Amazon.com Product Description

Keep shooting picture after picture without worry of losing battery power with the Casio Exilim EX-Z40, which features a new imaging processor that saves on power and increases battery life. The 4-megapixel EX-Z40 also features a docking cradle for image transfer and battery charging, a quick start-up time of 1.6 seconds, an approximate 0.01-second release time lag, a 3x optical zoom, 2-inch LCD screen, 9.7 MB internal memory (compatibility with SD and MMC memory cards), and a movie mode with audio.

Optics and Resolution
The Exilim EX-Z40 has a 1/2.5-inch square pixel primary color CCD that captures up to 4 megapixels of detail (2304 x 1728). It also offers the following resolution modes: 2304 X 1536 (3:2), 1600 X 1200 (2MP), 1280 X 960 (1MP) 640 X 480 (VGA). The lens uses a three-segment telescoping mechanism that makes it possible to provide 3x optical zoom capabilities in an amazingly thin camera configuration. The Pentax aspherical lens (6 lenses in 5 groups) has a focal range of 5.8-17.4mm (equifalent to 35-105mm in 35mm photography).

Video and Audio
A multimedia multitasker, the Exilim EX-Z40 operates as a digital voice recorder in addition to capturing video with audio. The camera's movie mode records video in AVI (motion JPEG) format at 320 x 240 pixels and 15 frames per second (fps). The internal 9.7 MB memory can hold approximately 30 seconds of video or 40 minutes of audio recordings.

More Features
The Exilim EX-Z40 incorporates the Casio Exilim Engine, a newly developed compact image processing module with a 3-layer stack LSI that achieves high picture quality and speedy response using a 1.8V low-power system and makes the camera's compact dimensions possible. This camera has a battery life 2.5 times longer than the previous model (the EX-Z4), allowing up to 360 photos to be taken on a single charge.

Other features include:

  • 2.0-inch digital interface TFT color LCD, 84,960 pixels (354 x 240)
  • Best Shot mode provides sample images, allowing you to choose the photos you want
  • 7-point multi-auto focus for automatic selection of the optimum focus point location
  • Built-in flash with auto, flash on, flash off, and red-eye reduction modes (approximate range - 0.5 to 3.4 meters)
  • Calendar function shows thumbnail images of photos on the day they were taken; World Time function lets you select one of 162 cities in 32 time zones as your home or destination time

Direct Printing
The Exilim EX-Z40 offers PictBridge functionality, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to a compatible printer without a PC or image-editing software. Images can be viewed and selected for printing right on the camera's LCD, with menus for print quantity, date, and index print.

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored in the built-in 9.7 MB memory, or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. The internal memory can store approximately 4 Fine and 6 Standard 4-megapixel images. A docking cradle is included with the Exilim EX-Z40, which charges the battery and transfers images to PCs and Macs via USB 1.1 connectivity.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included), which provides power for approximately 360 snapshots or approximately 5 hours of voice recording. It measures 3.43 x 2.24 x .91 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 4.27 ounces (excluding battery and accessories).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great styling, okay picture quality
The Exilim EX-Z40 is a small wonder to look at and hold ... and to actually use. It's arguably the best-looking digital camera on the market today. One look at it and you'll want to buy one. The matching cradle is also just as "cute."

Picture-quality-wise, it's good, but not as good as Canon's offerings. There's a certain softness to the pictures it takes, and you cannot adjust the sharpness level like you can on many (admittedly larger) cameras. The 2" LCD is just totally wonderful, but does put on some drain on the dimunitive battery.

All in all, a pretty good package if a bit expensive. It's definitely something you can impress a lot of people with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love My Casio!
I love my Casio. This is the second digital camera that I have owned, my first being a Sony Mavica. The size on this camera makes it so convenient to bring anywhere. It is very easy to use, especially with the accompanying camera dock to upload your pictures to the computer. Battery lasts forever. I can't find a bad thing to say about the Casio Exilim.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Camara!
If your looking for a good, pocket type camara with a lot of features, look no more. This camara is great. I love the quality and the awesome size. The battery is great, it lasts for 360 shots! The controls are great to, and the LCD is huge. Its bigger than most camara LCDs. Is shoots great movies(for a digital camara) and it can also has a recording voice feature. I love all the shots i've taken, they are alot better than my previous camara(Konica Minolta XG). The camara has a good grip for such a compact camara. You can put it in your pocket and take it anywhere. If your looking for a small, take it anywhere camara, with good photo quality and long battery life this is the camara for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality, worst under low light
We bought this camera thinking we could take nice pictures in night events, sports, etc, because it has multiple ISO and shutter speed settings.

But you can't control speed or exposure, and we can't have good night shots, unless it's just an scene.

I'd rather buy a Canon or Sony the same price, not this fancy but useless Casio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Normally a canon lover, but this camera is AWESOME
I have been a Canon user all my life, and often recommend my customers to the Canon name (I work for a major electronics store in the camera department). So initially I was a little leary at purchasing a Casio camera... but I am not at all disappointed in the quality. Granted, I purchased it only two days ago, but I have taken over 70 pictures... and I am extremely impressed. The macro mode is phenominal, better then that of the Canon S400, allowing me to get practically on top of a flower with a clear picture. The other shooting modes on the camera are remarkable as well, even though I haven't had much of an oppurtunity to play with them. For instance, there is a sunset mode, which adds a reddish filter to the image, there is a portrait mode which blurs the background adding an effect to the subject, a landscape mode, and some other fun tools that allow you to take pictures of fireworks, to stitch yourself into a picture if there are only two people, and a black and white as well as sepia filter. The best part is the ease at accessing all of these modes.

Some of the best features I have seen from this camera are the battery, allowing the user to take over 300 pictures with one charge with the LCD running , the memory which by using SD allows the speed of taking pictures to be incredible, and of course, the lens quality which is made by Pentax . The actual size of the camera is what sets it apart from the rest- it's thin and compact, perfect for throwing into a shirt pocket, or a purse.

The only drawbacks I can see are the LCD in REALLY low light conditions tends to be a bit grainy, and the actual view finder itself is tough to use- especially for those who have vision problems- but since the camera is more or less designed to solely use the LCD, it works out. The only other recommendation I have is don't use the camera on normal mode- use it on fine if you want amazing quality pictures. Otherwise you may notice a grainy quality.

The bottom line is whether you are a new user, a novice, or a professional, you will be impressed with the sleek style and professional quality this camera has to offer. The average user will be impressed with the bonus features, and the person without a computer will be impressed with the editing abilities on the camera itself. I can not speak enough about this camera, its docking cradle, or the features it contains (if you couldn't tell). Its so intuitive- so user friendly, you have to wonder why other camera manufacturers haven't made it this easy. I am glad to see that Casio is getting back into the market, and the Exilim Z40 is definately a phenominal product. I hope if you purchase it, you enjoy it as much as I do. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Video, great 5MP stills
The SCD6550 is a great idea, but just doesn't preform as I had hoped.I was looking for one camera to take on vacation, replacing carrying a 2 year old Sony MiniDV and a 5 MP Sony CyberShot. My Sony takes 1 MP stills, has excellent video, but @ 1MP, the stills are not nearly print worthy. This camera is actually smaller and lighter than my Sony.

