3-0 out of 5 stars canon A310
Not too happy with my canon A310. When I use the flash the battery life is way too short. I can only take 4 pictures before having to change the batteries. I love canon but I was upset with this buy but then again the camera was real cheap. The movie mode is pretty cool.I just try not to use the camera for indoor shots and then it works just fine the pictures are real clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Camera, nice price
This camera is pretty neat , light weight, excellent quality and nice videos. I bought this camera from Amazon about 2 weeks before and it came with 64 MB Flash Card other than 16 MB internal memory. The only flaw I think it has is the quality of snaps taken in little dark places are not good enough according to the canon standards. Otherwise, its really nice to have such camera at such a low price.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excelent camera
This camera is very nice. Okay, having no optical zoom is definetely a setback, but all of its other nice features make up for it, still giving it 5 stars. It uses only 2 batteries, and doesn't weigh a ton. Also, the sliding lens cover makes it a bit more durable than other cameras without one. But my favorite feature is the movie mode. How can anybody argue with a camera this small, this cheap, with movie mode?

5-0 out of 5 stars This Canon is the Bomb
I am giving the A310 five stars for the superior image quality, its numerous features, and its reliability. I always set the camera at the maximum resolution, and as a result, I get tack-sharp images every time. Check out Canon's website for sample images; You will be amazed. You can shoot in hassle-free automatic mode, burst mode if you want to play paparazzi, manual mode if you want to control exposure compensation, white balance, iso speed, light metering, and photo effect (vivid, neutral, low sharpening, sepia, b&w), or Stitch-assist mode to combine up to 26 images for jaw-breaking panoramic views. You can view a histogram of each image in order to determine to right exposure compensation. The on-screen menu is user-friendly, nicely laid-out, and highly customizable. The camera comes bundled with Arcsoft PhotoImpression (excellent for basic image editing), PhotoStitch, and two video editing software. Both video editing software are pathetic; I use Windows Movie Maker 2 instead. With the included 32Mb Compact flash card, you can add a 60sec voice memo to each picture, or shoot up to 3 minutes of seamless video (with sound). On a single charge, 2 NiMH batteries last about 75 shots with flash (using the LCD screen) + roughly 10 mn of video + the extended periods I spent reviewing the videos and images. (You can increase battery life manyfold by switching the LCD display off, using natural light rather than flash, and reviewing stills and videos on a computer). In my opinion, this is still a highly energy efficient camera. You can always connect the camera to a power socket (if you purchase the accessories). The camera is also equiped with a macro lens for breath-defying close-ups (2 to 8 inches). Stylish, compact, and affordable, this toy deserves two thumbs up. Although you shouldn't expect to get a high-end digital camera for dirt-cheap price, the A310 is perfect for the average amateur. If you are a professional photographer, what are you doing here anyway?

1-0 out of 5 stars I did not like this camera at all--replaced w/ Minolta G400
Two days after I purchased this camera, I returned it to Target. I can read and follow directions and the book appeared simple enough to follow, however, the camera did not respond. I could not format the SD card, the display always read, busy, and after trying to review photos, I always received the message, no image available. If the directions are too hard to follow, then this camera is not for me. If my particular camera was defective, then this brand is not for me. Defective cameras should be caught by the manufacturer before they are shipped to the store. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo Printing - The Next Generation
Every once in a while we cycle our digital technology at home in a hand-me-down way. Every time we do this, there is an order-of-magnitude improvement in speed and/or quality, and this purchase was no exception.

We logged a departure from HP with this purchase, moving from a DJ 712 to the Canon i960.

I am an anti-banding freak. I select my printer by walking through Best Buy (or whatever store) and examining print samples for banding. IMHO HP used to distinguish itself by not having any. But I've grown tired of visible dots as well.

I have never seen an Epson printer of any kind pass this banding test in the stores I visit. Epson sales reps - take note.

Wanted to go to the 6-tank variety because I was just irritated by the $30 cost when ANY color ran out. This should be more efficient.

I already have a Canon PowerShot S50 and the little CP-300 dye-sub portable. Love 'em.

Was pleasantly surprised to see the i960 print one of my digital photos off the computer on 4x6 Photo Pro paper, and it looked as good as the dye-sub (except, of course, for the lack of protective layer). No visible dots, no banding. Looks like lab quality to me.

I have no technical or ergonomic issues with the i960, love the speed and quality of the output. Had a great OOBE, and am looking forward to years of continued successful and professional results.

It was a good purchase for me.

Cheers,

-- Mike

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasitc photo printer
We needed a color printer for mug shots at work and this one works great. Our graphics art designer suggested an expensive Epson which the boss didn't what to pay for. The main requirement was for more color cartridges meaning better photos. We purchased the Canon i960 and were blown away by the quality of the photos it printed.

I decided to shop for one for home use and printed a 1 megapixel shot of a child wearing a black shirt in a colorful ball pit on both a Canon i960 and a HP photosmart 9760. These two printers both use a 6 ink system. I was interested in the HP because their 6 ink system is available on a wide range of printers, some of which are half the price of the Canon i960. With the Canon line you need to step up to the i960 or i900d to get their 6 ink color system. In both cases I used the corresponding vendors 4x6 photo paper. To my eye the Canon output had more vivid colors and a crisper image. Very fine details such as strands of hair were somewhat blurred and lost in the background of the HP photo. The ball pit mesh netting was sharper in the canon photo. My wife felt that the ball outlines were sharper on the Canon photo.

The under 60 second output speed of the i960 (for 4x6) photos feels fast. I was not as frustrated with this printers speed as I have been with some others I tested. Also there are no perforated edges to tear off.

The individual ink cartridges seem like a nice idea and are reasonably priced.

The i960 is quieter than most of the cheaper inkjets I've used in the past.

Finding Canon printer supplies in stores is a bit harder than HP supplies.

I've heard a life span of 25 years for the Canon photos which is less than the 75 years claimed by HP for their photo inks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Printer Head / Ink Cartridge Design
I am very disappointed in the Cannon i960 printer. The printer head is very poorly designed. I had great difficulty getting the print head and ink cartridges to work. I had to reseat the printer head 5 times before it would work. I had to reseat the magenta ink cartridge 5 times before it would work. It took 4 hours of reading the manual to diagnose all the errors I was getting and running tests to get this printer where it would print a color picture. Our last printer was an HP 895cse. The HP was easy to set up and ran great for 3 years. I wish we had bought another HP. I am very disappointed in the quality of this printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Direct, simple & complete.
After delivery, I checked out the directions printed on the sides of the box before opening it. My first opioion was that this was going to be a quick and easy assembly and application software uploaded to Zigzag, the name I've given to my computer. I unloaded the printer, power cable, the ink jet cartridges, & 4X6 photo paper insert. Then I unwrapped all shipping tape stripping from the products, placed the printer on its stand...please excuse my long windedness...attached the power cord, placed the ink cartridges in their appropriate spots, placed the 4X6 paper tray, expanded the the paper outputs trays, pluged in MY OWN USB cable...since one didn't come with the purchase.

There it was, ready to go. My second opinion was that all was easy. I uploaded the software following instructions. All was easy like drinking fine wine.

