400 series. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor for an HP
The ADF on our scanner has failed twice in the year we have owned it. HP sugests we return it for a new one.

It is EXTREMELY slow.

Quality of the images is acceptable. Easy set up.

1-0 out of 5 stars A dreadful experience
Based on web testimonials, I bought this scanner with automatic document feeder specifically to scan a couple thousand photo prints. The scanner and ADF worked perfectly for exactly one day; on the second day the resulting images started coming up smeared and with blotches of ridiculous color (like formless tattoos on people's skin and stains on their clothes). The ONLY appropriate help to be found (in the e-manual or online) advised me to "clean the ADF window"--which of course I did, to no avail whatsoever. I called HP. The representative listened to my complaint and said, "Oh, I don't think you can use the ADF for photos..." I told him that was precisely how it was advertised and the major reason I bought it. After a few minutes on hold, he came back and declared it sounded like a defective ADF. I advised him I wanted a replacement. He ordered it, and took credit card information to ensure I would send back the defective one. More than two weeks went by and no ADF was delivered. I called HP again with my case number and was told by another rep that the replacement ADF order had been canceled; he had no explanation as to why. I told him this: "I want you to ship me a new ADF for this machine *today*, and I want you to pay postage for return of the defective ADF. If not, I will return the entire unit and I will never buy a Hewlett Packard product again." The rep set about making it happen, and finally said it was OK, except that the part was out of stock. So I took the damn'ed thing back to the store and now am back to using my slow old manual flatbed HP without an ADF. All in all, a very disappointing experience with HP.

2-0 out of 5 stars Negative scan with loss of detail and color mismatch
The features sound great. But reality is different. Negative scans look horrible, with loss of detail and color mismatch. Photo scans also show color mismatch. The document auto feeder will usually fail and produce a paper jam. What else can be said? Go for the Epson Perfection 2450.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great All-Purpose Scanner!
I love this scanner! It has every single feature you would want in a scanner especially for the price. Slides, negatives, photos, documents, etc. The feeder is a bonus!

4-0 out of 5 stars No problems.
Feeder works well and image quality is good. Slides and negatives work well. Installed on my Windows XP machine just fine. It has obviously been updated based on the other review. I give it a four only because it is a bit slow for my tastes. ... Read more