The 5MP still camera function gave excellent results, both with flash and with natural light and outside.Shot for shot it produced either as good or better prints (4x6) than the Sony CyberShot.

Digital video is this unit's short coming.I did identical shots inside and outside with the Sony and Samsung. The Samsung's video quality was very poor, looked more like analog or standard 8mm quality.Inside, with natural room lighting, it was pretty much unacceptable.Outside, the shots lacked the crispiness of the Sony.I took it back, will keep the Sony's and hope that Sony comes out with a greater than 2 or 3 MP model soon. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Quantity vs. Quality
If you're looking for a camcorder that can produce vivid colors and crystal clear picture, stop reading this review now. This camcorder is not for you.

If you can live with a medicore picture quality, but have the ability to virtually pocket a camcorder anywhere you go, read on.

The Styling:
No doubt, this camcorder exudes sex.Glossy finish with chrome accents.Bling! The styling is very appealing and will demand attention. The physical size is so small, it can be pocketed in a pair of jeans. However, the dimunitive size is also its disadvantage.Stabilizing the camcorder with one hand was a challenge due to it being so light and small. The physcial shape of the camcorder was very awkward to hold. Many times, the index finger would partially cover the lens during taping. It was just natural for the index finger to overlay on top of the lens. The zoom button is positioned for a thumb activation. However, when the thumb is re-positioned to employ the zoom button, the grip on the camcorder is compromised. The user will feel like the camera will drop from their hands when using the zoom button.

The Picture:
Outside daylight recording is acceptable.Color re-production is decent. There were still some slight noise in the image. However, there was an un-acceptable amount of purple fringing. This can be seen when recording a dark subject against a bright background. For example, point up at tree branches against a cloudy grey sky.The edges of the branch glows purple.
Indoor recording with common household lamps was littered with noise and poor contrast. The overall picture was very grainy. There were no details in black objects. For example, a black leather chair just shows up as a black object with no other details such as wrinkles or texture.

The Audio:
Audio recorded in 16 bit sounded very good.Voices were clear and with faithful reproduction. However, at times, the microphone was able to pick up the actual tape winding mechanism of the camcorder. It was a constant high pitch whine that can be heard during playback. This is most likely due to the fact that the camcorder is so small that the distance between the microphone and the tape motors are minimized. The same condition was exhibited during the usage of the zoom button.Loud clicks can be heard during playback as the zoom button snaps back.

Conclusion:
This is definitley a case study of Quantity vs. Quality. There is a price to pay for ultra portability. In my opinion, the size of this camcorder has reached the point of diminishing returns. In other words, the camera is too small to be ergonimically correct. The size also compromised the audio and video performance.Buy it to impress your friends......just don't let them watch the final result. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The HP PhotoSmart 945, featuring an 8x optical zoom lens and a 7x digital zoom (for 56x total), is one of the most affordable "big zoom, big megapixel" digital cameras on the market. Geared for the advanced amateur, it features a 5.3-megapixel resolution, advanced photo features, and a wide variety of manual controls. But it also has such automatic features as an on-camera wizard for getting the best shot, direct printing, and HP's Instant Share.

Optics and Resolution
With its 5.3-megapixel resolution, you can snap bright, detailed images with the PhotoSmart 945 that can be enlarged to poster size. It features two resolution options: 2608 x 1952 (5 MP) and 1296 x 976 (1 MP). The Fuji Photo lens has an 8x optical zoom that's coupled with a 7x digital zoom for a 56x total zoom. Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the PhotoSmart 945 can also record up to 60-second movie clips with sound at a 288 x 208 pixel resolution. The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

More Features
The 945 also includes HP's new, exclusive Adaptive Lighting technology, which balances brightness relationships between bright and dark areas in a photo, preserving gentle contrasts but compressing harsh contrasts. With clear and easy to use "low", "high" and "off" settings, the camera automatically balances shots by lightening specific areas within a photograph.

HP's on-camera help allows you to access quick and clear guidance on how to take the best picture with the HP PhotoSmart 945 digital camera's wide ranging functions. In addition, its enhanced manual controls allow concurrent photos to be taken through "burst" mode without having to wait for the camera to prepare before each shot. Other available creative controls include aperture, ISO, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, color and sharpness

With HP's Instant Share feature, you can customize your camera with e-mail aliases and distribution lists of your family and friends. For each picture, you can designate up to 14 destinations, including e-mail addresses, compatible printers, and more.

Other features include:

  • Large 2-inch LCD monitor
  • Built-in flash with auto, on, off, night, and red-eye reduction modes

Cutting down on desktop clutter, this convenient remote-controlled device enables you to easily transfer image files to your PC, print photos, or even view images on TV--all in one easy step

Storage and Transfer
The PhotoSmart 945 is compatible with Secure Digital (SD) MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards; a 32 MB SD card is included. When shooting in Best mode (2608 x 1952), you can store 11 images on the included memory card. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by 4 AA batteries (alkalines included, rechargeables recommended). It measures 4.84 by 3.35 by 3.35 inches and weighs 13.7 ounces excluding the batteries or 15.7 ounces when loaded with batteries.

Amazon.com Product Description

Introducing the first digital camera to remove redeye in the camera--the Nikon Coolpix 5200. This metal-bodied compact digital camera features a thinner body and more stylized feature than its predecessors (the Coolpix 2200 and 3200). It offers a resolution of 5 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom, and image storage in the 12 MB built-in memory or Secure Digital memory cards.

Optics and Resolution
The 5.0-megapixel CCD lets you capture spectacular images at resolutions up to 2,592 x 1,944 (a 15 MB file) and print enlargements at sizes up to 16 x 20 inches. It also features 2,048 x 1,536 (3 MP), 1,600 x 1,200 (2 MP), 1,280 x 9,600 (1 MP), 1,024 x 768 (PC), and 640 x 480 (TV) resolution modes. The retractable 3x Nikkor zoom lens has a focal range of 7.8 to 23.4mm (equivalent to a 38-114mm lens in 35mm format), and features aspherical elements and an ED glass element. The Coolpix 5200 also has a 4x digital zoom.

Movie Mode
Capture video with audio at 30 frames per second (fps) at three different settings: 640 x 480, 320 x 240, or 160 x 120 pixels. Movie length is only limited by the amount of storage you have on hand (either in internal memory or on external memory cards).

More Features
Nikon's exclusive in-camera redeye fix function analyzes image data and corrects typical instances of redeye in less than 3 seconds. It's activated when the camera is set to redeye-reduction flash mode, where the typical preflash first minimizes the redeye effect. The camera then analyzes the picture using powerful image processing and analysis technology, which is completely automatic and transparent.

The 5200 features a 3x optical and a 4x digital zoom
You have a choice of automatic, preset, and seven manual white balance modes. Additionally, the Coolpix 5200 divides the shooting area into segments to determine the most appropriate setting for the faithful capture of colors. There's also a white-balance bracketing function, which takes a series of three shots at different white-balance settings with just a single press of the shutter release.

