RIGHT from the start
Seldom have I been so pleased with a purchase!

UNLIKE the Microtek scanner I previously owned that gave me nothing but aggravation from the git-go, I loaded the software, plugged the Epson 4990 in with the included USB cable and, using Photoshop as the platform, IMMEDIATELY scanned an 8 x 10 page of medium format negatives successfully.Eyeballing the colors, I did not think ANY correction was needed.I had NO PROBLEMS loading the software or with anything else.

I subsequently read the CD contained instructions and found that I had failed to use the 8 x 10 transparent media placement guide.It worked ANYWAY!

This scanner is particularly suited for "serious" amateur and professional photographers.It comes with negative holders for 35mm, 120 and 4 x 5 sheet film.In addition, as noted above, it will also scan the whole 8 x 10 inch area so you can do proof sheets from your transparent negative file pages.

I also scanned a music CD cover and liner, using Photoshop to convert the liner to black and white, and a 4 x 6 color photo.The scanner worked perfectly on all.The resolution of the four to six point type of the CD liner was crisp.This was a scan as a reflective image and NOT using OCR software.

Amazing to say the least!
I bought my R1800 two weeks ago and it's fabulous! I've been doing quite a bit of photo retouching in PhotoShop and was anxious to see some of my work in large format. The resulting output totally exceeded my expectations! I was also surprised at the speed at which such fine output was generated. I was somewhat concerned about the cost of maintaining an 8-color system as the cost of replacement cartridges ranges between $12.99 and $14.99, but I've done quite a bit of printing and the color levels have barely budged (and I use the setting for the highest print quality). This is truly a great printer for digital photographers, scrapbookers, and PhotoShop enthusiasts like me. It's an incredible piece of equipment.

printer arrived dead
I ordered the eagerly awaited R1800 on first day of availability from Amazon.When shipped, item arrived dead.Printer carriage did not move into position, soink cartridges could not be loaded. Defective printer was returned to Amazon (which promptly credited the return, including postage).

On this single anecdotal incident, I do not fault either Epson or Amazon. Stuff happens.Perhaps damage in shipping.I merely provide this information for consumer information, in case other buyers have the same problem.

Beats any lab prints
The Epson R1800 is built like a tank.Upon first inspection out of the box, you will be suprised at it's size.Set-up out of the box was a breeze.About 10 minutes of unwrapping everything and software installation and I was ready to print.

The first prints came out amazing.I used to work in a one hour photo lab with a Noritsu QSS-3011, basically the Cadallic of mini-lab printers.The best of the best.I am college student majoring in photography so quality is #1 to me.I would always print my pictures at the lab and fine tune each print so I would get the best.With this printer, I get nearly the EXACT SAME QUALITY.Which is nothing short of amazing considering we are talking about a lab machine that is in the costs of tens of thousands of dollars.The prints that I have printed from the R1800 rival the quality of that from the Nortisu lab printer.

The 8 inks provide a cost effective method instead of replacing one expensive color tank when just one color runs out.You can just replace whatever color you run out of.

The R1800 prints bordless sizes up to 13" in width.It can print panoramics from 4" to 13" from rolls of paper. Imgaine having a 13" by 44" panoramic on your wall!With the R1800, it's just that easy.

The R1800 can also print on CD's, which is a neat feature, but one that I probably won't use too much until I get ready to graduate and create portfolio CD's with my work on them.

5,760 x 1,440 optimized dpi resolution is what makes these prints so amazingly crisp in quality.

The speed of the printer is pretty impressive too.11x14's in under 3 minutes?4x6's in under 45 seconds?Yes please!

I believe the best paper I've used with R1800 is Epson's Premium Luster paper.It's semi glossy with a sheer luster to it that makes the color and contrast hold of the paper look amazing.

I'm in love!
I have owned many printers...but I have to say I love this printer the best so far. It's so versatile. The prints on Epson photo glossy paper look like they just came from the lab. I'm still amazed after two weeks.

Prints on coated inkjet CDs are a bit under saturated. Also if you want the best quality and water proof photos you have to use Epson paper.

This is a wonderful printer for photo enthusiasts and the geek who wants the novelty of printing on CDs. However if you do not intend to print on a regular basis do not buy this printer. The pigmented ink will clog the head with infrequent use.

I would give it five stars if it were a bit faster. I still love it though.

I'm BLOWN AWAY
I have been shopping for a high-end consumer printer for my wife for about 3 months now. My wife is into photo-scrapbooking, so high quality prints that last a long time are our main goal.

