Amazon.com Product Description

If you're looking for a point-and-shoot, go-anywhere snapshot digital camera, the HP PhotoSmart 435 is a great choice. With its 3.1-megapixel resolution, you'll be able to print enlargements up to 11 x 14 inches. You also get HP's Instant Share Feature, a movie mode with audio, a 16 MB internal memory, and an expansion slot for adding SD and MMC memory cards.

Optics and Resolution
The PhotoSmart 435 features a 3.1-megapixel resolution (effective) that produces images as large as 2048 x 1536 pixels. It offers one low resolution mode: 640 x 480. A fixed-focus camera, the PhotoSmart 435 features a 5x digital zoom.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the PhotoSmart 435 can also record movie clips at 20 frames per second with sound. The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

More Features
With HP's Instant Share feature, you can customize your camera with e-mail aliases and distribution lists of your family and friends. For each picture, you can designate up to 14 destinations, including e-mail addresses, compatible printers, and more.

  • Built-in flash with auto, forced on/off, red-eye reduction, and night modes
  • Shutter speed: 10 seconds to 1/1000 second
  • Exposure: ISO Auto (default), 100, 200, 400
  • White balance: auto
Optional Camera Dock
The PhotoSmart 435 is also compatible with the HP PhotoSmart 8886 Digital Camera Dock, which enables you to easily transfer images to your PC or charge a set of included rechargeable batteries. Cutting down on desktop clutter, this convenient remote-controlled device enables you to transfer image files to your PC, print photos, or even view images on TV--all in one easy step

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored using the internal 16 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. The internal 16 MB memory will store approximately 18 images at the PhotoSmart 435's 3-megapixel better setting (2048 x 1536). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via ultrafast USB 2.0, which means it can be connected to any USB-compatible Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software. When used with USB 1.1 connection, transfer will slow to USB 1.1 rate.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by 2 AA batteries (alkalines included, rechargeables recommended). It measures 4.6 by 2.3 by 1.5 inches and weighs 6.4 ounces (including batteries).

3-0 out of 5 stars Takes Pictures, then Eats Batteries!
The camera works nicely and takes good pictures. Unfortunately, you can only use it for about half an hour before the batteries die. And don't even think about buying the camera dock with the rechargeable batteries... those batteries arrived dead on delivery and HP had no customer service number for me to call and no warranty card or information included. They say they have a 90 day warranty... good luck on getting any help. There must be better companies to buy from. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

You have to love a digital camera with a high level of zoom. Hewlett-Packard's Photosmart 850 offers 8x optical zoom in its relatively compact (for the optical length) lens. The camera itself, however, weighs over a pound. The camera also goes right into its 7x digital after you hit the end of the optical range, letting you seamlessly get closer to the action.

Unfortunately, the autofocus didn't always show us a crisp image on the LCD--the photos would show up sharply, but it was difficult to decide where exactly to line up the shot.

Other than minor issues with the zoom, we're enamored with the 850. Its 4.1-megapixel resolution results in deeply detailed images, while its 2-inch LCD displayed photos more brightly and in much higher quality than other digital camera LCDs. And the camera can record video (complete with audio) in clips of 288 x 216 pixel resolution and up to 60 seconds long. You can even record audio with your still photos to give them more life.

You'll want to spend some extra cash to upgrade the camera, however, as it only ships with a 16 MB Secure Digital media card. The optional docking station makes it easier to transfer images to your PC and also includes rechargeable batteries (the camera comes with four disposable AA batteries).

If you have a compatible HP printer, you can also print directly from the camera--no need to pass images through your PC. Although, if you do send your pictures to your computer, you can use HP's suite of tools, including HP's Instant Share, which lets you automatically send pictures to an e-mail recipient or the Web.

With its depth of resolution, high level of zoom, and versatility, the HP Photosmart 850 is a camera worth considering. --J. Curtis