My first photo print was two 2X3 photos on one sheet of 4X6 glossy paper supplied with the Canon i906. The detailed printing application was a breeze, the color and detail quality were excellent, as good/better than photo lab processing. I'm a Happy Photographer & Happy Photo Printer thanks to my new CANON i960. Enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars DOESN'T WORK NO CABLE INCLUDED RUN
I can't believe why no cable was included knowing that it uses only one kind of cable. Now I have to go get a cable somewhere. So basically the price of the printer is $20 more then list price. If there were choices of cable to use I can understand but it only uses USB. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Whether shooting up-close or from a distance, the Optura 30 delivers video and photos with exceptional definition and contrast, making every shot you take a potential award-winner. Featuring Genuine Canon Optics, the Optura 30 combines a powerful 12x Optical Zoom with a 240x Digital Zoom, ensuring that you always get the shot you want.

Auto-Exposure Bracketing
In uncertain lighting conditions, the Auto-Exposure Bracketing feature will make sure your bases are covered: With a single press of the PHOTO button, the camcorder records three photos with different exposures. Later, you can choose which photo is best for printing or storing.
Enjoy stunning video and photos
The secret behind the Optura 30 and Optura 40 camcorders' incredible video and photos is Canon's DIGIC DV technology. Since videos and photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV uses special color optimization techniques when processing an image for output to a TV or printer. The result is accurate, life-like color reproduction in all your videos and photos.

Catch all the action without the shake
Life rarely sits still for a shot, that's why the Optura 30 and Optura 40 feature Canon's advanced Image Stabilization system. Now you can keep images smooth and steady, even at full telephoto and while panning or zooming. The large 2.5" LCD and Color Viewfinder further helps to compose sensational shots from any angle.

Dazzle on-lookers with vibrant color shots
Now you can relive those precious moments with all their true vibrant colors. While traditional camcorders process color with a standard CMYG filter (resulting in duller colors), the Optura 30 and Optura 40 camcorders use Canon's RGB Primary Color Filter, which separates light passing through the lens into their true red, green and blue color components. The result is professional-quality images that deliver natural-looking tones and superior color rendition.

Get the full picture on your wide-screen TV
Unlike camcorders which only record a vertically stretched picture, the Optura 30 and Optura 40 both feature a High-Resolution 16:9 Mode that records video in true 16:9 ("letterbox") format for playback on wide-screen TVs. When shooting in the 16:9 Mode, the entire width of the 2.2 Megapixel CCD image sensor is used to capture your footage. The result is wide-screen quality videos that are certain to impress even the biggest "big screen" fan.

Canon's Megapixel CCD
Canon's Megapixel CCD Image Sensor delivers crisp images with life-like detail. Whether you are shooting video or photos with the camcorder, you will get the best results. The CCD works like film -- when light is captured by the sensor, it registers an image and advanced processing converts the pixels into digital data creating your video or photos.

Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV
DIGIC DV, our exclusive signal processing circuit, makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and digital photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Take it from sight to website at a moment's notice
Thanks to the Optura's improved Motion JPEG feature, you can shoot video ready for streaming over the Internet or for e-mailing. The Motion JPEG Mode records your footage onto the Secure Digital memory card at 15 frames/second, giving you up to 60 minutes of recording time on a 512MB card. You can then quickly and easily transfer your movies to your computer using the USB cable.

Make incredible panoramas and portraits
The Optura line of camcorders gives you the power to edit your still images in a variety of exciting ways. The Stitch Assist feature allows you to capture and create breathtaking 360-degree panoramas, while the Skin Detail Mode helps you take complimentary close-ups of people by softening details and reducing skin imperfections.

Turn your camcorder into a webcam
Exclusive to Canon, the Optura camcorders feature a Network Mode that enables you to remotely control your camcorder through the DV Messenger2 software application. Control the focus and zoom of your camcorder from a computer while streaming the video via its IEEE 1394 terminal

Explore your creativity with the supplied software
Included in your Optura Kit are Pinnacle Studio 9SE and Pinnacle Instant Photo Album, two powerful editing programs that can help turn your videos and photos into lasting memories.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Indoor performance kills an otherwise 5 star camera.
2 1/2 stars.. Good feel and Features saves it from a 2 star rating. With minimal low light performance, this camera would have been 5 stars.

I tried both this camera and the Elura 65/70 side by side. While I prefered the feel and overall features of the Optura, the low light is so bad on the Optura, that I ended up selecting the Elura 70. Overall, the Elura has better video performance for less money. And isn't video performance the top reason to buy a camcorder?

Low light is relative.. I'm talking regular indoor lighting, not near dark stuff. I tested it with 300 watts of artificial light ins a 25x15 room and the colors were dull/drab and noticably darker and less colorful than the elura. What's worse, as you lower the light, movement/pans of the camera leave echos of objects! Below 60 lux, the camera is pretty much useless without an accesory light. I find this unacceptable in a $899 camera. I will say that nantural sunlight does wonders for performance, but this only helps when filming near windows or in a sunroom and does nothing at night.

Don't even consider the night modes, they slow down the frame rate and look worse anything you would film in standard mode. And to those that may ask, yes, auto slow shutter is off(which i recommend for any Canon camcorder).

I think the cultrip is the RGB filter... which produces more accurate colors but decreases luminance levels. This is why single CCD cameras genreally use Complementary filters... and why if you want RGB, yuo should get a 3 CCD Camera. I suppose that Canon thought that the 2mp CCD would make up for this weakness. It doesn't. I would have loved this camera with a Complentary filter. I'll sacrifice a negligable amount of color accuracy in bright light for tolerable indoor performance anything. The truth it's hard to tell the difference in the colors, but it's easy to tell the difference indoors.. and indoors, it's brightness and Color that are so bad! The Elura 65/70 performs MUCH better indoors producing reasonably well at normal lighing conditions.. and even as low as 15 lux.

Still Performance is OK, but the overall quality isn't much better than the 1mp elura.. except that the pictures are 1623x1224 rather than 1280x960... While good for a camcorder, they are still no substitute for a digital camera. Don't buy either for stills! The Elura takes suprisingly good photos without a flash, but an external flash is available.

After trying both cameras, I loved the 30.. and it was difficult to part with it. I ran the same tests over and over, and even tried a different Optura, thinking that mine may have been defective.
The bottom line is: If these cameras were the same price, I would have taken the Elura... with the Elura being cheaper, it's a no brainer.

Good Luck

Optura Likes: Excellent auto focus, focus ring, overall feel of Camera is the best that I've felt. Integrated flash, 2mp CCD, Top Loader, Exposure setting.

Dislikes: INDOOR PERFORMANCE IS VERY POOR. Menu Dial is in awkward position. Price.

NOTE: Canon was SO close with this camera. I'm not saying it's not a good camera.. it's feel and performance are great.. it just performs at the bottom of the bell curve on indoor performance... even when compared to cameras half the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Camera!
I recently purchased the Optura 30 at a local retailer after months of research. I must say that I am happy with all of the camera's features except the night mode, which was suppose to be improved. The Optura 40 has Super Night mode, but I haven't been able to find the camera in retail stores to test it out.