I had looked at the high-end consumer printers from Canon and HP, but decided against them due to reported ozone fading problems (Canon) and star-wheel marks on the HP 7960 which I saw myself on the test prints at the local retailer.

I was about to buy a high-end dye sublimation printer when I saw some reviews of the R800. Now that I've owned one, I have to say this is by far the best photo printer I've ever used.

It's FAST - 4x6's print in about 45 seconds
It does TRUE borderless prints (no tear-offs)
The colors are life-life and saturated
Pigment ink promises long life and freedom from ozone fading
And it's unexpectedly QUIET!
I've notice NO banding or digthring at all.
The gloss is excellent and comparable to glossy photo paper
Can print onto CD's (I haven't tried this)

Can take roll paper (but no cutter)

Consumables seem to cost about $40-$50 per 4x6, or $1.50-$1.75 for an 8x10, which is a bit high, but not out of line with competitors.

I HIGHLY recommend this printer. Prints made with the EPSON premium glossy photo paper are out of this world.

Awesome photo quality prints! Not the fastest printer for word processing, etc, but certainly fast enough. Multiple ink cartridges helps save $$ on ink. R800, along w/ Epson glossy photo paper = professionally developed-looking prints, that are waterproof as well !!! Can't go wrong w/ this printer. I use it for photo prints, as well as, a general all-purpose printer, which I have hooked up to a wireless print server in my home, for all to use. DVD/CD printing has also worked flawlessly since I got it (about 3 months ago) No problems. Just awesome!

Photos and CD/DVD Printing -- This thing is Awesome!
I have had my r800 for around two months now and let me tell you this thing is awesome (and I have had quite a few printers in my day).

CD/DVD printing is really why I bought it but the photos are top notch. I have printed over 300 Cd-R and DVD-R and they just look Terrific. I also have printed DVD Cases and 8x10 photos that just amaze me at the clarity.

Price for cartridges are still kinda of high (was supposed to be $8 each but they are $12-$15) -- Eight cartridges so if you want the most bang for your buck I think Canon has some nice choices(This can be expensive). Overall I feel this is the best photo and cd/dvd printer under $1000 --

Very pleased
I am very pleased with my Epson R800. This is my second Epson and I am retiring my HP photo printer for this one. I have had it for about 3 weeks and it is wonderful. Prints are gorgeous, very fast with printing documents and extremely quiet. My only problem is I cannot get it to properly print envelopes (#10). Could someone who owns this printer be of assistance? CD/DVD Printing Makes It Worth The Price Alone
When I first read about this printer in a computer magazine, I was immediately impressed by its functions and price point. CD/DVD printers cost $100's more and even then, they usually just serve that single function. Later that day, I went out and bought one.

The R200 not only prints directly onto the discs, but is also a quality photo printer. You can print out crisp images with that function as well as carry out normal day-to-day tasks like homework and other documents. It's great because the printer has an extra USB port on the front of the machine for easy hookup to a laptop. The software for the printer is easy to install and there really was no printer alignment necessary. It did all the work for me.

The only thing you really need to buy, if you don't already have one, is a USB cable because it doesn't come with one packed in the box. Yeah, I know. I was disappointed in that too, but the features made up for that. Speaking of features, in order to successfully print onto a disc, you must use an Ink-Jet printable disc. Otherwise, you'll have a disc with a pool of ink on it.

Not what it claims to be by any stretch
The good news.... OK it prints on white paper, and if you set it to its highest quality (slowest printing) it will turn out pretty decent photos. And on the off chance that you are able to load the CD/DVD tray into it exactly the way it wants, it will print on CD's relatively well.
Now for the real review of this printer: Text is abysmal, even on its best setting. I have a Canon i860, which in every way (text and graphics/photos) blows the doors off this Epson. Printing CD's which really is the ONLY actual reason anyone would buy this over ANY Canon, is a chore at best. You must print them one at time (choosing more than 1 copy craps out the tray alignment for the next copy, which brings on the error message) and it takes a REALLY LONG TIME. Don't get me wrong, the quality in "Best Photo" on CD's is pretty great.... but the hassle with the tray never being happy and the S L O W print speed is just not worth it. WAAAAAAAAYY better results are achieved using the Avery Afterburner kit and printing labels with ANY Canon printer. I had an Epson several years ago, and upon buying Canon, will never go back to Epson. The quality difference is measured in light years. But alas Canon has no CD printer in the U.S., only Europe. So if you're contemplating this as your primary printer, and just every once in a while will print to CD's... move on to another brand that is actually capable of printing clean black text. If you just need a printer to print 2 or 3 CD's a week, this will suffice.