4-0 out of 5 stars New at digital but not 35mm photography! Lots of info!
I have been using 35mm cameras for 35 years taking pictures of the family, flowers, animals and landscapes so I think I know something about photo taking. I am a digital virgin though!
I shopped around before I purchased the HP-850. I was looking for a 35mm like camera with shutter (time exposures) and F-stop control, lots of zoom, macro ability, flash options (red eye & fill flash), good focusing abilities (low light and spot/averaging options), an easy to use inexpensive battery type and a reasonable price. All were there in the HP-850.
I recently used the camera on a trip to Hawaii where I tried all of it's options except the different white light options.
By purchasing a 110 Power Adapter cord from e-bay I was able to play with the many camera options and controls on my couch to learn the camera. I was also able to view the results and not use any battery power while doing all this.
I found the manual to be just fine. Naturally you have to be versed in 35mm camera use and wording to understand options and how to use them but that wouild be true with any camera.
The NIMH rechargable batteries lasted a long time (100+) photos. I used the power adapter each night to edit the days pictures so I really only used battery power to take photos. I did do some "on the spot" editing.
What I liked, and I liked a lot:
The powerfull zoom and the viewfinder indication (red box) when you transitioned into digital zoom.
The ability of the camera to take indoor pictures without a flash - it's amazing. Night time exposures were a lot of fun. With the amazing cameras natural bility to use natural light 1 - 3 seconds was plenty of shutter delay in all cases.
The flash red eye reduction and fill flash worked great but do take a few seconds to set up. I'm getting faster!
When Editing - the 4x enlarging option allows you to check focus detail over the whole picture. Also the second thought "are you sure" option before erasing a photo is great.

The view finder does not work until you get your face about 2 inches from the camera. This saves battery power.
The shutter can easily be partially depressed for focusing. You do noy easily set off the shutter.
I found the view screen great as a view finder when taking delayed shutter and time exposure photos.
The camera is light and fits my hand very nicely. The controls are easy to access and work. You do not need a tooth pick or pen. Once you learn the options and programs they make sense and are easy to use (I have not figured out the 4 white light options yet well enought to comment on them.
Shop around for a bag. Don't forget to make room for extra batteries and an extra memory disk.
I purchased a battery charger and two sets of NIMH rechargable batteries. I have not regretted it a minute.
What I did not like:
The camera takes some getting used to but then it may be me getting used to digital photography.
The view finder goes black and there is about a 1 - 1/2 (noticable) second delay before the camera takes the pictuer. This makes taking pictures of moving objects (ex = waved breaking or hitting a rock, standing wildlife - they seem to move constantly, people walking or swinging a golf club)a real challenge since you are never really sure what you are going to get and you have to anticipate. Of course you can always review and erase/try again. It also makes long distance shots using a lot of zoom very hard without a camera support of some kind.
My wife, who has problems with a point and shoot, had problems with the focus in low light (set at central area of view finder). She does not understand the need to aim the camera onto the focal point of the photo and 1/2 press the shutter button to set focus. She is smart so it would probably help if I spent some time a explained it to her.
The 16mb disk that comes with the camera is basically worthless as are the four batteries they provide.
When asking others (waiters, bus boys) to use the camera the view finder going black, the shutter delay (1 second about) and 1/2 shutter button focus really throws them. I usually had them take 3 pictures then edited for the best. It helped to tell them what to expect first off and of course thier patience and ability to listen/learn are factors.

5-0 out of 5 stars great features for less price
I bought this camera for it's 8X optical zoom. This one produces good quality pictures and the video capturing is okay. Probably you need to avoid zooming while capturing video clips. It's definitely not for people who are looking for point and shoot camera. It takes a while to get used to shutter speed. The digital zoom is an added feature but not exciting. The camera comes with 16mb SD card , it should be upgraded to either 128mb or 256mb cards. This one eats batteries hence rechargeble batteries are must. The additional accesories needed are AC adapter and S-Video cable. Other than price of the camera you need to spend about 100-150 USD to get it complete. Still it's worth the expenses compared to other branded camera's with simillar features.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take your time.
I've had this camera now for over a year and it is awesome. First of all to the people complaining about the battery life, you must have a faulty unit because my batteries last forever. I am always taking pictures and very rarely have to change batteries. I spent 4 days in Vegas and the Grand Canyon last year and took over 600 pictures and never even had to replace the batteries and that was also with constantly looking at the pictures on the screen and downloading them to my laptop without using a power adaptor. The pictures I have taken are awesome but you need to take the time to learn the camera options. For example you need to learn when to use the flash or change the shutter speed to get good shots. Its not complicated but most people don't bother to do this and then complain about poor pictures. Its your own fault. I even had a professional photographist complement pictures I have taken with this camera. The zoom is awesome. I have taken pictures of things over 1500 feet away and they look crystal clear. If you take your time and learn to use the many features of the camera you will be extremely happy with the results.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete tease!Takes spectacular photos; operates deplorably
This camera when it works takes spectacular photographs. Superior quality. However, this camera's reliability in terms of operation is awful. It burns through batteries as if they were candy. I always have had to have extra batteries on hand. More significantly, the camera refuses to turn on at times (even with fresh batteries). It also refuses to retract its lenses when turned off sometimes as well. I am completely frustrated with this camera. It now refuses to work at all despite seemingly operating correctly. The quality of this product surprised me given my previous complete satisfaction with other HP products.

