2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this printer.
This printer is very different from most HP printers I have seen. It's not as high quality or reliable as I have come to expect them to be.

One of the things that some people complain about is how it vibrates - but that's only if you did not put the paper in far enough. This is not a problem with the printer.

However, the first time I tried to refill the ink cartridges (color and black and white) instead of paying an arm and a leg for a new set of cartridges I had major problems. First of all, it wouldn't print black. I reseated the cartridges. Then it wouldn't print magenta or yellow. I reseated the cartridges. Then it would print everything but cyan. Nothing seemed to make this problem go away.

After reseating a dozen times, I got it back to where it would print color but not black, and bought a new black ink cartridge (which was cheaper because HP MAKES INK CARTRIDGES THAT ARE HALF EMPTY BUT MORE THAN HALF AS EXPENSIVE AS FULL ONES, without marking them visibly). Anyway, the purchase of the new ink cartridge got it working again. When that black ink cartridge ran out, I refilled it and these problems did not repeat.

If this was the only problem with the printer, I wouldn't be leaving a 2-star review. Now the printer has a mechanical problem. No software manipulation can fix this problem, trust me I've tried (and I know a dozen Computer Science majors). The cartridge holder that slides back and forth when you print is stuck completely on the right side. It's as if it went too far to one side and couldn't come back. The error message says "Mechanism Error. The print cartridge cradle cannot move. Please check under the device's top cover for a paper jam or other obstruction." Of course, there is no paper jam or other obstruction.

This was the final straw with the printer, and I have yet to see how to resolve this problem. :( I will think again before buying HP, and will probably buy a Canon to replace it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Piece Of JUNK!!
I was a satisfied HP customer since the old times of deskjet 550. I bought this unit a little over a year, used it sparingly, until the well famous "small cog" broke. I remember this happened while the 2nd black cartridge was half full ( HP, are you intentionally making this junk fail so I spend another $100 in another one of your printers in less than a year??). I called HP parts service and of course, NO FAIR SOLUTION - THE COG IS NOT SOLD. Their only "offer" was to send the printer back to HP, PLUS $59, and they would ship a "refurbished" one. So, are they keeping the cogs to make a final price of $159 for the printer? Since I REFUSE to buy a new printer, I wanted to make this junk at least pay off the ink cartridges until they empty themselves, so I found the website http://www.fixmybrokenprinter.co.uk/ where Mr. G will fix the broken cog for a very fair price. I'll make this machine sweat its price until it dies, and believe me, no more cheap HP printers after this one!! I'm done with HP!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of CRAP
I think the HP 3820 is the worst printer I have ever owned. It is noisy, slow, and I have had endless driver problems. Don't buy one, you can do a LOT better!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Crap.
Lasted for two black printer cartriges. Now it is a paper weight. Back door fell off long ago because the tabs broke, after the warranty expired of course, so I rebuilt the tabs myself using super glue and it worked fine again until it just decided it wouldn't accept new printer cartriges anymore. DO NOT BUY. This is a shoddily made product. Welcome to the new era at HPQ.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just don't want one!
I bought my HP 3820 a few months ago. Like that other review stated, the 3820 makes all kinds of noises, and it keeps the user waiting forever before it finally-usually just starts spitting out strange characters rather than meaningful information. I tried to print an envelope for a resume about the third or fourth time that I used my 3820, but my 3820 could hardly even feed envelopes that were absolutely properly fed and properly aligned (and a correct paper size indicated by my Microsoft word processor). I have seven years of print operations experience, and I have used dozens of printers of all kinds in my total of more than 11 years of computer room and print operations experience, and I can assure you that I did absolutely nothing wrong to make this 3820 fail on printing envelopes. After I gave up on trying to get my 3820 to correctly print an envelope I cancelled the print, reset the printer, and then I tried to print something else on regular paper, but my printer has not been able to even feed a sheet of paper ever since it refused to correctly feed my envelopes. There is nothing blocking the feed, and I heard no noises indicating anything breaking or popping loose whenever the envelopes had previously gone thru it and come out printed all wrong. The printer now acts as if there is some variable that got turned on in its circuitry that is making it not want to feed from the tray, but I have tried resetting it in every way. This 3820 printer, in the few times that I got it to print before the envelope incident, never printed all that great of quality anyway, but now it is just a dead issue. This is my third and probably last HP printer period. I am also tired of having to reset printer cartridges that are designed to be difficult to refill (despite that I do have success refilling them with generic inks). (...)Should you see any good reviews anywhere by anyone wanting to sell you on one of these 3820 printers, then trust me, it is likely that what you are reading came from a person(s) just wanting to unload a worthless printer on you! Don't be someone else's sucker! The only reason that I gave this printer its ONE STAR rating is because there were no NEGATIVE STAR ratings from which I had to choose. Truthfully, YOU DO NOT WANT THIS PRINTER! I would stake my B.S. in computer science on it! As for the cartridge for this printer... you can find them empty online (...) (empties that have never ever been refilled), and then you can buy refill kits and refill them yourself (but don't try to fill the tanks based on the order of colors on the HP cartridges' labels, or you will have been steered into wasting your perfectly good empty cartrdges, because the colors are in the wrong order!!!) Just don't buy one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use!
I'm very impressed by the straight forward design and navigation of the HP PhotoSmart 7960. Very easy to use and figure out, even if you're a technophobe like myself. Out of the box it was easy to set up with the step-by-step poster that they provided. Right away I was printing vacation photos straight from my compact flash (with the printer's default settings, without being hooked up to a computer) and I got really good printouts.