Other features include:

  • 1.5-inch, 110,000-pixel LCD and real-image zoom viewfinder
  • Built-in flash with redeye reduction, auto, anytime flash, flash cancel, and slow sync modes
  • 15 scene modes, including four with Scene Assist (Portrait, Night Portrait, Landscape, Sports); others include Sunset, Close Up, Museum, Beach/Snow, Fireworks Show, Back Light, Party, Copy, Dusk/Dawn, and Night Landscape
  • Best Shot Selector (BSS) takes a series of shots, then automatically picks and records the clearest one
  • Macro shooting capability as close as 1.6 inches
Printing
Get as close as 1.6 inches in macro mode
The Coolpix 5200 is PictBridge-compatible, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to your printer without a PC or image-editing software. All PictBridge devices share three basic features: camera-to-printer connecting, single-image printing, and uniform error messages in case something goes wrong.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored in either the internal 12 MB flash RAM memory (with a capacity of approximately 10 high-resolution images) or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. Images can be downloaded to either Macs or PCs via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based PC running Windows Me/2000/XP or Mac running OS 8.6 or later without your having to install any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (EN-EL5), which has an approximate battery life of 150 frames. It measures 3.5 by 2.3 by 1.4 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 ounces without the battery or memory card.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Nikon Coolpix 5200 digital camera, a hand strap, USB and A/V cables, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery (EN-EL5), a battery charger (MH-61), a quick-start guide, and an instruction manual. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just whant to say
Hi-I just wanted to say that the guy who gave this 2 stars wrote that same review for a lot of cameras so dont be fooled by there review. Its a GREAT CAMERA!

2-0 out of 5 stars a HUGE disappointment
I really wanted to love this camera - but alas, it was not to be. The ability to capture video with sound at VGA was a real big selling point for me, but of course, it is primarily a still camera....which is where it falls terribly short.

The first one I bought I had to return because the focus was defective. I called Nikon and they said to take it back. The second one took decent quality photos, but not only was there a pixel out on the display (which would be okay if the camera wasn't $525), but there was also a defect on the ocular viewfinder which showed as a "warped" area in the form of a line right across the center.

I have a Kodak DC290 2.1 MP that is about six years old and it takes much sharper pictures that this Nikon. I was really shocked by the lack of overall quality control (two cameras defective) and the lack of sharp images. For now, I will stick with my old Kodak until something with all the features that are in this Nikon comes along --- and works.

***UPDATE***
I returned this and got the Sony Cybershot DSCP100 instead. WOW! What a difference! With the Sony, all of the same horrible test photos I took with the Nikon came out excellent! Not only that, but I saved $100. Thank you Sony...

5-0 out of 5 stars Nikon Quality Evident
This one is indeed stylish in design. An excellent camera in the 5.1MP, compact Range. Small but big on features. With such wide range of features, I am surprised how very intuitive the user interface is. You really dont need the manual. You will be up and running in minutes.

Picture quality is excellent in all its modes. The Nikkor Lens with its ED & Aspherical elements, provides an impeccable quality of pictures. Sharp, crisp and vibrant colours. Low light focussing is fast. Interface to the computer? You dont need any driver software if you are on XP, 2000 or Mac. All USB. Just Plug it and you see a drive configured on your windows explorer which you can manage it just like a hard disk. Pictures in seconds!! The 1"X1" 256 MB SD memory card can store 270, 6"X4" high quality images. Movie recording is smooth, not at all jumpy, very powerful microphone. Treats it just like a picture. Make movie in seconds and send it...

I indeed recommend that you look at this one before you make a decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just bought mine.
I really like my new 5200. I am new to the digital camera scene but I'm glad I bought the Nikon. The salesman explained the diferences between the many 5 Meg cameras in stock and I found the Nikon to be the easiest to learn to operate. My wife is usually the camera person in the house but I believe this camera will be much more fun than a regular film camera. I love the idea of snapping loads of shots, looking at them on the computer, and THEN deciding which ones to keep. Digital is the way to go and this Nikon is the way to get there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studied for months and bought the 5200
I have been looking at digital camers for a very long time. I wanted a 5 mega-pixel at the consumer price range that was easy to use and small enough to place in a pocket. The Nikon 5200 meets these simple needs and far exceeds any other expectation. From the start this was an easy camera to operate. I was taking pictures right out of the box. After spending some time to read about it's other capabilities, I learned that there are some super cool things it can do. The "sport" mode is wonderful. I can take a picture of a golf swing, my son pitching, or any other action shot with a series of 21 pictures in rapid succession. You get to see the progression of the action through each frame. The Movie mode is also cool. It is very easy to move from pictures to movies. You don't have to be a member of Mensa to maneuver through the options. I love the ability to add voice memos to the pictures AND, this to is very easy. Nothing complicated about this camera. Loads of options, easy to use, OH and did I mention great looking pictures....So happy I waited for the Nikon 5200. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Enjoying
I recieved this camera for my graduation present. I really enjoy the little size and its capability. The digital effects that are possible to use are kind of neat, you can choose between easy and several different settings to be able to capture the best picture for the things you are shooting. It also has the ability to be transfered to your computer, which is nice, you can edit your clips. all in all this is a pretty nice product. HfHf ^^

2-0 out of 5 stars You can pass...
I bought this and owned it for two days. Its a decent MiniDV but you can do better at this price!

Noise was a major issue. The motor is just loud and it gets picked up in quiet scenes pretty bad.

Other than that the video recorded was of real good quality. But there was an issue with something going on when inserting a tape.It wasn't ejecting properly for some odd reason.I took it back after finding a deal on a Sony HC20 (that works a lot better/smoother than the Canon).

The only reason why I got this was because it was recommended by an Apple rep...well - this isn't the best MiniDV out there at this price.Panasonic has a fantastic MiniDV for almost the same price...I'd pass on this one guys...

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for price - NOISY!
I am curious to find out if anyone has this model and the noise is not audible? If you use the LCD it gets worse!

The picture is okay, and the price is not bad - I wish I read the reviews before I purchased!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you don't mind noise
I recently purchased the Zr100...I'm pretty camera literate and knew Canon to be a good brand. Brought the camera home and was playing with...when I was watching what I had recorded I noticed a "white noise" in the background...even when people were talking. The motor/fan on this camera is so loud that it really distorts and videos you take...it sounds like an old reel to reel is running 5 feet away. I called Canon about it and they suggested that I play background sound while recording to drown out the sound of the motor...well that doesn't work for video taping school plays etc...I'm returning this camera...hopefully not all MiniDVs have this problem. ... 188. Canon Optura 400 MiniDV Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom

Manufacturer: Canon Video

Amazon.com Product Description

Canon raises the stakes for all-in-one digital imaging devices with the release of the Canon Optura 400 (and its sibling Optura 500; see a comparison table at the end), which is as adept at shooting digital video as it is snapping high-resolution digital stills. Shorter and more lightweight than its predecessors, the brushed silver Optura 400 weighs just 1.2 pounds with tape and battery and measures 2.1 x 4.2 x 4.0 inches. It offers 2.2-megapixel resolution for fine video and photo details, a 10x optical zoom lens, image stabilization, built-in SD/MMC memory card slot, and PictBridge compatibility for direct printing of still photos to compatible printers.