4-0 out of 5 stars New digital photographer
This is my first digital camera. I've had the camera for approximately 8 months. I have used it on two vacations and for family photo opportunities. So far I am very pleased with the camera and it's many functions. I could go on about all the good things but you, reading this, expect those things.
I have four things that I am having trouble adapting to after using a 35mm film camera for years.
1 - The screen going black and the delay in the shutter action really makes it difficult or almost impossible to take action shots. Even taking a standing animal or bird becomes hard because they move unpredictably. You can anticipate, and I'm getting better at that, but to visually follow a subject and take action pictures is impossible.
2 - The lense is super untill you get to the digital only point and then things get grainy. I now never use the digital section of the lense.
3 - It would really be nice to be able to manually focus. You can't.
4 - I would really like to put a polarizing lense on the camera but this is not easy to do and keep the "camera off" dimensions of the camera. Maybe HP has an adapter that will allow me to do this but "Camera World" in Portland did not know of any. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great investment
I just hooked up my CD burner and after some initial configuration issues (not any fault of the burner, mind you), I've been having a ball. The drive is perfect for me, as I have been building a web site, and all of the pictures that I had on my hard drive or on Zip disks are quickly and easily transferred to a CD-RW. The CD is much more reliable for long-term storage also, unlike normal floppies or Zip disks.

Amazon.com Review

The HP PhotoSmart 812 is a well-specified 4-megapixel digital camera with a Pentax 3x optical zoom lens. It's designed as a simple-to-use point-and-shoot replacement, and comes in a compact case with silver finish. While lacking any dramatic aesthetic impact, it does possess neat lines and has an overall feel of a well-constructed camera.

The controls on the HP 812 are straightforward. A power button is accompanied by a shutter button on the top of the camera, the latter surrounded by a mode-select wheel. This enables you to choose between video mode with audio, a time-lapse mode, or straight camera mode. On the back you find zoom controls, located where your right thumb naturally sits. The 3x optical zoom is complemented by a digital zoom to provide 21x total magnification. However, quality suffers when moving to the digital zoom, as with any digital camera.

The menus found via the LCD are straightforward to navigate. You can amend the quality of pictures taken, from one to four stars, with the latter providing 4-megapixel images suitable for print enlargements.

The image quality produced by the PhotoSmart 812 is impressive by typical digital camera standards. However, when stacked against competing 4-megapixel models it doesn't compare favorably. The depth of field is quite shallow, with only small areas of the picture in focus. The autofocus also struggles in low light. This said, it is worth remembering that other 4-megapixel cameras are often considerably more expensive than the 812.

The HP 812 is designed purely for ease of use and you can configure your images while on the camera to print or e-mail, thanks to the Instant Share technology. This is best served when used in conjunction with the HP camera dock, which is not supplied. This separately available dock enables you to easily share pictures and charges your camera batteries at the same time.

The batteries supplied with the camera are nonrechargeable lithium-ion, which have a decent lifespan. The camera will also take standard AAs in an emergency, but you'll only get limited life out of these--around five minutes before the LCD powers down. We recommend getting a set of rechargeables, like those supplied with the camera dock.

The HP 812 uses a Secure Digital (SD) card memory for image storage and is supplied with a 16 MB card. More memory will be needed, as the supplied card will only store five pictures at the highest quality. The camera will also take MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory, which is cheaper than SD.

The HP PhotoSmart 812 delivers what it promises, and provides an affordable compact point-and-shoot that anyone can use and take decent pictures with, which, thanks to the resolution, can be printed at large sizes. It will however, struggle to win over any photography enthusiasts with its dearth of manual controls. --Nick Baxter

Pros:

  • Affordable point-and-shoot 4-megapixel camera
  • Very easy to use and download to your computer
  • Good choice for beginners who desire 11-by-14-inch photo prints

Cons:

  • Dearth of manual controls
  • HP camera dock not included, but recommended for easy photo transfer

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW...WHAT A PICTURE !!!
I take a lot of pictures! I have 30 or so picture albums on line on Webshots. These are by far the best pictures I've ever seen. When you enlarge the picture the details stay sharp and focused! It's light enough to keep in my shirt pocket. The zoom is outstanding. The docking station makes recharging and downloading a snap! I would like a car charger. I have not looked for one yet, but I'm sure there is one out there somewhere. This little puppy even makes big movies! It's a work-horse in a small package. It is very easy to learn how to use. I never even opened the manual that came with it. You will love this camera!

