5-0 out of 5 stars perfect little printer
I purchased an earlier version of this printer last year along with my first digital camera. It is identical to this with one less port for memory cards. My camera was a 2 megapixel Olympus D510 so I did not intend to enlarge my photos beyond 4x6. This printer offered small size and ease of use, which appealed to me at the time. The printer does not need to be connected to a computer to produce high quality 4x6 images - as close to photos from film as you can get with 2 megapixels. I now have a three megapixel camera and the prints are even better.

This printer is so easy to use. Just plug it in, add paper, insert the smartmedia, compact flash, or memory stick into the appropriate slot, select the number of the photo you want to print, press the print button and watch a beautiful photo emerge from the printer. It weighs only 3 pounds and can be easily transported anywhere. I take it on vacation with me (in a soft sided, padded lunch box) and surprise my friends with instant copies of photos.

The are only a few drawbacks for this printer. First, photo paper and ink cartridges cost a lot so your photos will not be cheaper than outside processing. I try to purchase in larger quantities to reduce the cost and I use cheaper paper for less important prints. The second drawback is the inability to view the photo on the printer prior to printing. You'll have to jot down the photo's number from your camera screen. And, of course you can't crop or modify your prints on this printer, but that's not really different from developing photos at the store.

As for durability, as I said, I've had this printer for almost a year, have taken it everywhere, printed hundreds of photos and never had the slightest problem. It's a great little printer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great portable printer
I have been very happy with this printer and have used it often since purchasing it. The photos produced are sharp and clear, there is minimal set-up to begin using it right away, and no computer interface is needed, though there is software included if you like to do digital editing before printing. The photo preview screen makes printing without the computer practical and easy. The 230 stores in a bag roughly the size of the average camera bag which makes it easy to take to parties and family gatherings. For print quality, ease of use, and portablity, I haven't found a better 4 x 6 printer out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to tote and great quailty photos.
If you want to print a few high quality 4x6 photos on the spot without a PC, this is the printer for you. I recently attended a family reunion and before the punch bowl was empty everyone had a photo in their hand and a smile on their face. It is very easy to use. Just load any type memory chip and press print, or you can select the photo, adjust the contrast and crop the photo using the color screen. Get near photo lab results in a little over 2 minutes per photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad, bad
I used this printer twice and kept getting "paper jam" although there was no paper in the printer. Had to send the product back. Wouldn't buy another.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good bargain, good pictures
Since I got my digital camera I'd just been saving everything to CD and not printing anything out because printing through a website gets so expensive! I'd rather just have my own little printer, as long as the prints are good. The prints from this are great, and although they smudge if you don't allow them enough time to dry, they are good quality. I can't speak to fading yet, because I've only had it a month, but so far so good! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive, but flash and design frustrate overall
This camera is relatively inexpensive, but it's not all it's cracked up to be. Battery life, flash charging time, image processing time, and poor design all conspire to make this a frustrating item.

Battery Life: The only time this camera works as it should (i.e., flash charges in a reasonable time, LCD can be used, etc.) is when used with superior (read "expensive") batteries. There are no rechargeable power options, and when sending photos to your PC, do not attempt to use any power cord but the one HP sells (for a hefty price) or else you run the very real risk of frying the camera.

Design/Ergonomics: The camera's design is very poorly executed. It is difficult to hold the camera steadily without placing your fingers over the lens; consequently one is forced to hold the camera in an awkward way. The viewfinder is not well aligned, and has no depth (i.e., your view out the viewfinder can change a good deal as you slide your eye from one side to the other). Finally, the trigger button has a poor feeling--it's requires that you press down too long.

Flash Charging: As noted above, with anything but the best batteries, the flash will take a ridiculous amount of time to charge up: upto 25 or 30 seconds. I've missed many a photographic opportunities waiting for the flash to warm up. Furthermore the camera's default setting upon powering on is with the flash enabled, and changing that setting takes several seconds too.

Images: This camera does produce good images in most light (although it tends to overplay reds in low light, and underplay reds outdoors). However the time required to process an image between one snapshot and the next is sometimes somewhat slow.

Price: Price is the only real strong point for this unit. In retrospect I would have opted up for something more, especially considering that the price of digital cameras seems to be dropping $50 or so every six months.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH THE BOX IT CAME IN *******************************
i paid over 100.00 for this camera new. if i had the chance to buy another one brand new for 10.00 i would pass it up. this is the biggest piece of junk i ever seen in my life. to call customer service its 2.50 a minute with a 10 minute minimum billed to your phone bill. shame on hewlett packard. i will NEVER buy another hewlett packard product.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bug in the software will break the camera
This camera has two very bad problems. First, it goes through batteries like they're going out of style. Several other reviews have advised using rechargeable batteries, but in fact, that's a very bad option with this model. The user manual doesn't explain why, but on page 47 it says "do not use rechargeable batteries." I researched this a little - rechargeable batteries get too hot, putting the camera's innards at risk of melting. More importantly, any use of rechargeable batteries will void the service warranty. A voided service warranty would be bad under any circumstances, but it's especially bad in this case, because this particular camera is more likely to break than many others; there is a bug in its software.

There are two ways to delete pictures from the CF card. You can use the camera itself, or you can use your PC when you have the camera connected. The bug comes into play if you use your PC to delete pictures - you run the risk of "toasting" the camera's firmware. "Toasting" sounds bad, doesn't it? It is indeed very bad - the cost of repairing a "toasted" camera is much greater than the original price of the camera. (Meaning greater than the price of the camera when it was sold new two years ago.) Cameras under the service warranty are simply replaced, but if the service warranty has expired or is void, the customer must pay.