Pros: The LCD display is bigger than most digital cameras and is very clear, navagation is straight forward and easy to figure out, the color range is good (considering there's "8 colors"), very easy to use.

Cons: It comes with color cartridges that combine colors (CMY, Light-CMY, Grey or Black) so if you run out of one color you have to replace the whole thing. On glossy photo paper the overall color tends to be a bit darker. And at the moment it's a bit pricy compared with it's competition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have one!
Combine this printer with the new HP Premium Plus photo paper and you would swear that your prints were from film! I recieved this printer as a gift this weekend and spent today in heaven playing with it. First off, it is the easiest printer I have ever dealt with! You don't even need to have a computer hooked up! The panel is intuitive; but, gives you a lot of control including print size, # of copies, zoom, and rotate. And everything you do to the photo is shown on the screen which adjusts to whatever angle is easiest for you to view. I was printing using the low-end black ink instead of the higher quality grayscale ink and I am still amazed at the quality of the prints! If you are looking for an amazing printer which is easy to operate, this is the one you want!

4-0 out of 5 stars I love my HP Photosmart 7960
I was looking for an 8 1/2 by 11 inch borderless printer for producing high quality double sided product brochures. I bought an Epson Stylus Photo R800. WRONG thing to buy. It does 8 1/2 by 11 and it does borderless printing, but NOT on 8 1/2 by 11 media. The largest borderless print media is 8 by 10, and no one makes that in two sided print surfaces. I returned the Epson and got the HP. What a relief, it does exactly what I want and is not finicky, lots of options for acceptable paper. I did have some trouble installing software however. I had to shut down and remove all other USB devices and then load the printer before it would install properly. Otherwise 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Printer
One thing a lot of people do not realize is that the reason why the ink cartridges are so expensive is b/c the manufacturers sell the printers usually at lower than cost and then they recoup their sales through the accessories such as paper and ink cartridges. Yes, it may seem to be unscrupulous, but HP and all the others are in the business of making money. As for the person who had problems printing envelopes, remove all the paper and use the paper guides and resize them to the envelope. I've had no trouble printing envelopes with my 7960.
One feature that people have also failed to mention is even though the memory card slots are there so you don't need the computer to print your photos, they also save you the trouble of attaching your camera to the computer since you can move your pictures from your memory card to your hard drive since the printer also acts as a removable drive.
everyone has been blown away when I tell them that I printed these pictures at home, and i find that the pictures that it prints are better than when I took my memory card to wal mart. Plus, it was quicker. It was no problem using my Sony digital camera with my HP printer.
One more thing, buy the printer at Sam's or Wal-Mart as it is only $187.

