Amazon.com Product Description

The Deskjet 9650 color printer offers impressive, photo-quality results with up to 4,800-optimized dpi using HP's PhotoREt IV and PhotoREt III technologies (for six- and four-ink printing, respectively). Now you can print laser-quality black text at up to 20 pages per minute and high-resolution color pages at 15 ppm, in addition to printing fade-resistant photos with true-to-life colors.

An adjustable tray accommodates 11-by-17-inch paper, and the printer will even produce borderless images--great for pictures and postcards.

Use four-ink printing for spreadsheets, presentations, and everyday business needs, then switch to six-ink printing for vibrant photos and fine-quality images. A low-ink indicator will warn you when replacement time is nigh.

To help you further simplify your work, the 9650 comes ready for optional two-sided printing and is compatible with wireless networking hardware through HP JetDirect accessories (not included).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Scrapbookers!
If you are thinking of buying this printer because of the capability of printing on 12 x 12 inch paper for scrapbooking, DO NOT PLAN TO USE IT TO PRINT PHOTOS. The photo quality is actually worse than my old 3-color, HP 700 series printer. The horizontal markings from the printing are so bad it looks like you have printed on corragated cardboard. The image quality is fuzzy, and the colors are not true-to-life.

1-0 out of 5 stars absolute lemon
I probably have as much experience with 11x17 capable color printers as anyone in the world and I've got to say this is easily the most difficult and unsatisfactory printer I have ever dealt with. HP's last 11x17 product (1220c) had amazing print quality, was faster, and lasted me for 3 solid years of heavy use. By contrast, the 9650 is MUCH slower for "best" print setting and MIND BOGGLINLY SLOW for its "maximum DPI" setting...try 35minutes for an 11x17 plot. Unacceptable. Not to mention that my printer is now broken and wont print at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, slow, and an ink hog as well
I don't normally buy HP printers but was looking for a speedy model for use in a work environment and was told this would be a good fit. First off, if there's a slower printer on the market today I would be amazed. My 4 year old Epson 880 will print 3-4 pages per minute faster than this unit, and the prints look far better on the Epson. Have not found 13x19 paper so I cant say how this works. The ink cartridges run out too fast to be of any use. For the price there aren't any good reasons to buy this unit. There has to be better large format printers out there, keep looking.

3-0 out of 5 stars Always a fight to get a print out of it.
I love my HP deskjet 5550 printer for high quality photo prints. The 9650 sounded like the same system with a larger paper size. It's not. HP doesn't make 13x19 photo paper and this printer doesn't want to feed other brands. The ink consumption is high, but the ink cartridges are the same size as for smaller printers - a $60 set of cartridges is good for about 10 pics! When the ink cartridges are low, annoying warning messages pop up on the screen of my WindowsME PC and come back again as soon as I dismiss them (have to find the Task Bar icon, right click and pick EXIT) - this is Bill Gates kind of helpful! Right now I can't print or communicate with the printer because it's busy flashing low-ink error lights (on my 5550 I can get many good 8x10 pics out after the first ink warning). It's a fight to get a print every time I use this printer. If you like Epson colors (I don't - they're too red for me) get one of theirs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Not the best printer on the planet, but definitely a good value. I don't need a color laser or a photo printer, so it works for me.

Print quality is good for schematics, drafting, and other vector based images. Much better than a more expensive Cannon that I am replacing. I haven't tried it on any raster images, and probably never will. I also have no idea what kind of photo printing capabilities it has, because I just don't care.

Setup is very easy, it took me a total of a half hour to unpack the printer, assemble it, run cords, install the drivers on the host PC (which has the same speed processor as the printer), and install the drivers on another PC, and have the whole thing networked. Everything worked fine right out of the box on the first try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Don't buy this Printer!
I got this printer for large format printing. What I got was a large format headache. I spent an entire day trying to install this following all the instructions, I even called HP and they couldn't help me. I was using all the specified equipment, however one thing they didn't warn me about was you cannort share this printer without the additional purchase of the HP network server. After boxing this up for return I also noticed that this printer had already been returned once. It had two packing slip pouches, mine and someone else's. Bottom line - DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!! It cost me a day of work and all the shipping charges.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this printer!!!
I needed a large format printer for my small business, so I got online and reviewed seveal hp printers, and I "chatted" with one of their online reps. I was told this was the best printer for my needs. Little did I know that in order to use it I would have to redo my entire network setup. Well, after a full day of trying everything they told me to do, I am MORE than happy to PAY TO SHIP IT BACK!!!
DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't ever buy this printer
I wanted a large format printer and so i was deciding between Canon, Epson and Hp. Finally, i decided to go with Hp, since i was using Hp officejet v40 all-in-one for about 3 years with no problem. I got Hp 9300 about 40 days back and suddenly today it stopped working. I just took 4 printouts in last 40 days and that it...I called the customer service and reported about the problem. According to them that printer was no longer going to work and i have to pay from my own pocket to ship it to california where they would repair it and send it back.
If you have a choice don't go for this printer. You will end up getting frustrated like i am now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Printing Quality
Pro: The printing quality is exceptional. Better than any other deskjet printer I have tried. Especially if you set the quality mode to "best". Comes with "myPrintMileage" that keeps track of the printer usage and helps you plan the purchase of ink. ***Supports 13x19 paper size***.
Extremely easy to install.Took me 5 mins to set it up, and start printing on both Win XP and 2000 machine.