This is a well-known defect; in fact, it is one of the most-discussed problems involving the HP 215 on HP's "Support Forums." The original post dates back to September 19, 2001.

I was fortunate; my camera was still under warranty when it broke. I had an extremely difficult time with HP customer service, but eventually I did convince them to send a replacement.

The replacement camera is adequate, but that's about it. The on/off switch is poorly designed. It takes a delicate touch to properly turn the camera off, and I've lost count of the number of times I've accidentally left it on and returned to find the batteries dead.

The focus & shoot function is aggravating - to "focus" you must gently depress the button half way, and then you must wait for a signal before you can actually take the picture.

Judging the camera functioning as it was designed, I'd have given it 2 1/2 stars. With the software bug and HP's lousy customer service added in, it really doesn't deserve any stars at all!

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
Don't waste your time or money. Buy something else. I bought this camera 2 years ago. It never worked well, devoured batteries, and the PC interface was so complicated it was not worth the effort. I threw mine in the trash--not even worth donating to a charity. That is how useless it is. Carly should be ashamed of this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sturdy....But Not The Best
Ok Here's The Deal...

the HP PhotoSmart 215 Is A Pretty God Camera...THAT IS....If You Have The Money For All The Batteries And The Patience Of The Loading Time In Between Photos!

Pros:
*Pretty Good Picture Quality

Cons:
*It's an HP Camera (Their Cameras Stink)
*The Loading Time Between Taking Photos Is FOREVER!!!!!
*Not Worth The Price (Even Though It's Low!!!)
*You Cant Use Rechargeable Batteries, Or It Will Fry The Camera. So You Have To Buy The Ultra Expensive Batteries That Only Last Like 15 Pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars MyMac.com Product Review
Back at the start of November 2003, I wrote a review of another HP digital camera, the HP Photosmart 435, a 3MP model. That review was hard to write, as I have had good experiences with HP products for a number of years, and the 435 was simply the worse HP product I had ever used. To give a fair review, I had to score that camera very low, and a part of me just could not reconcile the fact that HP had made a bad product.

With the HP Photosmart 935, I feel that HP has vindicated the trust I have always felt for their products. While not perfect, and in fact flawed in a very few places, the HP Photosmart 935 is a great camera, one I would happy replace my aging Kodak with.

The HP Photosmart 935 is a 36-bit 5.3 -megapixel digital camera sporting 3x optical zoom lens, using a 7.6MM - 22.8MM Pentax Zoom lens. It also has 7x Digital zoom, which for any serious picture taker or photographer knows to avoid like the plague. (Digital zoom is worthless if you want quality pictures.)

The 1.5 inch backlit LED (521x218 pixel) digital viewfinder is remarkable in its clarity, but suffers from the same ailment most viewfinders on digital cameras does, which is blurry and hard to view from any angle except right behind the unit. Not a criticism of the 935, but simply pointing out the need for better LCD's in all digital cameras.

The controls are easy to use, in both settings and operation. Too many cameras try to pack as much controls as they can on the top and back on their digital cameras, and while there are quite a few on the 935, all buttons and controls are easy to use and in appropriate spots, rather than a hodgepodge of tiny buttons clustered together. Kudos to HP for understanding that a degree in engineering should not be needed to simply change shutter speed, or even turn on/off the viewfinder to save battery life.

Speaking of battery life, I found that the HP Photosmart 935 goes through them like there is no tomorrow. A brand-new set of Duracell batteries (the 935 uses two AA for power) only lasted for fifty pictures before running too low to allow the viewfinder to work. While battery life can be prolonged simply by not using the viewfinder, getting close to 250 pictures before needing a battery change, I found that the 935 still used up batteries faster than any of the previous digital cameras I have used. I do applaud HP for using standard AA batteries rather than the more expensive, and harder to find, CR-V3 variety, power consumption may be an issue. Look for rechargeable batteries for this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple to use, easy to share.
First let me say I read all the poor reviews (mostly because of battery life) and I haven't had any of these problems myself. I am not sure if HP 935's had a defect which they have since fixed? Anyway, I acknowledge the problem, but have not expierenced it myself. I was able to take 70-100 pictures before charging my batterys.

I bought the HP 935 just a few weeks ago and I love it. It is simple to use, but at the same time takes great pics! I also bought the docking bay and it makes it very easy to upload / print / edit pics.

The only complaint I have is the fact that you can only take pictures in 1mp or 5mp. There is no way to take 2mp,3mp or 4mp pictures. That doesn't really bother me, but it is a small disadvantage.

For the money this is a great buy.