Optics and Resolution
The Optura 400 has a 2.2-megapixel CCD, which produces 1230K effective pixels for video and 2 million effective pixels for still photos, for images up to 1623 x 1224 pixels (good enough for print enlargements up to 8 x 10 inches). Canon's camcorder lens features the same quality found in 35mm and broadcast TV cameras, and the Optura 400 has a 10x optical zoom lens that delivers good definition and contrast as well as a 200x digital zoom. In addition, the lenses feature a unique spectral coating to reduce flare and ghosting, resulting in optimal indoor and outdoor shots.

The RGB Primary Color Filter separates light passing through the lens into red, green and blue color components providing similar color quality found in professional 3 CCD camcorders, yielding truer more natural looking colors. Canon's DIGIC DV signal processing circuit makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and digital photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Shooting Video
With the high-resolution 16:9 widescreen mode, the Optura 400 utilizes the entire width of the CCD (unlike some systems that electronically stretch the picture vertically) retaining image quality and providing a wider horizontal angle of view that is ideal for creating a theater-like experience.A variety of Program Auto Exposure settings allow for easy, optimal shooting in a wide range of lighting situations. The Optura 400 is also equipped with Manual Audio Level Control, commonly found only on prosumer camcorder models, and a swivel grip and palm pad, providing maximum comfort when shooting for long periods of time.

The Motion JPEG Mode records your footage onto the Secure Digital memory card at 320 x 240 resolution, giving you up to 60 minutes of recording time on an optional 512 MB card.

Still Photos
The Optura 400 saves still image files to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB card is included with the camcorder). It offers a number of photographic controls that make it easy to get the right shot, including:

  • Selectable Focusing Points for bringing off-center subjects into sharp focus
  • Continuous Shooting Mode enables rapid fire shooting--up to 3 frames-per-second (1632 x 1224) or up to 5 frames-per-second (1280 x 960, 640 x 480)
  • Simultaneous Photo Recording lets you capture e-mail ready digital photos (640 x 480) while you record video
  • Auto Exposure Bracketing lets you shoot three photos-Ñnormal, underexposed and overexposed--with the press of one button
  • The Built-in flash with Red-Eye Reduction is perfect for taking photos at night, indoors, or filling in shadows
  • Horizontal & Vertical Trimming Function and Photo Review Function allow you to make edits directly in the camcorder
  • Stitch Assist enables you to capture and create breathtaking 360-degree panoramas
  • The Skin Detail Mode helps you take complimentary close-ups of people by softening details and reducing skin imperfections
Connect directly to any Canon CP-series Photo Printer or Canon Bubble Jet Direct Printer using the supplied USB cable. You can also connect directly to other Pictbridge compatible printers, and because the camcorder tags each photo you take with information based on Exif 2.2 Print standards, poor lighting and mistakes can be corrected automatically by the printer.

Other Features
The advanced Image Stabilization system works behind the scenes even when youÕre panning and zooming, shooting videos or photos. The Optura 400's large 2.5-inch LCD and color viewfinder helps you compose shots from any angle.

With the press of the Night Mode button, the camcorder automatically selects a slow shutter speed and increases the sensitivity of the CCD to brighten the image, while still preserving color. Two additional low-light settings can be assigned to the Night Mode button -- Super Night Mode and Night++ Mode. When selected, Super Night Mode automatically triggers the white LED Lamp when needed to enhance the subject for shooting. Night++ Mode is used in the toughest lighting situations, keeping the white LED Lamp on all the time.

Connectivity
The Optura 400 connects to Macs and Windows-based PCs via a Firewire terminal (also known as iLink or IEEE1394), enabling high video and audio quality during duplication or editing. An Analog Line-in/Out with Analog/Digital Converter allows you to easily transform your analog memories into digital, all in real-time. The camcorder also features a Network Mode, which enables you to remotely control your camcorder through the DVÊMessenger2 software application. Control the focus and zoom of your camcorder from a computer while streaming the video via its Firewire terminal.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Optura 400 digital video camcorder, rechargeable battery pack (NB-2LH), power adapter (CA-570), wireless controller (WL-D83), A/V cable, 8 MB SD memory card, USB cable, and Digital Video Solution CD-ROM, which includes:

  • Pinnacle Studio gives you every tool you need to easily capture video to your computer, edit footage, add titles, music, narration and special effects and then output the finished movie back to videotape, DVD or the web.
  • Pinnacle Instant Album can help you quickly organize your digital photos and video clips into interactive, high-resolution slideshows that can then be burned onto CD and DVD or watched on your TV with Instant PhotoAlbum
It's covered by a 1-year limited warranty (3 months for the video head part).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Camera Ever!!!!
No wonder its the best selling digital camera of the year. Sure you need a larger memory card and different batteries but all I did was buy some lithium batteries and they are still full powered and they arent that expensive! Its not like the memory cards are a million dollars so whats to complain? A great camera for under 200 dollars! Bonus: it is so hott!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
The prints from this camera are as sharp as my Canon 35MM and I can carry it in my pocket. Excellent Value!

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this camera!!!
I previously owned a 3.1 MP camera by Sony that I honestly thought didn't take such great pics. So, I was wary about buying another Sony. I did some research on this one and found that it got a lot of positive feedback. I love taking pics wherever I go, so size was also a factor in choosing the right camera for me. You will be amazed at how tiny this camera is! The pictures look great and when I print them at home, they look as though I just picked them up at my local photo stop. They have different settings so you can choose just the right lighting and it even has a feature that allows you to take black & white photos. Please note that you need to buy an additional media card because at 4.1MP, the card it comes with only holds 8 pictures! It's very easy to use and definitely makes a great gift idea. Two of my friends have went on to purchase this camera and love it. Oh, as with any digital camera... make sure you invest in rechargeable batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!! $200 For a good looking 4MP Sony Digital Camera??!!
I should have bought this camera on Amazon instead of Circuit City's online site. Amazon doesn't tax you and will also give you a $25 coupon on some digital camera accessory purchases, and also if you buy $250 or more of electronics at Amazon, they'll give you a $50 certificate on your next purchase. So, if you buy this camera and then buy the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro (256MB for ~$60), you'll get that $50 certificate (act FAST!! offer ends AUGUST 1). With that $50 certificate, you can purchase those much needed rechargables on your next purchase, or go to Costco like me and buy that $20 Panasonic charger with 6 AA and 2AAA batteries in the package. Those batteries are good for digital cameras (2100 mAH). Not to bad for $20.

I've used this camera for about a month, and its going great. Decided to buy screen protectors for it (saw some at Radioshack for ~6.00), and also just purchased that SanDisk 256MB Memory Stick Pro. That'll store about 100+ pictures on 4MP. The camera does eat up a lot of batteries, so rechargables are a must. Quality is excellent, but the zoom is only pretty good. But hey, it's only $200 and what do you expect? My girlfriend has an Aiptek, and although their price on their products are ~100, the aiptek digital cameras can't shoot in low to no light conditions at all. This sony definitely can.

