3-0 out of 5 stars Returned it with reluctance...
I bought this camera to replace our 7 year old VHS-C camcorder. It had most of the features that I was looking for: MiniDV, Optical zoom greater than 10x, batterly life greater than 1 hour, LCD geater than 2.5", built-in light, and memory card for digital pictures.

I returned it for one main reason- video quality is equal to that of my current camcorder. It gets worse under certain circumstances. (Disabling DIS didn't improve the picture quality.)

Every feature that was attractive to me turned out to be inadequate. Large LCD screen, but the image is not pleasing. Built-in video light barely lights closeby objects. No facility (shoe) to place external light or flash.

Still images are another big disappointment. I realize that I shouldn't expect great still pictures from a camcorder, but I don't think they should come out this blurry, dull, and hazy.

Memory card slot can accept various different media (SD, memory stick, etc.) - I think this is a very neat feature.

I was amazed by Nite Pix feature. Yes, you can record video in absolute darkness, but the objects have to be within close proximity (6 feet or so).

Fading option (between footages) is extremely disappointing. You have to keep the fade button pushed until the image fades out, then push the standby button, and then release the fade button. You have to do the same when you start recording again. Completely manual operation.

We own many Samsung products and I am very satisfied with each one of them. This product is not going to change my opinion on Samsung.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Features, Great Price
I love this camcorder. First off, it's a great deal. I did a lot of research and found this to be the best deal out of the lower cost camcorders. The 107's brother (the 105) is also a good camcorder but the features of the 107 really puts it over the top. The large LCD is great. Playback is awesome on the huge screen. The photo feature is nice to have but I would still use a digital camera in most cases. It can also record MPEG4 with audio. The low-light feature works great. The audio is great and has an input for mics or music. The analog input is great and pretty easy to use. It's a good way to get old home videos on your computer without a capture card. Also, despite other reviews, I think the picture looks pretty good. One tip of advice is to only use the DIS when you have to. If you leave it on that's when it's starts to look grainy. I don't know what else to say. Too many features to mention. Great camera. Would suggest to anyone.

Pros:
Large 3.5" LCD for great playback
Analog Input to save all those old videos
Great Night Recording
Great Audio
Microphone/ Audio Input
Picture looks more than fine for most people
Photo and Video recording on memory card

Cons:
Light isn't that bright
Video can look a little grainy but mainly when DIS is on

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Features and good price
After much research on the internet and in stores, I chose the Samsung SCD107....had it for a week and have been very pleased. All buttons and menus are easy to use. Picture and LCD view are average....very impressed with "nightpix" feature for shooting in the dark....you can shoot in total darkness, though it is a little grainy. Video looks very good hooked up to the TV whether it is in sunlight or indoors. Have also had no problem with tape insertion, read you manual and you will be fine. All in all I am very pleased with my selection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good entry-level cam
I found this DV camera to be an excellent product for the entry-level consumer. I wanted to try my hand at amateur moviemaking, amd picked this camera up cheap at Target, and so far, I've had no problems.
The picture quality is crisp and clear, although if you're looking for a particularly truer, more colorful picture, you would do best to upgrade to a 3 CCD camera.

Battery life is about the same as comparable models. The LCD viewscreen is big and bright, but the viewing angle could be a little wider- sometimes it can be tricky to tell how bright or dark your recorded video will be based on what angle you're looking at the screen with. Luckily, the little viewfinder does not share this problem, and you get londer battery life if you use it.

The package does not include a ieee firewire cable, so be sure to pick one up (a 4-pin-to-6-pin one) if you want to upload video to your computer for editing. When I got the cable, I had no problems importing video onto my Mac with iMovie.

As for the cassette-insertion problem outlined in one of the other reviews, yes, the way to insert a cassette could be a bit more self-explanatory, so I can see how some users might try to force the cassette tray back in and break this thing, but if you're patient and use your noggin, you'll realize it's not that complex. The camera opens, a tray come out, and a little caddy pops up. You put the cassette in the caddy, *then gently push the caddy back down into the tray*. The tray will then automatically retract back into the camera and you can close it up again. Pretty simple.

1-0 out of 5 stars My first review!
The is my intial review of the product. After extensive search, I could find only one other review out there. I bought this camcorder today (5/15/04)and rushed home to try it out. I powered it up, opened the "funky" tape tray, located inconveniently at the bottom of the camcorder, and inserted a tape. Following the directions closely, I attempted to close the tray. I NEVER applied any undue force, just pushed the "push to close" button. Nothing happened! The camera continued to "whirrrr" around inside. I pulled the tape back out and tilted to camera to look inside. When I did a small pin and gear fell out onto my countertop. Disturbing to say the least. It is going back tomorrow to Target. I will probably drive over to Best Buy to re-purchase it, along with an extended warrantee! I'll keep you all posted! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great camera- need extra storage and battery
This thing is awesome. It's smaller and lighter than my RIM Phone! Easy to throw on the charging station, grab and go. Something that never happend w/my old Video Camera. Had to grab the whole bag, overnight charge of the battery, etc... This thing charges in an hour or two.Quality of the LCD is excellent, even on the soccerfield under direct sunlight.Quality of the video, even on normal (has 2 higher settings) is good.

Downsides: only 2 I can come up with. Definitely need to buy extra memory cards. If you are going to take on vacation w/out your laptop to download the video to, then you'll probably want to buy another 2GB's.That would give you 2-3 hours of video over a week trip. Also, you'll need an extra battery. It's only good for about an hour (I run through it in a single 8yr old soccer game).Problem right now is that I can't find an extra battery to order anywhere.Accessories aren't really out yet (as of end of May). So, plan on another $300 to make it really livable. That all said, it's the coolest gadget I own. Haven't tried the helmet cam yet, but am already planning it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool
I got this to record ATV riding adventures. It was this or the new super small Sony mini dv cam. I went with this because I think the mini dv cam would not hold on the trail with all the dust.
I have had this for a few days to play with so far. I bought a 1gig scan disk card with it. It will record 63 minutes on the lowest 620x480 setting with the 1 gig card. The video quility is good on the lowest setting. I edited it with I-movie on my Mac and burnd a dvd and it looks great on the normal tv.
I could not get it to work with my windows vedio editing softwere ( Pinnacle and Screenblaster) but It does work with windows movie maker.
You may want to bump up to the super fine setting if you want HD quality. I only get 22 minutes with the 1gig card on the higest settings.
The external lens is cool. It come with a head and arm band. The extrem sports guys will love this for recording thier crazy stuff.
Overall I'm happy with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for its intented purpose
I plan to use the Samsung sc-x105l for cycling (MTB, Road and Motorcycle) trips.I've had the unit a few days and familiarized myself with the controls.Fumbling for setup and features is always a battery burner so I try to be proficient before giving a real-life judgement on battery life.