Aside from the poor low light feature, the Optura 30 is a great camera. It takes great digital stills (2.0 megapixel) and pretty good Motion JPEGs.

I recommend this camera! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY HANDY, LOOKS NIFTY, AND PRINTS FAST!
THE GOOD:

(1) This is the lightest printer among peers. HP's 450cbi, the closest alternative in my book, is nowhere near as portable as the i70.

(2) Prints directly from a digicam. I use Canon's G3, and I can now share photo print-outs straight from my camera. No need to lug my laptop around.

(3) The battery life is great, don't believe detractors. IN general you don't need the battery -- that is only for outings, for those occasions when you just have to print out something while sitting by the lake.

(4) It is FAST! Especially for color prints, it outpaces my full-blown HP laserjet.

(5) It is QUIET. You'll have to get used to its noiseless printing. First time round, I had to check to make sure the paper was printed on.

(6) Is a breeze to INSTALL. Something you can expect from Canon, of course.

(7) Works with both Windows and Macs.

CAVEATS:

(1) The photo quality may not appeal to shutterbugs, especially if NOT printed on photo paper, but for general office workers with little desk space or for folks with a packed travel roster, the i70 is a pretty safe bet.

(2) The ink costs may sky rocket quite quickly if you print colored stuff often. If, like me, your general printing is B&W, then this is a great buy.

(3) The price, especially if you buy the battery pack. But there are deals if you know where to look.

SUMMARY:

A great overall printer, definitely if you need to carry one around. I purchase Epson's photo paper (not Canon's own) for color shots and the i70 prints more than adequately. The speed, the quality and the quietness make it one of my top printer recommendations -- all things said, even better than a regular inkjet.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING LITTLE PRINTER
I was in the market for a portable printer to use with my Fujitsu Lifebook. The portable markey is pretty small, being that there are only a very few printers that are small enough to be called portable, but still print on full-size paper.

At first I didn't like anything available. I checked in depth but nothing out there really caught my eye. One day I strolled on over to Canon's website and what did I see, but the i70 listed as "Coming Soon!"

I decided to hold off on buying a printer until I could see the i70 in person, which I later did. It's beautiful. It's sort of a platinum silver color, with a rich blue printhead cover. It closes easily and a small magnet keeps the bottom sheet-feeder attached to the top cover (it's way cooler than I'm describing it...)

Installation was a snap. Typical of Canon. I'm running Windows XP and I have no problems in the slightest.

The first thing I noticed is that it's quiet. I didn't think it was really printing until I saw the paper coming out.

Second: it's FAST. It's the fastest inkjet printer I've ever used, beating out my HP 1120C in both speed, noise, and print quality.

It's not labled as a photo printer, but the print quality of the i70 is just amazing. If there's a difference between this and real photo printers, I haven't seen it, nor do I care. It's good. VERY good.

I have not tested the infrared communications yet... I send everything to the printer via USB, which is a breeze.

To sum it up:

Pros:

Appearence
Speed
Noise
Quality

Cons:
Not the same silver as other Canon products (such as the LiDe30) but it's still so pretty...

I HIGHLY recommend this printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Printer-Big Success
I needed a small portable printer for my laptop, and after researching them, I chose the Canon i70. It has all of the attributes I needed-lightweight,super easy to use, fast as the office rumor mill, and a great print job. I highly recommend this product to anyone fortunate enough to have purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Purchases I have Made
I don't usually write reviews, but have to for this. It prints black text fast as anything. I do a lot of heavy printing and am still on both of my cartridges since I purchased it about a month ago. The one thing that I was worried about was printing pictures. I use glossy photo paper for pictures and they turn out great. It is small, portable and as good as a full size printer. I have recommended this printer to everyone. It is more than I could have asked for in a printer this size.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Printer is Fantastic!
This TINY printer is amazing. Its whisper quiet, fast, and prints with exceptional quality (both photos and documents in color and B/W). I have no complaints whatsoever. Also, you can start printing virtually immediately after taking it out of the box - easy with USB cable. I highly recommend this printer to anyone. ... Read more

Featuring a high-tech design with aluminum front cover and metallic handgrip, the Canon PowerShot A70 combines a sense of both the modern and the traditional. Despite its entry-level designation in Canon's digital lineup, the 3.2-megapixel PowerShot A70 is a surprisingly advanced model with a higher resolution than its counterpart A60 model and more manual features than you'll find on most digital point-and-shoots.

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot A70 features a 3.2-megapixel sensor that can capture images up to 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, producing print enlargements up to 11 by 14 inches. It's also equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens (35-105mm, f/2.8-4.8) to cover a wide selection of photographic opportunities, as well as a 3.2x digital zoom. The PowerShot A70 also features Canon's five-point AiAF (Artificial intelligence Auto Focus) system for focusing accuracy, shutter speeds of 15 to 1/2,000 second, and fast sequence shooting at a rate of 2.2 frames per second (fps).

Movie Mode
Shoot up to three minutes of MPEG video at resolutions up to 320 x 240 pixels with sound, editing controls, and VCR-like playback. You can also shoot video at up to VGA resolution (640 x 480) for 30 seconds. The camera can also attach voice memos or sound files of up to 60 seconds to each image.

More Features
Offering a wider scope for photographic experimentation, Canon has also included manual, aperture priority, and shutter priority exposure modes. These modes are supported by a metering system that boasts evaluative, center-weighted average and spot options. Canon's DIGIC (DIGital Imaging Core) processor ensures excellent color rendition and white balance for every shot, as well as super-fast auto focusing, noise-free imaging, and advanced flash exposure performance.

Other features include:

  • 1.5-inch TFT (transreflective) LCD monitor.
  • Built-in flash with auto, on, off, manual, and red-eye reduction modes.
  • Shot modes include manual, portrait, landscape, night scene, stitch assist, and more.

Files can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Printing
Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with its lineup of digital cameras. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. Printers include Canon's bubble jet direct printers S830D and S530D, and card photo printer CP-100. Of course, photos from your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjet printer, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computer screen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only camera with full manual under 300!
Pro's
1. Excellent features like 3MP, Video out, AA batteries, movie w/sound etc.
2. Very competitively priced.
3. Manual features like long shutter and shutter/aperture priority mode.
4. Superb battery life, works even on normal alkaline AA's.
5.Uses standard & inexpensive CF card. (not stick or xd card).
6.Good LCD screen, very good ergonomics.

Con's
1. Its effectively 2 inches thick not 1.3, when you consider the battery compartment size.
2. Not pocketable, very heavy with 4 AA batteries and thick. (Canon didn't use just 2 AA's probably to protect their Elph line.)
3. AF assist is just a gimmick, doesn't help camera focus better. The weak beam reaches only a few feet.
4. Soft images and lot of time needed to auto-focus & also shutter lag.
5. Build quality and reliability isn't as good as Elph's (Elph's are made in Japan in Canon factories unlike A70/A60 which are outsourced).