Inexpensive brother of R300
Update of my first review below. I've now owned the printer for nearly three months and its everything I had expected. I don't use it for text so I don't know about its text quality, but its photo prints are awesome using Epson's Colorlife, Premium Glossy, and Heavyweight Matte papers which are good with the types of ink in this printer. Ink usage seems light. Its hard to estimate but I'd guess I've printed the equivalent of 70-80 4x6's and so far each of my ink cartridges seem to be less than half used. I chose the Epson not just for the print quality, which has not disappointed, but also for the cost of consumables. Check paper prices before you buy because you really do want to stick with the correct brand papers unless you really know what your doing. And DON'T use non branded ink if you really want pictures with accurate color.

I don't own this, but I'm ordering it today. It has exactly the same print engine and software as the R300 that's almost twice the price - I checked the specs at Epson. If you don't need the card readers or pictbridge, buy this instead. On the Canon printers you have to go to the i960 also close to twice the price to find a six color printer. Read Steve's digicams reviews of the R300 if you want to know how well this prints. The best buy out there. The inks alone are worth $70.

Didn't expect much but WOW!
I bought this printer and didn't expect much considering the price, $99.99 for a printer that prints on CD's and DVD's and supposedly a good photo printer too? Well, I figured that I could always return it if it didn't seem worth even the small price.

Boy, was I ever shocked!!! The first task I gave it was to print on a DVD that I burned. I couldn't believe the quality! Wow, was what I said and I didn't even have the printer set on the high quality. To say the least I was impressed. I found that the included software that you use to print on the DVD/CD works fine but is a little confusing but okay once you figure it out. Converting the printer from printing paper to printing on media takes about 10 seconds and is so easy that even the most inexperienced user will master it quickly. All you do is flip down a plastic hinged part and you're in business. You then lay the media on the included tray, slip it in and start printing, and you won't believe the quality.

I bought this printer to print on CD's and DVD's exclusively as I have another printer for daily paper use. But I can see now I'll use it to print CD's and DVD's and for all my photo printing.

After printing on a few media, I decided to try the photo print. I put in an 8 X 10 photo paper and printed a photo out. I tried the borderless option which this printer offers. I was again impressed in the quality printing out on photo paper.

After all of this printing, my cartridges are still plenty full so it doesn't seem too greedy on the ink use. I did increase the print color correction to +1 while printing on a DVD and it's plenty dark enough.

Printing directly on media is really nice and beats the heck out of printing labels and then sticking them on, hopefully straight. Finding printable DVD's was a little tough but I see they're becoming more common now. You can easily get them here on Amazon and a lot of other places on the net. I don't think it will be long until most all media are printable.

Once you print on the media, you'll want to keep this printer and never print a paper lable again.

Not a great value considering black and white problems!
Before you buy this printer, beware: if you run out of color ink, but just want to print black and white, too bad! The "black ink only" function doesn't work if there are any empty ink cartridges (the printer has 6 total). Epson says, "To keep the print head clear, the printer uses a small amount of ink from all the cartridges whenever it prints. Even if you set the printer software to print black only, some color ink is still being used."

So, if you just want to print that text document, best run to the store and spend another $50-$60 for color ink. Que ridiculo!

Installation problems for Epson 4870 USB 2.0 Windows XP
The scanner works fine, but slowly in USB 1 ports. When connected to the USB 2.0 hub, although the scanner was recognized by Windows XP, there was no response from the scanner, although on and properly connected. Several hours of uninstalling and reinstalling its software and downloading USB patches and updating drivers from Viaarena.com did nothing to solve the problem. If the problem isn't cracked in the next day or so, the scanner is going back where it came from.

Love This Scanner!
I scan only 35 mm black-and-white negative film (including C-42). Scanning at 4800 dpi, 16 bit I get beautiful scans with great detail (about 58 MB files). Love the automation of scanning 24 negatives at once. It takes only about 70 minutes. Scan quality better than a pro-photo cd and close to the quality of a drum scan.

Setup was easy. Build quality is good. I'm quite happy. Would highly recommend.

Huge Stability & Reliability Problems
I just received my Epson 4870, and have just spent a frustrating 12 hours getting this thing to work reliably.