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent- But only for outdoor still pictures!
I Previously owned the HP Photosmart 320, a decent 2 MP camera. I am somewhat dissapointed with the Photosmart 812. Anyone buying the PS 812 should be aware that there is a one to two second delay between the time that the shutter button is fully depressed untill the picture is actually taken. I've gotten tons of shots of the back of my baby's head- She'd turn by the time the camera actually took the picture! The images taken indoors are slightly off color and faded compared to my other cameras- seems to be the way the flash reflects off objects. The movie mode with sound is decent, and the outdoor pictures are fairly sharp. Even so the camera doesn't do that great of a job focusing. as mentioned in the other posts, the 812 is powered by 2 AA batteries, so even two NIMH rechargeables don't last more than 40 shots or a few minutes f movie mode. HP mentions in the manual that you must conserve the batteries, but many of the other companies out there get 300 to 800 shots on their baterries, so the 812 really cant be considered acceptable. Overall I'm thiking of switching to a Cannon.
The Cannon line of cameras seem to actually take a picture when you click- and they don't have a 4-5 second delay between shots while the previous picture loads to memory. Plus theres no nedd to chage the batteries every few pictures. HP definitely needs to get their act together.

1-0 out of 5 stars This camera cannot recharge its own batteries
Well I have this photosmart 812 camera and a C8881a dock. I thought it would be a good combo since it came with two sets of batteries and easy connectivity to my computer. Seems to have nice menu's and iPhoto recognizes the camera right away. Windows XP brings it right away as well in drive mode.

The batteries that came with the camera will not charge. According to HP the camera will not charge if the batteries less than 1.2v in them. Well of course new batteries out of the box will have less than 1.2v in them!!! HP says to upgrade the firmware on the camera which will fix this issue, but it still does not work! Another annoying thing is that you need to reset the date everytime you take the batteries out, or in this case whenever you unhook the camera from the dock since the batteries never charge!

5-0 out of 5 stars 812 and hps support packages
I have the hp photosmart 812 and as an artist have injoyed the camera ,I use it to document my work as well as others., and are very impressed with the photos. I purchased one of hp service packs for cameras from $299.00-$499.00 , I will tell you that it was the best investment I made, I droped my camera and with a phone call it was replaced the next day, This product and its support from hp are worth it. lens and a adaptor can be purchased to add on to this camera,a catolog is inclosed in the box from which to purchase . 4-0 out of 5 stars M820e Does the job for me
My M820e has functioned well for me. I'm running on Wind-NT 4.0.
My son uses it on his laptop running Wind-98. I bought my
daughter one for her laptop which is running Wind-2000. Note that you have to download a revised driver for Wind-2000 from
the HP web page. Not clear why other reviewer didn't download
a driver for his Wind-2000 o/s. HP web page says this is
required.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Product
I don't know if you can attribute the poor quality to the products prior treatment, or if it is the new driver that needs to be installed to run the thing w/ windows 2000, or if the product just (stinks) but I can tell you one thing....I would not buy it again if someone paid me!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get the W2K drivers..
A word of caution, make sure you download the windows 2000patch ...

Installing the drivers from the HP CD will cause W2K not to loadagain... (blue stop screen, not even letting to load in safe mode..)

Thankfully Windows 2000 self-repairs, as soon as you put in the W2K install CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for laptop owners...
This CD-RW drive is excellent for anyone who has a laptop or a PC with a PC card drive. If you have no room for one of those bulky external CD-RW drives that are as big as the internal ones (with casing), if you don't want to pay near $500 dollars for an external CD-RW drive that is this small and basically does the same things, or if you simply have a leptop that doesn't have a cd-rom drive and want a model that will do everything then this model is the best choice. Hey it's the best choice by far.

From the time the package came to my door to the time I opened it up to the time I got finished setting it up and recording CDs it had been only 15 minutes... The software that comes along with the drive s excellent although I wish that it would have allowed me to convert MP3s to Wav files for recording (you'll need your own MP3 decoder like winamp), but it'll record CD files onto WAVs (which I recommend for CD recording since recording straight from the CD will lead to skipping).

I've heard reviews of other external CD-RW drives that are this compact, have the same speeds (20x read, 4x CD-R and 4x CD-RW) and only one other model (the Pocket Rocket) has had a better review but only for the fact that it comes with a rechargeable battery, but when I looked at its price of $500 I gasped. Paying a sub $400 price for this model is much better than paying $150 more for a model in which the only extra thing is a battery. If youre willing to forgo the battery then this model will be your best bet. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Product ¿ With a Few Minor Drawbacks
Installation of this drive was quick and painless, which every step well-documented and all of the components you need available right in the box. The software installation presented no problems either, so I had everything set up and running in under half an hour.

