5-0 out of 5 stars Best in class and better than most that cost much more!
I need binoculars for hunting and nature watching in varied conditions including 100+ degree heat/dust, muddy bogs, snow covered mountain woodlands, and open prairies. I bought the Minolta 8x42WP Waterproof Classic Sport Binoculars after a months long search and they have not disappointed. I have used them hunting in North Texas and whale/nature watching in Maui from on land and at sea. Minolta offers the most features including larger FOV, BAK4, coated optics, waterproofing, etc. This shows when you actually put the binocs to your eyes. Other makers charge 2 to 3 times as much for these features. They are hands-down a better choice than the similar priced Nikon, Orion, Bushnell, Leupold Wind River, etc. brands. "Similar priced" is not totally accurate as most of these makers charge well over $100 for their products. The Wind Rivers are particularly disappointing considering their price. Pentax does make a similar model at a similar price but it is heavier. I had to buy these on faith as I could not find a retailer who had the Classic Sport model in Dallas, TX. By looking through a large number of very different models of binoculars, I can strongly say that these are the set to buy if you do not intend to spend over $300. I am amazed at how competitively Minolta prices this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW...
I just recieved my new binoculars and as is usual with the old Minolta tradition, you get a great product at a greater price.
I worked for this company many years ago and I remember they were sticklers for detail.
The binoculars are great if, like me, you have to wear glasses; incredible eye relief. It was very heavy overcast and once upto my eyes, someone turned on the lights. It was just that bright. The contrast was not overbearing in any way; just enough snap to remind you of a good quality pair of binoculars. With a short focus of only 18 feet and a sharpness beyond my expectations, I couldn't be any happier with my purchase. I highly recommend them to both pros and amatuers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Very bright, better than comparably priced binos from other brands. This bino is very good for watching SEC Football during day or night, and this was the primary reason I bought them. Very good eye relief allows me to use with glasses, so I can quickly cease using them if a pass play is called. Very easy to focus. For Football and other spectator sports, 8X40 with very wide angle is the perfect bino size. Weather proof is a definite plus. They are a bit bulky, but not any more so than other comparable brand full size Binos. Wish it had a padded ballistic nylon carry case, but the vinyl does just fine. JDH

4-0 out of 5 stars Bright optics + Weather proof = Good value for money
Brief:
Go for these if you think 8X is right for you.

Pros:
1) Bright, Clear optics.
2) Wide angle (8.2°) - doesn't feel like peering out of a pipe.
3) Ruggedly built and won't fog in light-rain (important in Seattle & thereabouts).
4) Not too heavy - about 1½ lb.

Cons:
1) 8X feels slightly underpowered. No good for astronomy.
2) Some chromatic aberration apparent on bright edges, but not any worse than the Nikons & Leicas I looked at

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Optics at a Fair Price
Before I purchased these binoculars I compared them to other brands at a local camera store. The Minolta's were brighter and had better field of view than several Nikon brands such as the Egret II, Action V and Monarch models. The fact that they are weather proof is also a plus. ...

1-0 out of 5 stars Minolta 8 x 40w binoculars
My binoculars arrived promptly and in perfect condition being nicely packaged. I was surprised at the fine quality of the case. The focuser and diopter were mechanically better than anything you could find in a department store. I found the
exit pupils (the round disks of light visible at arms lenght
in the eyepieces) to be squared off at the sides. If these bino's really had BAK4 prisms these should have been completly round. No baffling was found in the barrels.
The eyecups are really nice and pop down with your palm as
displayed in the instructions. Ample 18mm of eye relief allowed
me to leave my glasses on while viewing. Unfortunately reflections or "ghosting" was a problem and the edge sharpness
was mediocre at best. These problems were present with or without glasses. Funny how they went on sale right after I bought them! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
I wish Amazon[.com] had a 1-10 rating system because I would give the binos (price taken into consideration) a 9. However, I have to give it a four star rating because a five star rating is deceptive (making it appear to be perfect). The binos have slight chromatic aberration, visible on bright reflections and stars. On terrestrial objects, for my eyes at least, the binos gave a nice, comforatble 3-d effect with a nice wide angle of view. I preferred it over other binos with a higher price tag (about 130 dollars more) as I felt the images were nearly identical, but the binos gave a nice wide view. At 10x the magnification is just on the verge of being too high to handhold, so I had to lower the binos every ten minutes or so to give my arms a break. The binos aren't the lightest I have seen for its class, but on the other hand, they feel very durable.
On astronomical objects, the wide view makes it a perfect set to go crusing around Orion. The Orion nebula is very evident. When just coasting around the night sky for the first time, I looked for Orion's belt and came across the nebula, even though I didn't know it. I kept wondering why the optics had fogged up so quickly, or why the optics seemed so bad, when I realized my mistake. On some binos of nearly the same apeture, I had to really search for the nebula, now it's so obvious, I couldn't believe my eyes. With Sirius in the view, I noticed a slight blue ring around the bright star, but it was pretty faint. Only on the brightest stars did I notice false color.

Based on apeture, and price class

Optics: 9
Weight: 8
Construction: 9
Easy of handling (to keept object in view steady without tripod): 8
Value: 9.9

All that averages out to around 9 out of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginning Astronomers
Being interested in amateur astronomy, I wanted a good pair of binocs that would have enough light gathering ability (as well as clarity and focus) to enable me to gain a greater familiarity with the night sky. Although most astronomy info sources warn you to stay away from Wide Angle binoculars due to the lack of clarity near the image's edge, the Minolta's do a very good job of keeping everything easy to see. I'm able to get stunning detail of the lunar surface as well as the ability to pick out hidden stars that are more difficult to see with the naked eye.

I also use these binocs for general daytime use like bird-watching. The 10X magnification allows me to get up close and personal with the local wildlife at my bird feeder without scaring them away.

With all the marvelous things you can do with these binoculars, be warned that their size (10 X 50) is usually at the hand-holding limit for most people. They aren't heavy by any means but if you are going to use them for astronomy or long-time viewing (or anything else where you're looking at something small) you will get a little bit of shaking. As the lenses magnify the image, they also magnify your hand motions--nothing very severe or incredibly annoying and nothing that a tripod and tripod adapter can't fix. (And for those reading the tech aspects of these binocs, fear not! Contrary to information posted about them, these binocs DO have the threading hole for a tripod adapter!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Compact Binoculars for Eyeglass Wearers
If you wear glasses (and don't like to take them off to see through binoculars), and don't want to pack around a lot of weight, these are by far the best binoculars I've found for the price (I didn't try the $1000+ models!). I tried the 10 X 25's and they were good, but the 8 X 25's are the best. Very clear and nice and lightweight. ... Read more

The versatile and powerfulmagnifications, coupled with high-quality multicoated optics, make theheavy-duty Classic Sport binoculars a perfect choice for hunting, marinesports or any other outdoor activities.

It also provides a wide angle-of-view which allows more area to be viewedwithout moving the binoculars. A wide-angle-of-view is especially valuablewhen viewing moving objects.

Conventional binoculars with normal eye relief do not provide a properviewing distance for eyeglass wearers, because the focal point of the eye istoo close to the eyepiece lens. The result is an incomplete anduncomfortable "tunnel-vision" image when viewing with glasses on. MinoltaClassic Sport binoculars solve this problem by featuring a long eye relief, providing full-image viewing for eyeglass wearers.

The Classic Sport binoculars feature a multi-coated optics BaK4 prism. Themulti coating is applied to the all light-transmitting surfaces, for optimumbrightness. Additionally, the prism-reflecting surface features a uniquePhase Coating and Special Mirror Coating to ensure precise, sharp imageswithout loss of light.