Cons: If you are printing "Best" the printing process is kinda slow. A full-colored 11x17 image took 1.25 mins to print.

Overall: An exceptional printers for the best price. I would highly recommend it. The very best printing quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delighted
I have two computers and wanted to a network one printer for both. This proved to be the best solution! My only problem was that I run XP and forgot to shut off the firewall that blocks network activity. Once I got that sqaured away it worked like a charm! The print qulaity is excellent! Since each compuuter has a firewall product installed with the virus program there was no problem in turning off the built in XP one found in My Computer Properties.

4-0 out of 5 stars HP6127 in mixed environment
Purchased this printer online and performed install in mixed (i.e. Mac & PC) environment office using wizards on install CD. Installation was virtually automatic. Even our IT people has no complaints about it.

Have experienced no difficulties printing with either Mac or PC printing. I think this is a great printer for the price given the features (built-in networking, duplexing, etc.). It give good ouput at standard settings and great at normal and above. Of course as with most HP inkjets the ink is pricy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Macs using a Network
This printer prints very well but I wouldn't recommend it for the Macintosh OS (any Mac OS). I spent over 50 hours of troubleshooting and talking to their support team only to find out that this printer wouldn't print multiple digital camera pictures on a page using the network connnection. *I've been testing printers for the last 19 years.

The printer prints fine using the USB port but that defeats the purpose of buying a printer with a built in network card. They wouldn't take it back. I tested it on 5 different Macs without success but support said they couldn't duplicate the problem.

It works great on Windows XP.

No more HP products for me, ever.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some problems with MacOS X compatibility
This is great hardware! From Windows I can print on this printer from my office, with the printer at home behind NAT. The output looks great, and everything works as promised. However, MacOS X support (driver version 2.3) is flawed by the following problems:

1. On Jaguar, MacOS 10.2, the duplex implementation is ridiculous. If you print six copies of a four page document, you get side one on BOTH sides of three sheets of paper, side two on both sides of the next three, etc. This problem is fixed with MacOS 10.3 (Panther).

2. Problems in the design of the SNMP MIB it uses prevent MacOS connections when behind NAT, so to print remotely you need to disable the SNMP queries. This option is available on Windows, but is tantalizingly greyed out on the Mac.

3. Manual IP configuration is by address instead of name, so use in environments that use dynamic IP address assignment is unnecessarily limited. Again, not a problem on Windows.

4. Version 2.1 cannot get top margin correct. Be sure to upgrade to version 2.3 of the MacOS X drivers. Be sure to remove older installers from your system first, because the installer includes aliases that can accidently resolve to compoments in the old installer and really cause problems!

5. It complains about needing more ink LONG before the cartridges are empty. I did 250 pages of newsletters (mixed photos and black text) after it reported my ink was running low, before I saw any signs of running low in the printoutl. I can ignore the warning on MacOS X, but on MacOS 9 the warning is enforced by a making it stop printing in the middle of a page (wasting the page), spit out the paper, and put up a complaint about an "empty" cartridge. On Windows XP, I told it to ignore SNMP and it never complains about ink, ever.

Because it took so long after the printer was introduced to fix the MacOS X problems, I question HP's commitment to MacOS X, and advise against purchasing this printer for Macintosh users. However, it's great for Windows, and nice enough for a multi-platform networked house or small business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a network? Get this printer!
If you have a home network, you NEED this printer! Images are fast and clean, and ink is widely available. Even photos look surprisingly good for this standard printer. (Only problem with photo printing is that it is not borderless). But where this printer really shines is that it connects directly to your Ethernet network. Any computer on your network can print to it. No extra hardware to buy, no flaky print-servers, no printer sharing headaches, and no special cables -- just plug the Cat-5 wire directly into the printer and GO! (The confusing information about an "optional print server" is for a wireless network, which is totally unnecessary). ... Read more

I like this printer. It's just that it came with the software in Swedish and HP refuses to help...

Dont' buy it. NYET!

1-0 out of 5 stars Line Thickness Woes
We use this printer with AutoCAD. Our drawings use different line thicknesses, and the HP 2600 does not seem to recognize anything thinner than the standard width, it will print thick lines. I would think that with a printer of this caliber dpi would be able to print thin lines. We have contacted HP and they were no help in this matter. The printer will also grab 2 sheets of paper frequently - it's only a month old. We are very fond of HP products, we are just dissapointed with this printer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact, Great Deal, Fast Performance
At the "FastNormal" setting, the print quality is close to LASER quality while the speed is incredible. I upgraded from a Canon BJC-4000 that has pumped out thousands of pages for me since 1994 and has put me through grade school, high school, and a 4 year engineering university. If it (the BJC-4000) were a live person, I'd buy it a six-pack - so it doesn't come easy for me to say that the 3650 is a big step up from the BJC-4000.

I have not put the 3650 through any longevity tests, but installation, performance, and quality are superb. I ran into zero problems installing it on an XP Pro SP-1 PC, and didn't run into any problems sharing the printer over a LAN.

I did run into an annoyance:
When printing with just the black cartridge installed, it would always tell me that I'm missing the color cartridge.

Also whenever the printer attempts to clear the print head, it would blow out a huge wad of ink onto the pad on the left side of the printer. Each HP #27 cartridge is only 10mL (the BJC-4000's BC-20 was 22mL and would last me approximately 1000-1500 pages at draft quality text) so each drop that it wastes costs me a few dozen pages.

You must install the drivers FIRST before connecting the printer to your PC via USB. I've tested this printer on my Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop and my self-built AMD XP 2100+ PC. Both use Windows XP Pro. The printer also works flawlessly over a LAN.

After several weeks of testing I'd like to add the "X" button on the printer is a true godsend - it's for cancelling print jobs. Rather than going to the Control Panel to manually cancel a job, hitting that button stops the job and clears it from the queue w/o any problems over a LAN.

Also if you print over a LAN and the printer is OFF, it will turn on by itself. This is a big plus because I don't always have the luxury of working at the PC where the printer is physically installed.

The only complaints I have is that the paper loading mechanism sounds like someone banging on plastic pots and pans - it's very very loud!! Also it tends to gobble ink cartridge fluid rather quickly but it prints faster than the HP Laserjet V I have at work, and with the quality set at NORMAL or FastNormal, it rivals that of laser printers.

Overall I give it 5 stars out of 5 - if you know how to properly install USB devices on PCs then you'll get it to work. I wouldn't recommend installing it on an older PC that isn't running Windows 2000 or XP.

UPDATE: After using it for a longer period of time, I did in fact notice that the small ink cartridge capacity limits its maximum time for operation in an office environment.

The cost is not an issue since I found a bulk supplier of ink refills that would save me a bundle. What was important was the ease of changing cartridges (pull the lid and the cartridge holder comes into changing position) and the quality of printing w/ non-standard ink.

Make sure you clean the cartridge if you start to see lines in the print out. I noticed a strip of dried ink on the head unit and cleaned that off with some water and a tissue.

Overall the printer is STILL exceeding my expectations.

My impression of this printer:
Low price, Hewlett Packard quality + reliability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Deal Out There
This is a great printer. Its speed and quality is just as good as that of my office's laser printer. Its sooo easy to install with Windows XP. (I have XP Pro SP1.) It looks nice and the X cancel button on it is great. Just press the button to cancel a job, and without wasting that piece of paper like some do when you have to go into the print que on your computer. I only have three minor issues: 1. Came without USB cord, just a bit of a hassle. 2. The power plug is twice the size of a normal one. 3. Eats ink. (Ink cartrages are relatively well priced.) This printer is great! These few problems are far outwieghed by the benefits! Good luck with your search!

1-0 out of 5 stars mac incompatible
Your Mac computer might freeze after you have installed the software and push the restart button. HP customer service told me that the printer software is not compatable with all Mac computers. There is a problem with the engine or driver. I never used the printer and so cannot comment on its quality. By the way, I have a Mac Powerbook G3 running MacOS 9.2.1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy For Any Pack -Rat. Thank you Hewlett Packard!
This scanner is wonderful. I fell in love with this scanner at work. My experience with scanner wasn't good. I didn't like the quality and the flimsiness of the previous scanners but the HP DeskJet3650 is so easy to use and if you are a pack-rat like me you can scan documents on to a disk and depending on how you saved it you can go back and edited them. It is great for photo storing and you can edit and fix the quality of the pictures and scan on your "disk of picture memories" what you want. 10 Stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars A bargain printer...
I'd say this printer is good if you need reliability, and, unlike my old Lexmark Z53, it printed great quality text. Lexmark printers are cheap, sometimes not very reliable and they make their money on £30 cartridges - so, this one's great! It prints great quality photos and high quality text, although, one down side seems to be that the ink goes down quite quickly. Well... you can't have everything for £59.99! It doesn't come with a USB cable, but that didn't matter because I have 7 here! They can be ordered on eBay very very cheap!
Overall Rating: Brilliant for low-volume printing, students and small businesses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Massively impressive machine
I'm an unabashedly big fan of HP inkjet printers. I have found their color management drivers, not to mention their ease of connectivity, to be completely conducive to excellent output. The quality is obviously superior to HP's chief injet rival, Epson.

