This printer is so easy to use. Just plug it in, add paper, insert the smartmedia, compact flash, or memory stick into the appropriate slot, select the number of the photo you want to print, press the print button and watch a beautiful photo emerge from the printer. It weighs only 3 pounds and can be easily transported anywhere. I take it on vacation with me (in a soft sided, padded lunch box) and surprise my friends with instant copies of photos. The are only a few drawbacks for this printer. First, photo paper and ink cartridges cost a lot so your photos will not be cheaper than outside processing. I try to purchase in larger quantities to reduce the cost and I use cheaper paper for less important prints. The second drawback is the inability to view the photo on the printer prior to printing. You'll have to jot down the photo's number from your camera screen. And, of course you can't crop or modify your prints on this printer, but that's not really different from developing photos at the store. As for durability, as I said, I've had this printer for almost a year, have taken it everywhere, printed hundreds of photos and never had the slightest problem. It's a great little printer!

Battery Life: The only time this camera works as it should (i.e., flash charges in a reasonable time, LCD can be used, etc.) is when used with superior (read "expensive") batteries. There are no rechargeable power options, and when sending photos to your PC, do not attempt to use any power cord but the one HP sells (for a hefty price) or else you run the very real risk of frying the camera. Design/Ergonomics: The camera's design is very poorly executed. It is difficult to hold the camera steadily without placing your fingers over the lens; consequently one is forced to hold the camera in an awkward way. The viewfinder is not well aligned, and has no depth (i.e., your view out the viewfinder can change a good deal as you slide your eye from one side to the other). Finally, the trigger button has a poor feeling--it's requires that you press down too long. Flash Charging: As noted above, with anything but the best batteries, the flash will take a ridiculous amount of time to charge up: upto 25 or 30 seconds. I've missed many a photographic opportunities waiting for the flash to warm up. Furthermore the camera's default setting upon powering on is with the flash enabled, and changing that setting takes several seconds too. Images: This camera does produce good images in most light (although it tends to overplay reds in low light, and underplay reds outdoors). However the time required to process an image between one snapshot and the next is sometimes somewhat slow. Price: Price is the only real strong point for this unit. In retrospect I would have opted up for something more, especially considering that the price of digital cameras seems to be dropping $50 or so every six months.
There are two ways to delete pictures from the CF card. You can use the camera itself, or you can use your PC when you have the camera connected. The bug comes into play if you use your PC to delete pictures - you run the risk of "toasting" the camera's firmware. "Toasting" sounds bad, doesn't it? It is indeed very bad - the cost of repairing a "toasted" camera is much greater than the original price of the camera. (Meaning greater than the price of the camera when it was sold new two years ago.) Cameras under the service warranty are simply replaced, but if the service warranty has expired or is void, the customer must pay. This is a well-known defect; in fact, it is one of the most-discussed problems involving the HP 215 on HP's "Support Forums." The original post dates back to September 19, 2001. I was fortunate; my camera was still under warranty when it broke. I had an extremely difficult time with HP customer service, but eventually I did convince them to send a replacement. The replacement camera is adequate, but that's about it. The on/off switch is poorly designed. It takes a delicate touch to properly turn the camera off, and I've lost count of the number of times I've accidentally left it on and returned to find the batteries dead. The focus & shoot function is aggravating - to "focus" you must gently depress the button half way, and then you must wait for a signal before you can actually take the picture. Judging the camera functioning as it was designed, I'd have given it 2 1/2 stars. With the software bug and HP's lousy customer service added in, it really doesn't deserve any stars at all!

With the HP Photosmart 935, I feel that HP has vindicated the trust I have always felt for their products. While not perfect, and in fact flawed in a very few places, the HP Photosmart 935 is a great camera, one I would happy replace my aging Kodak with. The HP Photosmart 935 is a 36-bit 5.3 -megapixel digital camera sporting 3x optical zoom lens, using a 7.6MM - 22.8MM Pentax Zoom lens. It also has 7x Digital zoom, which for any serious picture taker or photographer knows to avoid like the plague. (Digital zoom is worthless if you want quality pictures.) The 1.5 inch backlit LED (521x218 pixel) digital viewfinder is remarkable in its clarity, but suffers from the same ailment most viewfinders on digital cameras does, which is blurry and hard to view from any angle except right behind the unit. Not a criticism of the 935, but simply pointing out the need for better LCD's in all digital cameras. The controls are easy to use, in both settings and operation. Too many cameras try to pack as much controls as they can on the top and back on their digital cameras, and while there are quite a few on the 935, all buttons and controls are easy to use and in appropriate spots, rather than a hodgepodge of tiny buttons clustered together. Kudos to HP for understanding that a degree in engineering should not be needed to simply change shutter speed, or even turn on/off the viewfinder to save battery life. Speaking of battery life, I found that the HP Photosmart 935 goes through them like there is no tomorrow. A brand-new set of Duracell batteries (the 935 uses two AA for power) only lasted for fifty pictures before running too low to allow the viewfinder to work. While battery life can be prolonged simply by not using the viewfinder, getting close to 250 pictures before needing a battery change, I found that the 935 still used up batteries faster than any of the previous digital cameras I have used. I do applaud HP for using standard AA batteries rather than the more expensive, and harder to find, CR-V3 variety, power consumption may be an issue. Look for rechargeable batteries for this unit.