In short, if you want manual features and can live with its weight/size then this is the best 3MP for your money. If size/pocketability/reliability is more imp than manual features then Elph series is much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
I purchased the Canon Powershot A70 in May in anticipation of using it on a trip to Europe. After researching several online photo equipment review sites and looking at the cameras in local retail stores, I decided on the A70. The facts that influenced my decision to purchase this camera were: size, weight, type of battery, ability to shoot in full automatic or with some level of manual control. The additional advantages this camera offered, were the ability to use rechargeble batteries and add a macro or telephoto lens.

The learning curve is very fast. I didn't have time to get very familiar with the camera before leaving, but it didn't take long to learn how to make adjustments. Digital cameras tend to be much smaller than film cameras and that affects their handling and controls. The menus are easy to access and once familiar can be changed quickly. At first I thought the words on the menus were difficult to read in the LCD but this became less of a problem with time and with my glasses on. In outdoor light all LCD's tend to be difficult to see but this is a very bright LCD and indoors is fantastic for viewing pictures.

The macro worked wonderful. If you are photographing a stationary object you could use the manual focus, but to photograph insects or anything that moves, use the autofocus in macro mode to get spectacular photos.

I used a battery recharger with 2 sets of 4 rechargeable AA batteries, so I always had a spare set. I used the LCD all the time and reviewed images at night of the day's photos, the batteries seemed to last forever. As long as you have a recharger with an adapter for European current, you can plug it in at night in a hotel room and be ready for the next day. The AA batteries can double in an emergency to power up your PDA with an adapter so you won't be carrying dead weight for only one device.

The 16MB compact flash that comes with the camera is best left home. Get a 512MB CF and you can put nearly 500 photos in L mode (2048 X 1536). You can add music or a memo to your photos. I added a music memo to a picture of a band playing 60 feet away and the camera recorded it flawlessly. This camera also has a movie mode with sound.

All controls are easy to access, the camera is well-balanced, and fast to turn on and off. Don't be fooled into thinking this camera is too big. Many of the new cameras are smaller, but they are not easy to get a grip on or hold with one hand without getting your fingers in the way of the lens.

Once you get your pictures home it is easy to view them. The camera comes with a cable to view them on a TV with video and audio inputs or you can upload them to your computer via a USB cable.

This camera is much more than it might appear and for a modest price it delivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bargain! Buy it while it's still available!
This is my first digital camera and I absolutely love it. I am a computer guy myself, so the basic come a little easier to me than others but even my wife (not so much the computer person) is able to use it without reserve and she prefers it better than our still camera.

The shooting modes are easily accessible on the top dial. You can switch from AUTO, to camcorder, to action shots within seconds. I can get 137 pix out of one 128mb card. The battery life is great. I DEFINITELY recommend rechargables!

There are a couple little *quirks* about it like the fact that there are two menus which can be a pain if you know you saw a feature somewhere but don't remember exactly which menu had it. Plus I can't figure out a way to get a date on the print. It may be there but then I'd have to read the manual :-)

Otherwise, you simply can't beat this camera for the price. Get it now before Canon phases it out. There are two newer models out there now so the clock is ticking!

4-0 out of 5 stars better than expected! but off to the factory already!
i got this camera after being disappointed with the quality of my 3MP fuji finepix s5000. i did my homework and researched 3MP digital cameras for a few weeks. i noticed the A70 had the same advanced controls as the finepix s5000. it got good reviews from both professionals and casual users. so, i bought it and i have been VERY happy with this camera ever since.

my advice? READ THE MANUAL if you ever plan on doing more than pointing and shooting. even if you don't, read it anyway! this camera has a great feature set and you'd be wasting your hard earned money if you don't check it out. also, as always, spring for a bigger compact flash card (at least 128MB), rechargable batteries and a case. protect your investment!

PROS:
* takes excellent 3MP photos (color is cool and images are sharp). isn't this what digital photography is all about?
* advanced features are great! it's a great point and shoot camera, but also has tons of advanced features for those wanting more control; white balance, shutter speed, aperature, ISO, and many, many more!
* movie feature is kinda cool. with sound, too!
* fairly small and feels comfortable in your hand. controls are where they should be.
* menu is easy to understand.
* battery life seems to be pretty good (i use rechargables).

CONS:
* LCD on back of camera scratches very easily. don't remove the protective cover, or buy one on ebay. people actually sell these things. :)
* LCD gets a pink hue to it when i am in daylight, taking photos. the LCD is hard to see in daylight. try using the viewfinder. though the optical viewfinder isn't exactly what you'll see when you transfer to your 'puter, but it's close enough.
* time between photos could be better.

overall, a SUPER camera! i just hope i don't get the dreaded "E18" error!

7.12.04
well, it's off to the factory already for repairs. it's been a little over a month since i bought the A70 and it's already got problems. pink streaking on the LCD and although it doesn't show up in the pictures, it does show up on the video. i am so scared of sending this thing to the canon factory to be worked on 'cause i have heard so many stories about their horrible customer service. oh well, here goes...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great camera, especially for the learner
I've long believed that the only way to become good at photography is to keep experimenting and the move to digital allowed me to indulge in my hobby without worrying about consuming film on failed photographs. I have found the A70, with its impressive list of manual controls, perfect for the job. Its pictures are sharp and clear and uploading them to the computer is a piece of cake.

Its wide range of shutter speeds and apertures allows for a lot of experimentation, especially with low light and night shots. I've come up with some night shots and macros that I've been quite proud of. I also have a three year old and as anyone with kids knows, they never have the time to pose for a photograph. So for such moments when there isn't enough time to fiddle around with the settings, the preset modes like portrait, shutter priority, etc. work real well. The batteries last quite long(I've taken about 200 shots, most of them with the LCD on, with one set) and with 2 sets of rechargeables, I make sure I'm never without a fresh set.

The reduction of 1 star is due to the E18 error I've gotten several times. And apparently it is quite prevalent if the forums are to be believed. Though its never affected my photographs(since it occurs only when shutting down or turning the camera on in play mode), it is quite annoying and scary.

Overall, I love my A70 and never leave the house without it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great buy!
I received this camera as a gift, and it has surpassed all my expectations! There are 6 zoom levels, a timer, and 5 modes (nighttime, portrait, still life, and motion are the only ones I've used). I've gotten 3 rolls of film developed, and the quality is AMAZING. My old Panasonic would zoom in well, but the developed pictures were really blurry. With the Canon Sureshot 115u, there is no blur whatsoever, even on the furthest zoom setting. An excellent buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing quality with great ease of use
This is a very simple camera to use. The results are excellent. I mostly use 800 speed films and that might contribute to the vivid colors. But I have a Nikon N50 SLR with Quantraray lens and 115u gives me quality pictures which are as good as if not better, N50. I tried night close-ups, low-light, action and general pictures. Interesting thing is that, I found Walmart development better than any other place. We usually use, Walmart one day service. They use Fuji machine vs Kodak at most other places.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this camera
I just got this camera yesterday, I haven't even developed a roll of film off of it yet, but I love it! The zoom power is amazing. I also love the compact size of it too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for the non-professional
If you are looking for a camera to replace a traditional film camera, the SD-100 is it. I'm an avarage user and this is what I've found:

PRO:
1. Small size. Easy to carry in a pocket or purse.
2. Decent Zoom
3. Burst mode for taking a series of quick pictures.
3. Movie mode...WITH SOUND!
4. Intuitive controls
5. Supplied Cannon software makes transferring photo's a breeze.

