Weighing in at around 2 pounds, Hitachi's VME545LAVP 8mm camcorder offers a wide range of advanced features in a lightweight package. It has a 0.55-inch black-and-white eyepiece viewfinder and a 2.5-inch fold-out/rotatable LCD screen. Zoom capabilities range from 16x optical/32x digital to a special-effect zoom equivalent of 120x (although the special-effect zoom compromises picture quality).

With 0.8 LUX illumination, you can film in light lower than that from a single candle. Many exposure controls come preset, such as auto backlight, auto white balance, and auto shutter, but you do have the option of focusing automatically or manually. Along with the exposure modes, the Hitachi VME545LAVP features a package of built-in special effects including mosaic, mirror, negative-positive, and panoramic shots. You can fade in and out with one of six programmed fades. This model also includes flying erase heads to keep transitions between shots smooth.

Great Family Product / User Friendly
We gambled on this Hitachi package because its description and photographs appeared to fit the FAMILY Vs. Unitied Artists FILMAKER category, seeking a "User Friendly" model. The gamble paid the following dividends. A CamCorder that is light, simple to operate without requiring the 3 eyed camera-person. 1 to film and 2 to consult the owners manual. This model comes with a lo light feature Vs. built in lights on other models. Our lo light filming in both indoor and outdoor settings proved positive with "tru color" imagery without the lamp glare that is common with the built ins. The Autofocus feature will require more attention, as it is very positive to the dead-center subject rule, especially involving indoor moving targets i.e. 5 year old grandsons. One feature not advertised was this CamCorder's 2.5" Flip out screen: its COLOR! The camera bag is attractive and roomy. Tripod is ok, but its a lightweight model. Hitachi has taken a step backwards!
This unit is barely featured enough to call it a hi8 camcorder. I remember when Hitachi was considered a high end manufacturer but this tells me they want to waller with the Samsungs, Daewoo and other low-end quality companies. The best low dollar hi8 comes from Canon with many features. Hitachi needs to step up to where they were and let the others be.

No stereo!
I can't understand how they can call this Hi-8 without a stereo output. Even if the picture is a good as Hi-8, sound is important too! The S-video connector is not compatable with the connector on my capture card. I'm sending mine back! ... Read more

I love it
This is one of the most versatile cams I ever owned. Eventhough
it is big and probably this is the problem with most people
whoe like small and easily carried cams, it is better than any cam I have ever worked with and I won more than 4. It is stable,
it has plenty of goodies to go along, a very nice zoom for its
age and costs much less than similar handy cams. I bouight in
USA when I studied there and my only problem is that I need
now to change NTSC formats to PAL (I am in Europe now) but the
quality of sound and image is superb.
