Amazon.com Product Description

Get classic with the Vivitar V3800N, a 35mm SLR camera with a 28-70mm zoom lens packed with features ideal for aspiring photographers. A bright viewfinder with split-image focusing and three-LED display makes composing shots painless and easy. The depth-of-field preview and multiple exposure settings provide the fine-tuning control that great photographers demand.

Film loading is manual with the traditional single-frame advance, and a safety mechanism prevents double-frame advance or double exposures. The camera is also equipped with a hot shoe so you can easily connect a flash unit for more light. The self-timer has a 10-second delay, useful for taking group photos or self-portraits. Weighing barely over a pound, the V3800N is an easy carry for photographers on the go. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewel in the dust! The real professional camera!
I was looking for a replacement for my trusted but worn out
manual Pentax K-1000 SLR.
Its spare parts and repair costs became very prohibitive.
I didn't want to buy used and old camera for the reasons given above.
I've tested at least fifteen different modern professional SLR's.
I stopped experimenting only when I came across this Vivitar V3800n camera.
I was amazed by the quality of the pictures and reliability of its mechanics.
This camera has all features needed in professional photography.
Depth of the field preview, wide range of the film speeds B-1/2000,
split image focusing, multiple exposure button, flash socket and direct Xcontact.
I completed two photographic seasons with this camera and purchased the second
one of the same model to keep it as a spare.
All my pictures selected and sold for publishing in the magazines and journals
I'm contracting with, were performed using this professional camera.
I can use all set of lenses left from my old Pentax with Vivitar 3800n camera
'cause they have the same K-type mount.
...
This is a truly professional grade camera ...!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great camera, poor lens
I purchased this camera as my first SLR to start learning photography.

The Good: The camera body is excellent. It has all the features one needs for manual photography including metering, depth of field preview, and multiple exposure.

The Bad: The lens is slow (f3.4). Unless the scene is very well lit, you'll find yourself shooting at f3.4 with a slow shutter speed almost all the time at ISO 100, even with a tripod. Also, I have never been able to achieve a sharp photograph with this lens, even at mid-range apertures (f8 and f11). At first, I attributed this to inexperience and poor technique. But as soon as I started shooting with a used Sigma lens, the difference was astonishing. I finally know what a sharp photograph looks like.

Overall, I would not recommend this camera package. The camera body is excellent, and is worth buying separately. However, the poor quality lens is not worth it. You will be much better off purchasing a used lens. The lens that comes with this camera can be very discouraging for beginning photographers.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this camera
I bought this camera for a beginners B&W photography class, and although it's basically the bottom of the line, it's a great little camera. All of my pictures came out clear, unless by my beginners error, of course. It's light weight and very easy to use. I'd reccomend this camera to anyone who wants a good SLR, beginner or non.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those of us who love the essentials...
I love, love, love this manual camera. Personally, I feel that a lot of the bad reviews stem from the fact that some reviewers have skewed expectations for the V3800--it would probably be best to pack your cute digital point-and-shoot for Aunt Edith's party, for instance.

Don't get me wrong--it's the photographer, not the camera that produces a great picture--but this is definetely a device for those of us who are trying for "art", not the family scrapbook, and prefer not to be encumbered by extraneous settings.

I'm not saying I'll never come back to my cute little Rebel EOS(there's something to be said for not having to manually wind your film!) but it's wonderful to be able to set your exposure with a few little dials. Much faster than having to sort through the all the digital silliness. And who really uses that "Night Portrait Mode" anyway? Not I.

Of course, there are some flaws. The flash sync only goes up to 125 and the body is on the heavy side compared to the featherlight cameras produced these days. But even these "flaws" are easy to ignore; I can live without a fast flash sync, as I'm not one for sports photography and prefer ambient light; I also find that my camera shake is greatly reduced now that I've got something to grab on to.