CON:

1. Expect to buy a memory card. The 16MB supplied with the camera is useless.
2. Red-eye. Even with the red eye reduction turned on, you still get some red eye. It's mildly annoying, but you can fix it on the computer easily.
3. Mysterious small halo. Must be a function of the lens. occasionaly you will get this small halo in a picture. Doesn't happen often.
4. A second battery is highly reccomended.

The only people who will complain about this camera are high-end photographers. They'll whine about everything. "Zoom is tiny" "Aperature control" "Lack of filter". Crybabies the whole lot of them.

If you are a normal person, you'll love this camera. Point, shoot, done.

3-0 out of 5 stars An amazing all-round camera with one glaring flaw
After a long research, I decided to purchase the Canon IXUS II (or SD100 in some countries) as my first digital camera. As a background, I am generally a point-and-shoot person with aspirations to take up photograpgy as a more serious hobby. I've been using it extensively for about two months now, and here's what I think are the good and bad points of the camera:

GOOD POINTS

1. Amazing picture quality for OUTDOOR shots - Pictures are sharp and crystal clear. The photos produced are exactly like what I saw with my own eyes.

2. Small, slim and solid - Can fit in my pocket easily. Now I can take it everywhere and ready to take a snapshot whenever I feel like it. It opens a whole new possibilities.

3. Relatively easy to use - The buttons layout are spot on, everything important is within reach of your thumb or index finger. On-screen menus are logical and easy to use. For advance features, I still need to read the manual though.

4. Movie quality is generally good. All movies I took plays well (with good sound) on the camera's LCD and and also on my 29" TV. The sound playback on the camera is quite loud and can be heard even in noisy areas.

5. Fast operation - fast starting up time and time between shots, you wont notice any delays. Transferring images to PC is also relatively fast.

6. Battery life is okay, I managed to took 68 shots (plus a hell lot of picture playback on LCD and on TV) before the battery died.

7. Great LCD display. Sharp images and good colour reproduction. Can be seen easily in bright sunlight.

BAD POINTS

1. Average (on the borderline of poor) INDOOR picture quality. Every photo I took that uses the flash turns out ugly. The photos have this unnatural yellow glow (from the flash) on the subject, and the background becomes very dark, even though the room was evenly lit in real life. The best that I could do is to use Manual, and set the Exposure to -1 2/3, White Balance to Tungsten, and set the Effects to Neutral, and ISO to 50. That manages to turn my indoor pictures from ugly to bearable. The other alternative is to take indoor shots with flash off, as suprisingly it produces good pictures. But you need to use a tripod to get sharp images, which isn't always convenient. I'm really dissapointed with the indoor performance of this camera. None of the glowing reviews I read in my research highlighted this problem.

2. Low battery indicator only shown on screen when the battery is on the verge of dying. If you don't have a spare battery and you are outside, your camera would be useless until you get back and recharge the battery.

3. Need to take out the battery to recharge.

4. Only 2x optical zoom.

5. Movies has a limit of 30 seconds per clip. You can fill up the whole memory card with movies, but it has to be in a series of 30s clips. You can't take one long continous movie shot.

6. Once you downloaded your movie shots to PC, and you deleted the movie from your camera, you cant upload the movie back to your camera. You can upload still images back to your camera, but not movies.

7. The bundled Canon software is not the best, nor is it the easiest to use.

Conclusion: A great all round compact camera that is easy to use, and takes excellent outdoor shots. If you can live with average indoor shots, then buy this. Otherwise, I would recommend Sony Cybershot as it can take much much better indoor shots compared to this camera. I give this camera 2.5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING CAMERA
THIS CAMERA ROCKS.
I average about 100 photos a day plus a few videos 7 days a week. This camera has been totally abused, Its been dropped almost 10 times, somtimes from about 6 feet landing on tile and concrete surfaces. Ive spilled beer all over it 3 times so its been soaking wet and all i do is dry it off and its fine. It been in the rain, the snow, the heat, the humidity, and below zero tempertures. The lense has 3 dents in it, one from a metal cup being thrown at it by an angry photo subject where the lense was smashed in about 1/4 of an inch on an angle, and all i did (the next morning while sober) was just click out the lense and it worked FINE hahah. A few of my friends have digital cameras that broke just from them bumping into a table with the camera in their pocket. This little Canon can take anything and I recommend it to ANYONE who brings their camera with them wherever they go. Its small and compact, sturdy, takes excellant photos (excepcially of hot chicks) in all conditions, great options, fun options like sounds and custome start up images, easy to use menu, and fits well in my hand. The lanyard is also of great design and makes the camera even more secure. IF this camera EVER breaks I will instantly buy a new one as I believ it is the only camera that can take the abuse I give it.

BUY THIS CAMERA!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Camera that Can take a Few Hits
I've had the camera for a good week or so. Been playin around with it and it takes some great pictures. I was looking for a camera I can take when I go on trips and stuff that would fit into my pocket with ease. I didn't want any more embarassing comments from people like a "Is that a camera in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" This guy slips into the pocket with ease and is not bulky at all. The camera was a little heavier than I expected, but thats no big deal.

Picture quality has been good thus far. Not great, but I didnt want to drop another hundy for just 1 MP improvement. I bought a 512 MB SD card off Amazon for $75 (after rebate), so I don't have any problem fitting pictures on here. Just splerge a little and you'll never have to worry about filling up the card. I also bought a genuine Canon battery off of Ebay for a backup, but havent found battery power to be a problem as of yet. The zoom does the trick for what I need. If you are just taking pictures of friends, random hot chicks, etc this is fine. Yeah, 3x optical would be nice, but this will suffice. I really didn't intend to rhyme there, sorry.

Here is my story on the durability of the camera. So, my first outing with the camera. A baseball game between two big crosstown rivals. Tailgating in the lot before the game, pretty intoxicated. Took a bunch of pictures already, turned out great. Then the incident occurred. Someone is standing a good 200 feet away throwing a softball back and forth with another guy I am with. Random people are walking by left and right and an errant throw approaches my group. I attempt to protect some bystanders from taking a head shot with the ball. I throw my hand up in the air to block the ball, however, my blurred judgement threw up the hand with the camera in it. Next thing I know, my new camera is airborne. It flies about 8 feet high and 10 feet away from me, crashing into the side of a truck and then hitting the concrete full force. It was like taking the camera and just whipping it against the ground. I thought, "well, it was nice having a digital camera for a few days. This one is gone" Upon picking up the camera, I was pleasantly surprised. The battery holder on the bottom fell off and the battery went flying. After 3 minutes of searching under cars, the battery was found. I popped it back in, snapped the cover back on, and the moment of truth came. I hit the power button, and boom, it turns on like nothing ever happened. All my old pictures are still there and I took many pictures the rest of the day. All turned out great. Two scrapes on the bottom is all of the lasting damage. Gives my camera a little personality. Matches the scrapes on my cell phone from similar instances. So, this camera is definitely durable, will be able to take a few shots. Also, if you drink too much and become a little clumsy with your possesions, this is the right camera for you.