I also found a Minolta 4MP camera with opt. zoom for $220 at Amazon, but the appearance and size of it is not comparable to this Sony DSCP41. I'd pick this one even though it lacks the opt. zoom. Also, to the person that wrote about how this Sony digicam's lens is not protected, yah it isn't really that protected. Luckily the shutter comes on when it is not in use for about a min. or when you turn it off. Just not smudge the lens and clean it once in a while and it will be fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
I don't own this but was thinking about it... it says "The camera is powered by two AA batteries (alkalines included, NiMH rechargeables recommended). It measures 4 x 2.13 x 1.38 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 ounces without Memory Stick or batteries. "
Realize the word recomended after rechargeables... it says alkline included... so that would be your problem ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Olympus C-7070
This camera was a new model just released when I purchased it.I was after the C-5060 but to was able to get the 7.1 megapixel camera with the even sharper pictures for just a couple of bucks more.Olympus makes quality cameras, though they tend to always be changing models, and this new model is definitely that. There is a bit of a learning curve to properly use this camera, but once done it is quite simple to get high quality shots all the time, inside or outside, night or day, sunny or cloudy. The wide angle zoom is very nice, however to really get wide angle landscape or inside group photos you need to get the .45 wide angle lens attachment. Also the 3.0 telephoto attachment, too while you're at it. It is not necessary to buy these attachments and adapter at Olympus.Check J&R Photo and 47th Street Photo on the web for high quality lenses at a fraction of the Olympus price. 1st rate quality and professional help, if needed. Also, the 32 megabyte Xd picture card will hold only a very few shots with any kind of printable resolution so get at least a 512 megabyte card that will allow you some shots before you fill it up.512 mb cards can be found with a bit of shopping for 1/3 the Olympus price. All in all this is a very quality mid-range camera that should be suitable for most enthusiasts and those who prefer easy to get quality photos. ... Read more

The size also compromised the audio and video performance.Buy it to impress your friends......just don't let them watch the final result. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bushnell Yardage Pro Tour is a great tool!
I bought Bushnell Yardage Pro Tour unit through adorama.com on 5/17/2004 and it arrived with no problems. You get an email with order confirmation and when you log into your account there is a link to ups tracking number. Someone posted a negative comment about them not having a phone number listed but at their site but I see the phone number listed on every single page so I think that that comment is wrong. Their prices are lowest I could find and I had no problems with order/delivery at all. Bushnell Yardage Pro Tour unit is great for golf. It is compact and extremely easy to use. I use it on the driving range with all my clubs. You can easily get a distance for any visible target on the range (tree, bunker, flag, slopes) and figure out the exact club you need for that distance. Knowing the exact distance a ball will travel has helped my game a lot. This unit is the great! ... Read more

I spent over 20 hours researching my recent camcorder purchase. The best site was camcorderinfo.com. In fact, they just posted a thorough review of the GRD72 and also have reviews of one model down (D33) and one model up (D93) from this one. Also be sure to check out the competing models' reviews (Sony and Canon).

What I was looking for in a camcorder, was, surprise surprise (!) good video performance in a range of lighting conditions. I had read that low-light performance on ALL so-called consumer camcorders was very poor. The D72 (and D33) have the best low-light performance of ANY camcorder priced $600 or less! That's saying a ton considering these models sell for almost half of that! Seriously, check out the Sony HC20, 30, or 40 and the D72 beats them all! Plus it has decent still image capability, includes LED lights, and has analog-to-digital passthrough. Can't be beaten! What a deal!

Super easy to use and great video - what more could you want? Some of the other reviews on amazon for the D72 seem bizarre and based only on the software that comes with the camera. You likely won't use the software that comes with ANY camcorder you buy. What do you want out of your camcorder? Good video performance, versatiliy, and ease of use are the only criteria that matter! Dig around on the Internet for reviews of other models to convince yourself, but if you take this reviewer's advice alone, you'll save yourself a dozen hours of work! :-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced mini-DV camcorder
Unlike others, the JVC software loaded without a hitch, but as reported by others, it leaves alot to be desired. I am waiting on a new laptop to retest with FireWire and my copy of Magix Movie Edit Pro 2004.

The sales girl at BestBuy claimed it would record video to the SD card, but that was not correct. I have also been unable to download video at higher than 320x240 res. I am hoping the FireWire fixes some of this.

The real user of this camera will be my wife and the point and shoot simplicity is a must. She will be using it to record people during speech therapy and the remote control will be a handy plus.

PS. I find it rather strange that they do not include a tape and/or a small SD ram card.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased so far!
I've only had this camera for a week now, but I'm very pleased with what I got for the price. I have a degree in cinema & photography, so I like to think I know a few things about cameras.

PROS

Nearly all the controls can be manipulated with one hand, thanks to the scroll wheel. Pushing it in brings up the menu, and scrolling the wheel allows you to select the menus and features you want to change. Another push of the wheel selects the menu item you want to change. This is a great feature that pretty much sold me on the camera, as the Sonys rely on a touch-pad LCD. The trouble with that is you must have the LCD screen out whenever you want to alter a setting, and therefore you have to take the camera away from your eye and use both hands. You also use up your battery twice as fast, and you'll eventually wear out the LCD screen and get it dirty. No thanks, Sony.

It also has a built-in LED light for low-light shooting. This doesn't compare to the infra-red of the Sonys, but then again infra-red gives you a green "night-vision" picture. If low-light shooting is important to you and you don't mind the greenish video, then go with infra-red.

It uses a separate SD memory card for digital stills (card not included).

The viewfinder is color, not b&w like some camcorders.

Analog-to-digital pass-through for converting your old analog tapes (VHS, etc.)

Remote control included! Big plus in my book.

It has a bigger lens than the Sonys (but still not as big as the Canons). This should result in better picture quality; however, it does make the camcorder slightly larger and heavier than the Sonys.

The optical zoom is 16x, versus 10x on the Sonys. (Canon even has a camcorder with 22x zoom.)

JVC bundles MovieWOW software for editing your videos. I haven't used it yet, but it's a freebie so it's worth trying out. You can also download Microsoft's Movie Maker software for free if you don't like MovieWOW.

At less than $400 it's the best value out there. (...) CONS

The viewfinder doesn't tilt up -- strange that JVC wouldn't incorporate this feature, as it would be a big plus. I'm over 6' tall, so when the camcorder is mounted on a 5' tripod I have to stoop to look through the viewfinder. (Yes, I can pop out the LCD screen and angle it up to view the picture instead, but this eats up battery power as I said. I could also get a 6' tripod, I suppose.)

There's no hot shoe on top to mount an external microphone or flood light -- another oversight on JVC's part.

No included SD memory card for digital stills. Oddly, you can only select "tape" or "tape & SD" for capturing stills, so either way it's going to record the still to tape. Why JVC didn't give you the option of writing stills strictly to the SD card is beyond me. No matter -- the stills any camcorder takes are low-resolution, so if you want good digital stills then buy a digital still camera instead.