As far as accessorys go get some NiMH batterys, some extra SD cards, the camera dock and plenty of ink and photo paper! You are going to be printing beautiful photos right away!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance and great value!
This camera performs excellently and is an amazing value. I have read many complaints about the battery life, and I haven't had a problem at all with mine. I think it is quite easy on the batteries compared to many cameras I have dealt with. I have never used alkaline batteries with the HP935, so I don't know how it would do with them. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries, because they save you so much $$$.
The other thing people complain about is that it takes 5 seconds from the point when you touch the power button to the time it is ready to take a picture. I can't believe that anyone would actually be upset about a measley 5 seconds. I have an Olympus SLR camera and it takes that long for the flash to power up and the lens to extend and everything to be ready on it as well. Why is 5 seconds so horrible?
I love the feel of the camera in your hands, it is substantial enough that you can feel it there and hold it still, but lightweight enough that it doesn't tire your arms when taking many shots.
The optical zoom is really great, but the digital zoom is only okay. The screen tells you the MP size you are lowering it to when you use the digital zoom, which is nice. All in all, digital zoom isn't very good on any camera, so don't expect much out of it!
I love the video function and the fact it records sound, too. The speaker for playback sounds a little scratchy, but when you play it back on the computer it sounds fine.
You can turn off the LCD display to save batteries if you want, and it will automatically show you a quick preview of the shot you just took. I love that! Also, the optical viewfinder is big enough that it is easy to see out of, a feature that I have a problem with on many other digital cameras.
I think that the optional dock is a waste of money, because you can easily upload your pictures onto the computer using the USB cord that came with the camera. As far as the advantage of the dock charging batteries, you can get a great battery charger with 4 batteries for around 15 bucks and you can have extra batteries always charged and ready to go, and that is a lot cheaper than the 80 or so dollars that HP wants for the dock which only comes with 2 batteries anyway. Skip the dock and save some $$$$! Use the money you save to buy a bigger memory card, you will need one! The 32 MB card it comes with fills quickly, about 23 pictures on the medium compression 5 MB picture quality setting. You will want another card if you like to take lots of pictures. I have a 256 MB card and that works great for me.
The quality of the pictures the HP935 takes is superb. I am just thrilled with it. It is easy to use and a wonderful value. I got mine on buydig.com and they were really nice to me, and everything came as promised. They have the best price I have seen online, even after you add shipping and handling. I definitely recommend this camera!

1-0 out of 5 stars very poor chose
This was my first experience with a digital camera. I had heard great things about digital cameras and thought that I would invest in a good camera. I was dead wrong.
I totally soured on digital after using this camera. I have invested countless dollors in batteries, sd cards, and other accesories.
Can only use this camera for 2-3 pictures even without a flash before batteries go dead.
The recharger does not work, we cannot use it at all. It takes 1-2 minutes of warm up time before it even turns on. Then is only good for 2-3 pictures.
I THINK THAT IT MUST EAT BATTERIES OR SOMETHING.
WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oh, the battery life
I got the 935 at Staples, who claimed that it came with
rechargable batteries. It didn't. They were 1.5v lithiums,
not rechargeable.

It's a nice camera, but 2 1800 mah cells last about 20
minutes, no matter what you do. These are good cells, but
this thing eats electricity like General Motors.

Hard to believe that HP would produce such a thing. I'm
sticking with my 1-2 megapixels cameras.

Then again, it might be defective. Of course, for $50, you can buy an AC pack that you can take with you on a long expedition
in the veldt, with a long extension cord.

Good lord, how could a company drop the ball so wonderfully????
And Hewlett Packard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely noisy and ink cartridges too small
Others have mentioned that the ink cartridges are smaller (20 ml.) than other printers that use 42 ml. cartridges. Since the small cartridges cost the same as the large ones, you will lose the savings you made by buying this cheeper printer after you've bought only a few cartridges. I'm a student, and have bought maybe 12 cartridges in the last 2 years. At almost [$] a cartridge, the difference adds up fast. Also, if you are a person that likes to use a highlighter, the ink from these cartridges will smear when you use a highlighter over it...very messy looking. The ink from the HP 45 cartridges doesn't seem to smear like that, but you can't use that size with this printer. Your only choice for black ink is the HP 20 cartridge.

I don't think it is possible to emphasize enough the noise this thing makes. It's probably four times louder than other printers I've used. It has awakened family members sleeping in adjacent rooms, so if you were planning to use the printer at night, be aware that you'll have to save printing for the morning in order for others to sleep.

If you live alone (and not in an apartment), only plan to print a few pages every now and then, and are not a student, writer, or in business, this might be an ok printer for you. It is very easy to set up.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's important to me in a printer?
The lack of paper jams is important to me in a printer. This one keeps it to a minimum. I won't say it hasn't happened, but not for ages. The print quality is excellent too. The two cartridges you need, though not cheap, last a good long while too (they run around $30 each, give or take a couple of bucks here and there). In summary, the lack of paper jams, the quality of printing and the availability of the cartridges (moreso now than two years ago) makes this a good buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but probs
Ok for regular black and white printing on paper. However, anything more than that and the printer frequently failed. Colors were not that good, photos - forget it and card stock, envelopes, etc., frequently jammed. Ink runs out without warning.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Printer
This is the only printer I've ever had but I've had it for two years now without a single problem so I guess it's safe to say that the durability factor is up to par. The quality of color pictures print out with amazing clarity and the black ink hardly ever smears. My only complaint about the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 612c is how expensive the ink cartilages are compared to other more luxurious printers. I'm hardly complaining, though, because the price of this and the quality that comes with it is overall a very good deal. You'll definitely get your money's worth with this machine and I wouldn't trade it for any other... At least for this price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
I have had this printer for over a year and have had no problems. The ink products are very easy to find, especially online at hp.com. The cartridges have been renamed however, C6614A is now called HP 20 their basic black ink cartridge. This information is easy to find on the hp.com web site. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer for <$200 !!
This printer is a great choice for a home office/hobbist.
It prints up to 4800dpi (good enough for most color prints)
and I especially like the built in duplex mode for printing manuals. The ink refills are expensive (most are) but last a reasonable amount of time. But for $199....a great buy.

Later, I plan on purchasing a separate printer for just color photos (dedicated printers are the best way to go). For now, this one does just fine for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Printer !!
I'm a Division Director and purchased the HP Inkjet 1100 for my office. I'm required to produce correspondence such as business letters, letters to the general public, and interoffice memos. I've owned numerous printers, both laser and inkjet. This is my favorite. The question is "how do you plan to use the output from the printer?" If you want business quality text for letters/memos and office quality color for printing slides or articles from the web printed quickly in relation to other inkjets, this printer is superb. If your aim is to print highly detailed photographs, there are better alternatives.