After two weeks of experimenting with the drive, I have been very impressed with both performance and reliability. Some users have reported problems with writing at 10x speed and receiving constant "buffer underrun" errors, but I have not experienced either of these issues. Data, audio, and video CDs have all been created without any flaws, and I have found nothing whatsoever to complain about in terms of the drive's writing ability.

The software set which ships with the drive is exceptional, but I was disappointed to find that version 3.02 of Adaptec Easy CD Creator was bundled as opposed to the more feature-rich version 4.x. This isn't a major gripe, but audio enthusiasts will likely appreciate the automatic conversion of .mp3 files in the newer version. An upgrade is available ... but having the 4.x version right in the box would have been appreciated.

Another caution to music lovers is the fact that this drive does not support CD-Text, which means that you won't be able to store the artist and title information for each track on your CD-Rs. Again, this is a minor complaint, but most newer CD players support CD-Text, and those who are looking at purchasing this drive primarily for audio uses may find the lack of support to be a drawback.

So overall, if you're in search of a reliable all-purpose CD-R/RW drive, I would highly recommend the 9310i, but if you're primarily interested in creating your own music CDs, you may want to look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great drive for the money
Got burned buying the first 2x HP writer back when this was relatively new technology. It made more coasters than CD's. This one, I'm happy to say, makes up for the former. Yes, it makes CD's and fast too! I don't think people will be able to tell the difference between 10 or 20x. It almost takes longer to start the burning process than the actual burning.

The feature that sets this apart most, however, is their Simple Backup program. As an Easy CD Creator user, I've been increasingly frustrated that they continue to ignore the obvious need to back up a hard drive. HP's program solves that problem quickly and efficiently with their program, it even spans across multiple CD's for you packrats.

I ran into a slight problem originally installing their software (common for Microsoft plug and PRAY users). Popped off a note to tech support and got a response in a week. Not fabulous response time, but probably as good or better as any other company. All I needed to do was a clean boot to get rid of all the additional junk loading up at startup. Solved the problem.

Only negative - they include an old 3.0 version of Easy CD Creator. If you have 4.0 you can uninstall theirs and install 4.0 into the same directory and it will work seamlessly with their other programs.

One thing to check out before buying is the new "burn-proof" technology or something similarly named that Sanyo has developed and is starting to appear in Plextor CD writers as of the time of this review. So far the reviews have been really positive and you may want to spend the extra cash for the technology. Otherwise this is the best writer at this price level (I paid 30% more just two months ago - man I hate that!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, fast and HP reliable.
No more japanesse junk for me, I decided to go back to HP and trow away my yamaha, just kept making bad burns at high speeds. With this one I have yet to have a bad cd. Very quiet and accurate, like it a lot. My yamah during warranty failed and no one even the distributor would give me a replacement. Just take it for fixing. DONT THINK SO, get me a new one or forget it Yamaha.
This HP is being burning since July and specially like the cool ventilation registers makes it look like a Hot Rod burner of some sort.
My cousin had his for over 6 years (a HP 4x2x12x ) and he recommended it to me. He was right it is plain good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medium Burner
I got this burner about a year ago. At that time it was the fastest and seemed to be the best. Now it is somewhat outdated. The programs are old. I have messed up so many times trying to copy cds becasue of "buffer underuns". Considering data and making you own original cds, it is great. If you are considering buying a burner, go for some of the newer ones, that are faster but also because they have solved all those problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good hardware, bad softwear...
This is a good burner overall; it is fast and easy to install. The only problem is the softwear that comes with it; its basic, weak, user-unfriendly, and has some bugs. After making two CD copies the computer crashes and you have to restart it; this happens every time. Making data CD's can be a hassle since you have to save layouts for every CD that you make otherwise the CD is not recognized. The help and tutorial section of the softwear is no help at all. If you get the burner, you better do you homework and learn all there is about burners, CD's and how it all works. Also you should buy a few extra CD's to practice on. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't let low reviews fool you
This is a great entry level digital camera. The pictures look good, even on the lowest quality setting. In response to the people who say the pictures are too dark, use some "photo-sense" and don't shoot into unlit corners. Or, simply force the flash option.

I particularly enjoy the large photo capacity. One the low setting the camera can hold 110+ pictures. If you find the need to take pictures on the maximum quality setting, an expandable memory card is recommended.

The only thing keeping me from awarding the 5th star is the fact that the AC adapter is sold separately, which is necessary if you plan to use the camera to recharge batteries. If you own a charger, then it's a moot point.