My observations so far:

1) The hardward and drivers are very unreliable. Half the time, neither the Epson nor the Silverfast are able to communicate with the scanner. Turning the scanner off and on and rebooting the computer sometimes helps, but I sometimes I have to reboot multiple times in order to get it to work. I am using the USB cable that came with the scanner.

2) After upgrading to Silvertfast to 6.0.2 to get ICE support, the software simply stopped working, freezing Photoshop.

3) When I am lucky enough to get the scanner to work, the Epson software often quits halfway through the scanning process, citing an inability to communicate with the scanner. This is very frustrating, as I am scanning 120 film, which takes a good 20-30 minutes per slide (with ICE enabled).

4) The scanner is S-L-O-W. If you are scanning medium format film, be prepared to spend 30 minutes or more on each scan (not counting retries due to the unreliable nature of the scanner).

5) There is no way the resolution on this thing is 4800 DPI. Although I haven't been scientific about it, my guess is the real resolution is closer to 2700 DPI.

6) The scanner does not come with a carrier that supports 120 film longer than 12 cm. Although I knew going in, I would have liked to have a carrier that accepts longer film strips, because I also shoot using a 6x17 panoramic.

7) Epson technical support is 9-6 Monday through Friday only. I work during the week, so my chances of getting any support from Epson are close to zero, unless I decide to take a day off work.

I am very unhappy with this purchase, and will be looking into returning my scanner back to Amazon, probably replacing it with a Canon 9900.

Ink Sucking Box on my Desk
Prints great and is quiet. Sucks ink like a hungry baby on a bottle.

20 8"x10" prints = $100+ in ink. Epson would give this printer away for free, but they're smart enough to know that buyers would suspect a catch. I know - charge the buyer for the printer AND continually drain there wallets in ink expenses.

Epson doesn't make money on printers- they make money on repeat sales of ink. To make more money on ink they make a printer that blows through it. A WIN-WIN for Epson! Hoo-ray Epson!

Oh....but like I said, it does print nice...but should't it anyway?

Outstanding Photo Printing
I am VP of Technology for a large professional photo company (not Epson) and I highly recommend this printer for home digital photo reproduction. With Epson ink and Premium Glossy Photo Paper the results are stunning.

With each ink cartridge replacable separately you no longer need to replace a $25 cartridge just because one color ran out. Individual color cartridges are about $12, although black costs more. Although not cheap, the quality of the Epson supplies are worth it. Off-brand inks and papers do not last anyway.

Great Photo Printer
I used a Lexmark printer until it finally died and replaced it with a the epson 6 ink tank printer which I found to have much better print quality and ink use has been great. I have printed over 200 4x6 borderless prints and less than half the ink in the color carts is gone. I also use the best settings for printing. highly recommend this printer for amature and professional photographers. the prints are photo lab quality for a fraction of the cost. It seems to work great for scrapbooking as well.

great image quality
Don't know what Gideond is talking about in his/her review. Ink lasts a long time and since it is individual carts, it is much more economical than HPs 3-colors in one cart. Pictures are phenominally vivid, especially if you use Epson premium glossy paper and at $15 per 100 sheets of 4x6, it will not bankrupt anyone. IMHO, print quality is better than photo lab and I have compared results. Overall, a steal at $170 with six carts included. Even if you only keep it a few years, it will still prove to be a bargain. A pox on all of the negative comments.

Has its good points but the bad points outweight them.
First the PROS:
1) excellent print quality on both paper and CD/DVD media.
2) Has card readers built in and ability to capture directly from it's own USB port from devices such as a digital camera.
3) card port can be used in passthrough so it acts just like a normal card reader.
4) fairly quiet overall.
5) not a bad price for the printer itself and you can get the R200, same printer without card reader basically for about $100.

But the Cons:
1) Ink costs a fortune for it and I have yet to find a generic ink that will work all that well in it. Carts are very difficult to refill.
2) Sucks up ink like cheap wine. It prints light compared to some printers so you have to set it to darken the print, using more ink in the process, if you want a true to color picture and the ink drops rapidly.
3) When you replace a cart it drops the others by about 1/10 of the meter for no reason at all. Once more way for epson to milk more ink money out of you.
4) reports ink is out far before its really gone, forcing you to use a third party utility to trick it into letting you use all your ink, and that utility can damage the printer if you aren't careful with it.
5) I've noticed some streaking from the black head on almost every cover I've printed.
6) It likes to catch the front corners of the paper and ink them black by accident. I guess because it doesn't secure the front edge before printing. This may be why I'm getting streaking too. its possible the black head is screwed up from the corners of paper poking into it.
7) takes forever to power on when you want to use it.
8) Draft printing is horrible. It comes out very light, unlike the HPs which still look good in draft mode.