I love the two paper trays - a luxury to which I'm unaccustomed from other inkjet models. I store our organization's letterhead in one tray and plain paper in the other. You switch back and forth between the trays by clicking on "Properties" from the Print Menu that is revealed after clicking on "Print". The option of duplex printing (printing on both sides) is also standard on the printer using the same procedure referenced above.

The printer comes with 4 separate high capacity print heads and 4 separate ink cartridges, one each for black, magenta, yellow, and cyan. This allows you to replace only what is needed. I saw the reference to the print heads below. They have a capacity life and are only replaced when worn out. From the web, I found that the black print head needs replacing after 16,000 pages and the other three (magenta, yellow, cyan) after 24,000 pages. You'll go through a lot ink cartridges before the print heads need replacing. When that happens, the print heads are no more expensive than a standard ink cartridge.

I am highly satisfied with this printer. Again, it all depends on how one intends to use it. For business and home use: printing correspondence, presentation slides, spreadsheets, webpages and web quality graphics, I find this an exceptional product with good printing speed. Of course, that's why it's marketed using the name HP 1100 "BUSINESS" inkjet. If you're into photography, you might look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works nicely out of the box on MacOS X (Panther)
I bought this to unit replace a dead Lexmark Z53. It looked larger and more solid than the dirt-cheap printers; I calculated that perhaps this one would also not eat expensive ink cartridges as fast as those do. It also has separate printheads and ink cartridges for each of the four colors, which can allegedly save some money. I'll be printing articles, resumes, letters, and maybe the rare book-length document, but not massive numbers of pages.

Around this price range you can get either a really low-end laser printer or a higher-end inkjet. I was considering both options and finally decided I'd like to have something from the mid-to-upper end of the technology's available lineup rather than one from the bottom of the barrel. I am quite satisfied with the unit so far; but because I haven't printed thousands of pages yet, consider this review a bit preliminary.

Setup is not very difficult, but if you've never set up this kind of hardware before, it might seem a bit dismaying. There are a lot of tape strips to remove, a somewhat unusual fold-out clamp to hold the printheads in place, and not-all-that-clearly-marked internal foam block to remove. The wordless poster that comes with the unit is adequate, although some of the drawings are not very clear, and the larger paper tray shown on the poster did not come with my version (the 1100d). It is available as a separate option, but I probably won't bother; you might want one if the standard 150-sheet tray sounds inadequate.

If you've set up an inkjet before it should not be difficult. This printer seems to have an optical sensor it can use to calibrate itself -- you can watch as a little light illuminates the test page it is printing -- and it seems to have done a good job! I was pleasantly surprised. I did wind up reinserting the black printhead more firmly to try to correct some lightness and banding visible on the test page. It seems to have done the trick -- or maybe it is just "broken in" after a few pages -- and I'm quite satisfied with the print quality.

Driver selection was automatic, and when I plugged in the USB cable and opened MacOS X 10.3's Printer Setup Utility, it had already chosen the driver. I never actually inserted the driver CD. That's actually more due to Apple than to HP, but I was impressed anyway.

This inkjet is also unusual because it has a duplexing unit. It holds the page to dry for a moment, then pulls it back in, passes it through the duplexer to flip it, and and prints on the other side. There is a price to pay for this paper-handling, though. The effective top margin on the back of the page is Iarger than it is on the front (when I print the printer's PDF file brochure, the very top of the content on the back side of the page is cut off).

The full user manual mentions that when printing for duplexing, you will want a minimum top margin of 0.46 inches. This is significantly bigger than the 0.12 inches the unit is capable of on the first side. It also looks like there may be a tendency to slightly misalign the vertical spacing of front and back. Keep this in mind if you intend to print double-sided brochures; the unit apparently has some basic physical limitations on what it can do with the second side that don't apply to the first side.

It should be noted that this is not truly a photo printer: it is not "full bleed" (it can't print right to the edges of the paper). It does a reasonable job, though; I tried a 450 dpi, 3150x1970 pixel image, on HP bright white inkjet paper, and it looked OK; under a magnifier I can notice, up close, some very fine dithering artifacts here and there (distinct from JPEG-compression artifacts).

I next tried the same image on Epson glossy photo paper. If you tell the print driver that you are printing on not just any photo paper, but specifically one of the seven specific types of HP photo papers, an extra print quality option appears: "Maximum DPI." I took a guess and said that my paper matched "HP premium plus photo paper, glossy." I chose "Maximum DPI."

The result does look subtly different than the result on HP's bright white paper; the colors are more saturated, and the dithering used to reproduce fine variations in shading look more like smooth blends. It is difficult for me to tell how much of the improvement, if any, comes from the driver's "Maximum DPI" setting and how much comes from the different ink-absorbing properties of the photo paper. In any case, the output on photo paper looks very nice. I can't guarantee that a professional photographer making fine-art prints would be satisfied, but you will probably be satisfied.

I also learned the hard way that on this unit, unlike the Lexmark Z53, the paper is flipped during printing: photo papers should go in the tray with the glossy side down! This is another detail mentioned in the user manual -- but note, this "manual" is not in the box; it is on the enclosed driver CD-ROM.

I guess HP has decided that since people don't read manuals, they won't bother with one, and instead they include only the setup poster and very minimal "Getting Started Guide." I don't think it is too cynical to imagine that they don't include a printed user manual so that we'll be inclined to print it out ourselves, thus getting a head start using up some of that expensive HP ink.)