Let me say again for clarity, this is a great entry level camera. The photography enthusiast may not be won over, but for shooting birthday parties, holiday gatherings, and Jimmy's T-ball game, this camera is a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Reccomend It
After shopping around long and hard, I finally decided on the HP 612. I think my biggest reason for choosing it was the optical zoom. Which by the way, works quite well.

No one ever seems to talk about picture quality in reviews. Well I'm going to. The pictures as they come straight out of the camera are a little bit grainy. But it comes with ACD photo software, and all you have to do is click enhance, despeckle, and adjust your level, and it looks better than a lot of point and shoot 35mm cameras. It captures skin tones very well, it captures the complex greens in outdoor settings, and the lighting is very accurate. I'm very pleased with the quality of the photos after playing with them in the software.

It has a very nice preview screen, as most digital cameras now do, and a very simple interface. Its somewhat bulky, but still very comfortable to use. And you just don't find optical zoom in this price range. Overall, I think I made the best decision for my price range and needs, and I highly reccomend this camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont start with this camera, you will hate all others
Have a very bad experience with this camera,
-never think about having good picture using the medim and high quality options
-never expect an indoor good quality
-battery eater
-sometimes you have to manually push lens if it stop moving

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera for beginners
I got this camera a year ago. I needed a light-weight, point-and-shoot camera that I can take with me everywhere without bothering to carry a big case, lenses, films and all the other stuff. Having excellent experience with other HP products, I chose a HP and I never regreted that (I already took more than 9,000 (nine thousand) photos since I got it... and is still working! ;) )

The pictures it takes don't even dream of being "pro" ones, but it has gorgeous colour tones (comparing to other cameras in this price range) and does great clear pictures in day-light (it is, after all, a ISO100 equivalent camera, so don't expect it to give you too sharp pictures for dark rooms, although the flash does help a bit. In darker areas, the pictures came out a bit grainy, and if it's really dark, they come out blueish - a thing that can be repaired in PhotoShop and... it's ok, as it's only doing the "blue" thing in very low light).

I use the camera with an extra CompactFlash of 128MB (it can hold 138 pictures taken at maximum quality), and I use a pack of Kodak rechargeable batteries of 1800MAH which drain after about 150-170 high quality pictures. If you keep the window open too much of the time, the battery life may go down 20-30 pictures. I would say this is a great battery life for a digi cam! For those who cry that this camera is a battery drainer - try other cameras! :) Anyone who thinks of buying a digital camera should consider buying a recharger with batteries.

Downloading: easy (through the HP software - just plug in the USB cord and off you go!), fast(!), and the HP printing software provided with the camera can help a beginner or the rushy person to quickly enhance the brightness and the tones of a photo taken in too lower light.

Printing: I finally decided to print a couple of the photos I took woth my HP 612, and went to my photolab (Photo 1-2-3, Toronto) and the 4x6 pictures came out at the SAME quality as the ones on a ISO200 film taken with my SLR Canon EOS. This is great! Anyway, I don't think I would go bigger than 5x7, though it says on the camera that you can go up to 8x10 :)
Should I say that my Hp deskjet 3820 gets the best of those pictures too? :) I think HP will thank me for my review here, but it is true. :)

If you are a beginner or you just need a camera to carry with you practically everywhere, this is the one: you've got quality, good colours, optical zoom, easy shooting, fast downloading, and all for the lowest price you can find!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad! Good Seller Should buy from him again... prob will
I bought a camera from him and i gave it a 4 because the cam says 2.31 megapixels and the cam i had was 2.1 megapixel also from hp and the thing is that this cam is not performing 2.31 megapixel i am sure of it.. the pics from the 2.1 cam was better than the one i just bought from him *refurbished* 2.31.... anyways i will not return it because I woudn't want to wait an other week ... if you give me a chance i like to return it and get the one i had before which got stolen .. it's the one before this one so email me to yamelmontero@hotmail.com and let me know the price is not far apart less than 20 dollars but this one cost more so it's ok... bye. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner
I've used this scanner on both '98 and ME. It works great. I never had any problems with it. It scans nice, and it has a preview before the actual scan to allow one to make specific choices for that particular scan.

