The coupling ring let's you attach a second filter holder allowing you to use more than three filters at once. You can also orientate square filters in different directions. Or move a Center Spot filter father away from the lens for a larger circle. Essential for outdoor photography
If you are an outdoor photographer, this filter is a must for your collection. The gradual grey allows you to get the correct exposure for the sky and land. For example, if you are shooting a sunset (or sunrise) it is easy to correctly expose the sky, living the bottom part of your picture underexposed and almost black. This filter will help in these situations by giving both parts of your picture the proper exposure.

The filter itself comes in a protective, plastic case that is well secured. You could throw it in your camera bag and not worry about it accidentally opening.

FYI - this filter is part of the Cokin P series, which are a bit bigger than their A series and designed for wider angle lenses. If you aren't sure what size lens you are going to be using the filter with it is probably a good idea to be safe and go with the P series. Neutral Density
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. They have four main uses:

1 To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars.

2 To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background.

3 To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations.

4 To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure. Neutral Density factors:
