The coupling ring let's you attach a second filter holder allowing you to use more than three filters at once. You can also orientate square filters in different directions. Or move a Center Spot filter father away from the lens for a larger circle. Or other filters that are best used when placed far forward like Pastels , Diffusers and the Pre-shaped Frames to name a few. It is Not for use with wide angle lenses. The Coupling Ring will also attach to the Modular Hood (225)

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for outdoor photography
If you are an outdoor photographer, this filter is a must for your collection. The gradual grey allows you to get the correct exposure for the sky and land. For example, if you are shooting a sunset (or sunrise) it is easy to correctly expose the sky, living the bottom part of your picture underexposed and almost black. This filter will help in these situations by giving both parts of your picture the proper exposure.

The filter itself comes in a protective, plastic case that is well secured. You could throw it in your camera bag and not worry about it accidentally opening.

FYI - this filter is part of the Cokin P series, which are a bit bigger than their A series and designed for wider angle lenses. If you aren't sure what size lens you are going to be using the filter with it is probably a good idea to be safe and go with the P series. In any case, there is plenty of information on Cokin filters to be found around the web. One summary can be found at ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neutral Density
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. They have four main uses:

1 To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars.

2 To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background.

3 To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations.

4 To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure. Neutral Density factors:

Cokin 152 (exposure adjustment = approx. 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2) Cokin 153 (exposure adjustment = approx. 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4) Cokin 154 ("P" series only; exposure adjustment = approx. 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8) ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Shaped Frames
These filters allow you to concentrate on the subject itself and eliminate all unnecessary background detail, Don't use them for all subjects, only those that lend themselves to the effect. Use them for portraits, nudes, still life, landscapes or anytime you want to suppress unwanted background detail and to capture the spirit of the subject.

Helpful hints : Each of the five Pre-shaped frames comes in two sizes to match different subjects and lenses. Don't use super wide-angle lenses. The smaller the lens aperture (and the further the Pre-shaped frame is from the front of the lens) the sharper the cutout shape. The distance between your lens and the Pre-shaped frames can be varied by using a Cokin Modular Hoods (255) and the Coupling ring(308). Also, the lighter the subject or background itself the more pronounced the edge of the cutout will appear. These frames can be combined with most of the Cokin system filters, especially Diffusers, Pastels, color filters of all kinds, etc. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars P694 Sunsoft
The Cokin Sunsoft filter is similar to the Cokin Softwarm (#696) filter except that the Sunsoft has a warmer tone. As such, it is also good for portraiture or any scenario where the photographer wishes to add additional warmth and diffusion to the image.

Attaching a Cokin Sunsoft filter onto the lens can enhance the picture in many ways. First, the entire picture looks like it is being flooded with sunlight and thus the skin tone becomes warm and pleasing. Second, a close-up of the subject may expose the true 'texture" of his/her face. The filter can create a soft focus effect to smooth the face. ... Read more

Has a clear spot in the center which has no filter effect. The surrounding area is colorless with diffuser effect. This means that the subject in the center of the picture is reproduced clearly while the surrounding area which is often distracting is changed, usually colored or darkened. The main area of use is for portraits. The transition from subject to background, and also the size of the clear circular area, depend on focal length and aperture. The transition is more gradual when the aperture is opened wider. The circle becomes larger as focal length is increased. The circle becomes larger and less clearly defined if the filter is placed further forward. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cokin 160 Linear Polarizer
If you don't have a polarizer, stop reading this and get one! I use a polarizer on almost every shot with a blue sky. Without a polarizer, blue skies appear a tepid, light blue on film; with a polarizer filter, they come out in a rich, deep color. The filter works by cutting out reflected glare and it's also useful for water (lakes, ponds), window glass, and tree leaves. A polarizer is more expensive than most other filters but worth the investment.

Regardless of the type of shooting you do, a polarizer is the most useful and versatile filter you can own. It's a very visual filter with which to work: As you rotate it in its mount, the effects are immediately noticeable. A polarizing filter can deepen the color and contrast in a sky (the most intense effects are always 90° from the sun or light source), eliminate glare from wet or reflective surfaces and cut through atmospheric haze to increase clarity and contrast in a scene. Since the effect of a polarizer is most pronounced when it is used perpendicular to the light source (the sun usually), try this trick... Make an "L" with your thumb and forefinger. Point your forefinger at the sun and your thumb will point in the direction that the polarizer will have its greatest effect. You can rotate your thumb around the axis of your forefinger, pointing the lens in any of these directions will let you take full advantage of the polarizers capabilities. Polarizers have little or no effect when they are used in the same direction as the light source.

Polarizers come in two varieties: Linear 160 and Circular 164. Each has the same effect visually; the difference is just in the way they polarize the light passing through. If you own an auto focus or auto-exposure camera (basically any modern camera), use a 164 Circular polarizer, which won't interfere with its automatic functions. ...

These frames can be combined with most of the Cokin system filters, especially Diffusers, Pastels, color filters of all kinds, etc. ... Read more