Anyway, so far I'm quite satisfied. Unlike the dirt-cheap inkjets, or the weird-looking multi-function devices, this one seems reassuring: a larger footprint, a little more weight, and a more solid feel. I am taking off one star only for the somewhat slightly disappointing duplexing and documentation; if you're the type who doesn't read manuals anyway, and you don't need perfect double-sided printing with maximum print area on both sides, these details won't bother you.

2-0 out of 5 stars hp business inkjet 1100 disappointing
Having read magazine and on-line reviews from a variety of sources on the 1100 and previously owning a HP 932c, I thought this was the printer for me. (I need good text and color graphics capabilities to create teaching materials for elementary and middle school students, as well as letters to parents, etc. Not necessarily professional quality, but it should be neat and clean.) I followed installation instructions exactly. There were no problems there. My disappointments are 1) This printer is noisier than my 932c. 2) The print quality for text is not the quality I expected, albeit it is relatively fast for this type of printer. (I have not tried color, graphics....nor will I if I can return the printer.) I printed in black: "fast normal" and "best." The results? A creaseline abt 1/8" along the left margin. Dash lines, faintly colored, abt 1/2" from the left margin. I then tried gray scale: "draft." The results were the same. After printing abt 15-20 pp, none of these problems resolved themselves. I suggest potential buyers see and hear this printer before buying. It's back to the drawing board for me. Wish the 932c hadn't been d/c.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's A Decent Printer....But......
It's a very quick printer and the feeder holds a lot of paper, but there are two major snags. There are four cartridges plus four printheads. Plus, there is very little support offered in the box: the only booklet refers to installation. The CD only offers support for the networked version of the printer. With all the pieces and parts, nowhere does it list which cartridges & printheads to purchase. There is no indication how long a printhead should last.

As I am writing this, the "low black ink" light has been on for 75 pages. Yet, there does not seem to be any fading or change in the black ink. I'd say the tone is as clear as the first page. Am I supposed to change out a half-spent cartridge?

I'm used to Hewlett-Packard printers being reliable and consistant. This printer has potential because of its speed. I have a small business and this is important. However, the cost of maintaining a printer is equally important. I am keeping my old printer as a back-up. It's slower, but cheaper to run, when all factors are weighed. And, the "low ink" light comes on when the colors actually fade. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It works OK, but I've had numerous problems.
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend, she has an HP laptop. I am a techie and I have much experience with installing things like this. The initial install was problematic, after installing the drivers, the 8230 and the internal laptop cd stopped working. HP tech support tried to get it working but I ended up re-installing Win 2000. That really sucked.

The HP "MyCD" software is not that great. I haven't tried Adaptec yet, but I'm planning on it.

Tried to use the newer 80 min / 700MB CDR media, and all I got were coasters galore! oh well, back to 74 min, no big deal, but that sucks too.

Next, we try to burn an audio CD using MP3's ripped using Real Jbox, and HP doesn't recognize them as being the right quality. So we convert the songs to different formats (WAV), build the track listing, and when we start recording, windows reports that we have unplugged the CD writer. We did no such thing! So then MyCD is crashed, we reboot and it doesn't remember the track listing! We must re-create the entire track list, and then it finally works. I have 4x Yamaha SCSI cd writers at home and at work, and this should have taken 1 hour. Instead it took 4-5 hours just to burn one CD!

I wouldn't recommend this, If you want to seriously burn CDs get a regular burner using IDE or SCSI. If you need portability or laptop compatibility, then look into pc card burners, or firewire.. explore all of your options. Overall this hasn't been a pleasant product to work/play with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, solid performing burner...
I have never had a problem with this burner and I would recommend it for a first time burner. It also has very easy to use software!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars BIG PROBLEMS
Like many other reviewers, I've had many problems and made lots of coasters. First time was making data CDs, but new version of Record Now seems to work OK there. Now I'm stuggling to make audio CDs (0 for 3 to date). That's with nothing but Explorer and Record Now running, and making the CD from MP3 files on the hard drive. Burning never completes and drive is "hung" (can't eject the CD). TAKE HEED and buy something else if you want to be productive and save a lot of time. (And tech support is as "iffy" as everyone says!!)

2-0 out of 5 stars Depends on your OS
I have no complaints about this cd-writer when I used it on my laptop with Win2000. However, I installed it on my desktop with Win1998 yesterday and it's been endless frustration. First, the writing operation aborts prematurely for no reason. I went to the HP website, downloaded the RecordNow 3.5, and made all the changes suggested (don't run background apps, etc.). After all this, the writing operation worked. I was copying a few small mpegs (about 4-10 megs each) to the CD.

Then disaster struck. I found out that even though the writing was successful and now I have a CD with the mpegs listed in the directory, when I tried to play them in Media Player, they won't play! (Error is file format not supported.) It won't play from either the PC's CD_ROM or from the CD-writer itself.

There is a report on the HP support site that talks about this problem. The remedy suggested was install the latest RecordNow software. But I already did that. So now I'm completely stumped.

Think about this: HP shipped a cd-writer which creates CDs that cannot be read by other CD-ROMs. (To give them credit, the same drive worked with my Win2000 laptop.)

The irony is that the reason I need to create these CDs is that I have a Compaq laptop that died last week (second time the motherboard completely died in two years). So I say: hail the new HP!

2-0 out of 5 stars Can anyone please help me?
I bought this cd-burner about a month ago. I havent got it to work yet. I have been getting the same high speed message. I dont know what to do. I have re-installed it over and over...this thing is driving me crazy. I dont know what to do... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not THAT bad
Wireless installation isn't as bad as some here say, but it IS annoyingly complicated. It strikes me that, if I can enter my entire phone book and the musical score to the Old Rugged Cross into a cell phone using 12 keys, why is there no way to enter the network name and encryption key into this printer via the front panel keypad..?