Buy it!! Makes you feel like Brenda Starr or Mickey Spillane, depending :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Want quality? Better keep looking.
I recently bought a Vivitar v3800N camera from a local, specialty camera store. After having the camera for less than 2 months and having shot only about 4 rolls of film the camera BROKE! I have taken extreme care with this camera and have not found a reason for it to malfunction. I will not recommend this camera to anyone.
I am not trying to be harsh or unfair toward Vivitar. I would just write this problem off as a fluke, but I have had two of these cameras and this exact same thing has happened....twice! If you are curious about the problem, the shutter is jammed, for some unknown reason, which I might add is quite expensive to repair. I will not buy another Vivitar camera. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for
I bought this camera back in July. I liked it, it took pictures just fine, was a good deal for $140.
But it let me down. In Feb. the zoom lens jammed. The first thing this camera does when you turn it on is pop out the zoom, so this turned it into a brick. It is very difficult to get a person on the phone and not voicemail. I sent the camera to Vivitar. They also make you send a check for $5 for return shipping! A month later, I received a replacement. With a bad flash, although I can see how whoever inspecting missed it, because the flash does a weak blink. Now in late April, I'm still waiting for them to send me a mailing label to return the bad replacement, because I've already paid shipping twice and should not have to pay again. I've given up on Vivitar and bought a Nikon Coolpix 2100.

What a great new toy for my electronics collection. The Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP is by no means a toy by nature. From the moment you remove it from the box, this marvel of the modern age will never cease to amaze you. It comes standard with features that cameras twice the cost fumble to compare with. The Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP is not a camera for the faint hearted but more so for those who live life on the edge. So dont waste anymore of your precious time on the other brand digital cameras but bring the digital world to life with your Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP digital camera. Cheers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Vivitar 28-300 lens for Nikon AF
We own this lens for several years using it on Nikon F70. I was very disappointed with the over-all quality (esp. sharpness) of the lens. Tamron 28-200 lens is supposed to be also on the "lower" end of the quality scale - I tried it once and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE compared to the 28-300. In other word: even the much critized Tamron 28-200 is better. Very likely a 28-300 even with reasonable compromise would unreasonably stretch the budget and perhaps the OEM of Vivitar (Vivitar does not have his lens factory) did the best they could for that money. I am curious, how good or bad is the 28-300 offering from Tamron. The Vivitar Series 1 IMHO does not deserve the "Series 1" name. I am affraid, in order to cover a long range with better quality one would still need 2 or even 3 lens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bargain Lens
Needed an inexpensive wide angle zoom, this fit the bill. I trust Vivitar products and this one hasn't let me down yet. Takes 77mm filters. Note: This lens is a true ultra-wide angle lens, and as such image quality will suffer if used with standard, inexpensive filters. When using filters, spend the extra money and get one of the ultra-thin models from Hoya or similar. Otherwise you will notice rounding at the corners on shots taken at 19mm caused by the overhang of the filters getting the way of the shot (called "vignetting"). Makes a neat effect if intentional, but can mess up your shot if not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good amateur zoom
Good, but not spectacular zoom. Very good sharpness when the aperture is closed to 8, or smaller vallues. Metal mount, plastic body. Worth the spent money.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT lens at a SUPERB price
I am an amateur photographer (read: take lots of pictures at parties, of the dog, on vacation etc.). Until I bought this lens, I had a 28-80mm (came with my Minolta XTsi) and a 70-210mm (bought when got camera) but I always wanted a wide-angle lens. Problem is that most wide-angle lenses are *very* expensive. (For instance, I searched for other wide-angle lenses when I bought this and the next closest one was $300!)

This 19-35mm AF zoom lens is perefect and works with Minolta and many other cameras. If you are not a professional you will NEVER notice the difference between this and a $300 wide-angle lens, so why bother spending more than you need to?

If you do buy this, pick up a basic UV filter (77mm thread) for it. Might as well protect your investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
Like others have said, this is a great lens for the price. It's not for professionals, but then I'm not a professional. I looked around at new and used camera stores, and even the fixed-focus wide-angles were out of my price range. With this lens, at this price, you get the product you're probably looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wide angle lens for the have nots
I wanted a wide-angle lens for some while, but they were just too expensive. Plus, I had never tried a 3rd party lens with my Minolta, and was not sure what to expect. This lens produced results that I found quite acceptable. Like any cheapie wide angle lens, it is prone to flare. Oh, well. The edges do not appear soft to me, as I believe someone claimed, but I have not made any really large prints. One major downer is the very dull unimpressive looking plastic case. The picture at least looks like aluminum. The real thing does not. Also, I have not taken any pictures in the 30-35mm range (I have an expensive lens for that). If your Maxxum is one with a panoramic mode the pictures you take at 19mm will look pretty cool. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good buy for the Novice
The Vivitar V4000 camera is a modern-day entry-level SLR. The K-mount lens mount was developed by Pentax and incorporated in the extremely popular Pentax K-1000 released in the 1970s and sold as new until being discontinued by Pentax recently. The K-mount is pretty much THE lens mount for manual focus lenses and is shared across several manufacturer's lines. What could have been better would be an aperture setting below 3.5-- the fact that the lowest aperture is so high makes it difficult to get good exposures in all types of weather without lowering the shutter spead or using a tripod, something that's not always handy. I found this camera easy to learn and operate. It has a great choice of shutter speed and also has a light meter that will help create great exposures, its light-weight makes it easy to handle, and it's fairly inexpensive.