I bought the HP 935 just a few weeks ago and I love it. It is simple to use, but at the same time takes great pics! I also bought the docking bay and it makes it very easy to upload / print / edit pics. The only complaint I have is the fact that you can only take pictures in 1mp or 5mp. There is no way to take 2mp,3mp or 4mp pictures. That doesn't really bother me, but it is a small disadvantage. For the money this is a great buy. As far as accessorys go get some NiMH batterys, some extra SD cards, the camera dock and plenty of ink and photo paper! You are going to be printing beautiful photos right away!
It's a nice camera, but 2 1800 mah cells last about 20 Hard to believe that HP would produce such a thing. I'm Then again, it might be defective. Of course, for $50, you can buy an AC pack that you can take with you on a long expedition Good lord, how could a company drop the ball so wonderfully???? Jerry O'Dell ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description Automatic two-sided printing meets the approval of both efficiency experts and environmentalists, while the four separate print cartridges lower consumable cost buy only requiring you to replace what gets used. Easily networked with multiple workstations, the 1100D makes use of both USB and parallel connections. HP includes a one-year warranty including phone tech support. What's in the Box Features Reviews (6)
Later, I plan on purchasing a separate printer for just color photos (dedicated printers are the best way to go). For now, this one does just fine for the price.
I love the two paper trays - a luxury to which I'm unaccustomed from other inkjet models. I store our organization's letterhead in one tray and plain paper in the other. You switch back and forth between the trays by clicking on "Properties" from the Print Menu that is revealed after clicking on "Print". The option of duplex printing (printing on both sides) is also standard on the printer using the same procedure referenced above. The printer comes with 4 separate high capacity print heads and 4 separate ink cartridges, one each for black, magenta, yellow, and cyan. This allows you to replace only what is needed. I saw the reference to the print heads below. They have a capacity life and are only replaced when worn out. From the web, I found that the black print head needs replacing after 16,000 pages and the other three (magenta, yellow, cyan) after 24,000 pages. You'll go through a lot ink cartridges before the print heads need replacing. When that happens, the print heads are no more expensive than a standard ink cartridge. I am highly satisfied with this printer. Again, it all depends on how one intends to use it. For business and home use: printing correspondence, presentation slides, spreadsheets, webpages and web quality graphics, I find this an exceptional product with good printing speed. Of course, that's why it's marketed using the name HP 1100 "BUSINESS" inkjet. If you're into photography, you might look elsewhere.