Win users, forget the poster and go right to Chapter 15 of the user manual. You don't have to 'reconfigure your network,' you just have to create a new user profile (on one pc) to communicate with the printer temporarily during setup. XP makes this hard, not HP. Hint: revert the control panel to 'classic' view and click on 'wireless networks,' near the bottom.

Once we figured this out, installation was straightforward, but still time consuming. From the moment I was confident I knew what I was doing, to producing a printed page took almost 3 hours, and the installation software reduced my available disk space by one GIGAbyte.

Now that it works, we like it. Print quality is good, even on plain paper, the photo print and scanner/copier work as advertised. If its still working a few months from now, I'd probably give it another star. Note to HP: put the setup routine on the front panel, and give us a 'barebones' drivers install option, and you've got a winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Networking was a challenge
To begin with - the unit is great. Feature-wise it has everything the home office needs.

Hardware for home office use: 5 stars
HP Software (keep reading): 2.5 stars

Even the initial setup on a wireless home network was not too difficult. The first connection was established (wirelessly through the router) with a desktop system running XP Professional. Despite the tremendous HP Software overhead, the setup did work smoothly and the first PC was setup in under an hour.

The challenge came in trying to setup the PSC on a second unit, this time a laptop, connected wirelessly via the router (though also tried to get to work wired into the router), running Windows 2000 Pro. Utilizing the HP software again, and following the same steps as was done for the desktop, the setup software was unable to find the pritner - PERIOD. Eventually, with the help of a friend who is a IS network professional, and a download from the HP webiste, I am able to use the PSC, wirelessly as a printer, and use the scanning software through an internet explorer interface. The HP Print Director software never was successfully loaded - and it STILL COULD NOT FIND THE PRINTER - we tried yet again to load the HP Director software, after we had established basic printing functionality.

Still not sure if this is an HP software issue, or that the WinXP OS platform handles wireless capability better than Win2K Pro. Still love the printer, but will (for the time being) have to live with limited remote functionality. (For the record, we concluded that it is hard to use the scan/copy features from remote locations anyway. It was the only humor we could take away from the multi-hour ordeal.) Have not completely given up on trying to get full functionality, but it may be several days before trying again!

4-0 out of 5 stars NO TROUBLE WITH INSTALLATION
After reading the other reviews about this machine, I got the impression from some that I would have trouble installing the software, especially if I elected for a full installation; however I wasn't very concerned, being there were conflicting reviews as well. I purchased the machine on clearance at a local Target retailer - for $175.00 - and I have been quite satisfied with it, and I encountered NO TROUBLE WITH INSTALLATION. I think that the customers who did were probably using less than top of the line computer systems, or weren't reading the instructions. The only downside I've noticed is the photo printing, specifically, having to exchange the black ink cartridge for the photo cartridge every time you want to print a good quality photo (using 6 color ink).

2-0 out of 5 stars Roll the dice on the install
I bought this product, and returned it about 3 days later, after fruitlessly trying to get the 400+ MB of software to install.

My installation would go about 75% and then die on a "fatal error". After several failed installs, I found this document on HP's site, which convinced me to return the printer and cut my losses:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?product=303770&lang=en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00093927#Doc_Proc

The solutions offered here involve, editing the registry, manually deleting files, renaming folders, etc. I really can't afford to risk trashing my OS and breaking other software just to get this working. I'll look for a solution that's easier to use.

The hardware seemed pretty nice, but I think it's a roll of the dice if the software will install on your system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazon programmers are dummy's
I thought HP was annoying with their stupid printing software... Amazon allows you to type in a 500 word review for a product and when you go to click on a link for review guidelines...you lose your whole review. Idiots....the link should be a pop up window!!!! I dont feel like posting my stupid review now, I am so frustrated. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Based on the popular HP P1000, the HP PhotoSmart 1215 photo printer directly accepts CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards and prints wirelessly from infrared devices. No PC is required, but it is PC and Mac compatible. With 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution and HP's enhanced layering technology, photos are stunningly beautiful and text is razor sharp. The updated version is faster and quieter and has an optical sensor that automatically adjusts printer settings for the paper type.

To test the PS1215, we inserted our digital camera's CompactFlash card into the PS1215's slot and followed the LCD menus to print an index sheet that contained thumbnails of our photos. We also followed the menus to select a photo to print as an 8-by-10. The process was slow but intuitive, with most of our time spent waiting for the index sheet to print. The results were very good, with exceptionally sharp thumbnails and a surprisingly sharp and colorful 8-by-10, even using the printer's default normal mode.

Next, we installed the software drivers, connected the printer to our PC, and printed our standard test documents using the printer's three modes--draft, normal, and best. Mixed color and black text documents printed at 5.6, 2.1, and 0.9 ppm respectively. Black-only text documents printed at 6.3, 3.9, and 0.6 ppm. (All speeds were adjusted upward to account for first-page delay.) Draft documents were faded; normal documents were sharper and had more accurate color; best documents were exceptionally sharp, requiring close inspection to distinguish them from the output of a laser printer.

The PS1215 shined brilliantly in our color photo tests. On our PC, we used the included photo printing software to select our own high-resolution digital photos and to position them in the software's predefined page layouts. Samples were a bit slow to print--a typical 8-by-10 required 4 minutes and 28 seconds--but the output was superb on HP's premium glossy photo paper (sample pack included). Our samples displayed rich and accurate color, perfect register, fine detail, and realistic skin tones. There was no visible banding or smearing and only the faintest hint of pixelation.

The PhotoSmart 1215 is priced considerably above its sub-$200 rivals, but the dramatic improvements in quality justify the extra cost. It operates quietly, sets up easily, prints very sharp text on a variety of media, and produces beautiful color documents and photos. This remarkable performer is an excellent all-purpose printer. --Mike Brown

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipe for grief
Until this product, I was a huge promoter of HP printers, but the HP 1215 apparently was designed with little attention to Apple compatibility. Unpredictably it refused to print first in 0S9 and then in 0SX. I'm frankly sick of downloading and reloading new drivers only to find they don't work and/or freeze up my entire computer. Because of this printer I've cleaned off my entire hard drive, lost valuable files and programs, and still wound up with a non-functional machine. It's been in my closet for 6 months, and I'm considerably happier with a new bottom-of-the-line Canon printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a very reliable printer...
I love my PhotoSmart 1215 but was a little discouraged when the driver for XP was not available. The neat thing about this printer is, if you mainly use it to print photos from a memory card, you don't have to be connected to your PC. Just know which numbers you want to print, enter and off it goes. The quality of my prints has been great. Right now it's connected to my iMac and is doing splendidly. It's quite dependable and not expensive. I'd recommend it highly.*****

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer
I have had this printer for about 1 year and I love it!. I have had no problems with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best inkjet printer I have ever used!
This printer is wonderful. The print quality is exceptional, the speed is plenty fast enough and it was exceedingly easy to set up. I get excellent quality prints everytime. If I see a little smudge, I just tell the printer to clean the heads and my prints are once again perfect. We now have two that we purchased from Amazon, and I am trying hard to justify getting another one for my home. The employees that regularly use these printers are extremely satisfied. And the price is amazingly low.

4-0 out of 5 stars HP fan
I've had a HP842C for 3 years. On its last leg, I researched what printer (brands) to get, including all the HP's, and found the 1215 as the best buy. A friend told me the only thing good HP does is printers; don't know if that's true, but I am sold on their printers. I print mega digital photos, and the large ink cartridge is what sold me. I also publish a bi-monthly newsletter for my trade association, and my first copy from the 1215 was more than anticipated. I had forgotten what a good printer accomplished. The "normal" print selection produced text so crisp and clear; the color photos were superb. Print speed was quick - just watch out for the flying paper. The printer spits the paper out so quickly, some sheets landed on the floor. I've remedied that situation. Also had to buy a new 78 color, the print heads were dried up on the cartridge included in the box. Being an older model HP, I wasn't surprised nor angry. It's just one of those things. Overall, very satisfied. So much, I bought a second one! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Looking for a good basic scanner for home or small office use? The Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 6390C professional scanner is a strong performer and is easy to set up, so you will be scanning in no time.

The ScanJet 6390C is a solid basic scanner that more than adequately fills a useful range of needs. Setup and installation were quick, easy, and intuitive. The oversized quick installation poster was easy to read and simple to follow. If you want additional assistance, you will need to check the coach feature (part of the extensive online help system) or other online help, since the 6390C doesn't include a printed user's guide. You can also use the internal coach to help scan your work after a quick but thorough tutorial. (It took us only 10 minutes to run through all the steps.)

In our tests, the scanner required a warm-up time of just under a minute and a half. After warm-up, we quickly reproduced flat images and slides using several different preset dpi settings. The scanner also has an automatic feeder for scanning multiple flat documents or images, which we found particularly useful. With the feeder attached, the scanner can handle up to five scans per minute. The slide adapter is a bit cumbersome, with too much leeway in the placement of the slide, but it produces vivid scans. The ScanJet 6390C also includes a transparency adapter that allows you to scan transparencies in sizes up to 5 by 5 inches.

This is a fairly effortless scanner that can meet a wide range of needs. Whether paired with an ink-jet or laser printer, you will get crisp, clear scanned images. You can also fax scans or attach them to an e-mail with the click of a button. --David Greenberger

1-0 out of 5 stars Not HP Product
I ordered as it came up as an HP product. Beware-it is a refilled cartridge, and Amazon will charge you for returning it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not original, and refilled too
I agree with the other reviewer -- this is NOT
an HP Inkjet cartridge. It doesn't look like the
picture, and it says it's a "refilled" unit.
If I wanted a refilled one, I could have gotten
it a lot cheaper elsewhere. The only good thing
I can say is it came with a prepaid envelope for
recycling the old cartridge (which they will
presumably refill and sell to somebody else!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled
This is not an original HP Printer cartridge. It is a knockoff instead. Don't be fooled and think that you are getting an original HP manufactured cartridge. You are not. Order from HP's site and at least you will get the product you want. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Good
I have always been a big fan of HP printers. I have an HP 920c at work and love it. I was trying to find one for my home but they have discontinued it. Instead I bought this one and have been so disappointed with it. It jams all the time and the color isn't as good as the 920c. It makes a terrible noise when it is trying to pull the paper through and it always manages to pull at least 5 pages at a time. Now it is refusing to print anything. I am not happy with this printer at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars HP DeskJet 3550
When this printer works, it works well. I almost gave it 3 stars.

The problem is that it can not handle more than one sheet of paper in the tray at any one time. I connected the printer to my computer, that part was easy. The printer wanted to print a test page, so I let it. It then took two pieces of paper instead of one, printed half a page and jammed. I tired it again with less paper in the tray, it jammed again. It does not just paper jam, it also eats the paper as it locks up. This means that you have to open it up and fish the little ripped corners of the paper out of the machine before it will print again. The way to deal with this is to have only one piece of paper in the tray at a time, making multi-page print jobs a nightmare.