This printer is no exception. Aside from the somewhat obscure color cartridges (my local suppliers don't stock a lot of them because they're only used in three other printers), I've found nothing to complain about in the two months I've been using it.

The printer is truly whisper silent, and it's massively faster than my old HP 890. I print on odd sizes of paper, so I love the fact that I can now do special jobs without having to go to a service bureau to make tabloid and larger sizes. The onboard memory is sufficiently large to allow me to dump really complicated graphical files without tying up my CPU. As an example, a full-color, legal-sized flyer with multiple graphical layers used to take something on the order of 12 minutes to send to the printer and print. Now it's a matter of 3-5 minutes. True, some the speed increase is that this printer connects through a USB port, but I suspect that even if I hooked it up with the parallel connection, there'd be a massive improvement in speed. At any rate, I used to sometimes crash my computer if I tried to do smething else while a complicated project was printing. Now, nothing I do outside of starting a 3-D game will shake my system.

I cannot recommend this machine enough. However, you should take a look at the 1220Cxi version, just in case you need the added PostScript flexibility.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased for the most part
I am very pleased with the quality this printer does with photos and other printing projects. However, It does not print well with thicker photo paper. The paper gets jammed even when using the feed in the back of the printer like your supposed to. It is very frustrating and wastes a lot of paper doing this. Other than that its a great printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!
I love this printer. Finally, a printer that can handle large format. I can do an 11 x 17 poster or you can even go larger if you have the paper. I'm also able to print pages to my 11 x 17 leave behind piece that I leave with clients. The visuals are crisp and clear and it's faster than any printer I've ever had in the laserjet category. But I couldn't afford a color laserjet that handled 11 x 17. So for the price, this one is awesome. I used to have my leave behinds done at Kinkos but now I do them myself. Even with the ink costs, I save a bundle. And with the double ink cartridge, I don't have to change it all that often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best printer purchase I ever made
I have used this printer for four years and it still works perfectly. I prints photos on photo paper beautifully. I love being able to print 11x17, and friends and family ask me to print for them. I use this printer heavily but have only bought new cartridges once in four years. I often print using the print quality of 'Fast'. The 'Fast' option looks like 'Normal' for most printing except photos. This printer was worth the expense. I also have an HP LaserJet 4L that is still working after more years than I can remember, and it's still fast compared to many newer printers on the market.

2-0 out of 5 stars Works great....but only with light weight paper!
This printer does not load paper properly if it is anything thicker than 6 mil. All of the nice Photo Papers that are a bit thicker and produce wonderful color, do not feed into the roller properly, and the top portions of the photos don't appear. The color is fantastic, but who cares if your missing part of the photo?
You need a JetPrint Server for the tool box to work...(an additional $200 item)and the drivers are very poor. Standard paper feeds properly, but after spending $400 for one that can "do it all", I can't afford another for my photos! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with the HP 940C
I have owned this printer since Christmas ('01) and have had nothing but success with it. The print speed is great for text documents. I was also able to print great looking glossy slides for a poster presentation. The print cartridges seem to have a pretty good lifetime, as well. I haven't had any problems with paper jams. It has handled some documents with pretty hefty memory neeeds without locking-up too. Definitely, well worth the cost!

5-0 out of 5 stars HP 940C - best printer for the money
I've had this printer for a year, printed hundreds of cards, photos, orindary pages, etc. It's really a top-notch printer. Not completely perfect, mind you (I had one jam), but as near as you could dream of. I've also owned two different Epson printers, and one low-end Lexmark and found the quality of this one significantly superior. We're talking superb output, solid construction, good paper management. And economical. I swear I must have printed over 100 pages while the color cartidge was on a low ink level. I like it so much I'm going to buy a 2nd one for my other computer.

2-0 out of 5 stars It worked fine until I bought a new computer
I owned this printer for more than a year. It worked fine until I bought a new computer, I unplugged it, moved to a new place, and replugged it. The power supply burnt out. The printer was dead. I wasted 2 packs of unused expensive ink cartridges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great perfomance printer
Excellent job for small office or home use. Good resolution and fine prints on paper and photo paper as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you value your time and money then I'd something else...
I have owned an HP 940c now for about a year, and as it's now 4AM in the morning and I have a long project to work on, the printer has given me a hardware failure.