Image stabilization is disappointing, but that's true with all the camcorders I tried out. It's somewhat helpful, but it's certainly not going to turn your camcorder into a Steadicam. Use a tripod when at high zoom levels, or keep the lens as wide as possible when hand-holding to smooth out your tilts and pans.

Night vision mode slows down the shutter speed, making your video a bit choppy.

OTHER ADVICE

Go to a camera or electronics store and try out the different cameras before making a decision. You might be surprised by the features you hate and the ones you love. This is what steered me away from the Sonys and to this JVC model.

Turn off the digital zoom -- it's worthless (this is true of any camcorder).

Make sure you add on a UV filter, if only to protect the lens. This should be standard issue for all camcorders.

Also consider a polarizing filter for sunny outdoors shooting -- makes a big difference.

A flourescent filter is a good idea if you will be shooting indoors where flourescent light dominates (office or industrial settings, for instance).

If zoom is important to you, consider adding on a 2x or even 3x telephoto multiplier. This will turn your 16x zoom in a 32x zoom, or 48x zoom, respectively. But be warned -- at those zoom levels, you'd better have a rock-solid tripod to keep the picture as steady as possible.

You need a firewire connection to your computer to get the best transfers. If you don't have firewire on your commputer, you'll need to buy an add-in card.

Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap for the price
Great camera for the price....no problems with the camera so far.... good quality picture

the stills are decent too....with the money i saved, i can get an excellent still camera :)

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
Wow, after reading the previous reviews on this camera I thought it must be a pretty good deal. Boy was I wrong! I've had the camera about a week and think I may have made a bad choice in going back to JVC. MiniDV cameras are supposed to be better than Hi8, but I really can't see it with this camera.

Here are my complaints. The video quality leaves much to be desired; it actually looks quite "fuzzy" (even in SP mode) giving the video a look of pixelation or tiling. Digital stills are really lousy, which I expected from a camcorder. The NightAlive feature is useless, unless you have a tripod on which to steady the camera, and even then don't expect to see much. For example, I tried to take some video of my backyard at night, under a full moon and some ambient light and the camera couldn't pick up anything further than 2-3 feet away from the lens. By comparision, one of my relatives has a Digital8 Sony camcorder and the night vision feature on that camera is fantastic and the camera cost him less. As other reviewers have noted, the motor is loud and clearly audible on recordings with little ambient noise. Finally, the included battery lasts about 1.5 hours.

On the good side, the camera is quite small, but that is hardly a selling point for MiniDV cameras are all quite small. Frankly, I see nothing to set this camera apart and think I'm going to exchange it for (hopefully) a better one. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're new to the world of digital photography, the Olympus D-580 offers just the right blend of easy-to-use features and high-quality optics that delivers vivid pictures. The D-580 Zoom has a durable polycarbonate body with an attractive metallic accent on its sliding protective clamshell lens barrier. It also features a 4-megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom, movie mode with sound, a bright LCD monitor to review images, and Olympus's new TruePic Turbo image processor, which speeds up the camera's start-up, shutter lag, recording and playback time.

Optics and Resolution
The 4-megapixel D-580 captures 2288 x 1712 pixel images for prints up to 11 x 14 inches. It also has 1600 x 1200 (2MP) and 640 x 480 (VGA) resolution modes. It features a 3x optical zoom that, when combined with a 4x digital zoom, delivers a total seamless 12x zoom. The aspherical all-glass zoom lens is constructed of 7 lenses in 6 groups and has a focal length of 5.8-17.4mm (35-105mm equivalent in 35mm photography) and an aperture range of f3.1-f5.2.

Movie Mode and Audio
In addition to capturing still images, you can also shoot short videos with sound (its companion D-540 has no sound capabilities) at 15 frames per second (fps). The D-580 has two resolution modes: 320 x 240 and 160 x 120. The built-in microphone can also capture short memos that can be appended to each message

More Features
The D-580 is one of the first Olympus models to feature TruePic Turbo, a new image processor that sharpens image clarity, contrast, and color for life-like results. This feature also makes the camera 30% faster in processing images and is combined with a super-fast shutter release time.

The D-580 offers a menu architecture that's easy to navigate for fast access to the right settings with just the press of arrow buttons. Seven preset shooting modes can be accessed through the "Virtual Dial" (viewable through the LCD menu) to provide fully automatic exposure adjustments; these include Program Auto, Portrait, Portrait-Landscape, Landscape, Night Scene, Self Portrait, and Movie.

Other features include:

  • 1.8-inch TFT color LCD monitor (approximately 85,000 pixels)
  • Optical real-image viewfinder
  • 1.5 frames per second burst up to 12 frames
  • Built-in flash with auto, red-eye reduction, fill-in, and off modes

Direct Printing
The D-580 is PictBridge compatible, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to a compatible printer (such as the Olympus P-10), without a PC or image-editing software. All PictBridge devices share three basic features: camera-to-printer connecting, single-image printing, and uniform error messages (in case something goes wrong).

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on XD Picture Card memory cards. The card's small size, about the same as a postage stamp, helps to keep the camera size down. The included 16 MB card will store approximately 16 images at 2288 x 1712 pixels (at HQ, JPEG setting). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1 connectivity, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98 Rev2Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by 2 AA batteries (alkalines included, NiMH rechargeable recommended) or 1 CR-V3 battery. It measures 4.3 x 2.3 x 1.4 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.8 ounces (excluding batteries and storage media).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Camera
i got this camera for Christmas and i love it because it is very easy to use and to hook it up to the computer is soo easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value!
This camera is an excellent value! It is very cheap for a four megapixel camera, has zoom, takes great, sharp, and colorful pictures! I bought this camera for my girlfriend based on what I had read about ease of use for this camera. You would be hard pressed to find a more user friendly camera in this price range or above. THe auto focus on this camera is excellent! We have taken lots of picures with this camera during the day and night and little have come out anything but clear and colorful. Two of the night photos I took of fireworks came out blurry but this is to be expected when not using a tripod. This is a great camera that has a very powerful flash and is easy to use. A word of warning would be not to even try using Alkaline batteries, they will be spent in about 20 shots. One warning, for outdoor wildlife enthusiasts, the zoom motor on this camera is very loud! Instead get one of the Lithium CR-V3 batteries which give excellent picture taking volume in this camera. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for an easy to use, great working and low priced camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camera
It is an excellent camera for this price (I bought it for $250 about 2 weeks ago). Last week I used it to take pictures in Niagara Falls during day and night. The pictures during the day are crisp. During the night, I held it by hand to take pictures of rapids and the water falls (without flash). The water flow effect was surpringly clear and bright.

Its TruePic Turbo image processor is indeed very fast. I used the camera to take pictures of fireworks. During 10 minutes I took tens of pictures.