Around this price range you can get either a really low-end laser printer or a higher-end inkjet. I was considering both options and finally decided I'd like to have something from the mid-to-upper end of the technology's available lineup rather than one from the bottom of the barrel. I am quite satisfied with the unit so far; but because I haven't printed thousands of pages yet, consider this review a bit preliminary. Setup is not very difficult, but if you've never set up this kind of hardware before, it might seem a bit dismaying. There are a lot of tape strips to remove, a somewhat unusual fold-out clamp to hold the printheads in place, and not-all-that-clearly-marked internal foam block to remove. The wordless poster that comes with the unit is adequate, although some of the drawings are not very clear, and the larger paper tray shown on the poster did not come with my version (the 1100d). It is available as a separate option, but I probably won't bother; you might want one if the standard 150-sheet tray sounds inadequate. If you've set up an inkjet before it should not be difficult. This printer seems to have an optical sensor it can use to calibrate itself -- you can watch as a little light illuminates the test page it is printing -- and it seems to have done a good job! I was pleasantly surprised. I did wind up reinserting the black printhead more firmly to try to correct some lightness and banding visible on the test page. It seems to have done the trick -- or maybe it is just "broken in" after a few pages -- and I'm quite satisfied with the print quality. Driver selection was automatic, and when I plugged in the USB cable and opened MacOS X 10.3's Printer Setup Utility, it had already chosen the driver. I never actually inserted the driver CD. That's actually more due to Apple than to HP, but I was impressed anyway. This inkjet is also unusual because it has a duplexing unit. It holds the page to dry for a moment, then pulls it back in, passes it through the duplexer to flip it, and and prints on the other side. There is a price to pay for this paper-handling, though. The effective top margin on the back of the page is Iarger than it is on the front (when I print the printer's PDF file brochure, the very top of the content on the back side of the page is cut off). The full user manual mentions that when printing for duplexing, you will want a minimum top margin of 0.46 inches. This is significantly bigger than the 0.12 inches the unit is capable of on the first side. It also looks like there may be a tendency to slightly misalign the vertical spacing of front and back. Keep this in mind if you intend to print double-sided brochures; the unit apparently has some basic physical limitations on what it can do with the second side that don't apply to the first side. It should be noted that this is not truly a photo printer: it is not "full bleed" (it can't print right to the edges of the paper). It does a reasonable job, though; I tried a 450 dpi, 3150x1970 pixel image, on HP bright white inkjet paper, and it looked OK; under a magnifier I can notice, up close, some very fine dithering artifacts here and there (distinct from JPEG-compression artifacts). I next tried the same image on Epson glossy photo paper. If you tell the print driver that you are printing on not just any photo paper, but specifically one of the seven specific types of HP photo papers, an extra print quality option appears: "Maximum DPI." I took a guess and said that my paper matched "HP premium plus photo paper, glossy." I chose "Maximum DPI." The result does look subtly different than the result on HP's bright white paper; the colors are more saturated, and the dithering used to reproduce fine variations in shading look more like smooth blends. It is difficult for me to tell how much of the improvement, if any, comes from the driver's "Maximum DPI" setting and how much comes from the different ink-absorbing properties of the photo paper. In any case, the output on photo paper looks very nice. I can't guarantee that a professional photographer making fine-art prints would be satisfied, but you will probably be satisfied. I also learned the hard way that on this unit, unlike the Lexmark Z53, the paper is flipped during printing: photo papers should go in the tray with the glossy side down! This is another detail mentioned in the user manual -- but note, this "manual" is not in the box; it is on the enclosed driver CD-ROM. I guess HP has decided that since people don't read manuals, they won't bother with one, and instead they include only the setup poster and very minimal "Getting Started Guide." I don't think it is too cynical to imagine that they don't include a printed user manual so that we'll be inclined to print it out ourselves, thus getting a head start using up some of that expensive HP ink.) Anyway, so far I'm quite satisfied. Unlike the dirt-cheap inkjets, or the weird-looking multi-function devices, this one seems reassuring: a larger footprint, a little more weight, and a more solid feel. I am taking off one star only for the somewhat slightly disappointing duplexing and documentation; if you're the type who doesn't read manuals anyway, and you don't need perfect double-sided printing with maximum print area on both sides, these details won't bother you.
As I am writing this, the "low black ink" light has been on for 75 pages. Yet, there does not seem to be any fading or change in the black ink. I'd say the tone is as clear as the first page. Am I supposed to change out a half-spent cartridge? I'm used to Hewlett-Packard printers being reliable and consistant. This printer has potential because of its speed. I have a small business and this is important. However, the cost of maintaining a printer is equally important. I am keeping my old printer as a back-up. It's slower, but cheaper to run, when all factors are weighed. And, the "low ink" light comes on when the colors actually fade. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description The Hewlett Packard 8230e CD-Writer comes with a one-year warranty. Features Reviews (70)
The HP "MyCD" software is not that great. I haven't tried Adaptec yet, but I'm planning on it. Tried to use the newer 80 min / 700MB CDR media, and all I got were coasters galore! oh well, back to 74 min, no big deal, but that sucks too. Next, we try to burn an audio CD using MP3's ripped using Real Jbox, and HP doesn't recognize them as being the right quality. So we convert the songs to different formats (WAV), build the track listing, and when we start recording, windows reports that we have unplugged the CD writer. We did no such thing! So then MyCD is crashed, we reboot and it doesn't remember the track listing! We must re-create the entire track list, and then it finally works. I have 4x Yamaha SCSI cd writers at home and at work, and this should have taken 1 hour. Instead it took 4-5 hours just to burn one CD! I wouldn't recommend this, If you want to seriously burn CDs get a regular burner using IDE or SCSI. If you need portability or laptop compatibility, then look into pc card burners, or firewire.. explore all of your options. Overall this hasn't been a pleasant product to work/play with.