Overall, a great camera, defintely worth the price for me ($209). I bought a somewhat cheaper one knowing that I might do something stupid and lose it or break it quickly. That did occur, and it still works, so a plus for me. Takes good pictures and is very easy to use and take around with you. Overall, this is a great camera for the amateur photographer, who likes to travel but not be bogged down with a huge camera. Take pictures of your friends and family and you will be happy. And of course, if you are a twenty something, obnoxious, can't control your drinking kind of guy, I give this my 100% recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great LITTLE Camera
A terrific little camera for the price. I bought the SD100 based on my experience with the APS elph II. It too is small, easy to use, and takes great pictures. We love vacationing at theme parks and have found that it's easier to get around without having camera bags, backpacks etc... getting in the way. I carry the SD100 on my belt with the optional leather case and hardly know it's there. I use it at work too, and it's small enough to keep with me all the time. Even the best camera is useless if you don't have it with you. Connection to a computer is simple with the included USB cable, and with my Windows XP machine I didn't even bother installing the software. Just plug it in, turn it on, download your pictures. I'm also a big fan of the stainless steel shell.

Two drawbacks are the limited optical zoom and the size of the screen. The screen is great for composing photos even in bright sun, but viewing them directly from the camera is much better when you connect to a TV with the included cable. The optical zoom is what it is, but to get something longer you'll most likely need a larger camera. I'm also glad I bought an extra, larger SD disk. The included 16 MB is fine if you have a handy place to download pictures but having space for lots of pictures is one of the great advantages of digital photography. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Canon Optura 10 camcorder is equipped with a full range of sophisticated features to capture outstanding video and digital photos. It features high-quality Canon optics with a 16x optical zoom, image stabilization, a 1.33 megapixel CCD, 2.5-inch LCD screen, and advanced photo capabilities.

Lens and Optics
The powerful 16x optical zoom lets you capture your subject with razor-sharp detail even from a distance, while the 320x digital zoom takes you even closer, revealing details too small to see with the naked eye. When capturing digital still images, the lens provides a 15x optical zoom--the equivalent of a 41-620 mm lens on a 35mm photo camera. The Optura 10 also features a 1.33-megapixel CCD and an image stabilization system that compensates for camcorder shake, even while panning and zooming.

Canon's DIGIC DV system makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Digital Stills
With its 1.33-megapixel resolution, you can capture digital stills up to 1280 by 960 pixels (for 4 x 6-inch prints). Additionally, the Optura 10's Simultaneous Photo Record featureenables you to record high-quality video to a MiniDV tape and e-mail-ready digital photos (640 x 480 pixels) to a memory card at the same time. You can also capture a rapid succession of photos just like the motor drive on a camera. With a single press of a button, the Opture 10 records 30 VGA (640 x 480) frames at a rate of 3 frames per second or 10 SXGA (1280 x 960) frames at 2 frames per second.

Images are stored on the included 8 MB Secure Digital memory card; the camcorder is also compatible with MultiMedia (MMC) cards.

More Features

  • The Advanced Accessory Shoe allows you to add optional lights, flashes, and microphones.
  • Manual controls include focus, AE shift, shutter speeds, and white balance.
  • Direct print feature with optional Canon Card Photo Printers CP-100 and CP-10 and select Canon Bubble Jet Printers.

Inputs and Outputs
The Optura 10 standard DV IEEE1394 port (also referred to as Firewire), which provides a lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines. It also features USB 1.1 connectivity for transferring still photos

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 520 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 20 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

Size and Contents
The camcorder measures 3 x 7.3 x 3.6 inches and weighs 1.4 pounds (620 grams). This package includes the Optura 10 camcorder, 8 MB Secure Digital memory card, battery (BP-508), power adapter (CA-570), wireless controller, shoulder strap, stereo video cable, USB cable, Digital Video Solution CD-ROM, and DV Messenger software CD-ROM. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Quality for the Price
I repaired optical equipment for the Navy for 15 years and am quite particular in regards to the optical equipment I purchase. I found these Binoculars to be an outstanding value. The binoculars are constructed very well. The rubber coating makes them very comfortable to hold but kind of on the heavy side. The brightness was quite impressive despite only having a 32mm objective lens. The eye relief is acceptable for those who wear glasses. I have used them in all kinds of weather and in the short time I have owned a pair I have found they can take quite a beating. Granted with optics you always get what you pay for but for the price of these binoculars I don't feel that you can beat them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best waterproof binocular in price range
These are a great value with good eye relief (18 mm, important for use with glasses), easy to hold and focus, good sized exit pupil (8/32 = 4 mm), wide field of view (395'), and not too heavy (26 oz.) A large exit pupil is important on a moving boat; it's easier to keep the image in view. They appear to be rugged; I and several other people used several pairs of these for several years, and none of them went out of alignment.
Minuses are:
(1) they do not focus close (minimum 19 feet), which is a major drawback for bird and butterfly watching but fine for boating,
(2) the optics are not phase corrected so images are a bit soft,
(3) the eyecups on the ones I used roll up and down which is tedious if you often switch between use with glasses and without, and may eventually cause the rubber to crack. However, the photos of the newer models suggest they now have rigid eyecups that pull or twist up or down, which are much better.

Birders and other serious users should look at slightly more expensive waterproof roof prism models that all focus closer (5-6'), are phase corrected, have a bit more light and larger exit pupil (5 mm), and have eyecups that click up & down: the Celestron Regal LS 8x42 or Eagle Optics Ranger Platinum 8x42 (both made by Celestron) or the new Nikon ATB 8x42. All cost between $300-$400 at discount and weigh about the same as the Canon 8x32. I own the Celestrons and they are great. There is also a Pentax 8x42 DCF waterproof with similar specifications but it costs a bit more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ranger Platiunum NOT made by Celestron
The above review is actually ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT! Ranger Platiunum Class binoculars are NOT made by Celestron. They are made by Eagle Optics independently. Call them and ask! :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good optics for the price
I compared this model in a sporting goods store to similar sized $500-1000 models from well known binoc. makers and to some other moderately priced units in the $100-250 range. I thought it outdid the other moderate units in handling and image quality and came pretty close to several of the high end models. For our limited uses this product is excellent. Canon is well known in camera optics but has not been well known in the binocular market and this non IS model is their way of breaking into the market. I use a Zeiss microscope everyday and appreciate good optics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brightest binocular I ever used!
We bought this to bring to Everglades for birding and alligator watching and what a world of difference it is from my cheap compact one! The scope is so big and bright it makes looking into the binocular a pleasure and no longer strains the eyes. Sometimes I feel it's even brighter than seen with naked eye. The only drawback is it's larger and heavier than my compact one but I wouldn't mind this little inconvenience for the quality. I'm ready to toss out my old cheapie compact one... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
I bought this printer because I travel a lot. The first time I used it, it printed only half a page. After repeated requests for help, I got it to print --- quit working almost exactly to the date that the warranty ran out. Canon not helpful at all. I am looking for another portable printer but it will not be a Canon.