The quality of the printing, when it does work, is very good for such a low priced printer. I like that it comes with both color and black ink. Some low price printers only have the color ink included. The power cord for the printer is not made for power-strips, it is huge! It takes up 3 outlets, unless you plug it in at the end of the strip. The printer does not come with the USB cord, you will need this to print. The cord will cost more than half the price of the printer.

Good:
Print quality
Size of unit
Price
Ease of install
Ink included

Bad:
Paper jams
Power cord size
No USB cord

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one
Don't bother - very disappointing for an HP product. This printer fails to print consistently and "carriage stalls" frequently. This defect is clearly well known at HP Support. The manual solution, while effective, is not a real answer. Save your time and money on this one.(...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Printer, Watch out for power cord
I've only been using my new HP 3550 for a day, and so far I'm pleased. It seems to be a great bang for the buck.

My only complaint in the power cord. Most products are now shipping with the transformer on the center of the cord, so the wall plug is small. This printer still has a HUGE wall wart, with the plug attached. Power outlet real-estate is scarce at my computer desk, and the huge plug does't help things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speedy and inexpensive.
Bought this printer because ink for the lexmark was about the same price as this printer. Have been very happy with it. Faster print speed than the lexmark, vibrant colors, and installed like a dream. Plug and go.
You just can't go wrong with this one. Would have got 5 stars if it came with a usb cable, had to buy seperately. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

While kids may coo over carnival-colored units, you'll be impressed by the substantial, professional demeanor of the gunmetal black Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart P1000 printer. It connects to your PC and also directly accepts CompactFlash Type I/II or SmartMedia from your digital camera. Plus, it offers fast, photo-quality printing and HP PhotoREt technology.

A compact desktop printer designed to be a companion to PCs, the HP PhotoSmart P1000 can print images from your digital camera without the use of a computer, and you can begin printing moments after opening the box. The printer control panel allows a great deal of control with just a few options. We loved the infrared port, which allowed us to transfer photos directly to the printer (requires a digital camera that is infrared capable.) The Quick Success setup poster gave all the basics, clearly illustrated for the fastest no-fuss installation. For more detailed explanations and troubleshooting, the user's guide was thorough and easy to understand. The distinct LCD display made choosing which photos to print, how many, and in what size logical, with just a quick tap of soft pad buttons. To print from your computer is no more difficult--just a couple steps away--than to connect the cables and install the software.

HP printers are designed to be easy to set up and get you straight to work, and the P1000 is no exception. In our tests, this unit delivered great photos in crisp color combined with flexible and dependable operation. When using CompactFlash Type I/II or SmartMedia, our photos had clean, true colors on any paper and especially on photo paper. Offering a maximum resolution of 2,400 dpi, we enjoyed getting fast copies of our prints--up to 8.5 pages per minute for color photos (and 11 ppm black text). You can store photos on your computer for many other uses, such as e-mail and sharing albums on Web sites.

Solidly built and durably designed, the P1000 includes an adaptable 100-page-capacity paper tray and a print-cancel button. The P1000 printer provides great results on all types of media, ably providing professional quality and crisp clean black text on regular paper, photo paper, envelopes, transparencies, labels, and more. It also improves your work environment with its compact size and quiet operation. Even in small workspaces, at just 18 by 15 by 8 inches, it fits into your life, your home workstation, or small office. Hewlett-Packard also backs this printer with a one-year warranty and HP online support. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good prints... bad compatibility
I've had the P1000 for a couple of years. Worked great with WindowsME. After installing XP on my desktop I had to reinstall the printer software to get it to work. Just got a new laptop and it doesn't work at all.. in fact, the P1000 causes my Dell Inspiron to crash whenever I disconnect the USB cable. When the cable is connected the laptop never recognizes the printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad usb connection on P1000
I really liked this printer when I first got it about 3 years ago. Sure it was loud and a little slow, but it printed pretty good. Well, after about 1 1/2 years of VERY light duty, I all of a sudden start getting error messages on my PC telling me the printer is not connected to the computer. First I changed the cord to no avail, then I tried different open USB ports on my computer, so it ends up I just have to position the USB cable perfectly to the back of the P1000 to get it to work. At least it would still work, right? Well that got me by for about six months and now it just will not connect at all. Now my HP P1000 has a nice new home in the trashcan and I'm giving Canon a try. If HP puts as much thought into printers as they do computers I definetely don't want to buy another HP product again...

4-0 out of 5 stars photograph printing
If you are looking for a home photo-quality printer (not pro quality- but good enough form me), for a decent price. This is your printer.
I can print 8X10's that come out with amazing results. I even use my scanner to print from the negatives and the photos print out better than my local store (I am not comparing to 1-hour development, I am comparing a local specialty store with an amazing reputation).
Just make sure to use (and of course set the printer) to high quality photopaper, and you will see amazing results.
I bought this printer a few years ago and have never had a problem with it. I don't know if the newer versions are better, but I can't say a bad word about this printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Money well spent!
I've tried two Lexmark printers: Z51 and Z53. The Z51 was so-so and the Z53 was pretty good. However, both sucked ink faster than Dracula sucks blood.

The P1000 prints incredible pictures without draining the cartridge as quickly as the Lexmarks did.

IMHO, this is the best printer you can buy for the price. Cartridges are expensive but refill kits aren't...and the refilled cartridges print as well as the originals.

You will NOT be disappointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pics from this printer
The printer is great. I couldn't be happier with it, especially since it is so inexpensive. The thing I don't like is the fact that the ink costs an arm and a leg -- check out the cost of HP cartridge 78...If you print many photos, the ink costs start to add up--mainly if you are doing full letter size prints. However, it's still much cheaper than getting film developed. ... Read more