Having said that I've tried it on different computers, with different cartridges (thought maybe the OS X driver was to blame but evidently not), and it's dead. Now it's 4AM and I've spent 2 hours troubleshooting the printer only to have it dead.

To top it off this printer uses the HP #15 cartridge which is a #45 cartridge with half the ink at the same price.. you cannot use a #45 in this printer.

I highly reccomend against buying this printer. Not only is it subject to the expensive ink cartridges but it has been widely known for paper feeder problems (a school district recalled theirs), and they are all eventually prone to this sort of failure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the sixth star????
After trying 2 Epson 785EPX's and having trouble with the USB driver install, system locks and unacceptable white dot tracks all over the photos - cursing like I never have before, I decided to try HP & their brand new cp1700. Died and went to heaven! The results are STUNNING!! Printer sets up in 10 minutes, my entire computer runs three times faster (for some odd reason the Epson slowed everything down)and the photos are brilliant! (The paper feed on the new Epsons have real problems, that's what creates the white dot tracks, read other consumer reviews on the 785) This HP was up and kicking like no other hardware I've ever seen, amazing. Agreed that the price is more, but guess what? More than worth it, much more! Way to go HP, if there was a 6th star, you'd get it! Let alone the ability to print crystal clear 12 by 16's. Wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional value for the price
Great printer all around and I love the wide format ability. I have worked w/ a lot of printers over the years and I have to say HP is the best. Tech support is awsome, prices are good, and the printers are always workhorses.

Separate ink tanks (and print heads) save major $ over the long run. Has a kill switch to stop printing (another big $ saver). I love it and doubt I'll need another printer for a very long time. Both the print quality and color resolution are excellent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Works great for 1 year then it started locking up. I think it is something electronic because both the lights blink like crazy then it starts spiting out paper with some symbols on it. have to unplug it to stop it. Let me know if you want one I will send you mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars a solid, reliable printer.
I find the quality of prints to be just perfect...text is the best I have ever seen, nothing else comes even close.

the cartridges are really long lasting, hovewer not too cheap, but on the long run they pay off.

Quality of image printing is just excellent - a comparison to epson 1280 left the epson way behind.

the drawbacks - slightly crooked feed, a bit uncomfortable to insert new paper (especially when you change size), and terrible manual feed - it just grabs the paper without any aligmnemt and prints is crooked every time.

Overall, I love it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Occassionally works well
Strengths: Great when it works, sturdy construction
Weaknesses: Buggy hardware, buggy software, expensive ink.

Summary:
Our HP color inkjet printer cp1700 worked fantastic most of the time, great output, good colors, fast printing but with a slow first page. The 1700ps is the same printer with some added postscript software.

After two months it started making loud high pitch noises with every head-passing, HP support knows the issue; it's not easy to resolve. After six months of regularly cleaning a specific area, the noise no longer appears, the squeeck area must be worn out.

The postscript option, which I bought as well, is not worth its money, since it keeps crashing on Windows XP at system startup.

After six months the printer started complaining that printer cartridges are empty when in fact they are half full, really annoying when you want to print black only but the printer insist that you need to replace yellow.

After 14 months the printer declares that cartridges were missing although they were physically present. I had to replace all cartridges with brand new ones (that is ~$120), only to find out that the printer still claims that black is missing, so I ended with non working printer with expired warranty after 400 days of ownership, because it claims ink cartridges are missing when they are not.

The front feed mechanism works well for regular paper and has good allignment. Using heavier paper in the trays results in a very precise dent being made at a very precise spot on the page. Thicker paper also results in banding in the printout. The single sheet rear feed has less banding, no dents and can handle thicker paper but quite consistenly pulls the paper in sideways.

Also the ink is very expensive, the printer seems to waist quite a lot of it, judging by the mounds of dried up ink under the print heads.

HP has made it near impossible to use 3rd party ink supplies with this printer, with the chips built into the cartridges, so *only* expensive ink as an option.

In short an ill-behaved machine that works great when it feels like it, and in our case it did it only for about a year with some interrupions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top quality unit - Good for low volume home office work
The HP Deskjet 995ck Inkjet printer is an updated version of the 995c printer, which was first released in 2001. The 995ck was released in September 2003, and the differences between the two are minor. The 995c came standard with the duplex (two sided) printing unit and an infrared sensor. For the 995ck, the duplex unit is optional and the infrared sensor has been dropped. Hewlett Packard (HP) has dozens of printers available both in the Laser and Inkjet category. I will explain below why I think that the 995ck is one of the best Inkjet printers on the market for under $500.00. I also purchased the HP 175x Jet Direct Print Server along with the printer.

Prior to purchasing the HP 995ck, I owned an Epson Stylus Color 800 Inkjet printer. It was the top rated Inkjet printer discussed in several computer magazine reviews at the time. I was looking to replace it with a unit of comparable quality and capacity. My requirements were as follows:

A) Excellent text and graphics printing on plain paper - Graphics being defined as pages printed from the internet or downloaded magazine articles which are then printed for later reading, perhaps with graphs, charts, etc.