Overall it gives good prints but has too many drawbacks for me. I've gotten to just using it for DVD/CD and some photo work. I'll get an HP for text and other photo work and save the fortune I'm spending in overpriced short lived ink. ... Read more

5-month Review: 99.9% Perfection
My original review is further down, written a few days after setting up the printer. I'll now relate my 5-month experience.

The machine has been flawless. It's one of the best experiences I've ever had with an electronics device, and I am a gadget freak. I've printed approx. 30 greeting cards and 200 photos, from 4x6 through 8x10. Photos copy extremely well with the flatbed scanner, and I use it to make accurate copies of originals. For even better results, tweak your original photo on the computer and print it using your favorite image editing software.

You may rarely use the negative-adapter, but if you only have a negative and need a print, it is a godsend. High quality scans, for sure.

One ink cartridge just fell under 20% full (light Cyan), so the ink lasts a long time. You can find great deals on original Epson ink on the web (try Amazon first). I bought a whole set of refills on the cheap.

I mainly use it to print digital photos (4x6 mostly) from my Canon S400 Digital Elph, and to print greeting cards. I make remarkable cards for pennies compared to $2 - $5 at the greeting card racks.

Paper: Extremely high quality prints on Epson, HP, Kodak and Ilford Galerie photo papers. I love Ilford paper. You can find great deals online for photo paper. 200 sheets of high gloss for under $20. Don't penalize yourself on quality - get the high gloss.

I have a minolta 11x17 b/w laser printer, so I don't use the RX500 for most document printing. Toner is cheaper than ink, and laser is faster than inkjet, especially for long documents.

The Epson RX600 recently came out. Same as RX500, but has an LCD preview window. Handy if you print right from the digital card reader. You can get an external Epson LCD for as low as $18, so the extra $100 for the RX600 is a bit tough to swallow. Deals are popping up on the RX500. It's still the best value of any multi-function device.

I was looking for a color printer, as I only had a b/w laser printer. Since I have owned digital cameras since 1999, it was time to get a photo quality printer. I Decided I wanted it to scan and copy as well. The multi-function device (MFD) was much better than in previous-generation products. It had to have separate ink cartridges (better value on ink), which ruled out HP, and almost everything but Canon and Epson devices.

After exhaustive research and showroom testing at a local retailer, I bought the Epson CX6400. Great value. It was a 4-ink system (not 6), but the DuraBright inks were getting pretty good reviews. I stayed up until 1am playing with my new toy. On premium glossy paper, the prints were very good. However, they had a matte, or maybe a semi-gloss cast to them, even on the best glossy paper. Other photo printers (Epson R300) delivered a glossier, crisper photo-processing feel to them. I could live with that for the price and features the CX6400 had. The 6-ink system was not in the cards for me if I wanted a MFD flatbed device.

The next morning, while reading the Sunday paper, I saw an ad for a brand new MFD by Epson. Just came out. It was the RX500. Here's the bottom line. It has the same 6-ink system and print engine as the beautiful-printing R300/M, and it is a flatbed MFD. Nirvana!

I exchanged the unit the next morning. Wow! The printouts are just like a photo lab with my 4 megapixel shots. Even my older 2 megapixel shots looked great.

You can do almost everything on the device without a computer, as it has card slots for almost every media type. When you print from the computer, the software lets you tweak the quality even higher.

Liked the Epson CX6400. Love the RX500. The RX500 is the best of both worlds...

The 4x6 prints look incredible on premium glossy paper, and very nice on plain, bright paper. 8x10 and 8.5x11 also look great - just like a photo lab. And you can print borderless prints, without perforated paper. Ideal!

Speed is pretty good. Larger prints, and highest quality obviously take longer to print, but it's well worth it. Surf the web while you are waiting.

The bundled imaging software (PhotoImpression) is easy to use and does a great job. You can go from a digital photo to a beautiful print in minutes. The amount of control is overwhelming, but fortunately the standard setting doa great job. Go with the default settings unless you have a special need. Just set the paper type and size, and you are off to the races.

It's faster start-to-finish when you plug your memory card directly into the device. If you have a few minutes to boot up your computer, you'll have more control and you can bump the quality up a bit. Honestly, it was hard to tell the difference, though. Tech specs say there is a difference in resolution, but if I'm in a hurry, I print without the computer.