1-0 out of 5 stars USB interface does not work with WinXP
HP's patch for WinXP killed the USB interface and HP was not willing to fix the root problem. Have seen many people reporting the same problem on HP's user forum. At least 20 complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau but HP seem to ignore most of them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent camera for the price
I recentley purchased this camera from target. I now wish I had purchased it from target.com, due to the $ 50 mail-in rebate. But, anyways the camera is a solid performer, I purchased it for taking basic everyday pictures. The 3.2 megapixels are more than enough for my photos. The zoom is the reason I bought it (15 x total zoom). I am happy with it overall. The uploading process is fairly easy too. If you plan on purchasing this camera, be sure to buy good batteries (NiMh) and a charger. You will be set to take pictures for a long time. The battery cover is very flimsy so be careful there, so you may want to buy a camera case. The internal memory is allright, but dont rely on it to store all your pictures. I also purchased the 64mb memory card and at the lowest quality you can take over 400 pictures with the card. The video mode is suprisingly decent, but don't expect to shoot whole concerts. Overall, for the price its a decent camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1800 photos in 3 months
I am an art student and I need quick shots for reference, inspiration, actual graphic work, and documentation of my other work. I have had this camera 3 months and have taken over 1800 pictures and video and I've been very pleased with it. I take it everywhere with me. It's proved itself durable.

If you invest in this camera buy rechargable batteries and extra memory. Plan on this with ANY digital or you will be unhappy with the result. I have used three other digital cameras of different MB capabilities and by different makers...the same is true with them.

This camera has a top display that is not on any other camera in this price range. Very easy to change flash/mode/quality settings without turning on back screen. A definate plus. Saves battery and time.

This camera is a little slow but it is not anything a little patience can not handle. It just takes a little getting used to. There is a setting to take several pictures quickly. I have not had the need to use this feature, but, it may help with those hard to catch quick moments if the need arrises.

The camera is also quicker if the flash is not on. Pictures do turn out better without flash and when not applicable I advise turning it off.

The colors on this camera are GORGEOUS. They are very vibrant and bright. I advise having a photoediting program however with any digital for even BETTER pictures. A small adjustment may be all the difference you need to make a picture that's too dark and useless to the best picture you took all day. Get the best out of your digital!

There are better cameras, but be prepared to pay. This is a great camera for what it is and for the money. Take it from someone whose in the visual field. Some reviewers seem very biased about this camera. Again be prepared to buy rechargable batteries and additional memory with ANY digital camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good job, HP!
I bought this camera from Target. It is a great camera. My only peeve is that the battery door is weak, and it broke while inserting batteries. I called HP and they promptly replaced the camera. I got my replacement in less than 2 days!! As far as power consumption goes, I don't use the LCD display at all. I also use NiMH rechargables, and I get about 65 pictures each charge. I use the optical zoom sparingly and transfer pictures to my computer about 3 times. I best feature about this camera is that it has a little display on the top, where you can adjust picture quality, mode and flash options. That, I guess saves a lot of battery power. All in all, a great product and I am really happy with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures fast
For those of you having problems with the batteries... We finally bought more expensive, non rechargeable batteries. Otherwise you could only take about 5 pictures, and it took FOREVER to save them. Try Energizer Litium. They worked great right up until the time someone stole it!

2-0 out of 5 stars don't get it!!!!
Don't waste the money on this camera. Pictures are great but the baterrie life is terrible...At first I didn't mind replacing the batteries because I got the rechargeable pack but things haven't changed!!! I called HP on this problem the gentalman on the phone didn't understand the problem, he told me to use photo lithium batteries I bought a pair hoping this would cure the problem but nope same old batterie sucker!!!! ... Amazon.com Review

Looking for a good basic scanner for home or small office use? The Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6350Cse professional scanner is a strong performer and is easy to set up, so you will be scanning in no time.

The ScanJet 6350Cse is a solid basic scanner that more than adequately fills a useful range of needs. Setup and installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized quick installation poster was easy to read and simple to follow. If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the coach feature (part of the extensive online help system) or other online help, since the 6350Cse doesn't include a printed user's guide. You can also use the internal coach to help scan your work after a quick but thorough tutorial. (It took us only 10 minutes to run through all the steps.)

In our tests, the scanner required a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half. After warm-up, we quickly reproduced flat images and slides using several different preset dpi settings. The scanner also has an automatic feeder for scanning multiple flat documents or images, which we found particularly useful. With the feeder attached, the scanner can handle up to five scans per minute. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, but it produces vivid scans.

This is a fairly effortless scanner that can meet a wide range of needs. Whether paired with an ink-jet or laser printer, you will get crisp, clear scanned images. You can also fax scans or attach them to an e-mail with the click of a button. --David Greenberger

Pros:

  • Fast, easy setup
  • Can handle a full range of originals

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the HP name
This scanner has many good points, but doesn't live up to the HP name. It warms up slowly, scans slowly, and the manual slide mechanism on the 6390 version is a pain. I bought it to support a busy customer reception area, and it just isn't up to the job. Being a relatively expensive scanner, and an HP, I expected more.