B) An ink cartridge life of approximately 1000 pages, and reasonable printing speed.

C) Relatively low cost per page expense.

D) A full-featured Ethernet connection that would operate just like my HP 4050TN Laser printer, which has a built-in Ethernet connection. I have a home office with four computers and wanted everyone to be able to use both printers without my computer needing to be on to print.

E) A well built unit mechanically, which would stand up to occasional office use for a long time without parts falling off.

F) A printer capable of good photo printing, but top quality photos were not needed.

The HP 995ck was the best choice among 15 printers that I evaluated or read about. There are many Inkjets available for less than the $249.00 that I paid for this one, but in one respect or another they didn't cut it for me. Many of the low cost Inkjets appeared to be made very cheaply, using plastic parts in some spots that look like they may not last very long. Even the other HP low cost printers looked to me a bit flimsy, particularly the paper tray components. I suppose for $99.00 I shouldn't be so picky.

The other area I found to be a problem was getting a printer with a Network connection without having to buy a third party print server box. In many cases, these units do not work correctly with every printer and my research shows that in the reverse direction (that is when the printer sends status information back to the computer), they do not work at all. The 175x is bidirectional with most HP printers, however before making a purchase, check out the HP website for a list of compatible units. The 995ck comes standard with a USB connection.

The HP 995ck is cost effective with ink, with an average cost per page of about 5 cents. It has optional high capacity ink cartridges if you want them, and they are not that expensive (relative to other models). The other nice thing about the ink cartridges is that they have built in ink nozzles, so when you replace the ink cartridge you are also replacing the nozzle. Some printers made by other companies do not have an option for the user to replace the ink nozzle. The user would, in the case of ink nozzle failure, just buy a whole new printer.

The printing quality of the 995ck is excellent for both text and graphics, even on plain copy paper, and it prints quite a bit faster than my old Epson. As far as the build quality of this unit, I consider it better than most of the lower cost Inkjet units, including those made by HP. It does have plastic parts but they appear to be more solid than other units I looked at.

The 175x Jet Direct print server is an external print server, housed in a small box with the footprint of a 3x5 index card, and costs about $159.00. It turns the 995ck and some other HP inkjets into full-featured network printers. (NOTE - check the HP website for a compatible printer list and network capabilities). This allows the owner to share the printer with others on the network. It also allows you to locate the printer up to 100 feet away from the computer. It comes with a Installation wizard which worked quite well, although you may wind up calling HP's technical support if you are not that familiar which setting up networks.

I am very pleased with the 995ck although I have only had it for a short time. In other review articles on the web, when they discuss this printer, the focus was always on the Bluetooth connection. I have no interest in this feature and simply turned it off. One of the control panels has a button to shut it the Blue tooth connection down, if you don't need it. A well known consumer magazine recently reviewed some Inkjet printers and liked this one too.

Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!
I bought this printer after my 5 year old Deskjet 930C died. I wanted an inkjet that had built-in network connectivity for use in my home network. I considered the Epson C84N, but it does not have a duplex accessory and the network connectivity is by way of a bundled print server device. Then I found the HP 5850. It had the features that I was looking for. It can be connected via USB cable, wireless 802.11b, Ethernet cable, or all three at once if you wish.

The out of box experience was very good. Plugged in the power, inserted the ink carts, and connected it to my router with a CAT5 cable. The first time it is powered on with the ink carts installed it goes through a configuration that takes 2 or 3 minutes. After that, the printer easily found an IP address using DHCP. Installation of the software from the included CD was equally smooth on both of my Win XP Pro pcs, the software found the printer and was ready to use within a couple minutes. Best of all, the duplex accessory from my old 930C also fits the 5850, saving the expense of having to buy a new one.

Print quality is very good, and is quicker than my 930C. Picture quality is much better and that is with the normal tri-color cartridge, I have not yet tested using the photo cart.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this printer, it is a very nice upgrade from my previous inkjet and just the thing for those of us needing to easily share a printer on a small network.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works, but not easy to set up
I bought this printer because of its wireless potential. And it works great, once it is set up. I run OS X, and I always argue that things works so well on the Mac, and they typically do. This printer set up, however, seems to have been written for Windows users. There are several steps, installing this, plugging in that, restarting the computer. This is insane for OS X, which is why it appears to me to be a Windows port.