3-0 out of 5 stars tested 3 of them
I purchased a 7960 about a week ago. It did a great job right up to the point of ejecting the photo from the printer. The last inch of the photo was marked/scratched like a roller was stuck on the paper feed. I took it back and was given another printer, same thing. This time I went to another location, thinking maybe they got a bad batch of them but......same thing.
I traded up to a Canon I9900, best move i've made in a long time. The Canon is the smart purchase without a doubt. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with HP
Don't be mistaken... this is a "low end" printer. But if you're on a budget this is a great deal for less than $100. I am very satisfied with all printing applications. The only real negative aspect for me is it's kind of noisy when feeding the paper through, but is worth it for the speed and quality (and price). Be aware that this printer connects to your computer strictly through USB connection (no parallel). Expect to pay an additional $25-30 for the USB cable if you don't already have one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Printer for a Great Price!
As a poor college student needing a printer I was looking for quality for the best price possible. I knew that HP was a reputable brand as far as quality goes, so that's what swayed me in that area. For photo printing I was immensely impressed with the quality and detail. With the right resolution they look as though done by a professional photographer. The only downside is the consumption and price of the ink and the fact that you need to buy the connecting cable separate, but considering the price of the printer I'm not too miffed. It also doesn't require a lot of space. Score is 4 out of 5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great basic printer for the money
I bought the HP 5150 as a replacement for a 7+-year old, broken HP ink jet, and I'm very happy with it. I use it to print a lot of envelopes and haven't had any problems with the alignment getting messed up like I did with my old printer. The guides adjust smoothly (unlike my old printer) and it prints quickly enough for my own personal use - faster than my old printer since the 5150 uses a USB cable (I saved $15 on that and bought it at Target). It was really simple to set up, too, and I only have a basic knowledge of computers.

I don't plan on using it to print photos, but I understand the cartridges switch out and you can print quality color photos. The cartridges were a bit tricky to snap in.

I am comfortable with HP quality, so I didn't consider any other brands. The price seemed reasonable.

Overall, I'm very happy with this printer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ours just died one day
We had our 5150 for three months and it conked out one day in the middle of a job. We called HP and were told, "Maybe it's the power cord. We'll send you a new one." That was wishful thinking, and we ended up having to send the printer back to HP in exchange for a brand-new one. It was a hassle, though, dealing with HP's computer system (ironic).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Compact Printer
I recently bought my HP DeskJet 5150 as a replacement for an elderly HP inkjet printer that gave up the ghost. In general I have been very pleased with the 5150. It had flawless installation (I was ready to print ten minutes after I opened the box) and setup, and has excellent print characteristics in both B&W and color. It is very capable, starts up fast, has a quick throughput rate, and superior graphics resolution.

I have framed a couple of color prints printed on the 5150 (on HP photo paper), as they are equal to conventional photographic printing to the naked eye. My only caveat on the photo printing is that I can't vouch for the life of the prints, so far so good, but I know that some inkjet prints fade badly over time.

I am pretty hard on the 5150. Because I am in in the throes of researching and writing my Master's thesis right now, I am printing copious amounts, and running at least 500 pages a week through the 5150, and thus far have had no problems with it.

The one minor and completely unanticipated, annoyance I have with the 5150 is the shelf that holds the printed sheets is too short. HP provides a rickety pull out/fold over contraption to help hold printed work, but in my experience it is inconvenient at best (it almost doubles the frontal area of the printer), and is a real space hog on my desk.

Aside from that one small critique (which is the reason I gave it four instead of five stars) I think the HP 5150 is an excellent little printer at a bargain basement price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for home use, but consider ink costs as well
This is an excellent printer for those who don't print a lot. It will print documents at a very reasonable speed, and wonderful photos on 4x6 tabbed paper. The hardware has proven to be pretty reliable, as this new printer is based on HP's older Deskjet 3500 series.

The software has been improved greatly over last year's products. There is now a much lower chance of problems with installation. The extra software that's included isn't too large, so this printer is good for PC's close to the minimum requirements.