5-0 out of 5 stars five star
I am in search of a handy printer which has a print quality and speed like laserjet printer to print only four lines on a bankers cheque.I found this product while browsing but do not know about it.Does this is worth for printing cheques ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little printer
This is a great little printer. It is a little slow but its quality is great. It is quite small and compact, perfect for a traveling business man. All in all this is a great printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Going Strong Two Years Later ...
I have nothing but good things to say about the BJC-80. I've had it for two years, use it almost daily (mostly for color graphics printing) and it's still going strong. It travels well and is very convenient to use. Black and white print quality is excellent and color print quality is out of this world. I have the battery pack and use infrared with my Thinkpad notebook (something about wireless printing that can really impress a client!). I also use the scanning adapter - works fine on the road, but I prefer a flatbed scanner for most jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A versatile, rugged and economical portable printer
My company sells Home Inspection software (Palm-Tech Inspector) and many of our inspectors have commented on how much they like the Canon BJC-80. It is light, easy to carry, and has a good page feeder. In our tests, the BJC-80 averages 150-170 pages of full text per mono cartridge in draft mode. Its color graphics are good for a portable printer. Infrared communication is a little slower than its competition, but as a cabled solution it is untouchable.

We at Palm-Tech reccomend the BJC-80 to our clients every day. ... Read more

The Canon EOS Rebel 2000 is an affordable, lightweight, andfull-featured automatic 35mm SLR for both beginning and advancedamateur photographers. It offers a host of special modes for specificshooting situations, including full auto, manual, night scene, portrait, landscape, and more. It also has shutter-speed priority andaperture priority modes--although most users will inevitably leave thecamera in full auto mode a majority of the time and the cameraperforms very well that way. Just remember that the empty rectanglesymbol on the mode dial is for full auto.

Some other basic features include an impressive seven-point autofocussystem, LCD panel with extensive information display, three exposuremetering modes (evaluative, partial, and centerweighted), autoexposure bracketing, a multiple exposure function, and depth-of-fieldpreview. The autofocus system is incredibly responsive, and includesseven focusing points that can be set individually for super creativeshooting. In other words, using the LCD panel as a guide, you can setthe camera to automatically focus on the far right focus point (or anyof the other points) so your main subject doesn't have to be in themiddle of the frame to be in focus in a snap.

In fact, most settings can be adjusted in creative ways on the Rebel2000, like the exposure level, which can be set to overexpose orunderexpose up to two full stops for tricky lighting situations whereyou might want to fool the camera's metering system. It also has asmall, built-in pop-up flash, plus a hot shoe for an additional flashunit. Overall, we found this camera to be smartly designed with anattractive look and a comfortable feel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get this printer!
Get this printer if you're in the market for a printer that will handle text documents efficiently as well as print top quality photographs,(...).

I printed out a borderless photo on the supplied sample of 4 x 6 paper and the quality is unbelievable. Just simply stunning.

And even web pages and text documents on plain paper at the "standard" setting look good enough to eat.

I bought this to replace a two year old Epson C80 whose black ink nozzle had become irreparably clogged. The eventual clogging of these Epson inkjets is a widely reported problem. Whether using generic inks (I used Carrot Ink cartridges) contributes to this or not, I don't know, but it's moot anyway, since Epson ink cartridges were so outrageously expensive, I couldn't have used the printer without using cheaper generic inks.

The Canon is one of the most satisfying hardware purchases I've made.

Other advantages:

It handles text quickly and beautifully.

It has a 5 cartridge ink system with separate blacks for text and photo and the Canon cartridges are affordable.

It's unbelievably quiet, especially in--yes--"quiet mode" (which does reduce printing speed a little (not noticeably to me).

The photo paper tray for 4 x 6 sheets works great.

The print head can be replaced.

Additional advantages if you're a Mac user:

It will work wirelessly with an Airport Extreme Base Station and it works beautifully with OS 10.3 (Panther).

Disadvantages:

Yes, there is no USB cable. I guess I can understand this, since most inkjet printers can't be repaired, and have to be disposed of, so I guess Canon figures you'll have a USB cable sitting around.

Yes, you have to install the print head, and I was a little fearful snapping it in but I had no problems.

And yes, you have to align the print head, but you can do an automatic alignment using the printer utility software.

For Mac users, at least, don't waste time installing the printer driver from the CD, as it is out of date. Download the latest driver from the Canon website. And be sure to repair permissions after installing the driver, as many of them were out of whack after the driver installation.

All in all, this is one of the most satisfying hardware purchases I've made.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a deal !!!
This is my first photo printer. I purchased at AMAZON.com for $ 123.00. ( that included free shipping - thanks, AMAZON)

I am so delighted with the print quality and speed. I did my homework online reading many product reviews of the various photo printers available. I wanted the best quality without all the bells and whistles i.e. displays, card readers etc.
This printer does a fantastic job ! Just be aware that all paper is not created equal. The sample pack of CANON paper made extraordinary photos. I did my own tests with other brands of 8 1/2 X 11 glossy photo brand papers. I shopped at BJs and COSTCO and ended up buying over $100 of 7 brands of paper. Among those were : KODAK, HP, POLAROID and other lesser known brands. The best performance was by the POLAROID brand supergloss from COSTCO at 19.99 for 120 sheets. The POLAROID paper was equal to, maybe even a little better than the CANON sample pack.
One other recommendation - buy your replacement ink from inkgrabber.com. Very inexpensive and good quality ink.

You will be happy with this CANON i860 printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional looking pics!!!!!
I am absolutely amazed and impressed with the i860. Canon includes all the ink and a few sheets of their photo paper pro so that you can print out photos from the get go. I gave it a whirl and not only was it simple, the photos came out looking like processed film photos! I was so excited I showed them to my husband and he agreed, even on the lowest setting for standard photo prints, the prints looked awesome!

The camera I am currently using is the Fuji Finepix S3000. Excellent camera, that takes excellent photos. The end result used in conjuction with this printer is professional looking photos.

Beyond photo printing, regular printing is awesome too. I used cheap paper from Walmart to print out everyday stuff and it looks great. I haven't had it long enough to know how quickly the ink will go, but the ink cartridges for this are very cheap in comparison to others, plus with individual tanks, you only replace the color that is empty. Plus, there are also many different remanufactured cartridges out there for this printer, so you can get ink very cheaply.

I would recommend this printer to ANYONE I know. I really am enjoying it and am always looking for things to print!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice printer but....
A very nice printer but it's already obsolete. Canon is replacing this model (i860) with the soon to be released PIXMA iP4000 Photo Printer. The iP4000 will be even faster and feature automatic duplex printing. The iP4000 will have the same street price $149 USD. Hopefully, the quality of the iP4000 will exceed that of the i860 but its anyone's guess at this point. If you're considering the i860 I'd suggest that you wait a month until the iP4000 is released especially now since the $30 rebate on the i860 has expired (July 17). The other option is buying the i960 instead. Decisions, decisions...