The Rx500 also scans and prints existing photos very well, as well as a magazine cover I used as a test. New on this device (and an exclusive) is a transparency and slide scanner. I scanned and printed from a 35mm positive, and a film negative. The quality is outstanding. Now I can zip out a print from any old negative or slide I have stored away in boxes. Way cool.

The only "negative" or tradeoff, is that the ink will smudge if it gets wet. That's the price you pay for the 6-ink system. As long as you get your prints into a photo album, or under glass in a frame, it is a non-issue. I'll take the tradeoff rather than settle for lesser quality in a smudge-resistant ink.

Buy the RX500. You truly get the best of all worlds. A superior photo printer, with the convenience and ultimate flexibility of a an excellent scanner/copier...

Not Ink Thrify, but Superb Photos
I wanted the best affordable multifunction photo printer I could buy, and I believe that I got it. Using epson borderless photo paper most people can not tell the photos were printed at home, or even from a digital camera, even with 5x7's, (I have not been printing 8x10's). USE EPSON PHOTO PAPER, DO NOT USE KODAK! The photo's I have been printing were taken with a Pentax Optio330, 3.34 megapixel. I can only imagine how good they would be with a better camera.

The photocopy functions work very well, just make sure you select the right setting, (photo, text, ect.). You can also scan negitives and slides. They come out great. It can scan at a resolution higher that my computer can handle, and I have a fairly good computer. Don't worry, you set the resolution and can get a very good scan with most computers.

It does go through a lot of ink, and the ink is on the expensive side. I have kept my old printer for text and everyday use. All in all, I love this printer!

*The photos on the much more expensive Kodak Premium Picture Paper looked like digital prints. It did not even look like I used the same printer. Plus the paper is not as glossy, much thinner, does not print borderless, and everybodys skin looked rather blue. Use Epson premium photo paper, it is much better, at least with this printer. Also Epson paper has the same look and feel as quality glossy prints from a photo lab.

Excellent for photos, decent for text.
I bought this printer after doing a thoroug search on the net. I rate is as quite good, but there are things that could be improved.

Software installed great; it was fast, and not too big.

Copying photos as a stand alone is excellent, but I noticed some greenish overcast. But I intent to scan everything into photoshop first, so I can live with that.

OCR software is quite effective and user friendly. I already like this one.

Cartridges are quite expensive, and it seems to be going through them rather quickly, but still acceptable.

The scanner is perfect. It has more resoulution than I can use.

The software works quite good, and it's user friendly, but there could be some more explanation in the manunal - for example I could not turn on the "dust and scratches option" in the scanner software, but I have to try higher resolution and see if the function becomes enabled.

The only major drawback I noticed was the text quality - I compared it to the printout from my HP cp 1700 at work, and Epson does not even come close.... mind you, the HP is a pricey unit able to print 13X17 pages. Having said that, the print quality is decent enough, but I feel a bit dissappointed.

I am using a USB 2.0, but the time it takes to start printing is not too impressive (on the other hand, some files are huge)

The newer model of this item I couldn't find anywhere or was priced too high. I was also going to go for the R800 but that was pricey or out of stock. I couldn't wait any longer to get a color printer to compliment my high res camera so I figured I get this one for now since it was pretty cheap. Well I love it so far! Pictures are better than photo quality with the photo and I am totally satified so far. I love it and it doesn't take up alot of space with the built in scanner.

Photos Look Fantastic
I was hesitant to buy this printer because of some comments I'd read at various web sites. For example, I'd read that the "DuraBrite" inks "can't do glossy". The CNET review, although praising this printer for all-around performance, doesn't give the C84 highest marks for photo quality and mentions visible dithering in pictures. After considering the printer's low cost, the low cost of ink for it, and the advantages of its pigment-based DuraBrite inks (water proof and long-lasting), I decided to buy one for photo printing. I also considered the higher resolution of the C84 compared to Epson photo printers selling for about the same price, and I took a chance that the higher resolution would compensate for the lack of the extra color cartridges "photo printers" use.