The SCSI interface is VERY nice, and using it reduces the time per scan considerably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and quality scanner!
I have this scanner for more than a 1.5 years now. I have choosen it because it's HP, and for the document feeder (there is no slide adapter with the 6350, it is bundeled with the 6390).

What I did not like is the miss of a printed manual (only on CD-rom) and the lack of an extensive on-line help (the help is very brief)! The 5 buttons on the scanner is just a joke for me, never used - I always wanted to make a scan/copy with other settings than the defaults. I have also configured the scanner to be used over our netwrok, whcich does not have much sense to me, but it works without problem.

The scanner have a SCSI-II interface, which let's it transfer data to the computer as fas as it reads from the glass. The document feeder is very useful, especially when making photo copies (the photo copy utility is very useful) or whith OCR through big quantities. The control software is really good too, let's you take control of all settings, no cut down.

I can recommend this scanner for all serious soho users!

3-0 out of 5 stars Requires Minor Quality Tweaks
I did not purchase my 6350 at Amazon, but did so elsewhere. I have lived with this scanner for 2 months now. Here are my thoughts on this product. Note that the 3-stars and title I give this product are slightly misleading. The scanning quality is exceptional. The automatic document feeder (ADF) is a huge plus, and convenience. The software package included is alright. The setup and connections were no problems at all. With minor tweaking of this product, HP could really make it a scanner that will get it 5-stars in every category. Consider the following: 1. The scanner does not include faxing software, or at least I could not find any. This is a minor issue, however.... 2. The scanner optical "glass" surface had smudge marks and foggy spots, right out of the box. Perhaps better quality control/assurance practices at HP will fix this. Items with such obvious defects should never leave the manufacturing facility. Note that the average user cannot clean the underside of the scanner "glass". Hp does not recommend this for the 6350. 3. HP should have packaged the standard document cover with this unit as well. In cases where the ADF is required to be removed for repairs, the standard top could easily be put on. 4. The construction and design of the unit is not conducive to keeping the interior dust free. I state this as the chassis has several visible openings, that could introduce dust, fibres into the inside of the scanner. Perhaps HP designed it this way for ventilation and dessipation of built up heat from the unit. HP could perhaps better the design in future versions of this model. Since the 6300 is the identical model without the ADF, this fact applies to it as well, and other similar HP models too. In summary, I am quite pleased with this product. It does have the potential to be a GREAT product with a little more effort on HP's part. Sincerely, aba4430

There seems to be an over emphasis on business equipment and adult toys when it comes to computers these days. I think it is important to remember that an entire generation is being raised in the computer age. Many children are far more sophisticated in their abilities than traditional at home products are designed and targeted towards.

A perfect example of what a home system should have is the HP ScanJet 6350Cse. Here is a product that not only provides mom and dad what they need for work, but, also provides the children a high quality alternative for school projects that will knock the teacher's socks off. All this and it still won't break the bank.

From the moment you open package you will see the quality of the product. Using it only increases the pleasure. The scan quality is crisp, sharp and incredibly fast. The ability to quickly move from medium to medium is fantastic. If you use your computer for faxing the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is an absolute life saver, and the more you use the ADF the more you will appreciate having it.

Personally, I recommend getting the SCSI card and cable, an optional accessory. It will increase your scanning speed and even sharpen your scanning ability. While the USB connection is more than adequate, the SCSI card is that much better and brings out the full capabilities of the unit.

Scanning is really an essential capability these days. From all in one printers and separate fax machines, to expensive high end units it is easy to spend more on acquiring the abilities the 6350 series offer and still not get the consistent quality. The software package is more than adequate and actually offers some nice versatility compared to other packages that come standard with other units. This is one investment that will not become obsolete as soon as you open the package. You will definitely appreciate the quality of your choice.

I have always liked HP products. Unfortunately they have started putting the customer second.

A friend and I both received this product for Christmas and now I wish I did more research before asking for this particular product.

First, we both had problems installing the scanner. The installation turned out to be the easy problem to solve. The hard part was finding the support number. It seems that they intentionaly made it difficult to find. Once you find the number you will notice that it is a long distance number, which means it will show up on your phone bill. You will also spend an average of 30 min. per call. Therefore, my first complaint is that the customer service is very bad.

Second, the slide attachment is a joke. It does not work. If you are thinking about buying this because it has a slide attachment, which I was, then do not even consider this product.

On the other hand, the flatbed scanner and the paper feeder do work well. If I had known what I know now about this scanner, I would not have bought, or asked, for it. ... Read more