If you print more than 100 pages a month, or if you have a business, I'd recommend the Deskjet 6540 instead, as the ink costs half as much. Due to the higher ink cost, the 3745 is a good choice only if you don't print a lot. Otherwise, it is an excellent printer for home use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comparing is Believing
Originally I was set to buy a Canon S750. I read very good reviews on the Canon S750 but have always owned a HP inkjet (694C for 7 years). When the 5550 hit the market at 149.00 (20.00 less then the Canon) I actually purchased both the hp 5550 and the canon S750 to make my own side by side comparisons. I could not resist comparing the two. The ease of set up on both was comparable, extremely easy. Both offer a USB and a parallel connection. The HP offers a add-on duplexer for front and back printing (at an additional cost). Print speeds I would have to give the edge to the Canon. The Canon is also remarkably economical due to the separate ink cartridges which really impressed me. Now to the real test. Text is remarkably sharp and dark on the HP, almost laser like, while the Canon was okay, text was not as dark and appeared to be a little soft. On graphics the canon does not do a good job, especially on plain paper when compared the HP 5550 which is outstanding. On photos there is no comparison. The HP (which offers 4800 x 1200 color dpi and 1200x1200 dpi black text compared to 2400 x 1200 color and 600x600 black text on the S750) is by far the winner here. The HP photos came out considerably brighter and truer to color than the S750. Colors were smoother and pictures were sharper. The S750 does an okay job if you do not regularly print photos (especially on their 4x6 completely borderless paper, which I also liked) but pictures came out dull and cloudy compared the HP 5550 (which also does borderless prints on their 4x6 paper with a bottom tear off tab). The Canon S750 has a quiet mode which is very nice. The HP is a bit noisy in comparison. Both have an auto on and off features that initializes when you call up a print job. The Canon can be set to auto off after as little as 10 mins. of no use where the HP will shut off after 30 mins.
After all is said and done, I returned the Canon S750 and am happily keeping the HP 5550. The quality out ways by far any ink savings and all other features are very close.
I also found out through the HP Rep at a local retail store, that the new HP 7150 photo is no different in photo quality than the 5550 and the only difference is the 7150 offers a dedicated feed on the paper tray for 4x6 photo paper and on the 5550 you have to remove the out tray to slide the 4x6 paper all the way to the back of the feeder tray (no big deal though) The 7150 also offers a USB connection on the front of the printer to connect your digital camera to and print your pictures directly from your camera however it is a proprietary port (only excepts HP cameras). Print speeds are a little slower than the 5550 and the price is 30.00 higher. 7150 does not offer a parallel connection, only USB.
I would recommend the HP 5550 to anyone who wants a reasonalby priced fast, excellent text and photo quality printer that is very easy to use. The out the door cost is very reasonable and is very sleek looking. HP has done an good job with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an HP... What do you expect!!
I have been a HP fan for years and recently was in a pinch for cash and went with a Canon. What a mistake. From the beginning I noticed obvious problems and it finally died after only 6 mos.

I'm a college student and waisting cash is not an option. I found myself in the middle of a spring semester without a printer and out that wasted cash. I learned my lesson and wasn't going to make that mistake again.

After upgrading to a new laptop I knew it was time to find an HP! Having had the HPDeskjet 5550 now for nearly 3 mos I must say it is good to be back with HP! Print quality is simply outstanding! I use the option to make quick (lower quality) prints when I'm working on editing essays. I honestly cannot tell the difference between my "lower quality" prints and the "high quality" prints my friends have with their epsons and canons!

I do agree with another review that the only drawback is the high cost per page in ink. Install was simple with easy to follow instructions. You will need to purchase a USB or Parallel cable seperately as HP no longer seems to be including cables. Not only is it a great quality printer it also has a stylish design. Go with the HPDeskjet 5550 it is worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars HP Deskjet 5500
Loading the drivers and setting up the 5500 is a smooth, pain free process. I had it printing within minutes of being out of the box. The HP "Printer Assistant" program is user friendly. Use it to check ink levels, users manual and make adjustments in print quality, paper type and size. The printer also can run on the default settings, which are fine. Print speed and quality in black and white is exceptional. A twenty dollar b/w cartrige lasts long enough that I consider it a bargain. Printing photo quality pages takes some time but the results are nice enough for me to frame and hang on my walls. The optional photo print cartridge, which replaces the black ink cartridge, is recommended for photo quality prints. This printer does a better job on color photos than my HP P-1000, which I purchased just after the price dropped from $399.99 to $299.99 a few years back. The 5500 sends a pop up screen when the cartridge is about to run out of ink. A nice touch. Changing ink cartridges is a snap. In 5 months I havn't had a paper jam or improper paper alignment. My only complaint about this machine is the loud paper feed. For $129.00, the HP Deskjet 5500 is a fine printer and, I believe, a good value. I'd buy another one and I recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Presently is one year old and doesn't work. All the lights flash indicating a problem. Indicates it is out of ink which is isn't because I have installed two new black cartridges trying to get it to work. Users guide says to reboot it which doesn't help. It doesn't pick up the paper. Only God knows what is wrong with it. It appears it is cheaply make which I guess it is. I would not recommend this printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Paper Jams and Feed Problems Galore!!!
This printer was a real disappointment. I loved the print quality of photos. However, this printer is LOUD compared to my old 722c, which lasted nearly 5 years. Not only that, it was cheaply made in comparison. After about a year and a half the thing just went crazy and the paper would not longer feed through. It makes a loud crazy sound then doesn't pick up the paper. Customer support is non-existent. I tried to send an e-mail rather than PAY for support and I received a file not found message. This sucks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Scrapbookers!
If you are thinking of buying this printer because of the capability of printing on 12 x 12 inch paper for scrapbooking, DO NOT PLAN TO USE IT TO PRINT PHOTOS. The photo quality is actually worse than my old 3-color, HP 700 series printer. The horizontal markings from the printing are so bad it looks like you have printed on corragated cardboard. The image quality is fuzzy, and the colors are not true-to-life.