If you are just getting into cameras, get something else...but if you have been with cameras for a while, even if you are a novice, this is a good buy. Good camera for on the go people. Hope this review was helpful. Ciao,

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate & Durable SLR without the high price!
Use this camera for learning photography or for shooting as an amateur especially if you want to go into manual mode for more creative photographic effects. The solidly constructed body and 35-70 macro zoom lens are both made in Japan. The camera accepts standard/widely-available K-mount lenses and Vivitar flashes. The focusing is very easy and the zoom mechanism is very smooth. This enabled me to take high quality photos without the need for expensive lithium batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this little camera
So there I was... a college guy who wanted to do photography of the world around him and become the next (insert famous photographer) but had failed a class in high school and wasn't ready to drop a ton of cash on something he would be sick of in the next week.

At first, I thought this was a piece of junk. It's lightweight (almost plastic body) and didn't look like it would hold up in my klutzy lifestyle. I WAS WRONG.

This camera has traveled accross the country, been in rain and snow storms and still held up with the best cameras out there.

The only drawback is that it's a manual camera. Which means, you need to know what you are doing to take good shots. I had no idea what was going on when I first started and now I am shooting pictures that hang in galleries and have won all sorts of awards.

I will tell you that I did buy more lenses for it - and you know what! They were darn cheap on those auction websites.

This is the best camera you are gonna get for the amount of money you are spending. Don't be fooled by it's low price either. I love mine, and am hesitant to trade it in for anything else.

...

2-0 out of 5 stars WARNING
I like to think that I would love this camera, IF I had it yet. I ordered the thing on the 7th of September, paid for two day shipping, and still haven't recieved it on the 15th. Just let this be a warning to you the consumer. Read what you are paying for. Make sure 2-day shipping acutally means 2-day shipping. If not, write an email, request an apology and a refund, and if all else fails take your business elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars vivitar v-4000
I got this camera for a few reasons, the main being it fit my budget. I've really enjoyed this camera for the last 2 years i've had it. However there have been some problems. for one the film hasen't always transferred(so i shoot a whole roll just to find it wasn't carrying). Even though there are problems, i've liked this camera quite a bit. One thing i really like is how light and sturdy it is. I've dropped it and hit it against rocks yet by looking at it you couldn't tell. All and all i would say this is a pretty good camera, esp. for a beginner. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars One-Time Use Cameras Better Than This One!!!!
I received this camera as a gift and am VERY disappointed with it!!! Pictures taken outside were ok at best, and the ones taken inside, even with alot of lighting, are very dark and hard to see. I would recommend buying a disposable camera before buying this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs!!
This camera is horrible! I was going away to live in Eastern Europe and didn't want to be bothered with looking for a camera there so I bought two!! Two months later the winding mechanism had broken on both of them. I was so ticked. I thought maybe it was some kind of super fluke but then I talked to some other people who had bought the same camera and their winding mechanism broke too. So my advice is spend another Ten bucks and by a camera that is going to work for longer than a month.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only recommended for outdoor pictures
I would only recommend using this camera for taking pictures outside on sunny days. Even taking pictures in a car when there is still daylight produces dark pictures. This camera just doesn't seem to do well inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are getting more for what you are paying for.
I had this camera in the past, it was the first camera my husband gave me for our anniversary, but it was stolen. When we saw the same camera in Amazon and we saw the price, we went for it right away. Even my cousin bought one, and she loves the camera too. The best thing is light weight, auto rewind and what I like the most is that I could have the dates printed on the pictures if I want to. Imagine how many pictures people have and don't have an idea on when was taken. The camera is a great gift and it is a great value. ... Read more