I think I made a great decision. The photos from this printer look fantastic. While it's true that you can't get >>super<< glossy prints from it, the prints on glossy photo paper aren't matte. I'd call them "semigloss", and I like them. I don't see any dithering problem, either. So far, I've used the C84 to print on Ritz Camera brand "Professional Photo Glossy Ink Jet Paper" (similar to Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper), "Epson Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper", plain paper, and the 2 sheets of "Epson DuraBrite Ink Glossy Photo Paper" included with the printer. Results are excellent on all these media - even plain paper. I haven't seen better results on plain paper. I even printed on the back side of the Epson Ink Jet Paper, and - I kid you not - it looks better there than on the front where you're supposed to print. The very slightly yellow back side adds warmth to the photo. There's no bleed through, so you can print on both sides of the Epson paper. I didn't try this on the plain copier paper because it was thinner, and you could see through the back too easily. I stuck a plain paper print under the water faucet and soaked it. As advertised, that had no effect on the ink. After drying, the paper was wrinkled, but the image looked fine.

I always put my best pictures in clear archival sheet protectors, and, behind such glossy plastic or glass, you'd never know the DuraBrite prints were not super glossy. Advertisements say the C84 can do border-free printing on "8x10" paper. I was pleased to discover that it can do so on 8-1/2"x11" photo paper as well. It can NOT print border-free on plain paper or ink jet paper - apparently, border-free printing requires thick paper - but it does get much closer to the edges than my old printer, leaving about 3/16" borders on the short edges and 1/8" borders on the long edges.

I'm a happy camper. Don't be afraid to buy this printer for photo-printing.

Ink problems make this printer very expensive
The quality of the print is not a problem; it's good. But it's not good enough to neutralize the expense and frustration caused by the requirement to replace ALL of the ink cartridges every time one runs out.

When the cyan ink ran out, I tried to print in black only. It would not.

I replaced the cyan ink, and it still would not print. It indicated it needed black. Back to the store, and I bought a whole set this time. After replacing black, it called for the other two. Finally, after replacing all, it printed again--in black only or in color. The ink was Epson ink. Epson Help just figured they all ran out together. Even the first time, I knew they wouldn't all run out, by coincidence, at exactly the same time.

This has happened twice more now, and I am replacing the printer. It will be cheaper. I will not want to risk another Epson product, although I liked them a lot years ago.

Printed great at first - then died
I bought my Epson printer with my new PC. It was loud and jerky, but the print quality was good. The factory ink cartidges have almost nothing in them, so you have to replace them pretty quickly. When I installed all new cartidges my printer quit printing in black. I contacted Epson and they indicated I might have to buy new cartidges again. I searched on the web and found there are thousands of people who experience the exact same problem I have and Epson knows all about it, but they won't fix it. My Epson printer, new as it is, is now sitting in the trash. I put my old HP 722C back on my desk and have had no problem with it ever. I will never buy another Epson product again. And from what I've read of other user's reviews they feel the same way. Epson is junk.

Great Photo Printer without the bells and whistles
I am very impressed by the photo quality this printer turns out, even with generic ink. My 4 megapixel camera's pictures come out BEAUTIFULLY on photo paper from this printer. It doesn't have the fancy features that more expensive photo printers have (card reader, preview monitor, etc.) but it gets the job done. I went an entire semester of college (read: many many many papers) on the double capacity black cartridge it came with. It's also very quiet. I highly reccommend this printer, and don't be afraid to put generic ink in- it's cheaper and just as good.

Worked fine at first, then declined
The printer worked fine at first, printing beautifully. Set up was a breeze. I've had the printer for several months now, however, and I've noticed the print quality slowly decline.

Epson CX5400 Rocks!
The CX5400 currently sells for $..., maybe less with rebates and other incentives. is it worth it? YUP!!

This badboy copies,prints and scans just like the older CX5200 model that was discontinued by Epson but it also does borderless printing and its quiet!!!

SETUP - a breeze, open up the box, remove all that funky tape, plug it in, insert the 4 cartridges, flip that scanner lock switch, install the software, plug in the usb port. Took me 5 minutes, no problems at all.

NOISE - Only noise this unit makes is when its first turned on, it initalizes and does all kinds of stuff, takes 2 mins, when its idle, its whisper quiet. When it prints, there is only the humm of paper being printed, not loud at all, the CX5200 made a horrible sound when it printed, they fixed it in this unit.

SPEED - print speed is very fast, b&w or color - no waiting for it to catch up. i printed 20 pages that came out before my coffee was even cold. Best photo printing is the slowest mode as expected, so be patient.

OUTPUT - paper comes out dry, text is rich and clean, looks like a laser printer. color is very sharp and crisp, no problems here. this unit does 8 1/2x11 borderless printing too, amazing. 5700x1440 dpi is very nice and durabrite ink comes out dry.

SCANNING - it scans 1200x2400 dpi @ 48bit which in english means your color or b&w scans will come out exactly as the original, i scanned a magazine page and my keys, no blurs or distortion at all, job well done epson.