Apple uses the incredibly easy to use networking protocol Rendezvous, which in theory doesn't need any driver installed (or perhaps the driver is installed by Apple in the OS, and this one is not, yet.) At least that's my limited knowledge and experience with Rendezvous using an HP 4600 Color Laser at my work location. Just plug the ethernet cable into the printer and there it is in the Add Printer box. However, this printer required me not only to install a driver, but then follow a complicated set up procedure, plugging in a network cable, turning on/off the printer. When that didn't work, I had to restart the computer; finally, I reinstallled the software, and then it worked. This is rediculous. This is exactly the reason I do not use the Windows OS. Perhaps I do not know enough about wireless connectivity, and this may be the only way to set up a wireless printer to work with an 802 network. If true, then I appologize to Windows users and HP. If this is as easy as it gets, then there needs to be more thought put into the install process, because it sure wasn't easy at all.

Second, the printer is pretty loud. It runs like an Epson inkjet that this is replacing. When you go to print, there is an inordinate amount of clacking, and the paper feed is part of the problem.

Fortunately, the printer does work wirelessly, which is the only reason I will keep this. And I like the paper feed in front of the printer, as opposed to on top like Epson made in the past.

Perhaps after working with this printer for a few weeks I will up my rating, but for now, this gets 3 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars very frustrating
Like one of the other reviewers, I am returning mine after 2 weeks of countless hours on the phone with HP tech. support, whom could never fix the problem. The software had problems loading up, then it did not want to work with my router's encryption, and when it did finally work it was totally sporadic. One day it prints, the next day it does not.
I have a new compaq laptop with windows XP, I bought a new Linksys router since HP said it must be the problem, they were wrong. I even exchanged my HP 5850 for a different one and it did the same thing.
I have not seen any other wireless printers on the market so, like the other reviewer, I am going back to a regular printer with a print server!
I am starting to suspect it is not compatible with windows XP. But that is just an uneducated guess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install? Wrong.
I'm writing this review after devoting my entire evening and most of this morning to trying to get this wireless printer set up on my network. During that time I also spent over 90 minutes on the phone with HP's customer service technicians (in India!) who ultimately were no help.

My configuration: Dell Inspiron laptop (Pentium II, 366Mhz, 128M memory, Windows XP); Netgear G router; Netgear G wireless adapter card; Motorola cable modem.

I couldn't even run the installation program on my computer. The first screen of the install wizard comes up on the screen but when I click "next", nothing happens. I had to call India so they could manually walk me through the installation process. Well, we got the printer "installed" but it's FAR from problem free...

Printer prints sporatically. Even now and then it will print a one page document but if I want to print another document I have to turn off my router, turn off the printer, turn off the computer and then turn everything back on in the same order. Then, sometimes, the printer will accept a print job. Longer documents won't print at all. HP's customer service is NO HELP whatsoever.

I see from other reviews that some people have no problems at all with the installation. To them I say, bravo. But if you're like me (and a few other disgruntled reviewers) and have problems with the installation, give it up, return the printer and get something more reliable. I like HP but this wireless printer isn't yet ready for prime time.

If this problem isn't fixed by the end of the day, I'm returned the printer and buying a regular (i.e., reliable) printer and a wireless print server.

What a waste of my time this printer has been. Save yourself the trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes print servers obsolete
I bought this printer for my home network of 3 computers. Two are old desktops, running windows 98 and one is a wifi laptop running xp. The wifi laptop connected wirelessly with the printer with no problem, but I had trouble getting the printer software to run on the old desktops. When I tried to load the software on the desktops, I got this major error message saying I had to reset the printer to factory settings (whatever that means?!). The solution was that I had to hard wire the printer to the wireless router. That's not a problem, though since I don't need to move the printer around anyway. The beauty of this setup now is that all 3 computers can print off the same printer independently of each other, just as if you had a print server. And the laptop can be moved to anywhere in the house and still be print ready. I would highly recommend this product if you seek this kind of functionality. The only downside is the software is a little quirky, especially on old computers ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All the pieces come together in this top of the line printer
I have owned several HP and Epson photo quality printers.
Each has been pretty good, but had one or two annoyances
that grew more bothersome over time. Particularly as
consumer digital cameras have improved to the 3 and 4
megapixel level, it was necessary to do something about
the quality of home photo printers. I think HP had the
farthest to go and they have closed the gap and taken a
wide lead with the 7550. The move to seven inks (from
HP's usual 4)in this model and the ability to go as
high as 4800 X 1200 dpi, has answered my concerns about
larger prints from my 4 megapixel Canon camera. This
printer also has a simple loading mechanism for 4x6
snapshots and I really like the new print cartridge
access (to the right of the paper trays), which means
I no longer have to drag the printer out from under the
shelf to open its top and change a cartiridge. This,
plus the front paper loading mechanism, makes the 7550
a real low profile machine. The LCD and controls allow
you to print pictures without the computer, though that
is not a big deal to me. The printer is quiet and fast
and I haven't given it a picture yet that it hasn't
handled with beautiful results. HP claims the new inks
and papers it is releasing with these new model printers
will last 65 years. I'll get back to you about that
claim in 2067.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Pictures, Great Features.
This is a pretty impressive printer. It has all the bells and whistles that a high end home photo printer should. The LCD monitor is the key feature. You can review your pictures right on the printer. By using the memory card reader, you can call up photos from Smart Media, Compact Flash, Sony Memory Stick, and SecureDigital. You don't even need to have a computer to use this printer. This printer has several other advantages over its little brother the 7350. The 7350 has the ability to utilize the new HP ink cartridges. Unfortunately, it only holds two of the three at a time. This means you have to swap them out when you print text or photos. The 7550 has a slot that holds all three. Another nice feature is that the new black cartridges are pretty [inexpensive] in comparison to previous black ink tanks. The printer can make borderless 4x6 prints pretty well. My only real reservation about the current HP line is the lack of brightness of the ink. Even the photo black can be a bit muddy. The 7550 prints quality pictures, but the convenience is the key feature. There are better photo printers on the market, but this one combines really decent pictures with the durability and the convenience associated with HP.

