5-0 out of 5 stars Great glass!!!
What can I say? Yes, it's a bit expensive. And yes, it weighs about a ton. But the quality of this lens is absolutely great. If you own a DSLR like the D30, D60 or 10D this lense effectively becomes a 25.6-56 mm zoom. Which is great since there aren't that many high quality moderate wide-angle lenses available for these DSLR's. If used on a 1Ds or a film SLR then the 16-35 suddenly becomes the stuff that dreams are made of. This is one hell of a lens! If you are planning to buy a wide-angle zoom lens for your EOS camera and are considering the purchase of a non-Canon lens, don't do it! I used a few of those before buying the 16-35 f/2.8L USM and regretted it almost from day one. Yes, they are cheaper, but if you're serious about photography in the long run you'll end up buying the real thing anyway. So better wait and save up a litlle longer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performance
I've had this copier for nine months now (a previous Canon copier had given us ten years of good service) and am thoroughly pleased with it. It has no warm-up time at all, the paper tray is ample and you can use a side slot to get a quick copy on a different color or type of paper if you want. It's quick, makes multiple copies, you can increase/decrease the image size, and it has very intuitive controls. Fairly quiet and fast as well. Quite a good buy, really.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good little copier
We use this in a fairly busy one physician doctors office and we have found it to be dependable. It's fairly quiet, and gives us good quality copies.
What more can you ask. Another good thing about this one is, there a good quality generic toner cartridges available on the web. That really is a plus when your doing a lot of copies per month, like we are.

2-0 out of 5 stars I would buy something else
My office recently purchased this copy machine. After 2 months of use the paper started to jam every other copy. When I called for service I got a HUGE run around and finally took it back to the store where it was purchased. They helped me figure out the problem and showed me how to "fix" it. It is a very temporary solution and I have to "fix" it every 3rd time I use the copier. For the money I spent, I would buy something else!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best copier out there!
We have this printer in our office for more than 3 years now and this copier performed flawless. I like the fact that it needs no time to warm up at all unlike other copiers that need about a minute to warm up before you can use it. And the speed is adequate for small office use, it is fast enough and makes very clean copies. It is also very quiet. I highly recommand this copier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy for Home Office
I purchased this copier 2 months ago. Setup and operation instructions very clear and easy to follow including installing the toner cartridge. Copies very clear and sharp. No dark edges on copies as I have experienced on another copier (Sharp). Copies come out smooth with no curls and are straight. I mainly use the copier for small quantities. Only problem I encountered was a paper jam when making 40 copies of 10 pages. This I think could be avoided if I had fanned the copier paper before loading. I have been using letter paper with 84 brightness with better than average quality. Copier is fairly quiet. It is a very handy tool and very convenient for immediate copies at home. I did not rate the copier a 5 star because I want to see how reliable it will be over time. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The successor to Canon's popular A70, the entry-level PowerShot A75 is a surprisingly advanced model with a 3.2-megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, and more manual features than you'll find on most digital point-and-shoots. Featuring a high-tech design with aluminum front cover and metallic handgrip, the PowerShot A75 combines a sense of both the modern and the traditional.

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot A75 has a maximum 3.2-megapixel resolution for images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels. You'll have the depth and detail you need to create beautiful prints and impressive online results. It also has 1600 x 1200, 1024 x 768, and 640 x 480 resolution modes.

It's is equipped with a 5.4-16.2mm zoom lens (35mm film equivalent: 35-105mm) for a 3x optical zoom. It also featuresa smooth 3.2x digital zoom, for a 9.6x total zoom. The 9-point AiAF is capable of focusing the 3x optical zoom quickly even when the subject is off-center and can be switched to single point (center) AF. An auto-assist beam helps to focus in low light conditions and the camera has a 5cm closest focusing distance.

Movie Mode
In addition to still images, the PowerShot A75 can also capture video with audio (and even edit within the camera). Individual movie clips are limited to 3 minutes maximum per clip, and you have three resolution options: 640 x 480(VGA), 320 x 240, or 160 x 120.

The PowerShot A75 has 12 shooting modes that not only let you take as much or aslittle creative control as you want, but offer perfect preset parameters for common shooting situations including portraits, landscapes, night scenes and sports. In addition, the camera has a new Special Scene Mode that deliverseven under the most challenging conditions.