COPYING - you dont need the pc to do copying, it does color and b&w copying just like a real copier would, enlargments/reductions/lighten or darken the image and zoom and # of copies, its all there. the scanning are is too small to handle legal size paper, but i dont think any of the multifunction printers can.

CONCLUSION - i give it a 5 stars, the CX5200 had paper loading problems-fixed here, it also had slow photo printing-fixed here. This unit also displays the ink levels in printer config or control panel and ink is a **lot** cheaper and lasts longer than any of the HP mfc's.

DISLIKES - only things for epson to work on, makes the power cord removeable to the unit so its easier to feed under a desk, put the usb port in back of the unit so the cable doesn't get bent, make the control panel on the printer a little bigger, and maybe add a sleep mode so it will use less electricity when idle for 10 mins or more.

There are tons of options to set in printer config, too many to explain here. Epson came out with this CX5400 model and the CX6400 model, personally, the CX6400 looked huge to me, 23" wide and wouldn't fit on my desk.

Still waiting for a review from zdnet or pcworld, wonder whats taking them so long ?

CX5200 and CX5400 uses the same ink carts...epson says black will last 1000 pages, and color around 300 pages give or take a few. I can tell you from experience, the HP2210 lasted 35 color pages and about 70 black.

Good job Epson... HP should be ashamed for charging twice the price for the same features and way overcharging for ink cartridges.

Great printer for a Mac
Those of us with Macs don't have a lot of options when it comes to printers. HPs don't work well, and the good Canon ones aren't necessarily compatible. So I was glad to see that the CX5400 was compatible with my iBook OS 9.2. And I'm happy to report that it's been perfect so far. Installation was easy, with only two small glitches. After putting in the ink cartridges, there was an error message, so I had to turn the machine off and turn it back on and the error message went away. And the poster/manual said if you have a Mac, to plug in the USB first, but there's a huge sticker on the printer's USB port that said don't plug in the USB first, so I didn't.

Print quality is excellent. When I print color documents, the colors are even truer than the ones I print on the expensive fiery machine at the office. (Haven't tried photo printing yet, as I'd rather do that online or at Costco.) Photocopying is easy. And I just tried the scanner today and it was so easy it was scary. I have Photoshop, so I import the document from there and save it to my hard drive.

I'm sorry that a few other people have had negative experiences, but I'm extremely happy with this all-in-one.

MOST HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE EVER!
Purchased this all-in-one BRAND NEW IN BOX through Amazon in June, 2004. Item once installed had perpetual scanner error due to various DEBRIS under scanner glass.
Upon reporting this to Epson, they proceed to ship me a REFURB to replace a NEW PRODUCT. The REFURB did not come with a USB cable, also had DEBRIS under scanner glass, and the print head was OLD thus producing AWFUL print jobs.
I have been a fan of the HP printer for over a decade, and tried another manufacturer at my partner's request. I will not pay two cents for an Epson printer, EVER.

Great Printer, Lousy Scanning Software
This is a great printer. It's fast, it does a good job, and the ink cartridges go the distance. The biggest flaw is the scanning software. IT IS TERRIBLE! You scan your image and you can get to it one time, after that it is GONE unless you save it on your hard drive. If you want to change image type (e.g. from .tif to .jpeg,) forget it. You have to start the scan all over again. If you are interested in a printer, this one is great, but if you scan often or are a beginner I would look elsewhere.

No Mac OS X fast user switching; poor ink flow; poor photo
Problem 1: Although Apple endorses and sells this product, it does not fully support Mac OS X. After many frustrating problems with error messages about scanning that would not go away, instructions from Epson support to unistall and reinstall drivers, quit processes, delete files, etc., I finally found someone in Epson support who admitted that the CX5400 does not support the excellent fast user switching feature of Mac OS X, and that he had no idea if/when a fix was planned.

Problem 2: I have had more problems with blocked ink flow on this Epson than on previous Epson printers. (This is the first I've had with three separate color cartridges.)

Problem 3: Despite its better specs, the photo print quality of this printer is (subjectively) poorer than on my last two Epson printers.

Minor quibble: This printer's start-up sequence is noisy, as is the "klunk" that acompanies the feeding of each new sheet. (This may not be a problem in the office, but is annoying in an open-plan home.)

I have seen several other reports of problems with the CX5400 and would NOT recommend it. After many years of Epson printers, I will be switching to H-P next time; Epson quality seems to me to have fallen off.