However, it is quite necessary to have four recargable Ni-Mh AA batteries with this camera. It uses battery power pretty fast.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Camera for the Price
I purchased this camera for my wife because of it's ease of use (point'n'click) and the lense is automatically covered when turned off (protects lense in her purse or briefcase). It is a nice camera, easy to use, picture quality is OK (my daughter's Kodak 6340 and my Nikon 5700 pictures are much sharper), good camera for beginners. Batteries do not last long, pictures blurred with full digital zoom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little camera
This is my second Olympus and I really like it. Small and compact, takes great pictures. Easy to understand instructions. Great point and shoot camera. I wish the lense cover and body were a bit stronger. Lense cover seems a bit flimsy - like it may not last a long time without breaking. But we will see. I have only had it about a week. I bought the Cannon A75 and hated it and took it back. Olympus takes much better pictures and it much more amature user friendly. Cannon seems to be for the professional that knows how to manually set the settings. But if you want a great little point and shoot camera "Cheaper" than cannon, then go with Olympus. I think my next one will be the Olympus Stylus, since it is made for all weather and a all steel body. I wish I had gotten the Stylus, but it is a bit more expensive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great camera
I agree with the 12 year old. I have used this camera for three weeks and think it is just great. I have been to two birthday parties indoors and the lighting was great,I used video and still pictures. I love that it is so quick and easy to go back and forth between the two.I have also used it in a Butterfly Museum and the pictures were so true to color that my friends want copies sent to thier computers. When I first bought this I was just looking for a plan digital camera and I'm so pleased that I chose this instead. When I bought it my children and I (ages 12 and 15)took a tape and the book and learned how to use it and tried every feature indoors and out and had such a good time and now we know how to use it.I suggest to the people who didn't read the book to go and open it and learn something. We think it great and will let our friends that are looking to buy a camera to give it a try. Also a great price for the features.

5-0 out of 5 stars All these other reviews are crap!!!!
Why is everybody so upset that it doesnt make indoors look like outside???
It doesnt make anything darker on the video filmed inside, it just gives an accurate depiction of what the lighting is really like. Its not going to make the scene look like you have 1000 watt bulbs everywhere, but that is realistic. Those people claiming that having the the video resembling the actual envirenent that is was shot in is bad, is a bunch of crap. Film in a dark area and the footage will dark. Shouldnt that be obvious??

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst camcorder i've ever owned!
I was looking to upgrade from my VHS-C to the Mini DV format since it is supposed to be much better, but believe that it was a big mistake getting this camcorder. To me the quality isn't much better than older formats and nothing to gawk about in awe as some may have you think. I will probably be using my VHS-C until it breaks now that I have seen this Mini DV format in action and how horrible it can be. In this review I would like to talk about why this camcorder is so bad.

PROBLEM #1: VIDEO QUALITY IN LOW LIGHT AND INDOORS

This camcorder records video that is absolutely horrendous in low light and indoors. My 3 year old Panasonic VHS-C is absolutely leaps and bounds above this camcorder indoors and outside at night time as far as quality is concerned. The picture quality is so bad that it is not even worth trying to watch unless you want a headache. The night mode that the camcorder has does absolutely nothing except slow the shutter speed down to the point where everything looks like distorted robot movement. As another reviewer stated I can not stress how bad the quality of low light and indoor video is on this camcorder but heres some comparisons. Old 8mm camcorders (the kind you view with a projector remember these) look 100 times better than the ZR85 as far as quality is concerned in these situations. My digital camera and VHS-C camcorder look like a Hollywood film production compared to the ZR85. Basically think in you're worst imagination what it can look like and then multiply those bad thoughts by 1000 to get a clear picture of how bad it is. This was not the fault of the lighting in my house or outdoors where I was recording, I tried using streetlights, LED flashlights, a 2.25million candlepower spotlight, halogen flashlights, my backyard 500 watt floodlight, all the lights in the house on, all the lights in the house off, etc and in every situation the video quality was pure garbage. I tried changing settings on the camcorder to improve it such as the low light setting, night mode, changing the white balance, shutter speed, etc, no improvement there either. I even went to the store and bought the light that mounts to the top of the camcorder and tried with that on and no improvement there either. The picture is so dark that even under any of these lighting conditions you can't see anything with clarity. I did have two other people with me at the same time recording with my digital camera and VHS-C and both of those were hugely better than the ZR85.

PROBLEM #2: OUTDOOR PICTURE QUALITY

I wasn't too impressed with the outdoor picture quality of this camcorder either. This was my first attempt at a Mini DV camcorder and I was expecting a big improvement over VHS-C but as it turns out they look about the same to me on a 36" tv. The outdoor quality is much much better than indoor however.

PROBLEM #3: BATTERY LIFE

I'm not sure how canon rates it's battery life or how others got more than me but the battery life is unacceptable on this camcorder. Using the LCD I got around 30 minutes before the thing was dead, with the viewfinder about 40 minutes, that is ridiculous.
RECOMMENDATION

As far as good things there really were none that I can think of about this camcorder compared to others I looked at in the store, and I'm hoping the store I bought it from will let me return it or exchange it even if I have to pay a restocking fee it's worth it to me. If you are looking for a Mini DV camcorder and want to occasionally shoot video indoors or at night I would recommend straying far away from this POS. I haven't tried any other models yet but I don't believe that any of them can be as bad as this thing. I may try one of the other brands with night vision before sticking to VHS-C but as of yet I haven't been convinced that Mini DV is worth changing to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible indoor video quality
We purchased this camcorder yesterday and have been extremely dissapointed in the quality of video. So much so, we will be returning it as soon as possible. When filming indoors, both at night with typical lighting in our living room, and during the day with typical lighting from the windows on a sunny day. The quality of the video is extremely bad, very grainy. It is so bad that it is not even worth watching. Had I received this camera for free, I would not waste my time filming anything inside. Maybe there are settings to improve this, or maybe our house has strange poor lights - but in any case - I do not have the time nor knowledge to mess with settings, nor am I going to buy a new house that has better lighting. Maybe my standards are too high. But I can not tell you how bad the indoor video was.

However, I went outside today in bright sunshine and made some recordings. I was very impressed with the quality of video in these circumstances. The optical zoom is very good, colors are great and sharp.

Knowing that I will be filming alot of video insdoors this camera is not acceptable. In fact, we also bought a regular Canon digital camera and the video it takes (only 30 seconds at a time) is actually much better than the ZR85. Not great, but alot better than the camcorder.

If you are looking for a home video camera, are not an expert videographer, looking for an inexpensive camera to film some videos indoors - than this is NOT the camera for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars be prepared for its tape noise
First when I got the camera (I purchased from online), I kind of like it. Very compact. It does not come with DV tape and I purchased one from local store. Once I load the tape and I heard the noise that the tape is rotating even without making any videos. I called Canon customer support and described the noise and was told it is like that and nothing particularly wrong with the one I got. When I told the custmoer representative that the camcorder my friend purchased from Sony does not seem have such problem and that guy simply replies 'OK'. Make me feel that since you chose Canon, you have to live with our problem. By the way, before I made the purchase, I read quite a few reviews about Canon poor customer services. Now I understood.

Regarding the SD card loaded with a lot of 'wallpaper'-like pictured as decscribed by the first reviewer, you can delete them. Thoese pictures are just protected, You can unprotect the pictures first and it will allow you to delete. But I suggest that you copy those pictures to your computer first before you do anything. Those are very nice background and you can use them as a frame, background for your pictures when you edit later on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT SONY CAMERA
Before you buy DSC-V1, here are some tips about it:
The camera is excellent, considering image quality and features. You can manually set the functions or set the automatic mode (helps beginners but provide features for more advanced photographers - get the manual in Sony Website). The image is better than P92, for V1 has bigger Carl Zeiss lens. P92 is very very easy to use, but V1 has a range of features not available in P92.
1) it requires extra memory stick (which, as you might now is more expensive than compact flash). 256Mb is recommended. 128Mb provides 80 photos full-quality. (any 5.0 Camera, whatever the brand, needs extra memory though.)
2) Spare battery would be useful. The NP-FC11 lasts about 80 minutes and take 2hrs to recharge.
3) Unlike old Sony cameras, you can take pictures faster (whether P32, P92 or V1), but when using V1 with flash, you need to wait few seconds to energy recharge (a bad thing if you need the flash and don't want to miss a thing) - but it's like 3 seconds.
4) A very nice feature is the nightframing and nightshots - it has infrared visor for very dark places.
Comparing to P92, the improvements are amazing. I used them both and found P92 easy to use, but V1 has many useful features, better for those who want to make creative or art photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars sony has a topnotch 5MP camera in the DSC-V1
the sony dsc-v1 is a top-notch camera that is more portable than its competition. it offers full manual control, 5MP resolution, and 4x optical zoom. i do have a few nits though...

pros:
- 5MP, 4x optical zoom.
- great image quality.
- above average resolution, good tonal balance, good color response.
- full manual control.
- images exhibit very low noise, even at higher ISO.
- image processing parameter control (contrast, saturation and sharpening).
- very fast auto focus!
- quick startup, fast shot-to-shot times (except when shooting TIFF).
- fast write times to memory stick.
- has NightFraming which allows you to focus and compose your scene in total darkness with the aid of the infrared emitter, then shoot a full-color shot using the built-in flash. very cool.
- better than average movie mode.
- compared to the competition (canon g5 and nikon 5400), the dsc-v1 is more compact: dimensions are 4.0"W x 2.6"H x 2.3"D weighing 10.9 oz.
- solid build quality.
- bright, high resolution LCD monitor with anti-reflective coating that works.
- battery charges in-camera, charger doubles as AC adapter.
- hot shoe for external flash (limited to specific sony flashes, though).
- many optional accessory lenses (telephoto, wide angle, filter lenses) available.
- histogram in Live view, Record review and Playback modes
- USB 2.0 means faster downloads.

cons:
- colors a bit washed out.
- noise levels higher than expected
- some purple fringing.
- mild chromatic aberrations visible.
- higher redeye occurrence.
- RAW format not supported.
- saving a TIFF file locks up the camera.
- continuous shooting capability limited to 3 frames.
- minimum ISO setting at 100.
- zoom control is oriented differently so it will take a few tries to get used to it.
- ergonomic issues: tiny menu and resolution keys, very easy to block the flash and optical viewfinder with fingers, left index finger falls right on top of the pop-up flash, suppressing it.
- lots of key functions are buried in menus.
- below average battery performance.
- no separate user settings.
- like most sony products, you pay a premium, pushing up the price.
- expensive memory stick pro cards.
- uses a proprietary battery so add a few bucks to buy a spare (or maybe two given the battery performance).
- the supplied 32MB memory stick is inadequate - again, more $$ for more memory.
- you'll need to remove from tripod to get to the battery or memory stick.

sony has succeeded in delivering a camera that has virtually the same feature set as canon's g5 and nikon's 5400 but in a more compact package. it's not perfect though. RAW format is not supported and writing a TIFF file still takes way too much time. and there are some ergonomic nits that is uncharacteristic of sony. still, this is a great package and worthy of consideration.

i hope this helps your buying decision. peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Sony.
Excellent picture quality, I am no expert, yet I can easily see the diffence between my pictures and my friends' Canon and Kodak cameras. Size is pretty decent, I carry it everywhere in my pocket ( that's if I don't mind a bulky pocket though ). The night vision makes people go aaaawwww, but is not as practical as it initially sounds. I got a 256Mb pro stick for movies, and I am pretty happy with it. I could use a stronger optical zoom, and certainly a different location for the built-in flash.

Bottomline, I love my camera. It's helping me store my memories in better quality than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony CyberShot DSC-V1: To Buy or Not To Buy.
I must begin by explaining that I got back into the digital camera market having to replace my Kodak DC240 which was purchased (and cutting edge with 2.0MP) in 2000. The DC-240 finally went dead and I took it to Best Buy who, on their warranty, gave me the purchase value towards another camera, and thus the DSC-V1. I have had the DSC-v1 for a little over a week now and have some interesting insights. I generally look to Amazon for reviews and hope that you will find this one useful. Please know that I am not a professional, and don't know a whole lot about photography (had a couple of classes in undergrad.)

To set this up, I have a friend who, upon hearing that I had this money to spend, recommended that I buy a digital SLR. Sounded great, but I wanted something that would fit into my pocket. I was looking at a Kodak with 10x zoom, but when I went to purchase it, I realized that it did not fit into my pocket. I am more prone to grabbing my camera if I can just toss it in my pocket and take it to a party, to shoot art, or take pictures of my dog! So now to my take. Please note that these are not necessarily pro's or con's but observations.

-5MP WOW! Image quality is great. Coming from a 2MP, I am blown away!

-USB2.0 is fast and a definite sales point to this camera. Make sure you have 2.0 on your computer if you are planning on shooting large images!

-The rechargeable battery is nice. I don't know if I am sold on it yet though. I am still pondering buying another battery should I be on vacation away from an outlet.

-People have complained about the controls, I have big hands and they are not a problem.

-I do have a problem holding the camera. Go hold one before you buy it. I like the camera and knew this going into it. My left hand has the tendency to hold down or cover the flash, My right index finger has the tendency to cover the viewfinder. I will learn to live with it...

- The camera has tons of features, which was one of my reasons for purchasing it. They can get a little confusing though.

-If you are looking for a simple point and shoot, or a camera for your grandmother, this is not for her/you.

-The display, although small, is adequate and clear.

-I was looking into cameras with a greater zoom. This 4x works great.

-The camera works quickly with 5MP images allowing you to quickly zoom in and out and scroll through them. The LCD displays them clearly

-Menus are clear and precise.

-The ability to control aperture, shutter speed, and focus is great. It gives me the ability to treat this camera like an SLR.

-The night framing/shot features are nice for shooting at night or indoors. They allow you to frame a scene on the LCD before shooting the image.

-The hot-shoe is a nice feature as I can connect this camera either to a professional flash OR a professional lighting kit to allow me to shoot artwork.

All in all, this is a great camera. If you are just looking for a point and shoot, this camera is not for you. It is a lot of camera packed in a small package. Be prepared to read the lengthy manual several times before getting SOME of the features down. Also beneficial is some knowledge of basic photography, as terms such as metering, ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed are used often, and to fully understand the camera, working knowledge of these terms is necessity.