  • Built-in flash with Auto, Red-Eye ReductionON/ OFF, Slow-Sync modes
  • Shutter speed: 15 to 1/2,000 seconds

Canon Technology Features

  • Digic Imaging Processor: While much technical discussion of digital cameras centers around the optics and the CCD sensor, the complex task of image rendering is the job of the image processor--the "brains" of a digital camera. Canon's latest, exclusive DIGIC Imaging Processor significantly enhances digital camera performance in numerous areas. DIGIC's high-speed signal processing is combined with high-capacity buffering to give Canon digital cameras fast response and continuous shooting capability unmatched by other digital cameras. DIGIC delivers longer battery life and beautiful, rich color rendition with far fewer white saturation problems. And DIGIC's unequaled precision delivers clear, noise-free images that are demonstrably superior.
  • iSAPS Technology: Canon iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology dramatically improves the performance of AF (Autofocus), AE (Auto Exposure), and AWB (Auto White Balance). By analyzing a huge volume of photography data, accumulated over 60 years and the manufacture of over 150 million cameras, Canon engineers arrived at statistical relationships among focal length, focus distance, scene brightness, and other factors. Equipped with this "fore knowledge" Canon PowerShot cameras can optimize AF/AE/AWB settings for any given scene more rapidly and more effectively.
  • Multi-point AiAF: Canon's wide-area, multi-point AiAF (artificial intelligence autofocus) automatically selects one or more focusing points based on factors, such as subject position and motion. AiAF works in conjunction with iSAPS Technology to more quickly and accurately achieve autofocus under a wide variety of shooting conditions. You get fast, accurate AF whether you hold the camera horizontally or vertically, with stationary or moving subjects, with off-center subjects, and even in low-light/low-contrast lighting.

Direct Printing/Sharing
The PowerShot A75 introduces a new Print/Share button that speeds and simplifies printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows XP, Me, 2000, and 98 computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or placement in e-mail. When connected to a Canon Compact Photo printer, a Movie Print mode divides the selected clip into equal parts and prints thumbnails of a maximum 63 equally spaced frames onto a single sheet of Postcard Size Paper.

Storage and Transfer
Images and video are stored on CompactFlash memory cards (Type I only) and the included 32 MB card holds approximately 33 images at the Large/Fine setting.Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1 connectivity, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by four AA batteries (alkalines included; rechargeable NiMH batteries recommended). With the LCD on, you will get approximately 250 shots on when using alkalines, or 550 shots when using NiMH batteries. 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Camera
I am very happy with this camera, The A75 has excellent image quality, Canon's new DIGIC processor does its job very well, The Canon AiAF autofocus system is more or less a joke, But this camera has plenty of manual controls to get excellent results, The macro mode is cool, Get the accessories and lens adapters and you are into a new world of Marco Photography, Many other cameras use a proprietary lithium-ion battery pack. It's nice to be able to use rechargeable or "off the shelf" batteries in this camera, Battery life with NiMH 2200mah or better is excellent, This camera is a great combination of well balanced performance, Excellent image quality and ease of use, all at a very affordable price. Go get it..!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Video Quality ! Great Pics !, Which canon to buy ?
I wanted only canon after owning Panasonic, Sony & Fuji Cameras, Canon Simply does it great ! Menus are awesome & software is even better.

A lot of people didn't note this ! Canon has great video quality, with A75 you can zoom before starting to record the video. It beats my $1000 DV Camcorder !!!!!!!!!!!

Canon Pic quality requires no further explanation. Esp with Canon i960 printer, it is fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!

1. I picked A75 over A 70 becos of bigger LCD, 9-point AF, nice very useful pre-set pic modes like indoor, beach, foliage etc.
2. I picked A75 over A80 becos of better video mode (640), less heavy, brighter/bigger LCD screen, cheaper.
3. I picked A75 over S1 IS becos of AF Assist Lamp & less purple fringing.
4. A75 uses AA batteries as opposed to S50/S60. Also, S50/60 doesn't support lens attachments easily. A75 costs half of S50/60 & produces equally good pics.
5. My next replacement will be New model that replaces S1 IS with 5MP, AF Assist-lamp & cheaper Memory card of 2-4GB capacity, for now i am very happy with A75.

5-0 out of 5 stars true love.
hi. i've used a few different digital cameras and a bunch of 35mm film cameras. the cannon A(any #) series is, by far, the most amazing things ever in their price range.<br /><br />i had a little problem with the screen on my A70, but i learned how to deal with it. i use my camera several times a day, every single day. even though it's had problems, it has also withstood much ware and tear.<br /><br />for normal usage this camera should be MORE than fine. it is easy to learn how to use quickly, and get good with shortly after that.<br /><br />i recommend it highly. it is the only inanimate object i have ever felt an emotional attachment to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry Mom
I just purchased this camera for my mom for Christmas, and I decided to try it out before I gave it to her. I LOVE this camera, it is definately the best buy for the money. The color is great, and it is light, easy to use, and the batteries last fairly long. My 7 year old son took some awesome pictures on the Auto setting. It is a great camera for non-professionals that want great famliy pictures and more. Sorry mom I might have to keep this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camer for the value!
I purchased this camera about a month ago on a budget of $200 or less. I wanted at least 3.0 MP. After looking around and reading a few reviews I purchased this camera for $199.99 and have really enjoyed using this camera. I think it takes great pictures for the price range and options it has. <br /><br /><br /><br />I would only change a few things. For it to be lighter ( batteries add quite a bit of weight to the camera) and for the picture screen to be a little bigger and clear from all angles. I have to look straigt on to view or show the pictures. I would love to have a better close up zoom too. I agree that the action shutter speed can be a bit slow, BUT, I know I will have to "upgrade" to get more advanced features. <br /><br /><br /><br />I was bery impressed with a picture I took of my son in the dark using the night preset mode (I love all the preset modes, I think it has 15) and I couldn't even see my son in the picture viewer but I took the picture anyway. It came out awesome! Even when I loaded it on the computer, it still looked good. I even got the moon one night however, again, the zoom didn't prove to be strong enough for a good picture. But, hey, The Moon?<br /><br /><br /><br />The A75 works great for taking pictures of my son, vacationing and products for my website at a very affordable price. I would recommend this to anyone wanting an entry level, easy to use camera on a budget. <br /><br /><br /><br />It also came with a memory card, so that was a bonus for me not to have to buy additional memory. If you look around you can get this camera for $189.00 online and sometimes with FREE ADDITIONAL memory with in store specials. GREAT DEAL!! <br /><br /><br /><br />I also looked through the manuals that came with the camera and they had zoom lenses and waterproof cases that could be bought to go with it and the front lense screws off to add the lens to the camera. I am going to look into that to see if I can get my better zoom by adding a zoom lens?<br /><br /><br /><br />p.s. I helped a stranger take a picture of their family and they had a mid-range olympus digital and I was not impressed. It was lighter but felt cheap. So, knowing what I have and what I paid, I was very happy I had the A75 with me! :) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Canon ripped me off
I am so frustrated with my Canon Elura. Apparently Canon Eluras have a structural flaw, and after a few months using it a message to eject the tape starts to pop all the time. Some people are even considering a collective lawsuit against Canon. The camera was great when it was working. But I am pretty convinced that the fate of 95% of all Canon Eluras after 6 months are the same as mine: the garbage bin. Just check all the online reviews. If you want a "perishable" good, then go ahead and buy your Elura. If you want a "durable" good, I would recommend you a Sony. It lasts for decades. I read the bad reviews about the Canon Elura 85 and decided to spend several hundred dollars on one. I Lost my money and my camera after a few months (Canon warranty and factory service are a joke). I took my chances. Would you take yours?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good camcorder but ........
I bought this camcorder recently and I am satisfied with its performace. The only reason I am taking off a few ** (stars) from this product is due to the reason that you cannot transfer videos from MiniDV to your computer using USB port. It required IEEE 1394 firewire cable (Cannon does not supply this cable with the camcorder) and a computer which has compatible port (not common in many computers and so you end up buying a suitable card for your computer if you wish to transfer the videos). ... Amazon.com Product Description

A compact scanner from Canon, the DR-2080 provides high quality color scans and fits onto nearly any convenient surface. A 24-bit color depth provides brilliant colors, while a 600 x 600 dpi maximum resolution ensures that even the fine print is clear and legible.

The DR-2080C connects to a host computer via either a USB 2.0 or SCSI-II port, and supports Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, and NT operating systems. Able to handle originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches, the DR-2080C still has a very small 11.7-by-3.89-inch footprint, freeing up valuable desktop space for other uses, while a weight of just 5.5 makes transportation a snap.

The included Canon CapturePerfect software provides a quick and easy editing tool for your scans, and sports a scan-to-email feature that lets you send originals directly from the scanner. Optical character recognition allows you to easily create searchable text files out of your scans, while a pre-scan feature lets users adjust scan settings on one page, then apply those settings to an entire batch scan.

Scanning speeds in simplex mode are as fast as 20 ppm, while duplex mode supports speeds of up to 40 ppm. The automatic document feeder lets you scan up to 50 pages with the touch of a button and supports originals of up to 0.2 mm in thickness. The DR-2080C also comes backed with a one year limited warranty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful little scanner
This is actually a very good scanner. It scans pretty quickly at 200 dpi/black-and-white OCR - it took me about an hour to scan in and OCR 400+ pages of class readings. I'm not exactly sure about the timing, since I wandered away every so often for a while. The duplex features are great - especially the option to remove blank pages. You can also change the threshold on what the software considers a blank page - it asks you to specify percent coverage, although they use a different term.

Complaints about this product that caused me to give it less than 5 stars:

1. As the last reviewer said, putting in the paper adjusters prevent the flap from closing.

2. It states on the DR-2080C's brochure (downloadable from Canon's website) that it is "Able to scan batches of mixed documents of different sizes, shapes, and weight." I took this to mean that you can drop differently-sized papers into the scanner, and it will scan it for you correctly and automatically, thus not requiring you to sit there and feed a stack of differently-sized papers one-by-one through the machine. I was mistaken however - the user manual says that you should sort your papers by different sizes and shapes before scanning them. When you do drop papers of different sizes in there, it will try to scan them, but the smaller sheets will be skewed and then incorrectly de-skewed.

3. Feeding stacks of paper into the scanner is a tad tricky - you have to wiggle it around a bit or the scanner will not be able to detect that any papers are in the ADF.

Canon also sells additional rollers so that you can replace them yourself without having to return the scanner to the manufacturer. If you use a Linux system, so long as you have a kernel that supports USB, a copy of VMWare (you can download a 30-day trial version for free) and a copy of Windows, the scanner works just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little scanner
This is a great scanner, and you can't beat the price. As others have already noted, it is better than some scanners costing thousands more. I love it's size, speed, and duplex scanning features. I do have some complaints though:

1. Installing the paper guides prevents the dust cover from being closed

2. The deskew and border removal functions don't always work as expected (they remove more than required, and you can't control how much to remove)

3. The bundled software is clunky and stupid (for example, you can't use the arrow or page up/page down keys to navigate through a scanned document). Ditto for the help files, although that seems to be true of most software from Japanese hardware makers; for heavens sakes, folks, hire some native English speakers! The software also has some bugs, e.g., it frequently has "file access errors" when trying to append pages to existing files. However, it is fairly easy to use, and is good enough for low volume scanning.

Some tips:

1. Don't adjust the paper guides too snugly against the paper; the automatic feeder requires some "wiggle room" to catch the paper.

2. Use the "Scan ahead" mode to speed up scanning.

3. If you're creating PDFs, get Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not the free reader) to manipulate your PDFs.

4. Set up custom paper sizes to quickly scan odd-sized documents like credit card statements, etc.

In spite of my complaints about the software, I'd highly recommend this scanner (in any case, my complaints are moot if you use some other scanning software). In the week since I got this scanner, I've scanned more than two thousand pages, scanning for a few hours every day (most of the time was spent organizing and ordering the documents). My big, ugly filing cabinet is almost empty...hurray!

You can get a cheaper scanner from Visioneer, but the ADF on that sucks. The DR-2080C uses an almost straight-through paper path, so very thin, very thick, or creased paper doesn't jam as much as with scanners that use a U-shaped path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for travelling
This unit is small and compact, yet has some very nice features. I especially like the duplexing feature allowing it to scan BOTH sides in the same pass, no flipping a stack of documents over. It works from within Adobe, and Microsoft Office Imaging.

It does have a drawback, however, the drivers are not Windows XP, and it can be a bit disconcerting installing them. I finished the installation with no adverse affects (that I noticed) to my 2 laptops, and a stand alone machine.

If you travel and need a high speed scanner, I highly recommend this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Canon Quality
The Canon DR-2080 Duplex Color Scanner offers exceptional scanning for its small price tag. The output quality and speed of the DR-080 are comparable to competitive units 3 to 4 the cost and, in MANY cases, far superior to more costly units.

Although considered a "work group" level scanner, the DR-2080 will provide "Department" level productivity, limited only by original document size and daily duty cycles. Additionally, the DR-2080 comes with Canon's user friendly Scan utilities allowing very easy set-up and the ability to easily scan to a wide variety of file formats such as PDF, TIFF and JPEG.

The DR-2080's ease of use, superior output quality and reliability, as well as Canon's versatile, bundled software, will provide an effortless, stress-free scanning experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Enjoying
I recieved this camera for my graduation present. I really enjoy the little size and its capability. The digital effects that are possible to use are kind of neat, you can choose between easy and several different settings to be able to capture the best picture for the things you are shooting. It also has the ability to be transfered to your computer, which is nice, you can edit your clips. all in all this is a pretty nice product. HfHf ^^

2-0 out of 5 stars You can pass...
I bought this and owned it for two days. Its a decent MiniDV but you can do better at this price!

Noise was a major issue. The motor is just loud and it gets picked up in quiet scenes pretty bad.

Other than that the video recorded was of real good quality. But there was an issue with something going on when inserting a tape.It wasn't ejecting properly for some odd reason.I took it back after finding a deal on a Sony HC20 (that works a lot better/smoother than the Canon).

The only reason why I got this was because it was recommended by an Apple rep...well - this isn't the best MiniDV out there at this price.Panasonic has a fantastic MiniDV for almost the same price...I'd pass on this one guys...

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for price - NOISY!
I am curious to find out if anyone has this model and the noise is not audible? If you use the LCD it gets worse!

The picture is okay, and the price is not bad - I wish I read the reviews before I purchased!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you don't mind noise
I recently purchased the Zr100...I'm pretty camera literate and knew Canon to be a good brand. Brought the camera home and was playing with...when I was watching what I had recorded I noticed a "white noise" in the background...even when people were talking. The motor/fan on this camera is so loud that it really distorts and videos you take...it sounds like an old reel to reel is running 5 feet away. I called Canon about it and they suggested that I play background sound while recording to drown out the sound of the motor...well that doesn't work for video taping school plays etc...I'm returning this camera...hopefully not all MiniDVs have this problem. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Canon raises the stakes for all-in-one digital imaging devices with the release of the Canon Optura 400 (and its sibling Optura 500; see a comparison table at the end), which is as adept at shooting digital video as it is snapping high-resolution digital stills. Shorter and more lightweight than its predecessors, the brushed silver Optura 400 weighs just 1.2 pounds with tape and battery and measures 2.1 x 4.2 x 4.0 inches. It offers 2.2-megapixel resolution for fine video and photo details, a 10x optical zoom lens, image stabilization, built-in SD/MMC memory card slot, and PictBridge compatibility for direct printing of still photos to compatible printers.

Optics and Resolution
The Optura 400 has a 2.2-megapixel CCD, which produces 1230K effective pixels for video and 2 million effective pixels for still photos, for images up to 1623 x 1224 pixels (good enough for print enlargements up to 8 x 10 inches). Canon's camcorder lens features the same quality found in 35mm and broadcast TV cameras, and the Optura 400 has a 10x optical zoom lens that delivers good definition and contrast as well as a 200x digital zoom. In addition, the lenses feature a unique spectral coating to reduce flare and ghosting, resulting in optimal indoor and outdoor shots.

The RGB Primary Color Filter separates light passing through the lens into red, green and blue color components providing similar color quality found in professional 3 CCD camcorders, yielding truer more natural looking colors. Canon's DIGIC DV signal processing circuit makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and digital photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Shooting Video
With the high-resolution 16:9 widescreen mode, the Optura 400 utilizes the entire width of the CCD (unlike some systems that electronically stretch the picture vertically) retaining image quality and providing a wider horizontal angle of view that is ideal for creating a theater-like experience.A variety of Program Auto Exposure settings allow for easy, optimal shooting in a wide range of lighting situations. The Optura 400 is also equipped with Manual Audio Level Control, commonly found only on prosumer camcorder models, and a swivel grip and palm pad, providing maximum comfort when shooting for long periods of time.

The Motion JPEG Mode records your footage onto the Secure Digital memory card at 320 x 240 resolution, giving you up to 60 minutes of recording time on an optional 512 MB card.

Still Photos
The Optura 400 saves still image files to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB card is included with the camcorder). It offers a number of photographic controls that make it easy to get the right shot, including:

  • Selectable Focusing Points for bringing off-center subjects into sharp focus
  • Continuous Shooting Mode enables rapid fire shooting--up to 3 frames-per-second (1632 x 1224) or up to 5 frames-per-second (1280 x 960, 640 x 480)
  • Simultaneous Photo Recording lets you capture e-mail ready digital photos (640 x 480) while you record video
  • Auto Exposure Bracketing lets you shoot three photos-Ñnormal, underexposed and overexposed--with the press of one button
  • The Built-in flash with Red-Eye Reduction is perfect for taking photos at night, indoors, or filling in shadows
  • Horizontal & Vertical Trimming Function and Photo Review Function allow you to make edits directly in the camcorder
  • Stitch Assist enables you to capture and create breathtaking 360-degree panoramas
  • The Skin Detail Mode helps you take complimentary close-ups of people by softening details and reducing skin imperfections
Connect directly to any Canon CP-series Photo Printer or Canon Bubble Jet Direct Printer using the supplied USB cable. You can also connect directly to other Pictbridge compatible printers, and because the camcorder tags each photo you take with information based on Exif 2.2 Print standards, poor lighting and mistakes can be corrected automatically by the printer.

Other Features
The advanced Image Stabilization system works behind the scenes even when youÕre panning and zooming, shooting videos or photos. The Optura 400's large 2.5-inch LCD and color viewfinder helps you compose shots from any angle.

With the press of the Night Mode button, the camcorder automatically selects a slow shutter speed and increases the sensitivity of the CCD to brighten the image, while still preserving color. Two additional low-light settings can be assigned to the Night Mode button -- Super Night Mode and Night++ Mode. When selected, Super Night Mode automatically triggers the white LED Lamp when needed to enhance the subject for shooting. Night++ Mode is used in the toughest lighting situations, keeping the white LED Lamp on all the time.

Connectivity
The Optura 400 connects to Macs and Windows-based PCs via a Firewire terminal (also known as iLink or IEEE1394), enabling high video and audio quality during duplication or editing. An Analog Line-in/Out with Analog/Digital Converter allows you to easily transform your analog memories into digital, all in real-time. The camcorder also features a Network Mode, which enables you to remotely control your camcorder through the DVÊMessenger2 software application. Control the focus and zoom of your camcorder from a computer while streaming the video via its Firewire terminal.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Optura 400 digital video camcorder, rechargeable battery pack (NB-2LH), power adapter (CA-570), wireless controller (WL-D83), A/V cable, 8 MB SD memory card, USB cable, and Digital Video Solution CD-ROM, which includes:

  • Pinnacle Studio gives you every tool you need to easily capture video to your computer, edit footage, add titles, music, narration and special effects and then output the finished movie back to videotape, DVD or the web.
  • Pinnacle Instant Album can help you quickly organize your digital photos and video clips into interactive, high-resolution slideshows that can then be burned onto CD and DVD or watched on your TV with Instant PhotoAlbum
It's covered by a 1-year limited warranty (3 months for the video head part).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera
I agree with the 12 year old. I have used this camera for three weeks and think it is just great. I have been to two birthday parties indoors and the lighting was great,I used video and still pictures. I love that it is so quick and easy to go back and forth between the two.I have also used it in a Butterfly Museum and the pictures were so true to color that my friends want copies sent to thier computers. When I first bought this I was just looking for a plan digital camera and I'm so pleased that I chose this instead. When I bought it my children and I (ages 12 and 15)took a tape and the book and learned how to use it and tried every feature indoors and out and had such a good time and now we know how to use it.I suggest to the people who didn't read the book to go and open it and learn something. We think it great and will let our friends that are looking to buy a camera to give it a try. Also a great price for the features.

5-0 out of 5 stars All these other reviews are crap!!!!
Why is everybody so upset that it doesnt make indoors look like outside???
It doesnt make anything darker on the video filmed inside, it just gives an accurate depiction of what the lighting is really like. Its not going to make the scene look like you have 1000 watt bulbs everywhere, but that is realistic. Those people claiming that having the the video resembling the actual envirenent that is was shot in is bad, is a bunch of crap. Film in a dark area and the footage will dark. Shouldnt that be obvious??

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst camcorder i've ever owned!
I was looking to upgrade from my VHS-C to the Mini DV format since it is supposed to be much better, but believe that it was a big mistake getting this camcorder. To me the quality isn't much better than older formats and nothing to gawk about in awe as some may have you think. I will probably be using my VHS-C until it breaks now that I have seen this Mini DV format in action and how horrible it can be. In this review I would like to talk about why this camcorder is so bad.

PROBLEM #1: VIDEO QUALITY IN LOW LIGHT AND INDOORS

This camcorder records video that is absolutely horrendous in low light and indoors. My 3 year old Panasonic VHS-C is absolutely leaps and bounds above this camcorder indoors and outside at night time as far as quality is concerned. The picture quality is so bad that it is not even worth trying to watch unless you want a headache. The night mode that the camcorder has does absolutely nothing except slow the shutter speed down to the point where everything looks like distorted robot movement. As another reviewer stated I can not stress how bad the quality of low light and indoor video is on this camcorder but heres some comparisons. Old 8mm camcorders (the kind you view with a projector remember these) look 100 times better than the ZR85 as far as quality is concerned in these situations. My digital camera and VHS-C camcorder look like a Hollywood film production compared to the ZR85. Basically think in you're worst imagination what it can look like and then multiply those bad thoughts by 1000 to get a clear picture of how bad it is. This was not the fault of the lighting in my house or outdoors where I was recording, I tried using streetlights, LED flashlights, a 2.25million candlepower spotlight, halogen flashlights, my backyard 500 watt floodlight, all the lights in the house on, all the lights in the house off, etc and in every situation the video quality was pure garbage. I tried changing settings on the camcorder to improve it such as the low light setting, night mode, changing the white balance, shutter speed, etc, no improvement there either. I even went to the store and bought the light that mounts to the top of the camcorder and tried with that on and no improvement there either. The picture is so dark that even under any of these lighting conditions you can't see anything with clarity. I did have two other people with me at the same time recording with my digital camera and VHS-C and both of those were hugely better than the ZR85.

PROBLEM #2: OUTDOOR PICTURE QUALITY

I wasn't too impressed with the outdoor picture quality of this camcorder either. This was my first attempt at a Mini DV camcorder and I was expecting a big improvement over VHS-C but as it turns out they look about the same to me on a 36" tv. The outdoor quality is much much better than indoor however.

PROBLEM #3: BATTERY LIFE

I'm not sure how canon rates it's battery life or how others got more than me but the battery life is unacceptable on this camcorder. Using the LCD I got around 30 minutes before the thing was dead, with the viewfinder about 40 minutes, that is ridiculous.
RECOMMENDATION

As far as good things there really were none that I can think of about this camcorder compared to others I looked at in the store, and I'm hoping the store I bought it from will let me return it or exchange it even if I have to pay a restocking fee it's worth it to me. If you are looking for a Mini DV camcorder and want to occasionally shoot video indoors or at night I would recommend straying far away from this POS. I haven't tried any other models yet but I don't believe that any of them can be as bad as this thing. I may try one of the other brands with night vision before sticking to VHS-C but as of yet I haven't been convinced that Mini DV is worth changing to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible indoor video quality
We purchased this camcorder yesterday and have been extremely dissapointed in the quality of video. So much so, we will be returning it as soon as possible. When filming indoors, both at night with typical lighting in our living room, and during the day with typical lighting from the windows on a sunny day. The quality of the video is extremely bad, very grainy. It is so bad that it is not even worth watching. Had I received this camera for free, I would not waste my time filming anything inside. Maybe there are settings to improve this, or maybe our house has strange poor lights - but in any case - I do not have the time nor knowledge to mess with settings, nor am I going to buy a new house that has better lighting. Maybe my standards are too high. But I can not tell you how bad the indoor video was.

However, I went outside today in bright sunshine and made some recordings. I was very impressed with the quality of video in these circumstances. The optical zoom is very good, colors are great and sharp.

Knowing that I will be filming alot of video insdoors this camera is not acceptable. In fact, we also bought a regular Canon digital camera and the video it takes (only 30 seconds at a time) is actually much better than the ZR85. Not great, but alot better than the camcorder.

If you are looking for a home video camera, are not an expert videographer, looking for an inexpensive camera to film some videos indoors - than this is NOT the camera for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars be prepared for its tape noise
First when I got the camera (I purchased from online), I kind of like it. Very compact. It does not come with DV tape and I purchased one from local store. Once I load the tape and I heard the noise that the tape is rotating even without making any videos. I called Canon customer support and described the noise and was told it is like that and nothing particularly wrong with the one I got. When I told the custmoer representative that the camcorder my friend purchased from Sony does not seem have such problem and that guy simply replies 'OK'. Make me feel that since you chose Canon, you have to live with our problem. By the way, before I made the purchase, I read quite a few reviews about Canon poor customer services. Now I understood.

Regarding the SD card loaded with a lot of 'wallpaper'-like pictured as decscribed by the first reviewer, you can delete them. Thoese pictures are just protected, You can unprotect the pictures first and it will allow you to delete. But I suggest that you copy those pictures to your computer first before you do anything. Those are very nice background and you can use them as a frame, background for your pictures when you edit later on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best multifunction out there!
I did a month of research before buying this multifunction printer. I really wanted something to do it all. It had to do decent faxing, plus serve my needs for scanning and copying as well. I already have a high-end photo printer, so basic printing was fine for me.

This did all I hoped for and then some. The Fax worked great, I hooked it up to my home phone system and it does a great job of detecting voice versus fax calls and switching them appropriately. You'll hear the answering machine pick up for a second when sending a fax to it, but that's a very minor nit. Quality of the fax is nice. I did notice that it only redials 3 times on a busy signal, but I hope to find a function to set that higher. The document feeder is essential, you'll find a lot of multifunctions do not include one and you have to load the pages one at a time. It also has a nice cover for the paper feeder in the back, a nice feature if you do not print a lot.

Scanning is considerably slower than my old flatbed to get high quality but the results look good. Anything less than high quality is not that great, but fine for anything but photos.

The printing quality is not quite as good as my dedicated photo printer, but I doubt most home office users would notice. You'll still get very decent photos and color printing out of this, certainly far better than most multifunctions. It's good enough that if I did not already have a high end color injet, I probably would be fine with this one.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this printer and recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Multifunction
Even though more expensive than most competing products, this printer is worth the extra $$$. The print and copy speed is impressive. The print & copy quality is good on regular paper and is excellent on glossy photo paper. The fax quality is mediocre but I haven't experimented with the settings. Unlike some MFP's, the MP730 doesn't need the PC to copy or to send or receive a fax. I'm still using WIN98; the software installed quickly & easily and works very well. The unit is quiet and appears to be built to handle some abuse. The plastic seems to be heavier/thicker than that used on the HP's. The physical size is larger than fax or printer only units but it is the same size as comparable all-in-one models. The input paper tray is at the back of the machine so you can't push it flat against a wall but the MP730's output tray is slightly under the unit so the paper doesn't stick out as much as with the HP6110/7110. The advantage of the input tray at the back is a more straight through paper path which should result in less jams especially with thicker paper. The individual ink tanks should be less expensive in the long run. Depending on the volume, the initial price difference will be offset by on-going supply cost. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable value
This is my second Canon color inkjet. The first is just a printer, but based on my positive experience wiht that, I was confident in buying a Canon this time around as well. That confidence was reinforced with the MP730.

In a nutshell, the positives are:

- Surprisingly quick printing for an injet, even in color. Faster than the laser from just a few years ago that it replaces

- Excellent print quality -- tested it with color photos at full size and it's outstanding

- Very slick design... small footprint on the desk and looks good too.

- Both a flatbed AND fed copier -- this is very cool. I prefer to use the feeder most of the time (which is what my old multifunction had), but sometimes, if I'm copying a book or something, I wish I had a flatbed. This does both, again in a very compact size.

- Great Canon software and utilities for printing and other tasks

- Individually replaceable ink cartridges (saves money).

Just an outstanding unit -- I would have expected it to cost 2-3x it's price point.

The only downside, and this is a downside of inkjets generally, not the Canon specifically, is that ink is expensive and runs out faster than you think. Over the course of a couple years owning it, the cost of ink will likely outpace the cost of the printer itself.

But if you're deciding among multifunction units and among inkjets, this is a very good pick.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a Gem
Ok granted I've only had the unit a week or so...but it's been a really good week. Easy to get running and works like a dream, fax, scanner and copy unit are great and just printed out about a dozen foto's. This is a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars No need to look further, I already did it for you
I am a small business owner and bought the 730 for fax reasons mainly. I got a whole lot more than I paid for. This thing is great.

The photo print quality is awesome, it prints damn fast on all settings, has a flat bed, and you can reload the ink tubs individually. I looked at the HPs, the Epsons, the everbody elses, and this one took the cake. It doesnt come with an interconnect cord, so go to best buy get one before you try to hook the 730 up. It is large, so check your desk space before you buy.

For those of you with voicemail from your phone company - as opposed to an answering machine- you will need to get a distinctive ring pattern for the fax to pick up the call. The DRP usually is a double ring as opposed to a single ring. The machince recognizes this as a fax and picks it up. If the caller is a normal voice caller, your phone will do the normal single ring, and you will either pick up the call or let it go into voicemail.

The DRP is a second phone line into your house, but it will work on the same phone line as your voice line and is very cheap. So, only 1 call at a time or 1 fax at a time. I had to do some homework to figure this out, so pay attention and save yourself some time.

I would buy this again in a heartbeat if I open a second office. Amazon also has the best price for the 730, even better than what you can find on Ebay. ... Read more