I did a road bicycle test yesterday in 56 degree weather, starting with a full charge (I had cycled the battery once prior to this), the image quality was set for 352 dpi at "normal".Two higher quality settings are available this is the lowest and most battery efficient.Electronic Image Stabilization was turned on which also uses more power. The LCD display door was closed and I used the external remote camera.

According to the manual, I should have gotten ~80 .minutes, the varible was the EIS, there is no mention of how much that lowers battery life.My actual battery life was 48 minutes.About half of what the manual stated.

Image quality at 352/normal was fair. When a car zipped past me, the image was not clear enough to read a license plate from 30 ft away during playback, even going frame by frame.Recording at higher resolution should help this but more testing required.

The good news was how much of the 512mb internal memory I had used in 48 minutes, which was only 95mb.I feel by increasing the resoltuion (which uses way more memory and some battery) an equal amount of memory and battery can be consumed yielding about 30 minutes of quality video.

30 minutes may not sound like much but frankly, 30 minutes of home moives is usually more than most people can take.I'll carry a spare battery and 1G memory stick top tranfer during longer trips.

BTW, the unit is amazingly small and light, build quality is sturdy. That is a big plus for the intended audience of this unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for Improvements
I was very excited to receive this camera. My intent was to use it for skydiving video, after all I first saw the advert for it in Parachutist magazine. Anyway, I had it for about 1 week before I sent it back. It went through batteries very quickly and captured relatively grainy and dark video and stills. It takes several seconds to ready for video or stills and if I kept it in the ready mode for too long (20 min) the battery was about gone! The lense provided a pretty narrow field of view. It is good for standard back yard applications but as an "extreme sports cam" it is not ready for the quick and constant action of up close "extreme sports". Only the external optical cam eye is water resisitant. The rest of the cam will break if exposed to heavy moisture/rain/water. Another point of contention, I early purchased this unit from Amazon for $699. By the time it was delivered the price was already down to $569.00 from Amazon! Bottom line.....Wait till it is improved and the price settles down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed
I wanted to use this product to document sports and other activities and expected that the video could show the times and dates when these activities were observed. However, although the camera has a time and date function, these items cannot be made to appear on the video.

The camcorder has a separate camera module for mounting on a helmet, etc., but the picture quality does not match that of the main camera, which makes use of the separate module inadequate for the purposes I had in mind when ordering this particular unit. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Battery life and availability is a BIG problem.
Pros - Nice and small and easy to carry. Software fairly easy to use. Middle of the road performance from an inexpensive camcorder.
Cons - The lack of a video light makes the camera performance poor in low light.Still captures are low quality.
Major Con - Battery life leaves a lot to be desired and additional batteries are very difficult to locate. This Camcorder has the smallest camcorder battery I've ever seen (SB-LSM80). I can only get between 40 minutes to an hour record time out of it, far short of what the manual claims. Then, it takes an hour and a half to fully re-charge which must be done in the camera since an external charger is not available. It also appears the battery only charges while the camera is off.I searched around and accessories are simply not available for this camera.Amazon.Com incorrectly lists the Samsung SB-L110 & Samsung SBL-220 batteries as accessories for this camcorder but the site is incorrect and the batteries are not interchangeable with the SB-LSM80 the unit uses.Neither Amazon.Com nor any of my local Samsung retailers carry extra batteries for this camcorder and a few did stock this very camcorder model.I had to order additional batteries from a Samsung Part distributor as that was the only place I could locate them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice but buy extra batteries!!!
So I got this item and the first thing I did was charged the battery. After the battery was charged, I started to play with it to get used to the functions. So I played with the item for 15-20 minutes and turned it off.The next day, I took the camera to the motocross to watch my daughter race and when I went to start filming, the battery was dead.SoI went home to charge the battery and to read the manual to see if I was missing something.Come to find out, it states in the manual that if you leave the battery connected to the camera, the camera will use the battery's energy even with it off.So if you get this camera, remove the battery from the camera when you are not using it and the battery will stay charged.I have tested this and it works but its really not something that the consumer should worry about.Other than that, the camera is easy to use, great in size and weight and fits very well even in my large hand. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Video, great 5MP stills
The SCD6550 is a great idea, but just doesn't preform as I had hoped.I was looking for one camera to take on vacation, replacing carrying a 2 year old Sony MiniDV and a 5 MP Sony CyberShot. My Sony takes 1 MP stills, has excellent video, but @ 1MP, the stills are not nearly print worthy. This camera is actually smaller and lighter than my Sony.

The 5MP still camera function gave excellent results, both with flash and with natural light and outside.Shot for shot it produced either as good or better prints (4x6) than the Sony CyberShot.

Digital video is this unit's short coming.I did identical shots inside and outside with the Sony and Samsung. The Samsung's video quality was very poor, looked more like analog or standard 8mm quality.Inside, with natural room lighting, it was pretty much unacceptable.Outside, the shots lacked the crispiness of the Sony.I took it back, will keep the Sony's and hope that Sony comes out with a greater than 2 or 3 MP model soon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of both worlds
I spent a lot of time researching the best video camera to buy and decided on the DuoCam. At first I was thinking of getting a Sony miniDV HandiCam, but after trying it out in the store I was afraid I would break it, it felt more like a Fisher Price toy than a serious (and expensive) piece of electronic equipment. I saw a review in Wired Magazine for the DuoCam and it peaked my interest, both a miniDV camera with a 4 mega pixel video camera in one package...hmmm. Well I tried one out in the store and although it is a little bigger than a HandiCam, it is much more solid and once you learn the controls is very convenient. One of the reasons I bought this was because we have a new baby, with this camera I can video tape him and when he does something particularly cute I just switch to the digital camera and take a shot, no switching or anything, pretty convenient when you have diaper in one hand and your camera in the other. I found the video quality to be the equivlent of the the HandiCam and the photo quality and features are excellent. Considering how much you would spend for both a decent miniDV camera and a good digital camera, this is a great deal. You also get a remote, USB cable and memory card. I am very happy with my purchase, way to go Samsung! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best features for the price
This camcorder offers the best features compared to similarly priced other brands (JVC and Panasonic), which include flash memory option, USB cable, and bigger video light. It is not as compact as JVC or Panasonic, but small enough to fit small bags. I have not had problems with the cassette insertion mechanism of the camera. It seems to be the best deal for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera, great features for the price
Not only did this camera exceed my expectations, but after shopping around, got it for a great price. The zoom and DIS are excellent, and the power nite pix is really cool. Pictures onto the memory stick aren't anything special, but I wasn't buying a camcorder to take pictures anyway. The size is very manageable, and hooking it up via the USB was a snap. The menus become easy to use after you get use to them, and some of the 'quick' buttons let you access functions even faster. The cassette insertion is actually pretty neat, and assuming you're not retarded, you shouldn't have a problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars I would never buy a Samsung again!!!
My husband and I purchased this Camcorder and recorded our sons birth, which worked fine for the taping, but when we played it back the camera would not rewind and when we played it on the TV there was nothing but lines through the picture. We sent the tape to Samsung who said the tape could not be recovered and the camera was "off line" and could not be fixed. The tape of our sons birth is now bascially worthless. So we returned the camcorder and purchased another one just like it. It worked for 2 months and now when you play back the tape, the picture is all encrypted and the sound is nothing but static! Samsung camcorders are junk!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Awful video quality
The video quality is terrible~ in natural daylight indoors the images are grainy, dark, and the colors are inaccurate. I was filming my kids and my daughter's bright pink ball came out orange in the film. The images were not clear at all and everything appeared darker than to the eye. I have gotten MUCH better results from my old RCA vhs recorder than this digital one. In outdoors, at 1pm, I got similar disappointing results~ the colors of the trees were not captured and again, the images were darker than in real life. Very disappointing.

I'm giving this camcorder 2 stars (rather than none) because it does have very good sound quality and it was easy to use. However, because I want decent recordings of my children, this is going back to the store today.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Camera Does NOT Have An Extra Lens!
As of May 7th '05 Amazon still has the wrong image up for this item. The separate lens shown is included only with the Samsung SCX105L MPEG4 Sports Camcorder.
I notified customer service but they haven't changed it yet. This camera is silver not matt black.I tried it out and found the video a little blurry. I would probably wait for an updated version. I have found better quality MPEG video on the little Sony T33 cybercam. I like the smaller size of flash based video cameras but you don't get much full quality video on a 512MB card. Even 1G wouldn't be enough to take on a vacation without bringing a laptop or external storage system with you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sports Camera Review
I completely disagree with the other reviewer. I think he was expecting WAY more from this camera and didnt understand its intended use.

I would reccomend this to anyone who wants to get video to use on the internet. Granted, it is not going to give you good enought quality to make a wedding video and then make DVD's of that, but that's not really what it is made for.

It works great for shooting outdoor sports such as mountain biking and skiing, etc. But the indoor use doesnt work very well.

The external lens is also great, comes with a mount to put it on a bike helmet, and another one to put on your arm for snow boarding and such...

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Video Quality, Ergonomics
Received my camera yesterday - returning it today. This is the first digital camcorder I've owned, my previous one being VHS-C. I've digitized all my old VHS tapes, burned them to DVD, and the quality is ok.

The MPEG4 quality of this camera is below that, and I was expecting better. Even on the highest quality setting, video quailty is still poor. It also has problems obtaining and maintaining focus when the subjects are moving around.

Another problem is ergonomics. It's way to easy to get your finger in front of the lens. The zoom switch seems to be located conveniently, but when you press it you inevitably have to stretch and the camera moves around on you. I guess that is a price you pay for such a small camera.

I also could not get it to work with one of my computers to transfer the files over USB. It did work with two others however.

With the internal 512MB, you get about 12 minutes of highest quality video (if you can call it that). You will want memory sticks to expand your recording capability. They're not cheap, but unlike tapes you will re-use them after you dump the files.

The manual says the battery should last 60 minutes at a minimum. I only charged it once, and it drained in less than half that. Of course by then, I had filled up the internal memory anyway. I looked for spare batteries, but they don't seem to be available yet.

Another gotcha it will not work with memory sticks over 1GB. I didn't find out about this until I read the manual. The manual says it "may" not work which I take to mean don't call us about it. I had ordered a 2GB memory stick, and now it's going back too.

I'm going to wait for the 3CCD JVC Everio.

Amazon.com Product Description

Optics
The SCD27 features a high-performance 1/6" 680,000 Pixel CCD to capture high-quality video and digital photos. It's also fitted with a 10X optical zoom and a 800X digital zoom lens. Digital zoom is a powerful tool, but it can lead to "jaggies"--zigzag contours that reduce picture quality. Samsung has applied a Digital Image Stabilizer to correct this problem.

Digital Stills and MPEG Video
The scd27 can capture videos in MPEG4 format at a resolution of QVGA 10fps. In addition to high-quality video, the SCD23 also captures digital still photos that are stored on a memory card as JPEGs in your choice of three image qualities.

Inputs and Outputs
The SCD27 comes anIEEE1394 in / out, USB port, and Analog Input.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV is the preferred format for personal and broadcast-quality video, highly regarded for its high audio and image quality. With up to 540 lines of horizontal resolution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 20-percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of 2 full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD.

What's included
Camcorder, AC Adapter/ Charger, Battery Pack, and Hand Grip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Camera great features LOVE THE COLOR SCREEN
I bought this camera by all the reviews I read and it seemded like a great buy. I am very happy with it but the extra expense of firewire and capture hardware was $65. Thought I'd be able to upload via USB. Only still pictures upload with the USB> Movies go vai Firewire. It was easy to install and very easy to upload and then you are watching it on your computer and not a TV. Other than the additional purchase of the capture card which I guess all digital camcorders require it is a wonderful unit and fits well in your hand!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice footage, poor PC compatibility & service
I received this camcorder as a gift, and although the footage I've shot has been good quality, I cannot download it on to my PC. I have a brand new PC and it appears the driver that came with the camcorder is not compatible with XP Media Center. I've attempted to contact Samsung to confirm these allegations but they will not return my calls or emails. So I've got hours of raw Mini DV footage that I can't edit on my computer. What's the point??? Needless to say, I'll be buying a new Mini DV camcorder soon, and it will not be Samsung. So far Panasonic has my vote.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great all around budget DV cam
This camera is excellent on those who are on budget and film mostly outside. Why do I say mostly outside? Because the video quality under low indoor light conditions is horrible. Incredibly grainy on shadowy indoor areas. You'll need tons of light indoor to eliminate the grainyness. Whats even worse is that even in medium indoor lighting conditions look grainy. This is because this camera has low Aperture (1.4) and that is the ability for the lens to pick up light. Camcorders with 1.6 and up look much better and they are more expensive.. go figure why. A good tip to follow is NOT to use DV TDK tapes in this camera as they almost always malfunction. The sound quality is nice and stereo, the picture quality outside is superb, and the features the camcorder has are great especially A/V/s-video IN to capture from other source. Night vision is cool, although short distance. I wouldn't rely on still pix they are low rez. The LCD is nice although the DPI is low. Another great thing is that it works with my Power MAC and there is microphone input although I 'm not sure if it is stereo or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samsung scd27 brings home amateur broadcast quality
Believe me guys, I'm an Information Technology man with a subtle devotion to data mining. Indeed before purchasing this electronic jewel, I sifted through thousands of websites for technical details about digital cameras, and after 2 weeks, I finally chose Samsung scd27.

It works perfect and has a number of captivating features that cocky brandnames like Sony or Jvc would sell for 600$ and up.

The imaging gadget(ccd) incorporated in Samsung scd27 helps you capture rich color pictures that play on a regular tv monitor with a pleasant flamboyant attitude. Don't worry about the sound quality: it is the same you have when listening to your music CD.
The LCD screen on the side is gigantic for a miniDv:3.5". Picture that!

And since mine was shipped with a vast array of accessories: USB cable, analog AV cable, S-cable, remote control, shoulder trap, lens ring, I am doubly happy because, besides getting back my money worth, a cutting edge technology has found home right in the palm of my hand. What a sweet deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for the money!
I got this camcorder for a Christmas present. I have to say its a very good camcorder. It has sharp video, built in light, and night vision. The audio is very crisp, and is good for storing memories. You can take snapshots and record them to video, with sound. You can put in a memory stick and take stills, then transfer them to your computer via firewire, or USB. The battery charges in about 2 hours which is very fast. The only downtime is that it would be cool to have a 20 X optical zoom, but 10 X is powerful enough. I would recomend this camcorder to anyone. You can't beat this amazon price! I hope to keep this for years to come!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful camera
The camera was great in every way, great picture, long lasting battery, light weight, easy to use, overall wonderful camera. I was just disappointed that the remote wasn't included.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the light?!?
Ok, i said to myself no light on the camera....so I'll just go out and buy one. This is my 1st camcorder purchase ever so of course i didnt realize that in order to attach a light to this puppy it needs an accessory shoe. Light is this little cam's best friend , because in low light situations...u might as well be filming behind a screen door.....because that is what the grainy imprint over all of my indoor footage looks like....well go out and buy 1 for yourself........enjoy!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Picture, description are misleading and wrong!!!
Description and picture misrepresent SC-D303 (I think it's for model SC-D305/307 which isn't sold yet).
SC-D303DOES NOT have accessory shoe NOR video light.
"Standard light" is not a part of package.
There's no remote either.
It's a good camera, but not what's being described here in editorial or on most sites including Samsung which shows wrong picture too!!!
My purchase is going back!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons of the Samsung sc-d303
I was looking for a decent review of this camera but could not find one anywhere online. As soon as it was available for sale, I ordered and crossed my fingers. It arrived today and I've been testing it out to the max so here it is for those who want a timely review.

Keep in mind that I'm the type of person who only looks at poor reviews to see why I shouldn't buy a camera...because a lot of things can be either great or acceptable but all it takes is one flaw to make a purchase a remorseful one.

Cons:

-No Memory Stick included! I assumed one was included but in the instructions booklet it says "Optional accessories". I had to run out and buy one for $40.

-No remote Control! Again the booklet says included...bbut only for the 305/307.

-Mpeg4 only allows for 20 second clips.

-The record button is very poorly placed. It is a thin standing rectangle too close to the battery so you need a tiny finger to reach it. It is very hard to press.

-No Tally light. Not even one you can turn off.

-20x Zoom is slow. It takes a while to go from one end to the other.

Pros:

-Battery life is really good. I've been recording, rewinding through several tapes, playing all night and the battery indicator is still at 95% .

-Power Nite Pix is way cool. I feel like I'm in the Army in Paris.

-Most intuitive menu I've ever used.

Here is the MPEG4 review:

There are 2 modes, 320x240 and 160x120. You have a 20 second limit per clip and the final size is 1800 Kb in either mode. I was hoping a smaller file size with the smaller resolution but no...they just give you more frames per second. The larger resolution has only about 10 frames per second and so it is choppy. It's good for emailing back home.

I used their Samsung streaming software to record old footage from mini-dv to mpeg4 on my computer. The setup was simple and here it is always 320x240 and you can record clips as long as you want (hard disk space limited)

Overall I strongly recommend this camera. It is very small...full of features...and way cheap. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

While not known for making camcorders, Samsung has released a highly capable model in the SCD67. The digital model has a potent 22x optical zoom paired with a digital image stabilization system. Toss in a 2.5-inch LCD and assorted other features, and you have a winner.

The 22x optical zoom of the SCD67 is much more than adequate--many cameras top out at 10x--and enables the videographer to shoot footage from just about any vantage point. The lens is paired with digital image stabilization. This technology essentially reduces the amount of information used by the image sensor, effectively creating a buffer zone that removes the minimal shaking that is associated with high zoom levels.

Aside from the 2.5-inch LCD, the SCD67 also includes intelligent backlight compensation, which means the camcorder will adjust if you're shooting subjects with a light source shining behind them. It's not a cure-all--it's never a good idea to shoot into the sun--but it'll help when filming stage performances and similar situations. The kit contains a lithium-ion battery, AC adapter-charger, AV cable, and instructions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great two-in-one camera
I actually originally purchased a JVC digital camcorder. I should have listened to the other Amazon reviewers and steered clear of that one, as within an hour of use, it stated that it needed head cleaning, and wouldn't operate.
This Samsung camcorder replaced that one the day after I purchased the JVC, and I am very pleased. The picture and sound quality are great, and it is very easy to download the video to my iMac via firewire. I'm not sure how well (or if) it would work on a PC, so you may want to investigate whether it will work with your system.
About the only thing that keeps this camera from getting 5 stars is I have had difficulty trying to retrieve still photos when the camera is connected to the computer- but then I haven't fully read the manual, so it could be very simple.
Basically this is a great camera, and it's not much more expensive than a high-quality digital still camera. If you enjoy having multiple-use products as much as I do, this is a great bet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for the price
The Camcorder has all Basic and important features that a digital camera should have. Its easy to transfer video to PC and play video on TV. The Camcorder has everything I need to get started on making digital home movies. I also bought a light attachment from samsung accesory store for low light indoor shooting. The date does reset to Jan 1, but thats a minor hitch.

The video quality is very good. Optical zoom is good too, haven't used digital zoom yet. I don't think i'll need it, 22x is sufficient.

I would say its a great basic digital camera to get started with. So if you are ok with limited but all important digital features definitly go for this camera. Its easy to operate.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADDENDUM TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW
I have to say my Samsung SCD-67 Mini DV camcorder DOES WORK WITH FIREWIRE AND MAC. I've been editing my tapes on Mac from day one and haven't had a problem. "Blue Dalmation" iMac 500mhz/20Gig HD, OS 9.1 & iMovie 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lowest Priced Mini DV Camcorder Ain't Half Bad!
I produced a local cable access TV show and was looking for the lowest priced Mini-DV camcorder possible. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a Canon GL-1 from the TV station but I wanted my own camera. So, I looked and looked and finally found the best quality camera, with the best features at the best price (sub $300) right here on Amazon! It's been a year since I bought it and I STILL haven't fully utilized all it's capabilities. Partially because I can edit tape on my firewire equipped Mac w/iMovie 2 and thus don't need any of the in-camera editing features. The other reason I haven't used all the SCD-67's features is because it's SO CONVENIENT to simply point and shoot and ALWAYS record pretty decent images. My images will get even better once I start using the camera's features! It's not a sophisticated 3 ccd camera, but it's easy to use, you can grow with it, it's very reliable if you don't abuse it, and unlike some much more expensive cameras, the tape eject opens from the top THE WAY IT SHOULD! Oh, and what other camcorder offers a 22X OPTICAL ZOOM??? I drool over the GL-2, XL-1s and the others, but my Samsung SCD-67 is gonna be with me for a long time, I'm happy to say. The MAJOR drawback is the lack of a headphone jack, which means your audio quality will remain a question mark until you get back to the editing bay. One way around that is an add on Beachtech adaptor or the use of an audio mixer which has a headphone jack. Great little cam!

1-0 out of 5 stars do not buy this camera
this camera is not compatible with a mac. it says it is on their website and in their owner's manual, but once it is at home, it won't work. i have contacted samsung three times, and have had little or no help. a manager was supposed to call me back (this after I had sent the camera off to be worked on) but i still have not heard from anyone. and that's been over two months. i am tired of trying. this camera is ok at filming, but does not work when trying to edit on a mac. save your money and buy another brand!! ... Amazon.com Product Description

The uniquely designed SCD590 sits snugly in your hand for great convenience and comfort while shooting. Among its many features are a large 2.5-inch LCD screen that can be viewed in both dark and bright environments, a shoe for external accessories, a remote control, nine digital effects, and a color onscreen display with easy-to-use dial navigation controls.

Lens
The optical zoom magnifies up to 10 times, while the digital zoom, which works by electronically enhancing the optical image, reaches up to 400 times. The zoom toggle is pressure sensitive, so you can control the speed of your zooms. The electronic image stabilization keeps the picture steady throughout the natural shakes and jitters during usage.

Switch to Nite Pix mode, which works by emitting infrared light, for shooting in total darkness. Choose from nine digital special effects, such as art, mosaic, sepia, black and white, and cinema, to add style to your videos.

Digital Stills
Digital photos are stored on the included 8 MB Memory Stick in JPEG format. The SCD590 has a USB connection for easy PC import. You can use the included software, MGI PhotoSuite III, to edit your digital stills.

Inputs and Outputs
The standard DV IEEE1394 port (also called FireWire) is present for a no-loss connection to a PC or other DV machines, as well as a USB port. S-video and RCA A/V connections are used for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing. You can also plug in an external microphone via the mic jack for better sound.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution--far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You'll get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture. You'll also get excellent sound quality in either 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

  • 16-bit audio includes one set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound.
  • 12-bit audio uses two sets of audio tracks, so you can easily add background music or commentary to your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12 the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of two full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best investment I ever made!
I purchased this camera in Singapore last May and I paid $1100. I compaired this camera to literally hundreds. If you have ever been to Singapore you would know its the electronics super center of SE Asia. This camera didnt simply out perform other models like JVC, Sony and Canon. It destroyed the competition. Night vision on this camera is fantastic compared to the long list of others I tried. This model is user friendly with easy to follow directions. The Samsung website has fabulous tutorials of how to work this camera too. This is selling for a way lower price than I paid. Its a steal at this price. Get the camera and you will know what I mean by performance. The guy that wrote the 2 star review.. he must be writing about a Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT camera, ignore fake negative reviews
This product is great. It's a DIGITAL video camcorder and is just so smartly designed (controls on the back within easy reach, remote control can snap onto/into the camera, etc), for the price of a poor analog camera with less features. Everyone I've talked about the camera is nothing less than enthusiastic about the quality and value for the money. It even has an effect (unfortunately called Make-Up mode) that will only highlight one color (like in "Schindler's List", as CNET noted).

I do have to say that I'm very creeped out by the "Ray Chan" negative review here, in which he copied negative reviews from the CNET boards, and then pasted them (all put together) as his own negative review here on the Amazon site. On CNET, he's known as the "Sony freak", because he goes to all the Samsung products and gives them bad reviews in really bad English, while pushing Sony products. He's managed to bypass the bad English here on Amazon by taking other people's reviews as his own. You can see the negative reviews he copied at: http://reviews.cnet.com/Samsung_SC_D590/4852-6500_7-9879939.html?tag=box

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camcorder!
I first purchased a Sony IP5 and was very disappointed. I hesitated to purchase the SCD590 due to some negative reviews... but I also felt that the reviews may have been staged. Anyway... I bought the camcorder... and we love it. QUALITY is GREAT... and that means picture, features, ease of use, and mechanical. We've had our SCD590 for about 3 months.

5-0 out of 5 stars i could not find any bad things on this cam
i got this cam about a week ago. so far so i am happy with this cam. actually, i did not expected this size, b/c i though much bigger, and even smaller than my hand. what is diferent b/t sonyand samsung. it looks same to me thru looking t,v.. and i do not know about the com, b/c it is going to be different story to how you capture thru com, (italk about pic quality)
ps i think there is different b/t sony or other japaness cam and samsung that is price, samsung is much much cheaper and i think same quality.

2-0 out of 5 stars Neat features, bad quality control..It's a Crazy Cam!!
Pros: Thoughtful control layout; intuitive user interface; nifty Make-up mode; still image capture to Memory Stick; sharp LCD; optional VL-S1FL unit functions as both a video light and a flash.

Cons: Questionable quality control; bottom-loading cassette; no built-in flash for shooting stills.

Summary: I was sold on this camera for its size. I have tested the quality of the images against my larger Sony TRV-310. While the unit produced acceptable results I was disappointed in the color fidelity. Contrast to my Sony, the Samsung displayed muted colors lacking the depth and sharpness I have taken for granted. I must admit that the features are very good, but the image quality is not very good. Dim light shooting is not the best for this camcorder, unless you want to use night pix (greenish infrared light) The quality control is BAAAD, there were many things wrong with my camcorder when I got it, I had to send it back to the store for a refund. Price is great, but I'm now concerned about the Samsung company, continously failing over and over. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best small travel camera
Other than a lack of a few manual overrides for things like shutter speed and logical film speed, the only other negative things I have to say are:

1) It forces too rigid controls on you for some of the more common things. Such as, take a photo and decide you don't want to keep it - to delete it you must first switch out of record mode and into play mode, access the menu, navigate to the memory option, locate the photo you just took and delete it. Then, to take another picture, you must switch back over to record mode (switching modes takes about .1 seconds to flip a switch, but for some reason the camera wants an addition 5 seconds to run a self-test or something before you can use that mode).

2) The LCD screen is not the greatest I've seen. Not bad, but just barely "good" quality. Playback of video or stills can sometimes result in noise, looking like mosaic squares or the occassional line. However, this is only on the LCD screen of the camera - videos and stills sent to a PC monitor, TV screen or printer (as appropriate) are all excellent quality.

I tried to replicate the problems quoted here in a previous review. I could not. I surmise the problems must have been due to either viewing on the LCD screen (already noted as being just barely "good") or due to bad recording media.

Specifically, I ran a panoramic recording of 2 rooms. Both were intentially lit in one corner but not the others. Both had large areas of white and dark patches, shadows under shelves and cabinets, objects up close and far away. I ran several pans of each room at different panning speeds. The ultimate speed was 1 revolution in 3 seconds - things moved by FAST!

The camera performed excellently with respect to exposure, rapidly changing with lighting conditions. Both rooms included the lighting source in part of the pans (i.e., I filmed the light bulb as it was burning). No problems. I could even read titles on books in the shadows of my bookshelves. I noted a slightly better result by using the "sports" setting rather than the automatic exposure, but the AE was still very good.

Of course, focus was a problem on the last, fast pan. 360 degrees in 3 seconds is too fast for any camera to keep up with. At more reasonable panning speeds, the camera focused absolutely A-OK.

As to a verical streak being recorded on zoom, the zoom is purely optical. The digital zoom value (up to 800x) must be set before recording starts and cannot be changed during recording. Any zooming during recording is optical, therefore, any vertical streak is probably the result of either (a) bad recording media or (b) the playback was on the LCD, not a PC monitor or TV screen. In short, the streak was either "real" and on bad media, or a "ghost" existing on the LCD but not truly recorded on tape.

For photos, color content is wonderful, if and only if the proper lighting is chosen. If you're indoors, choose indoors. Otherwise you will likely get a bit of blue or orange cast. Any PC software can adjust this, but using the correct setting is preferable. 4.3mp using superfine detail yields exceptional quality. Compared to a Canon G3's best photo, the DuoCam is noticably better.

The camera is complex. Not complicated, but complex. People who don't read manuals should not buy this camera.

For one camera to own and use, or if you need a travel camera on vacation or something, this is the one. Sure beats carrying a camcorder AND a still camera, and all in the size of a small to medium camcorder. It's not professional quality (then again, it's not $12,000 either), but it's getting close. Record video on tape or mediastick. "Snap" low-res stills to tape while in camcorder mode. Copy stills or individual frames from tape to memorystick. Continuous stills at 3/second. Lots more. Great quality, tons of features.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Indoor Video Recording Quality
The video quality indoors is absolutely horrible, even with the night shot features, and every possible combination of settings, etc. I tried really hard to find reasons to keep this camera. But in the end, the video quality was too horrible to justify it as a $... digital still camera.

Outdoors, the video was OK producing ever so slightly washed out colors, but here is the real problem. Moving between light and moderately dark areas of a small room produced horrible video. During playback you either got something that looked like pure night or the sun all in one room. The video recorder does not gracefully adjust between light and moderately light areas of a room. Occasionally when using the zoom, a pure white line would be recorded vertically as part of the video!!!!!

Now for the camera. One thing that annoyed me after a few minutes was the constant manual flipping of half of the device between still and video. I did a comparison between the Samsung still digital camera and my Sony 3.34 MP camera that I already owned. Disappointment again. Horrible color from Samsung (washed out colors). I was not impressed with the quality after comparing about 10 different pictures of varying light, indoors, outdoors, etc. Hands down the Sony 3.34 MB won.

I returned the Samsung camera and bought instead the Sony TRV70 for about the same price (I would like to have tried the TRV80 but $... more was just not in the cards for an 1" more LCD). What a difference. When it comes to color and light (indoors especially), Sony seems to have those two figured out. Awesome video recording indoors with the Sony. All around the video was so much better with the Sony. The still are not as good as my Sony 3.34 but if you can live with reduced picture size, the quality is pretty good (plus no manual flipping of half the device). I'll still probably take both the video and the camera on the next trip (pending cooperation from the wife). Really, if you ignore such frills as Bluetooth and Internet connectivity from within your camcorder (!!!), you can probably buy something much cheaper than the TRV70.

One day, we'll all carry one device that produces high quality video and stills. But for now, that day is not here yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Camcorder!
I bought this camera as soon as we found out my wife was pregnant. We got it @ Target and have loved it. Especially for the price. The zoom is good -- 22x optical. I am not sure what the other reviewer is talking about with the cheap buttons-- the whole thing feels real high quality. I dropped it on cement once and it didn't do anything except scratch it. My wife likes the effects (negative, sepia, mirror, etc.) We have had the camera for 18 months and have had no problems with it at all. The battery actually lasts along time even when I use the flip out lcd screen. However with the spotlight on it does drain it about twice as fast. If you need a good reliable camera but don't want to plunk down big dollars, this is a great choice. My only complaint is the fade in/out button is under the flip out lcd screen, so if you want to fade you have to open the flip, a small annoyance. But all in all a great camera that has worked flawlessly since I bought it.

4-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for!
There I was, ready to open a box filled with goodies- including a new camcorder. I opened the box and was excited to find the thing worked, okay. Soon, though, the fun died when I charged it, "Wow," says I, "This charges quickly!" After video taping a few different things I realized, "Hey, it doesn't even last a half an hour, fully charged!" Don't get me wrong, it has a terrific zoom, 22X optical, and it has some decsent digital effects. The sound quality is high and good, and the LCD displays a clear picture. Not bad, but it could be improved...

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Camera Ever!!!!
I have used my camcorder about 5 times, on my 7 month old's 1st trip to Disneyland I went to change the tape at the end of recording, and put a new tape in. After changing the tape, the camera would no longer play nor record. Of course I was just out of the 1 year limited warranty, and now it will cost almost as much to fix the camera as it would to buy a whole new one. It has never been dropped, nor mistreated. It just stopped recording or playing for no reason at all. What a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars the camera eficiently
this camera works very well iv dark rooms. when you are whit your gril friend in a dark room , you and she no anybody, this camcorder help you to capture your life best time! be carefull!

4-0 out of 5 stars I had a deception
I buy a Samsung SCL-860 and I hoped to can use on a PAL VCR, but when I try to record on my VCR with PAL60 features I had a real deception because my recording is black and white. What can I do now?

5-0 out of 5 stars great camcorder
I have had this camcorder for about a year. I have not had any trouble with it. I take it to the drag races with me. With the great zoom I can record the cars all the way to the end of the quarter mile track. The battery life is great. It recharges quickly. This is a great camcorder at a great price. It's really easy to operate. I would recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars good item
I think this is a great camcorder for someone on a tight budget, but I don't like the fact that there is no cartridge to play the Hi-8 tape in the vcr there is a cord you hook your camcorder to the vcr with and use the camcorder almost as a vcr to play the tapes and you hae to record the Hi-8 on to a vhs from your vcr in order to not have to use your camcorder. The only good part about that is that you can use the Hi-8 tape as many times as you need to and then jsut record it on to a vhs and reuse the Hi-8 tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Qns
Do you know how to reposition the tape after record and subsequent playback? I did it manually but there is a gap (or noise) in between two vedio recordings. I know sony has 'end search' function which reposition the head to end of last recording so that the next vedio doesn't show any gap from. Can you do that in SCL 8600? Other than this function I found this product very nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First time user camcorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does Everything
This camera does everything it says it does. The photo quality is a little low, but seeing as though its a camcorder that's acceptable. The video quality and the zoom are awesome. Even playing back on the flip-out screen the video is crisp and the sound is very sharp. My only complaint is the manual. It reads as though it were written in Japanese and then translated by an automated service. The camera, however, is fairly self-explanatory to anyone with a little experience with a computer. I have been extremely pleased with its performance. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

In recent years Samsung has gained a reputation for developing great technology at lower prices, which the SCD86 will only enhance. Among its many features are a large 2.5-inch LCD screen, shoe for external accessories, remote control, nine digital special effects, and a color onscreen display with an easy-to-use dial navigation controls.

Lens
The SCD86 has an optical zoom power of 10x and a digital zoom that can magnify up to 400x, which works by electronically enhancing the optical image. It also has a four-step variable zooming speed that controls the zoom according to the amount of pressure you apply to the toggle. The digital image stabilization system keeps the picture steady and solid throughout zooms and camera shakes. The infrared function allows you to shoot visible video in situations with practically no light.

Digital Stills
You can store your digital stills directly onto tape or onto the included 8 MB Memory Stick in JPEG format. MGI PhotoSuite III, photo-editing software compatible with all Windows operating systems, and a USB cable are included with the camcorder.

Inputs and Outputs
The standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also called FireWire) is present for no-loss connections to PCs or other DV machines. Transfer your digital stills onto your computer with the USB port, while the S-video and RCA connections are used for direct viewing on a television or for VHS dubbing. You can also plug in an external microphone via the mic jack for better quality sound.

  • 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary to your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that's 1/12 the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of two full hours--20 times the capacity of a CD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a point and shoot
We bought the camera as a return from a major department store that had taken it back from someone who had bought it one day and returned it the next. Most of the attachments were still in their bags. We got a price of $300 because it is a closeout and it was returned.

The first thing I noticed is that you can't even charge the battery without reading the manual. While that isn't a big problem for some, I am sure that it would be frustrating for people who want to pick it up and play with it. I am a little concerned that the dc (power)attachment and the pc (computer)plugs are approximately the same dimensions and are both rectangular. They are not particularly near each other but with someone who doesn't read instructions and is prone to forcing things, something could get damaged.

You get an 8MB memory stick (upgradeable to over 128Mb) for still photos and very short videos but you need to buy tapes. Then you need to be sure that you select the correct recording media on the side of the camera.

The camera portion is 1MB resolution; hardly high quality clarity for a digital camera these days but the video will operate in almost dark conditions. You can send the signal from the camera to a VCR, a TV, or a Computer, so it is extremely flexible.

Overall, if you are looking for a vacation camera that does videos and will take snapshots, this is a good choice. However, you need to read the manual. There are 17 buttons and switches on the outside of the camera alone, so you can't just point and shoot out of the box.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool camcorder. Lot of features for the price.
The best thing I liked about this camera is price per feature. I got this camera few days back and have tried all the features in the manual. I am very satisfied with pretty much all the features. The still digital camera mode is ok. The quality is ok for pc application, but just ok for printing. I did not, however expect a lot for this price.
It has everything nite pics, dig effects, back light comp, stab comp, memory stick and a lot more. I am happy with it at this moment. This is my first samsung product so reliability and cust support is yet to be seen. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars SamDUNG SCD80- it sucks!
Just days after buying it, it started shredding up tapes, poor video quality, poor customer support, and when it doesn't eat the tape up, it can't even play it back properly without having serious playback problems. I have talked to others about this cam-- same thing. SamDUNG.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go with a Japanese brand
Even though Samsung licenses the technology from Japanese vendors, they suffer 1) poor quality control, and 2) terrible ergonomic design decisions, and 3) extremely bad customer support -- don't expect to find anyone if you need support such as warranty fulfillment. A much higher-quality JVC or Sharp doesn't cost much more, and gives you years of trusty service. The image quality on this model is pretty poor, prompting a Korean reviewer to call it worse than many 8mm camcorders. I can't comment on audio, but I'd be really really surprised if a Samsung can have better audio than a Panasonic, which Digital Video magazine gave a very positive review of.

So go with the best and get a reliable Japanese brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cam for the price
After looking at a ton of cameras I stumbeled onto this one. But I couldn't find too many reviews but the ones I did find only praised it, so I went out on a limb and bought this bad boy. And I'm glad I did. For the price this cam cannot be beat. The picture quality is excellent, not broadcast mind you but hey, it wasn't 3 grand. The zoom and auto focus work really well and so does the night vision. You can see in total darkness. The sound also picks up great because the mic points toward the front not the sky like many other cameras. A cool thing about this camera is that there is no red light when you are recording so you can get real candid shots. The battery lasts for a long time, one charge will last me a week when I film skiing everyday. And the charge only takes about 30 min. The tape load is on the bottom so it cannot be accesed while mounted on a tripod, but it's not a big deal. One thing I've noticed is that when filming in the cold you have to let it record for a few extra seconds or else what you were trying to get will be cut short. Other than that I haven noticed any problems. BTW it does not come with a firewire cord, or the lens attachment that appears in so many pictures of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the price, if your like me
Lets face it, we dont all have the dollars to throw on just any expensive camcorder...so if you want something affordable, you dont want it to be cheap. In other words, you dont want to sacrafice the price for the quality. This model has done the opposite, and made me happy to spend what little money it cost, and has had terrific results. I dont want to go into the detail like the guy before me did, but I will say that he was right about all that he said. Its really a worthwhile buy, and you cant go wrong with a great company like samsung.

4-0 out of 5 stars A more in-depth review than the rest
Since no one here wrote a thorough review of the SCD80, and since I've been a long time Amazon customer, I feel it's time to give back.

Overall, this is a terrific camera for amateurs/novices especially. It has a LOT of nifty features for something this cheap. I won't reevaluate the basic technical features, such as the zoom aspects, as it was already covered in the Amazon Editorial review.

To start off the review, I'd like to mention what I think to be the most important aspect of any camcorder - video quality. I noticed indoor shooting, in low light situations, the quality can indeed be grainy. It's worthy to point out that I've read reviews of other MiniDV cam's in the $300-500 range and people complain about the same thing, so it's simply how much lux your camera has (the more, the better, the better, the more expensive :) ). If you have lighting set up, you can remedy this depending on how much lighting is provided.
Outdoor quality, on the other hand, I must say I am very impressed, especially in comparison to the indoor shooting. I didn't have backlighting problems (when the sun or backlight is so intense and over glaring that your subject becomes dark). In fact, the quality was held intact, AND there is a backlight button if you ever encounter that. Though, as my teacher explained to me, it's best to use WarmCards and exposure settings :)...up to you which works best.

The second most important aspect to me, Audio quality, in my opinion, is AWESOME. The Panasonic PVDV52 MiniDV camcorder, in comparison, one reviewer on amazon says:

"The built-in microphone has very poor sound quality - voices sound very tinny. I wish it had a way of connecting an external microphone."

Hahaha. You won't have this problem w/ the SCD80. As long as your subject is aimed at the front of the camera, you'll pick up voices perfectly. Whatever I shot and recorded, I picked up all the sounds I wanted and needed. In fact, depending on your location, it's so powerful it can pick up the sound of an airliner in the sky. You can use the "WindCut" feature on the camera to suit your needs. Also what's great here is that THERE IS a built-in mic jack w/ the SCD80!!! Not only is the sound quality great as is, but there's the said "WindCut" feature, as well as a mic jack. Though, unfortunately, and this is only through one test, it didn't pick up sound well enough to be considered "good" quality. I guess it simply depends on the mic you use, and the placement of it.

Other things..The LCD screen is adequate, and is the only viewfinder of the two I use. The other viewfinder being the "peekhole," which is in black & white, smaller resolution, and harder to film through. The camera is light, not heavy and clunky. As with most, if not all MiniDV digital camcorders, it has an iLink, or IEEE 394, connection (cable or PCI card not included). Don't have the cable or the PCI card slot, so I have yet to test a transfer to my PC myself.

To break it down..
PROS:
* Audio & Video quality
* size and weight
* connectivity (S-vid, A/V, external mic jacks)
* Additional features (remote control, Audio dubbing, night shooting, Lithium Ion rechargeable battery, AC Adapter in-box).

CONS:
* Low light/indoor shooting = grainy
* External mic jack isn't that terrific (like I said, it could be better depending on a better mic and/or placement of the mic)
* Very minor, only for college students working on projects or for amateur film makers. As with all consumer/prosumer MiniDV cam's, once the power supply is interrupted, or tape is removed, your timer for the next recorded shot will be set back to zero. Once again, if you're shooting a project for school for instance, it will be a bit harder to edit on the computer.
* This is the same w/ the past CON. Again, when power supply and/or tape is interfered w/, and you want to shoot on the same tape after a previous scene/shot, it is VERY HARD TO BACKTRACK AND EDIT! You'll have to find a good spot to backtrack to, and most likely you will have recorded over a few PRECIOUS, PRECIOUS milliseconds of the previous shot. I believe this applies to all or most consumer/prosumer MiniDV camcorders.

To sum it up, some companies may throw in features just so you'll buy their product over a competitor's that doesn't have that feature. However, in this case all of the said features work incredibly. In a similar example, the Panasonic PVDV52 again, and one particular Sony model, a Digital 8 camcorder I believe, has a rechargeable battery with it. But it dies very quickly and those that purchased it were FORCED to buy a new battery, at a VERY high cost. So, w/ the Samsung SCD80, you don't have to worry about that, for example.

I recommend this camera to amateur film makers and students alike (both like myself, heh), as well as for the average person who records precious moments in life (like birthdays, special events, etc.). Even w/ the few minor hiccups (see the CONS section), the audio and video quality outweigh those hiccups alone...not to mention the cool extras you get with it!

Remember to use lighting, and enjoy filming!
I hope this was more helpful than the other "reviews" here. ... Read more