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Printer
I purchased this printer based on the top Consumers Reports rating it received plus the excellent reviews I've read of Amazon's customers reviews. Believe me, all the good comments about this printer are right on. It has worked perfectly and prints outstanding documents. I have not yet ventured into printing photo prints, but with the recent purchase of a digital camera, I am confident it will produce the excellent results I expect. Without hestitation, I endorse all the 5 star ratings this printer has received. Purchase with confidence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Canon Triumphs Again!
This is the successor to the EOS Elan 7. It is what the Elan 7 could have been, should have been, and, finally, is. Though the Elan 7 didn't leave much to be desired, there were a couple of modifications that would have made it the perfect camera for intermediate to advanced photographers. These improvements are an illuminated external LCD, better light metering, and faster AF.

The new finish and emblems are gorgeous. The finish is extremely matte, so it's very dark and handsome, and the Elan 7n logo is now a relief on a plaque attached to the body that's also holographic, instead of the painted on white and red logo of the old Elan 7. Though this has nothing to do with its ability to produce amazingly focused and metered images, it sure makes it one heck of an attractive body.

It is arguably one of the quietest 35mm SLR cameras ever made, and I agree. Its whisper drive film transport produces noise so quiet you can only hear it if your ear is pressed right to the body. The mirror and shutter action, though audible, are also well below the sound levels heard in most other cameras. It makes the higher-end Canons, and just about all 35mm Nikons, Minoltas, and Pentaxes sound like gun shots by comparison. Also, when the silent film rewind option is set in the camera's custom functions, this, too, cannot be heard without pressing one's ear to the body. But, even its high-speed film rewind is quiet, if you ask me, and it takes only 5 seconds to rewind a 24-exposure roll of film!

Its auto-focus system is the fastest any Elan has ever seen. It can track things moving at a whopping 31 miles per hour at close distances! Trust me, this is fast! Only the rarest of sporting events would pose a challenge to this camera's AF system.

Its light metering, especially its new E-TTL II flash metering, is almost frighteningly intelligent and accurate. When used with an EX series Speedlite, the camera uses distance information from the lens plus its readings from the 35-zone light meter (both from an ambient light reading and a pre-flash reading) to calculate an appropriate flash exposure. This works in much the same way Nikon's 3D-matrix metering does, so, now, Nikon has some good competition in this category. I find that my Canon Elan 7n with the 420EX Speedlite produces exposures that are just as beautiful as those produced by Nikon systems. And, the high-speed flash sync is wonderful, because I can shoot with wide-open apertures and not worry about not being able to use the flash with the higher shutter speeds that result.

Its shooting speed is a grin-inducing 4 frames per second. Even the EOS 3 only does 3.5 fps without the incredibly expensive power booster with the Ni-MH battery pack, and the Nikon N80 only does about 2.5 frames per second. Oh, and you can get a battery pack for the Elan 7n (the BP-300) that will let you use AA batteries while providing you with an extended horizontal grip for better stability, a vertical grip for more comfortable work in the vertical orientation, and vertical shutter release and exposure lock buttons. Even the Nikon N-80 doesn't offer a vertical grip or shutter release with its battery pack.

This camera features mirror lockup, with the ability to use the RC-1 or RC-5 infrared wireless shutter remote. So, now, not only do you not get camera shake from the mirror going up during macro photography, but you also don't have to touch anything attached to the camera such as a shutter release cable, which could also cause camera shake. That's awesome.

The Elan 7n also lets you customize its settings and performance with 13 custom functions. This includes mirror lockup (another feature missing from the Nikon N80 or lower-end Canons), leaving the film leader out after rewinding it, controlling what the various buttons on the body do, as well as how the camera controls auto-focus assist lights, the flash, etc.

And, let's not forget its 7-point wide-area auto-focus, with selectable points and light metering being linked to the selected focus point.

All of these features, plus several I didn't even mention, make for extremely reliable point-and-shoot simplicity for the casual or inexperienced photographer who wants to get great shots without the hassle of learning all the stuff that's involved in true hands-on photography, yet the camera provides more features than even the pros can shake a stick at. And, it does it for around $300.00, which is 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of comparable bodies.

Canon has triumphed once again!

CON's:

-My only complaint about this camera is its lack of a real focus assist beam. Most of the EOS bodies have built-in near-infrared focus assist lights that project patterns of vertical, horizontal, or combinations of both lines onto the subject for low-light and low-contrast AF operation. Why on Earth Canon decided to make the Elan 7/7n's built-in flash the AF assist light seems to defy all conventional logic and wisdom. First, it fires a short but rapid burst of flashes that are not only annoying to the user, but generally frightening to living subjects (I used it in a restaurant once with my Elan 7, and people actually screamed in terror...I've since learned to disable this in the custom functions...in fact, it was the first CF I set when I got the Elan 7n). Second, if it's being used for low-contrast subjects, well, it just doesn't help there at all, because it doesn't add any contrasting patterns for the AF system to focus on. However, when you attach an external flash, this problem is usually solved, because most dedicated flash units have focus assist beams. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The sleek, compact Elph Z3 from Canon slips easily into a purse or pocket, and its stylish, futuristic design and advanced features make this APS camera a must-have for gadget lovers.

With all the attention Canon's Digital Elph series has been receiving, it's easy to forget that the first Elph models were film cameras. This latest-generation model has much in common with its predecessors, including a chrome-and-aluminum body, diminutive dimensions, and use of the Advanced Photo System (APS) format.

Refinements for this model include a longer, lower shape--less like a deck of cards and more like a cell phone--and a backlit status LCD that emits a cool blue glow at the push of a button. Several other features were revised to improve photo quality, including a redesigned lens and a newly developed passive autofocus system. Additional features include a 2.3x zoom, spot metering, self-timer, and a five-mode flash with red-eye reduction.

A lithium CR123A battery provides power, and the camera uses APS film, a format jointly developed by five leading photo companies in 1996. The APS format is designed to take advantage of a number of technological advances developed in the decades since the introduction of 35mm film. Here are the main advantages to the APS format:

  • Size and convenience: An APS cartridge is smaller than 35mm, and the film is completely enclosed, which simplifies film loading.
  • Midroll rewind: Many cameras let you switch film midroll, allowing you to shoot in both color and black and white. Each roll has an indicator on top that lets you know if the film inside is unused, partially exposed, totally exposed, or developed. After developing, the negatives remain inside the cartridge for protection and long-term storage.
  • Three print sizes: Most APS cameras let you choose from three proportions for your prints--"classic," which is a 3:2 ratio like 35mm; "HDTV," which is a 16:9 wide-screen format, and "panoramic," which is a long 3:1 print.
  • Magnetic information storage: The film is coated with a magnetic layer much like a videotape. This layer can store information from the camera that can be used during developing and printing to make the best possible prints. This also means that photo time and date information can be printed on the back of each picture instead of the front.

The two biggest drawbacks to the format are size and availability. The negative is approximately half the size of 35mm, so each photo has less detail than an equivalent 35mm negative. This can result in pictures that look grainy, especially when enlarged. Though the format is popular, it's still relatively new, so the film can be harder to find than 35mm film and developing may be slightly more expensive. ... Read more