Then disaster struck. I found out that even though the writing was successful and now I have a CD with the mpegs listed in the directory, when I tried to play them in Media Player, they won't play! (Error is file format not supported.) It won't play from either the PC's CD_ROM or from the CD-writer itself. There is a report on the HP support site that talks about this problem. The remedy suggested was install the latest RecordNow software. But I already did that. So now I'm completely stumped. Think about this: HP shipped a cd-writer which creates CDs that cannot be read by other CD-ROMs. (To give them credit, the same drive worked with my Win2000 laptop.) The irony is that the reason I need to create these CDs is that I have a Compaq laptop that died last week (second time the motherboard completely died in two years). So I say: hail the new HP!

Win users, forget the poster and go right to Chapter 15 of the user manual. You don't have to 'reconfigure your network,' you just have to create a new user profile (on one pc) to communicate with the printer temporarily during setup. XP makes this hard, not HP. Hint: revert the control panel to 'classic' view and click on 'wireless networks,' near the bottom. Once we figured this out, installation was straightforward, but still time consuming. From the moment I was confident I knew what I was doing, to producing a printed page took almost 3 hours, and the installation software reduced my available disk space by one GIGAbyte. Now that it works, we like it. Print quality is good, even on plain paper, the photo print and scanner/copier work as advertised. If its still working a few months from now, I'd probably give it another star. Note to HP: put the setup routine on the front panel, and give us a 'barebones' drivers install option, and you've got a winner.
Hardware for home office use: 5 stars Even the initial setup on a wireless home network was not too difficult. The first connection was established (wirelessly through the router) with a desktop system running XP Professional. Despite the tremendous HP Software overhead, the setup did work smoothly and the first PC was setup in under an hour. The challenge came in trying to setup the PSC on a second unit, this time a laptop, connected wirelessly via the router (though also tried to get to work wired into the router), running Windows 2000 Pro. Utilizing the HP software again, and following the same steps as was done for the desktop, the setup software was unable to find the pritner - PERIOD. Eventually, with the help of a friend who is a IS network professional, and a download from the HP webiste, I am able to use the PSC, wirelessly as a printer, and use the scanning software through an internet explorer interface. The HP Print Director software never was successfully loaded - and it STILL COULD NOT FIND THE PRINTER - we tried yet again to load the HP Director software, after we had established basic printing functionality. Still not sure if this is an HP software issue, or that the WinXP OS platform handles wireless capability better than Win2K Pro. Still love the printer, but will (for the time being) have to live with limited remote functionality. (For the record, we concluded that it is hard to use the scan/copy features from remote locations anyway. It was the only humor we could take away from the multi-hour ordeal.) Have not completely given up on trying to get full functionality, but it may be several days before trying again!
My installation would go about 75% and then die on a "fatal error". After several failed installs, I found this document on HP's site, which convinced me to return the printer and cut my losses: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?product=303770&lang=en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00093927#Doc_Proc The solutions offered here involve, editing the registry, manually deleting files, renaming folders, etc. I really can't afford to risk trashing my OS and breaking other software just to get this working. I'll look for a solution that's easier to use. The hardware seemed pretty nice, but I think it's a roll of the dice if the software will install on your system.

Amazon.com Review To test the PS1215, we inserted our digital camera's CompactFlash card into the PS1215's slot and followed the LCD menus to print an index sheet that contained thumbnails of our photos. We also followed the menus to select a photo to print as an 8-by-10. The process was slow but intuitive, with most of our time spent waiting for the index sheet to print. The results were very good, with exceptionally sharp thumbnails and a surprisingly sharp and colorful 8-by-10, even using the printer's default normal mode. Next, we installed the software drivers, connected the printer to our PC, and printed our standard test documents using the printer's three modes--draft, normal, and best. Mixed color and black text documents printed at 5.6, 2.1, and 0.9 ppm respectively. Black-only text documents printed at 6.3, 3.9, and 0.6 ppm. (All speeds were adjusted upward to account for first-page delay.) Draft documents were faded; normal documents were sharper and had more accurate color; best documents were exceptionally sharp, requiring close inspection to distinguish them from the output of a laser printer. The PS1215 shined brilliantly in our color photo tests. On our PC, we used the included photo printing software to select our own high-resolution digital photos and to position them in the software's predefined page layouts. Samples were a bit slow to print--a typical 8-by-10 required 4 minutes and 28 seconds--but the output was superb on HP's premium glossy photo paper (sample pack included). Our samples displayed rich and accurate color, perfect register, fine detail, and realistic skin tones. There was no visible banding or smearing and only the faintest hint of pixelation. The PhotoSmart 1215 is priced considerably above its sub-$200 rivals, but the dramatic improvements in quality justify the extra cost. It operates quietly, sets up easily, prints very sharp text on a variety of media, and produces beautiful color documents and photos. This remarkable performer is an excellent all-purpose printer. --Mike Brown Pros Cons Features Reviews (22)