2-0 out of 5 stars ink guzzler
I just replaced my old HP Deskjet 722c with the Photosmart 7550. I am sorely disappointed in the fact that I've had to replace the ink cartridges 5 times since I got it last week - Buyer beware - the tricolor ink cartridge for the 722c is $35 and contains 30ml. The tricolor cartridge for the 7550 is also $35 - but contains only 17 ml - major difference when you do a lot of high-quality color printing. Next time I will know to check the size of the ink cartridges. Mind you, I was printing at a higher than usual resolution - "Normal" resolution for HP brochure/glossy paper. There are a couple of lesser resolutions and then the "best" resolution. The copies so far are extremely nice, but what was supposed to be a reasonably priced Christmas present (calendar) for 28 of my closest friends because more expensive than if I'd just taken the project somewhere to be done professionally. Would I buy this printer again - probably not since my reason for wanting it is for high-quality printing and at a reasonable price. Final note - I had the "photo" options turned off.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great surprise!
I orginally bought this printer a year ago as a basic color printer that would work with both my Mac and my husbands PC. The photo option was just a bonus because I thought I would eventually purchase a digital camera and it might be nice to print some out. Well I have been using it now for a few months as a photo printer paired with my Konica Minolta DiMage G600 6.0mp camera. The photos are exceptional. One would never know they were printed from my digital camera. I use the HP Premium Plus Matte paper. As a Senior Graphic Designer I am pretty particular about the quality. My boss liked it so much he bought one for himself! We have never had any problems with the printer and my husband uses it frequently has a general color printer in his home office. I do admit the cartridges are a little pricey but overall well worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars The print cartridge holders break.
I am on my second one. HP sent me a replacement for the first which I appreciate greatly but having the replacement break as well is truly a pain. Today I was printing and red turned to pink. The tiny plastic arm that holds in one of the cartridges has broken again. On the replacement unit!! Otherwise I'm truly happy with this printer but this seems like a design flaw. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect little printer
I purchased an earlier version of this printer last year along with my first digital camera. It is identical to this with one less port for memory cards. My camera was a 2 megapixel Olympus D510 so I did not intend to enlarge my photos beyond 4x6. This printer offered small size and ease of use, which appealed to me at the time. The printer does not need to be connected to a computer to produce high quality 4x6 images - as close to photos from film as you can get with 2 megapixels. I now have a three megapixel camera and the prints are even better.

This printer is so easy to use. Just plug it in, add paper, insert the smartmedia, compact flash, or memory stick into the appropriate slot, select the number of the photo you want to print, press the print button and watch a beautiful photo emerge from the printer. It weighs only 3 pounds and can be easily transported anywhere. I take it on vacation with me (in a soft sided, padded lunch box) and surprise my friends with instant copies of photos.

The are only a few drawbacks for this printer. First, photo paper and ink cartridges cost a lot so your photos will not be cheaper than outside processing. I try to purchase in larger quantities to reduce the cost and I use cheaper paper for less important prints. The second drawback is the inability to view the photo on the printer prior to printing. You'll have to jot down the photo's number from your camera screen. And, of course you can't crop or modify your prints on this printer, but that's not really different from developing photos at the store.

As for durability, as I said, I've had this printer for almost a year, have taken it everywhere, printed hundreds of photos and never had the slightest problem. It's a great little printer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great portable printer
I have been very happy with this printer and have used it often since purchasing it. The photos produced are sharp and clear, there is minimal set-up to begin using it right away, and no computer interface is needed, though there is software included if you like to do digital editing before printing. The photo preview screen makes printing without the computer practical and easy. The 230 stores in a bag roughly the size of the average camera bag which makes it easy to take to parties and family gatheri