1-0 out of 5 stars absolute lemon
I probably have as much experience with 11x17 capable color printers as anyone in the world and I've got to say this is easily the most difficult and unsatisfactory printer I have ever dealt with. HP's last 11x17 product (1220c) had amazing print quality, was faster, and lasted me for 3 solid years of heavy use. By contrast, the 9650 is MUCH slower for "best" print setting and MIND BOGGLINLY SLOW for its "maximum DPI" setting...try 35minutes for an 11x17 plot. Unacceptable. Not to mention that my printer is now broken and wont print at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, slow, and an ink hog as well
I don't normally buy HP printers but was looking for a speedy model for use in a work environment and was told this would be a good fit. First off, if there's a slower printer on the market today I would be amazed. My 4 year old Epson 880 will print 3-4 pages per minute faster than this unit, and the prints look far better on the Epson. Have not found 13x19 paper so I cant say how this works. The ink cartridges run out too fast to be of any use. For the price there aren't any good reasons to buy this unit. There has to be better large format printers out there, keep looking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Always a fight to get a print out of it.
I love my HP deskjet 5550 printer for high quality photo prints. The 9650 sounded like the same system with a larger paper size. It's not. HP doesn't make 13x19 photo paper and this printer doesn't want to feed other brands. The ink consumption is high, but the ink cartridges are the same size as for smaller printers - a $60 set of cartridges is good for about 10 pics! When the ink cartridges are low, annoying warning messages pop up on the screen of my WindowsME PC and come back again as soon as I dismiss them (have to find the Task Bar icon, right click and pick EXIT) - this is Bill Gates kind of helpful! Right now I can't print or communicate with the printer because it's busy flashing low-ink error lights (on my 5550 I can get many good 8x10 pics out after the first ink warning). It's a fight to get a print every time I use this printer. If you like Epson colors (I don't - they're too red for me) get one of theirs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Not the best printer on the planet, but definitely a good value. I don't need a color laser or a photo printer, so it works for me.

Print quality is good for schematics, drafting, and other vector based images. Much better than a more expensive Cannon that I am replacing. I haven't tried it on any raster images, and probably never will. I also have no idea what kind of photo printing capabilities it has, because I just don't care.

Setup is very easy, it took me a total of a half hour to unpack the printer, assemble it, run cords, install the drivers on the host PC (which has the same speed processor as the printer), and install the drivers on another PC, and have the whole thing networked. Everything worked fine right out of the box on the first try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Don't buy this Printer!
I got this printer for large format printing. What I got was a large format headache. I spent an entire day trying to install this following all the instructions, I even called HP and they couldn't help me. I was using all the specified equipment, however one thing they didn't warn me about was you cannort share this printer without the additional purchase of the HP network server. After boxing this up for return I also noticed that this printer had already been returned once. It had two packing slip pouches, mine and someone else's. Bottom line - DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!! It cost me a day of work and all the shipping charges.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this printer!!!
I needed a large format printer for my small business, so I got online and reviewed seveal hp printers, and I "chatted" with one of their online reps. I was told this was the best printer for my needs. Little did I know that in order to use it I would have to redo my entire network setup. Well, after a full day of trying everything they told me to do, I am MORE than happy to PAY TO SHIP IT BACK!!!
DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't ever buy this printer
I wanted a large format printer and so i was deciding between Canon, Epson and Hp. Finally, i decided to go with Hp, since i was using Hp officejet v40 all-in-one for about 3 years with no problem. I got Hp 9300 about 40 days back and suddenly today it stopped working. I just took 4 printouts in last 40 days and that it...I called the customer service and reported about the problem. According to them that printer was no longer going to work and i have to pay from my own pocket to ship it to california where they would repair it and send it back.
If you have a choice don't go for this printer. You will end up getting frustrated like i am now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Printing Quality
Pro: The printing quality is exceptional. Better than any other deskjet printer I have tried. Especially if you set the quality mode to "best". Comes with "myPrintMileage" that keeps track of the printer usage and helps you plan the purchase of ink. ***Supports 13x19 paper size***.
Extremely easy to install.Took me 5 mins to set it up, and start printing on both Win XP and 2000 machine.

Cons: If you are printing "Best" the printing process is kinda slow. A full-colored 11x17 image took 1.25 mins to print.

Overall: An exceptional printers for the best price. I would highly recommend it. The very best printing quality. ... Read more