Amazon.com Review The ScanJet 6390C is a solid basic scanner that more than adequately fills a useful range of needs. Setup and installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized quick installation poster was easy to read and simple to follow. If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the coach feature (part of the extensive online help system) or other online help, since the 6390C doesn't include a printed user's guide. You can also use the internal coach to help scan your work after a quick but thorough tutorial. (It took us only 10 minutes to run through all the steps.) In our tests, the scanner required a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half. After warm-up, we quickly reproduced flat images and slides using several different preset dpi settings. The scanner also has an automatic feeder for scanning multiple flat documents or images, which we found particularly useful. With the feeder attached, the scanner can handle up to five scans per minute. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, but it produces vivid scans. The ScanJet 6390C also includes a transparency adapter that allows you to scan transparencies in sizes up to 5 by 5 inches. This is a fairly effortless scanner that can meet a wide range of needs. Whether paired with an ink-jet or laser printer, you will get crisp, clear scanned images. You can also fax scans or attach them to an e-mail with the click of a button. --David Greenberger Pros: Cons: Features

The problem is that it can not handle more than one sheet of paper in the tray at any one time. I connected the printer to my computer, that part was easy. The printer wanted to print a test page, so I let it. It then took two pieces of paper instead of one, printed half a page and jammed. I tired it again with less paper in the tray, it jammed again. It does not just paper jam, it also eats the paper as it locks up. This means that you have to open it up and fish the little ripped corners of the paper out of the machine before it will print again. The way to deal with this is to have only one piece of paper in the tray at a time, making multi-page print jobs a nightmare. The quality of the printing, when it does work, is very good for such a low priced printer. I like that it comes with both color and black ink. Some low price printers only have the color ink included. The power cord for the printer is not made for power-strips, it is huge! It takes up 3 outlets, unless you plug it in at the end of the strip. The printer does not come with the USB cord, you will need this to print. The cord will cost more than half the price of the printer. Good: Bad:
My only complaint in the power cord. Most products are now shipping with the transformer on the center of the cord, so the wall plug is small. This printer still has a HUGE wall wart, with the plug attached. Power outlet real-estate is scarce at my computer desk, and the huge plug does't help things.

Amazon.com Review A compact desktop printer designed to be a companion to PCs, the HP PhotoSmart P1000 can print images from your digital camera without the use of a computer, and you can begin printing moments after opening the box. The printer control panel allows a great deal of control with just a few options. We loved the infrared port, which allowed us to transfer photos directly to the printer (requires a digital camera that is infrared capable.) The Quick Success setup poster gave all the basics, clearly illustrated for the fastest no-fuss installation. For more detailed explanations and troubleshooting, the user's guide was thorough and easy to understand. The distinct LCD display made choosing which photos to print, how many, and in what size logical, with just a quick tap of soft pad buttons. To print from your computer is no more difficult--just a couple steps away--than to connect the cables and install the software. HP printers are designed to be easy to set up and get you straight to work, and the P1000 is no exception. In our tests, this unit delivered great photos in crisp color combined with flexible and dependable operation. When using CompactFlash Type I/II or SmartMedia, our photos had clean, true colors on any paper and especially on photo paper. Offering a maximum resolution of 2,400 dpi, we enjoyed getting fast copies of our prints--up to 8.5 pages per minute for color photos (and 11 ppm black text). You can store photos on your computer for many other uses, such as e-mail and sharing albums on Web sites. Solidly built and durably designed, the P1000 includes an adaptable 100-page-capacity paper tray and a print-cancel button. The P1000 printer provides great results on all types of media, ably providing professional quality and crisp clean black text on regular paper, photo paper, envelopes, transparencies, labels, and more. It also improves your work environment with its compact size and quiet operation. Even in small workspaces, at just 18 by 15 by 8 inches, it fits into your life, your home workstation, or small office. Hewlett-Packard also backs this printer with a one-year warranty and HP online support. Features Reviews (9)
The P1000 prints incredible pictures without draining the cartridge as quickly as the Lexmarks did. IMHO, this is the best printer you can buy for the price. Cartridges are expensive but refill kits aren't...and the refilled cartridges print as well as the originals. You will NOT be disappointed!!
